Intermediate Arabic Reader
The timeless love story of Romeo and Juliet has been brought to life for the first time as a novelized adaptation for learners of Modern Standard Arabic. This story was chosen as it is well known to Western audiences; being familiar with the characters and plot of a story will help you focus less on what the story is about and more on the language. The story has been divided into eight chapters of similar, manageable length for learners. Each chapter features: 1) the text with diacritics (tashkeel); 2) English translations; 3) Vocabulary listsWhen the name of a character or place makes its first appearance in the book, it is shown in bold.Words and phrases that appear in the vocabulary section (glossary) are underlined in the text with a subtle dotted line. They are organized by order of appearance and grouped by the page number on which they appear.A noun or adjective will be listed in its singular form, and if its plural is irregular, this will be shown in parentheses.A verb will be shown in its base form followed by a reference code in small square brackets. This corresponds to a table showing the verb's complete conjugation patterns in Lingualism's book Modern Standard Arabic Verbs. The masdar (gerund) of unaugmented (measure I) verbs is given in parentheses. The masdar for augmented verbs is also normally given when they appear in the book. Many nouns (including masdars) and adjectives (including active and passive participles) act as adverbs in the indefinite accusative case or in conjunction with a preposition. These are often glossed as the basic form of the word, so you can see each word's original meaning and how it can be used as an adverb in context.

Situational Egyptian Arabic 1
Kalaam Kull Yoom 1: Situational Egyptian Arabic is designed to help elementary and intermediate learners succeed at critical moments during everyday communicative tasks. This is the first of two books in a series. The 16 chapters focus on everyday situations such as transportation, eating out, socializing, health. (See the Table of Contents for the full list of chapters.)Each chapter includes several mini-dialogues and an extended dialogue in authentic, everyday Egyptian Arabic.Arabic script with phonemic transcription and English translations.Hundreds of language and culture notes.Lists of key vocabulary and expressions.Access to the accompanying audio. This is the book I wish I had when I first went to live in Egypt. I had a pretty good grasp on colloquial Arabic grammar. I could conjugate verbs and form basic sentences. I knew "lots of words"... or so I thought. But I would so often find myself in situations unable to express my thoughts and needs and struggling to understand what people were saying to me. I was always worried that my awkward exchanges with locals made me come across as rude because I didn't know the right things to say at the right times. Understandably, I wanted to prepare before I tried to tackle specific communicative challenges-such as getting my hair cut. But how? I found myself flipping through various course books and pocket dictionaries looking for words and phrases to use with the barber. I would bring lists to my teacher. How do you say "not too short"? What's the word for "sideburns"? How do I make small talk with my barber? (I knew that Egyptian barbers were chatty!) It was a lot of research to accomplish a simple task I'd taken for granted back home. This is not a coursebook with chapters that build on each other and need to be studied in order. Use the Table of Contents at the front of the book (also located on the back cover of the paperback edition, for your convenience) to find the topic that interests you for your immediate or future communicative goals. Of course, you're not going to go out into the real world and have conversations with people that follow the dialogues line by line. The purpose of the dialogues is to teach you different words and phrases that you can use and that you may hear. Synonyms, alternative expressions, and supplementary vocabulary are provided to help you form your own sentences to express yourself and to be prepared for the variety of possible things you may hear Egyptians say to you. By studying the dialogues, learning new vocabulary and key expressions, and listening to the accompanying audio, you will soon find yourself able to express yourself with confidence and understand people in Egypt with fewer misunderstandings.

A Breeze from the East
This novel collection from Wael Almahdi is English poetry at some of its finest. It is global, transcending both time and style-as Flamur Vehapi states in his foreword, "a true gem in the world of poetry." Readers may find themselves at turns intrigued, inspired, deeply contemplative, and smiling.Almahdi's work culminates in the creation of Mashriqi English, a poetic register that merges the expressive depth of contemporary English with the multifaceted, centuries-old Perso-Arabic poetic tradition."By seamlessly blending Arabic, Persian, and Urdu in English verse, Wael Almahdi has proven himself an accomplished bard and an innovator, pushing the boundaries of English poetry, and challenging notions of English as an "un-Islamic" language. Mashriqi is new but grounded in a centuries-old tradition of Muslims incorporating Perso-Arabic vocabulary into their native languages. This novel endeavor deserves our attention." -Muhammad Ali Mojaradi, author of The Flame of Love: Rumi's 100 Most Passionate Poems"With open arms, Almahdi welcomes us to the future of poetry: multilingual and marrying global styles and tropes that some would consider incompatible (true lovers, however, have always known otherwise). As if simply lowering the net on a tennis court, Almahdi's compositions gleefully hop over the borders of past and present, east and west, the daily and eternal. This is a masterpiece." -Crescent Reviews"Wael Almahdi's debut poetry collection introduces a confident and eloquent voice to the contemporary literary scene. His poems delve into themes that resonate with millions yet have often been overlooked in English-language publications. A gifted linguist, Wael masterfully blends multilingual elements into his verses, creating a rich and layered poetic experience. His Mashriqi poetry, rooted in a deep understanding of various Islamic and Eastern languages and cultures, is a much-needed addition to today's poetic landscape. This collection not only showcases his talent but also broadens the scope of representation in modern poetry." -Hammad Rind, author of Four Dervishes"A Breeze from the East is a remarkable collection of poems that captures the essence of human experience with depth and grace... Whether you are a seasoned lover of poetry or new to the genre, this collection is a journey worth taking-one that lingers long after the final page." -Laureta Rexha, author of When My Absence Becomes a Moon

Adventure of Great Dimension
Babylonian & Assyrian early civilizations left a vast corpus of records & scribes preserved through the medium of cuneiform writing on clay tablets. Reiner looks back on the last half-century & more of work on the Chicago Assyrian Dictionary (CAD) project at the Oriental Inst. of Chicago, focusing on the reformulation of the task that took place during her years of participation in the 1950s & 1960s. This included intellectual clashes between scholars Thorkild Jacobsen & Leo Oppenheim. Benno Landsberger supported Oppenheim & helped to move the project forward. Oriental Inst. dir. Robert McC. Adams concurs in the course that has made the CAD one of the great humanistic achievements of our time.

The Linguistic Landscape in Israel Through Palestinian Eyes
This book uses a sociolinguistic framework to explore how language serves as a marker of national identity in conflict zones, focusing on the dystopian representation of Arabic as a minority language in Israel through the perspectives of Israeli Palestinian students. Using a documentary photography research tool, PhotoVoice, minoritized college students from Northern Israel were invited to document and reflect on the signage in their area. Content analysis of students' reflections revealed not only a problematic linguistic reality in which the presence of Arabic was limited and inaccurate, but also their experience of the space as local inhabitants. The book chapters shed light on their profound perceptions and aspirations as passers-by toward the (mis)representation of their native language in the country. The contribution of the book lies in demonstrating the potential of the innovative tool PhotoVoice in developing awareness of the explicit and implicit messages delivered through linguistic landscapes. It encourages action for achieving utopian, more inclusive linguistic realities where minority languages are appropriately represented.

The Evolution of the Derivational Verbal System in Arabic
The evolution of the derivational verbal system in Arabic by Vera Tsukanova explores the development of derived verb stems in Arabic over different periods, from pre-Islamic North Arabic to modern dialects. This comprehensive work combines diachronic and comparative methods, contributing to both linguistic history and dialectology of Arabic. Tsukanova defines the typological parameters necessary to describe Arabic verbal derivation and, based on these, systematically examines the morphology, semantics, and productivity of verb stems, analyzing inherited and innovative forms, as well as the impact of language and dialectal contact. The two main chapters address the historical development of verb stems in pre-classical to classical and Modern Standard Arabic and their evolution in contemporary Arabic dialects respectively. The four dialect groups, Levantine, Egyptian-Sudanese, Tunisian and Hassaniya, are selected for the in-depth semantic analysis, whereas other dialects are briefly described, focussing on their formal features. The main findings of the book are summarized in numerous tables and diagrams. Tsukanova uses statistical analysis of verb stems across various dictionaries in order to draw conclusions about changes in productivity. The work is recommended for specialists in Semitic linguistics, Arabic dialectology and linguistic typology and can be used in university courses on the theoretical and historical grammar of Arabic.
