ARE YOU STRUGGLING TO LEARN CHINESE? Perhaps you've skipped a step, start learning from the most fundamentals--basic strokes, stroke combinations. UNSPOKEN RULES OF CHINESE CHARACTERS Gain Insight into the Intricacies of Chinese Characters * Why does a character look distorted when it appears inside another character? * Why characters that look 'identical' to me are actually different? * Does it really matter if a stroke is written slightly longer or shorter? * How do I align and combine the strokes so that they look good? UNCONVENTIONAL WAY TO LEARN CHINESE CHARACTERS *Apply Geometry to Analyse Chinese Characters *Learn through Fun and Interactive Puzzles VISUAL LEARNING *Learn Quickly through Graphics *What-You-See-Is-What-You-Name: 35 strokes at your finger's tip DESIGNED FOR ANYONE--WITH OR WITHOUT ANY KNOWLEDGE OF CHINESE *If you like to doodle, colour, do paper-cutting, solve puzzles... you'll love this book. ________________________________________ WHAT IS NOVEL IN THIS BOOK 1. APPLYING GEOMETRY TO CHINESE This book boldly applied concepts used in an unrelated field-- geometry to introduce new terminologies to describe features of characters. Similar to constructing a building, Chinese characters are created with balance, symmetry and coordination between different components in mind. A stroke is tilted at a particular angle, fitted into a precise position and adjusted to different lengths with the aim to create a masterpiece. Geometrical jargons are perfect descriptors of these unnamed features. 2. WHAT-YOU-SEE-IS-WHAT-YOU-NAME: 35 BASIC STROKES This book fills the missing gap that other books hardly paid attention to. It focuses on the most basic component--strokes. Skipping this fundamental learning is like learning English vocabularies without learning how to write the alphabets. In this book, the 35 strokes are given names that describe their appearances ... what you see is what you name! 3. VISUAL LEARNING Usually Chinese characters are shown in black and have stick-like appearance. It is very difficult to look for differences in this kind of presentation. In this book, a lot of effort is spent on showcasing Chinese characters in a different light. This improved presentation makes differences and compositions of characters easily visible. To help you learn systematically and know where to focus on, the visual activities zoom in on specific features of Chinese characters one at a time. 4. CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING Instead of receiving the knowledge passively, you will need to actively search for multiple ways to solve some of the activities and will be prompted with questions to help you reflect on what you have learnt. Introduction to Classical Tibetan
Classical Tibetan, with origins dating to the ninth century, is the script found in a huge corpus of surviving Tibetan texts, mostly of Buddhist content; native Tibetans still employ this language, to this day when writing on religious, medical or historical subjects. The aim of this book is to provide a rapid introduction to the main elements of Classical Tibetan, so that students may begin to access for themselves the vast amount of written material available in this language. While designed for guided study, the material will also be of use to those who tackle the language on their own. Regular study over approximately six months should result in an understanding of most grammatical features and allow the student to read the simpler prose texts.

Strategic Reading Skills for University Students of Arabic as a Foreign Language
Given that instructional practices in many Arabic language classes reflect a primary focus on grammar, strategic instruction is deemed to be quite challenging for most instructors. Additionally, many learners of Arabic as a Foreign Language (AFL) lack the necessary skills and strategies to comprehend Arabic texts. It is important, thus, for AFL learners to know how to read skillfully and to be able to deal with an Arabic text independently. Therefore, this book explores the Malaysian AFL learners' major problems in reading Arabic texts and determine the appropriate set of design principles for effective strategic reading. The problems of AFL learners in reading were examined from a teaching perspective. A Design and Development Research (DDR) approach was adopted to frame the design and development of strategic reading for AFL learners.

Chinese Stories for Language Learners
The highly anticipated next book in Tuttle's Stories for Language Learners series is here! This book presents 22 classic Chinese proverbs and the traditional tales behind them. The stories are bilingual, with the Chinese and English versions presented on facing pages. Each includes an explanation of how the proverb is used today, cultural notes, vocabulary and discussion questions. Audio recordings of the tales read by native speakers are included--giving students a chance to improve their pronunciation and comprehension. Some of the proverbs featured in this collection include: "Painting the Eyes on the Dragon"Based on the story of a famous court painter in 6th century China who painted dragons, this proverb refers to the finishing touches needed to bring a work of art or literature to life. In a discussion, it refers to the final statements used to clinch the argument."Waiting for Rabbits by a Tree Stump"Based on an ancient folktale about a foolish farmer who sees a rabbit kill itself in front of him by running into a tree stump, then gives up tilling his field to wait for more rabbits by the stump. This saying is applied to people who wait passively for luck to strike again. It also refers to impractical people who stick to one way of doing things only because it has worked for them once in the past."Pure Water Has No Fish; Perfect People Have No Friends"Many versions of this historical tale exist. The one told here is about a 2nd century AD official sent to govern a far-flung outpost on the Silk Road who is fastidious in applying strict rules and thereby causes the local people to rebel against him. In the professional world, it is used to refer to people who do not like to work with an overly strict supervisor or colleague.Whether being used in a classroom or for self-study, Chinese Stories for Language Learners provides an educational and entertaining way for intermediate Mandarin learners to expand their vocabulary and understanding of the language.
Beth Qaṭraye
Beth Qaṭraye, Syriac for "region of the Qataris," is a term found in Syriac literature referring to the region of north-eastern Arabia, including modern-day Qatar and Bahrain, from the fourth to the ninth centuries. Beth Qaṭraye was an important cultural, linguistic and religious crossroads in the pre-Islamic and early Islamic period, when it produced a number of important East-Syriac authors. Scholarship has so far only focused on these Syriac authors and their writings rather than other aspects of Beth Qaṭraye. This volume presents and analyzes information on the pre-Islamic and early Islamic historical geography and toponyms of the Beth Qaṭraye region as well as newly discovered vocabulary from a language referred to as Qaṭrāyīth ("in Qatari") used by its inhabitants. Based on analysis of this new data, Mario Kozah argues that Qaṭrāyīth is in fact a local Arabic dialect transliterated using Syriac letters. Thus, Qaṭrāyīth consists mostly of Arabic vocabulary (as well as a few Syriac and Pahlavi loanwords), and maintains mainly Arabic with some Syriac grammatical structures and lexical influence. As such, it constitutes the oldest documented Arabic vernacular from the seventh-century Arabian Peninsula, revealing a language in rapid transformation. The volume also includes a special chapter on the islands of the Gulf region according to Muslim sources by Saif Al-Murikhi and a unique reconstruction of the lexicon of Ḥenanishoʿ bar Seroshway (ca. 900) by George Kiraz.

Learn to Read in Japanese, Volume III
This book is based on our belief that the most enjoyable and efficient way to learn to read in Japanese is to dive in and start reading almost immediately, learning new kanji with the help of memory aides as you go. In order to make this approach workable, we introduce new kanji at the beginning of each chapter and then ask you to take a quick pre-test on their pronunciations before you start to read. The practice reading material in each chapter includes only kanji characters that you know or are in the process of learning, and we provide immediate feedback about your reading accuracy in the form of same-page romaji equivalents and translations. The book is designed for students who are at least somewhat familiar with the 1208 kanji that were introduced in Learn to Read in Japanese, Volumes I and II. Like the first two books, this volume includes at least three practice sentences for each new kanji. We introduce 8 new kanji in each chapter of the book, and we group the new kanji in the Kanji Catalogue by chapter, so that it is convenient to study them in groups of eight before starting a new lesson. In addition to providing sentence reading practice, we include more than 2,000 Japanese words and phrases for vocabulary reading practice. We introduce a total of 320 new kanji in this book. In addition, the Kanji Catalogue at the back of the book describes all of the kanji that were introduced in the first two books, for a total of 1528. This book is designed to teach new kanji in five steps: Step One. Kanji Catalogue. Before you start a chapter, turn to the Kanji Catalogue and take some time to review the eight new kanji that are listed in the New Kanji table at the beginning of the chapter. Your aim should be to acquire the ability to recognize each kanji and associate it with its pronunciations. Step Two. Pronunciation Pre-Test. Next turn to the chapter that you are about to start reading and take the "Pronunciation Pre-Test." To do this, look at the New Kanji table and try to voice each of the pronunciations for all eight of the kanji in the table. Use the table at the bottom of the page to check your accuracy. Repeat this test several times until you feel ready to start reading.Step Three. Vocabulary List. Next start reading the Vocabulary List, being careful to cover the "answers" on the right side of the page with a piece of paper or your thumb. You will have a chance to practice reading each new kanji multiple times in different words. You will also see more than 2,000 mnemonics for the words that appear in the Vocabulary Lists.Step Four. Practice Sentences. Next read the Practice Sentences that are provided in each chapter. Again, be sure to cover the text on the right side of the page as you read, but don't hesitate to uncover it if you aren't sure about kanji pronunciations or when you don't know how to translate the Japanese text.Step Five. Supplemental Reading. We have identified some fascinating Japanese language articles online that use only the kanji that you have learned up to this point. These articles are available from "News in Slow Japanese." We sincerely hope that this book will help you as you learn to read in Japanese.

ABC Cantonese-English Comprehensive Dictionary
Cantonese is spoken by an estimated 73 million people worldwide. It remains hugely influential and a source of great pride--especially for its speakers in Hong Kong, where it flourishes as the predominant language and so sets Hong Kong apart linguistically from all of mainland China. The first and most authoritative reference of its kind to be published in the last forty years, ABC Cantonese-English Comprehensive Dictionary comprises about 15,000 lexical entries that are unique to the colloquial Cantonese language as it is spoken and written in Hong Kong today. Author Robert S. Bauer, a renowned lexicographer and authority on Cantonese, has utilized language documentation resources to the fullest extent by gathering material firsthand from dictionaries, glossaries, and grammars; newspapers and magazines; government records; cartoons and comic books; film and television; websites; and native speakers striding the sidewalks of Hong Kong to capture concretely contemporary Cantonese. In addition to the Introduction, which presents an exhaustive description and analysis of Hong Kong Cantonese, this dictionary's special features include: alphabetical ordering of the lexical entries by their Jyut Ping romanized Cantonese pronunciations; parts of speech; cross-referencing with semantically related lexical items; variant pronunciations and written forms in Chinese characters and English letters; explanatory notes on social status and usage (literal, figurative, slang, jargon, humorous, obscene, obsolete, etc.); information on sociocultural, historical, and political aspects; and example sentences showing lexical usage in the context of spoken Cantonese.
