Shores & Falls
Iceland may be known for its glaciers and volcanoes, but it's also the world's youngest country (geographically) and home of the world's longest-running Parliament (though admittedly it has gone through a few changes). Virginia Mueller sets out to circle the island nation, hunting auroras on the south shore and marveling at waterfalls on the north. She learns how to photograph auroras, walks in the footsteps of NASA, and samples whale meat while learning about Iceland's culture and history. At the same time, Mueller deals with a collision of heteronormative norms and her asexual identity.Shores & Falls puts you directly on the tour bus and in Mueller's mind - learning everything there is about Iceland while delving into the bonds of womanhood: sisters, parents, and partners. Part travelogue, part guidebook - complete with restaurant, activity, and lodging guides - you step right off the plane with Mueller.
Cappuccino Per Favore
In 2008, at the height of the U.S. housing crisis, and just when novice real estate investor Mary Lehman thought things couldn't get any worse... they didn't! Instead, she parlayed her financial woes and failed investments into a fascinating adventure, fulfilling her lifelong dream to travel. No stranger to difficult times, Mary grew up working long hours on her family's backbreaking mid-western fruit farm while steering clear of her irascible father, only to end up a pregnant teenage army bride with an abusive husband. Single again and with a young son, Mary returned to college believing it would make a difference. Yet, her journey to better her life continued at a slow pace until she ultimately landed a dream job in the Florida Key's hot real estate industry. There she experienced a level of success beyond anything she had ever imagined, only to watch everything she had worked so hard to build vanish practically overnight. Fighting back against the depression that threatened to consume her, she cashed out what little she had left in savings and set out on a three-month trip to Europe.Cappuccino Per Favore tells the story of that uplifting, life-affirming journey. Part memoir, part travelogue, part celebration, it is, first and foremost, a love story. Not for another person but for a magical place, northern Italy's incomparable Treasure Mountain with its breathtaking vistas, challenging hiking trails, great food, and generous and hospitable people.

A Pilgrim's Guide to the Camino Ingl矇s
Camino Ingl矇s: This ancient route was popular with pilgrims arriving by sea from England, Ireland and Northern Europe in the medieval period. It all but faded from memory but is quietly coming back to life and now ready to welcome pilgrims seeking a more solitary way along the rugged r穩as of Northern Galicia. It was previously combined with the route to Finisterre which was described as the road less travelled but that acclaim has now passed to the English way (or Celtic way) that starts in Ferrol or A Coru簽a and now fully merits its own edition. Few pilgrims walking the Camino Ingl矇s commence in A Coru簽a which, at less than 100 km, does not entitle the pilgrim to a compostela unless they have walked an extra 25 km in their own country or combine it with the route from Ferrol. This provides an opportunity to visit the only site in Galicia directly linked with the life of Jesus - his first miracle in Cana of Galilee. By combining two distinct starting points we also come to understand the variety of pathways that the caminos de Santiago offer us, inviting further exploration. This guidebook also seeks to find a balance between the outer and inner journey, between the practical and spiritual, which is why it is subtitled A Practical & Mystical Manual - that we might find a place to eat and sleep at the end of a hard day's walk but also, and crucially, that we might find the courage to dive into the mystery of our own soul awakening.
Gather the Olives
"'Gather the Olives' is an achingly lovely essay collection that celebrates the multiculturalism of Israel and Palestine, lifting up those whose generosity and kindness lights the way to lasting peace." --FOREWORD REVIEWSGather the Olives is a dangerous book. That's because it is about peace in a time when peace in the Holy Land is a faraway, even radical notion. It is about hope and food and community and the way there can be solidarity in sharing a meal. Hence the danger: this book might remind its brave readers of how peace is nourished and how hope can't be extinguished.Over the years, Bret Lott-the bestselling author of more than a dozen books, including the novel Jewel (an Oprah's Book Club selection)-has lived and taught in Jerusalem, affording him the opportunity to travel throughout Israel and the surrounding area. Now, in Gather the Olives, this gifted storyteller has brought together a collection of intimate portraits of the people, the food, and the hope for peace to be found in a region ravaged by war and conflict.Through meditations on such varied matters as an olive oil cooperative run by Israeli and Palestinian women, a non-kosher butcher shop in the middle of upscale-and very kosher-German Colony, the nighttime harvesting of olives by Bedouins in downtown Jerusalem, a traditional Shabbat dinner at an ancient home within the walls of the Old City, a simple yet beautiful plate of fruit in an office in Ramallah, Bret Lott considers how food and the people with whom we share it can bring together hearts and souls in a lasting, meaningful, and peaceful way.

"The first principle is that you must not fool yourself - and you are the easiest person to fool." Richard Feynman, Nobel Prize winning physicist The moment I felt my real feelings, back in a Native American healing in 2016, I discovered what a great liar I was. Lonely, depressed, desperate... the lowest of the low... No matter how my life looked to anyone else the only thing that mattered was being real with myself. But I was still lying, so poetically, so romantically, tricking myself, that my lies grew even more dangerous. Luckily life protected me from myself, from acting on what I thought was real. Instead I got on a plane to Spain and started hiking, each step bringing me closer to the truth, which I would finally understand on the other side of the world. Also available as a full colour paperback.
A Load of Bull - An Englishman's Adventures in Madrid
Re-issued with a new introduction and extra chapters, A Load of Bull is the hilarious true story of an Englishman sent to Madrid to help launch Spanish Vogue. In the late eighties Tim Parfitt blagged his way into a job at Cond矇 Nast in London and from there into a six week stint in Madrid to help launch Spanish Vogue. Six weeks turned into nine years, and helping out turned into running the company. Along the way, Tim Parfitt discovered the real 'real' Spain. He never saw a Costa and he certainly never bought an olive grove. Instead, he discovered a booming city in hedonistic reaction to years of fascism, where sleep was something you only did at work and where five hour lunches invariably involved a course of bull's testicles.Tim Parfitt's rise from unwanted guest to paparazzi-pursued mover in Spain's glamorous social scene is a hilarious comedy of errors. Frothing with a language designed to make foreigners dribble, hospitalised by tapa-induced flatulence and constantly frustrated by the unapproachable beauty of the women parading through the Vogue offices, he nevertheless falls in love with a city, a country and its people - despite the fact he hasn't a clue what they're on about.'A hugely entertaining memoir ... frequently laugh-out-loud funny' (The Daily Express)'Parfitt is no ordinary Englishman. His light touch and neat line in self-deprecating humour perfectly suits this entertaining urban spin on the old tale of Brits having fun under the Spanish sun' (The Sunday Times)'A love letter to Madrid ... brilliantly captures a truly eccentric and hedonistic place' (The Daily Mirror)'Often hilarious ... a side-splittingly funny travel memoir' (BBC Online)'Magnificent ... brilliant and moving, hilarious and truthful' (La Vanguardia)'Don't miss it ... Madrid through the eyes of an Englishman.' (Vogue Espa簽a)
Repacking for Greece

Being There
In this tome, Jean and John Dillon open their old travel diaries to take us fondly back to the days of pre-millennium travel, when getting there was achieved with the use of maps and signposts, as opposed to pings and notifications, and being there was recorded in a journal. Whether for leisure or scholarly pursuit, Jean and John bring us to North America, Mexico, Europe, Hawaii, Israel - and most fondly of all, perhaps - to Greece. The diaries are frank, witty, and always entertaining. They represent the first sortie into travel writing for the authors.

You Never Walk Alone
Today, numerous individuals find themselves adrift, seeking meaning in a world where various ideologies have faltered: Communism, Capitalism, Nationalism, Materialism. Amidst this ideological void, one ponders: What is the essence of life? Who or what can genuinely satisfy human yearnings? Each year, hundreds of thousands embark on the Camino, or segments of it, in a quest for purpose. In 2018, I joined this pursuit, starting my journey on the Camino Frances from St. Jean Pied de Port in France and concluding in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. This 800 km trek, spanning forty days, was a solo venture, but as this book reveals, I was never truly alone. Along the way, I encountered numerous individuals, sharing not only the physical path but also profound connections. I wholeheartedly recommend this pilgrimage - far more than a mere walk - to anyone earnestly seeking meaning in life.
From Ballinrobe to Wexford
For a racing enthusiast, what could be more fun than travelling around the beautiful Emerald Isle visiting all of the racecourses and interacting with the amazingly friendly Irish people! The book though is of interest not just to mad racing folk but to anyone interested in travel and particularly visiting the stunning Irish countryside and enjoying a much quieter pace of life than on the British side of the Irish Sea. There is a chapter for each racecourse giving information about its history and geographical location. Some racecourses are not easy to find despite their size and there are suggestions as to the best way to get there and even on more mundane issues such as parking. The best features of each course are highlighted along with the occasional disappointing aspect. Details of race meetings attended at each are described in some detail and the overall experience is evaluated. Travelling around Ireland is a big part of the book with the amusing events that occur. Various attractions/places of interest near racecourses are mentioned so the trip to Ireland has quite a bit more to offer than just racing. The friendliness of the Irish people is a recurring theme along with the lovely welcome they always give you at pubs, restaurants, hotels and coffee shops. In summary, the book confirms that racing in Ireland is great fun or as the Irish say good craic and it seems many racing aficionados this side of the Irish Sea are totally oblivious of this and need to go to Ireland to find out just what they are missing.
Moving Islands
'Moving Islands' is John's seventh memoir book, and it continues very much in the same vein as the previous six, in that it's highly amusing, even laugh-out-loud in places, yet also informative and educational, giving a unique insight into what it's like not only to move to Greece from the UK, but also how one goes about moving from one island to another, a watershed in their lives that neither the author nor his wife had foreseen coming. If you've ever wondered what might be involved in upping sticks and moving house to a different Greek island, always assuming that, like the author, you'd made the life-changing decision to move countries many years earlier, then read this book and you'll either vow never to do it yourself, or to keep this work close-by as a guide for getting through the whole complicated and sometimes hugely frustrating experience.

Wanderings Wide
This book is a biography of my father, Albert Solberg (1903-1996). He was born in Norway, joined the Norwegian merchant marine at eighteen, and came to the United States in 1924. He endured personal tragedy and a half-dozen brushes with death, but also had some amazing experiences in places like India, Samoa, and South America. Later, he worked as a yacht crewman on the Great Lakes. After settling in New York City, he married in 1933. He and his wife of 63 years raised six children, and he lived to the age of 92. This is a story about adventure, hard work, and family--how an immigrant carved out a piece of the American Dream. All readers have known someone like Albert, who came to America with nothing and created a good life in a new land.

Tourism in European Cities
Tourism in European Cities explores the relationship between tourist activity and the architecture and built environment within which it takes place. This is the first book to consider urban tourism with a particular focus on European cities. Tourism in European Cities considers the tourist experience and the various elements that shape it. In many cities, the historic core plays a crucial role in tourism either as the location of the more important attractions, or as an attraction in its own right. The book dedicates a chapter to urban heritage and its relationship to tourism, including urban conservation and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Another chapter considers contemporary architecture and debates some cities' efforts to use iconic architecture, in particular, to enhance their attractiveness in the context of increased competition between cities. In the context of competition, many cities are resorting to events as a strategy to reposition and differentiate themselves from other cities. Major events are accompanied by major investment in event venues and in urban infrastructure. The city often serves as a backdrop to the urban festival as activities and performances are staged in the city's urban spaces. This book is essential reading for students of tourism and urban geography. It is also of interest to students of urban planning and architecture, and anyone keen to learn more about tourism and European cities.
