Speech Sounds and Features
This is a representative collection of the work of one of the world'sleading scholars in the area of speech acoustics. It follows the development overthe past 15 years of research presented in the author's previous publications onspeech analysis, feature theory, and applications to language descriptions. Most ofthe articles have had very restricted distribution -- many appearing only in theQuarterly Progress Reports issued by Dr. Fant's laboratory. The first part of thebook covers manifold aspects of speech analysis such as instrumental techniques, spectrum data, formant statistics with an emphasis on Swedish vowels and stops, speaker dependencies, normalization procedures, production theory, andcoarticulation. The second part analyzes established feature systems and suggestsrevisions and general discussions on the concept of distinctive features, perception, and the applicability of feature theory to automatic speech recognition.Articles in this part of the book are especially valuable because they represent Dr.Fant's work on "inherent" features and their phonetic correlates as it has evolvedsince his collaboration in 1952 with Roman Jakobson and Morris Halle.Speech Soundsand Features is the fourth volume in the series Current Studies inLinguistics.
Punctuation
Grammar consists of many things, and one of the more important is punctuation. It is like the Rosetta Stone, providing the key to how writers want a reader to interpret what they wrote. Punctuation is even present when we speak. A slight pause is similar to a comma, a longer pause akin to a semicolon, and a stop equals a period. Question marks and exclamation points can be heard in the cadence of a person's speech pattern and where the emphasis is placed and on which words.Almost all punctuation marks are represented in everyday speech and therein lies the key to great dialogue-knowing how to use punctuation correctly with dialogue. There are some writers who are masters at it. Elmore Leonard was one of the best. Read his books, or listen to a few of the movies made from his books, and you'll see a genius's work. This book explains how to use punctuation in an easy-to-grasp manner.

Tono-Types and Tone Evolution
This book is a comprehensive study on the phonetic characteristics of citation tones in Chaoshan Chinese. It presents the tonal patterns of 65 localities in the Chaoshan area under the "multiple-register and four-level" tonal model. Three case studies are conducted to delve into the evolutionary paths of Chaoshan tones. This book not only provides a large-scale typological study on Chaoshan Chinese, but also offers a good example of how to figure out the evolutionary paths of tones from the perspective of variation. The natural alliance of phonetics, historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, and dialect geography is reinforced. It is also suggested in this book that the joint use of these four disciplines is very promising for the study of Chinese.

Assessing English Learners in U.S. Schools
Why assess? And what will I do with the results? This book examines classroom assessment (not standardized assessment) through the lenses of three ESL teachers from across the United States. The teachers face a number of challenges particular to their individual situations, and other challenges common to all U.S. public school teachers. Most important, this book views teachers as the people best able to make their students successful. The decisions they make about assessments in the areas of literacy, oral language, and content-specific language development result in actionable information. Short reflections, jargon sidebars, and chapter activities make this an enjoyable, user-friendly resource for teachers in any classroom.

The Common Core State Standards in Mathematics for English Language Learners: Grades K-8
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) have been adopted by most states in the United States, and mathematics educators must attend to this widespread adoption and implementation. This collection of pedagogical practices supports English language learners with the content and language demands of the CCSS for Mathematics. Each chapter highlights, via detailed classroom-based vignettes, specific pedagogical practices that teachers can use to support English language learners with the Standards for Mathematical Practices, and each concludes with questions for reflection and suggestions for action plans.
Perspectives on Teaching English at the U.S.-Mexico Border
The U.S.-Mexico border crossing has become an area of study in its own right. However, very few current books focus on language and linguistic factors. Perspectives on Teaching English at the U.S.-Mexico Border adds knowledge, understanding, and insight not only to the field of TESOL, but to other fields as well. Dr. Urzua notes: "Much can be learned from exploring English language teaching at institutions of higher education located in the borderlands, especially in terms of understanding the effects of national and regional educational policies on both sides of the border, the impact of such policies on English language learners, and how issues associated with transnationalism may affect English language teaching."

As Brazil continues to play an important role as a world leader, English learners and LTOs will continue to be influential. This book examines how LTOs are affecting Brazil's ELT industry and international economy.
Beyond Repeat After Me
This engaging text clearly presents essential concepts that teachers need to guide their students toward clearly intelligible pronunciation and more effective communication skills. With a focus on ways to best tailor instruction to captitalize upon the strengths each English language learner brings to the classroom, The Common Core State Standards in Mathematics for English Language Learners, High School, explores some of the ways high school mathematics content can be made accessible to learners by building from their strengths and scaffolding their opportunities to learn more. The chapters included in this text describe specific lessons and instructional moves teachers may make that will not only support their students in learning the mathematical content, but also the associated English structures that accompany the content. Teaching English to Young Learners
As the number of young learners acquiring English worldwide continues to grow, the increasing number of teachers educating these students faces a daunting task. This easy-to-follow guide shows how learning academic language can be achieved by developing a set of skills that can be honed with practice, effective instruction, and motivation.

Topics covered include academic language development challenges and approaches, interdisciplinary teacher collaboration, and a two-way approach to CBI where content teachers and English language teachers work together and collaboratively develop complementary content-driven and language-driven CBI objectives. Content-Based Instruction is a valuable addition to the literature in our profession.
Materials Development
Teachers often find that materials get between learners and learning for a variety of reasons. Because learning materials play a significant part in lessons, it is important they fit their purpose. Mann and Copland have elicited and included comments and suggestions from teachers, teacher educators, and coursebook experts to illustrate their discussions and to bring the practitioner voice into play. They provide principles and approaches for adapting material to suit a variety of contexts and show how teachers can work successfully with limited resources. The authors are also concerned with the choices teachers and learners have with regard to the timing and location of learning, and include a discussion of homework, virtual learning environments, and the flipped classroom.
