The In-Between Language
In Adeline's home, words dance between English and Korean, filling each day with love, laughter, and the music of family. Every morning, her Halmoni, her grandmother, waits by the door with a cheerful "Hakgyoe gani?" meaning "Are you going to school?" Adeline answers softly, "Ne, Halmoni!" Then Halmoni waves her off with a smile that says everything words cannot. When the school day ends, Halmoni is always there, standing at the door to greet her granddaughter with open arms. She peels apples into curling ribbons, saves Korean pears for special days, and rolls gimbap filled with avocado and rice. Between laughter and small messes, Halmoni calls Adeline "Yeppeo!," her word for pretty, and together they share the quiet, unspoken language that only family can understand.Sometimes Halmoni mixes her English and Korean together, making Adeline giggle. Sometimes Adeline forgets a Korean word, and Halmoni smiles, filling in the missing piece. Their words may not always match perfectly, but their hearts do. It is in the sound of "Aigoo!" when the cat jumps on the table, the soft "Annyeong!" as they wave goodbye, and the warmth of the Choco Pie Halmoni saves for later.Through gentle rhyme and tender watercolor scenes, The In-Between Language celebrates the beauty of growing up between cultures and generations. Adeline learns that her family's language, part English, part Korean, and entirely love, is more than words. It is a bridge that connects the past and the present, the old and the new, and the people who mean the most. This lyrical picture book by Amy Bae captures the heart of bilingual and multicultural families.
