Speech Sounds and Features
This is a representative collection of the work of one of the world'sleading scholars in the area of speech acoustics. It follows the development overthe past 15 years of research presented in the author's previous publications onspeech analysis, feature theory, and applications to language descriptions. Most ofthe articles have had very restricted distribution -- many appearing only in theQuarterly Progress Reports issued by Dr. Fant's laboratory. The first part of thebook covers manifold aspects of speech analysis such as instrumental techniques, spectrum data, formant statistics with an emphasis on Swedish vowels and stops, speaker dependencies, normalization procedures, production theory, andcoarticulation. The second part analyzes established feature systems and suggestsrevisions and general discussions on the concept of distinctive features, perception, and the applicability of feature theory to automatic speech recognition.Articles in this part of the book are especially valuable because they represent Dr.Fant's work on "inherent" features and their phonetic correlates as it has evolvedsince his collaboration in 1952 with Roman Jakobson and Morris Halle.Speech Soundsand Features is the fourth volume in the series Current Studies inLinguistics.

Punctuation
Grammar consists of many things, and one of the more important is punctuation. It is like the Rosetta Stone, providing the key to how writers want a reader to interpret what they wrote. Punctuation is even present when we speak. A slight pause is similar to a comma, a longer pause akin to a semicolon, and a stop equals a period. Question marks and exclamation points can be heard in the cadence of a person's speech pattern and where the emphasis is placed and on which words.Almost all punctuation marks are represented in everyday speech and therein lies the key to great dialogue-knowing how to use punctuation correctly with dialogue. There are some writers who are masters at it. Elmore Leonard was one of the best. Read his books, or listen to a few of the movies made from his books, and you'll see a genius's work. This book explains how to use punctuation in an easy-to-grasp manner.
The Study of Word Stress and Accent
Stress and accent are central, organizing features of grammar, but their precise nature continues to be a source of mystery and wonder. These issues come to the forefront in the phonetic manifestation of stress and accent, their cross-linguistic variation and the subtle and intricate laws they obey in individual languages. Understanding the nature of stress and accent systems informs all aspects of linguistic theory, methods, typology and especially the grammatical analysis of language data. These themes form the organizational backbone of this book. Bringing together a team of world-renowned phonologists, the volume covers a range of typological and theoretical issues in the study of stress and accent. It will appeal to researchers who value synergistic approaches to the study of stress and accent, careful attention to cross-linguistic variation, and detailed analyzes of both well-studied and understudied languages. The book is a lively testimony of a field of inquiry that shows progress, while also identifying questions for ongoing research.
English-Medium Instruction and Pronunciation
This book offers new insights into the language gains of adult learners enrolled in an English-medium instruction (EMI) degree programme. It provides longitudinal empirical evidence of the phonological gains of the learners; discusses which individual factors contribute to the changes in the learners' pronunciation and investigates whether and to what extent increased exposure to the target language in EMI classrooms leads to incidental learning of second language pronunciation. Furthermore, it expands on the discussions surrounding the Critical Period Hypothesis, the native-speaker norm, foreign language accent and the role of English as a Lingua Franca. The comparative and longitudinal design of the research study fills a significant gap in the literature and the book offers considerable original and important research-informed insights into the fields of EMI, bilingual education and second language acquisition. As such, it is a valuable resource and must-read book for researchers, practitioners and policymakers in these areas.

The Compositional Nature of Tense, Mood and Aspect: Volume 167
Bringing together fifty years' worth of cross-linguistic research, this pioneering monograph explores the complex interaction between tense, mood and aspect. It looks at the long way of combining elementary semantic units at the bottom of phrase structure up to and including the top of a sentence. Rejecting ternary tense as blocking compositionality, it introduces three levels obtained by binary tense oppositions. It also counters an outdated view on motion by assuming that change is not expressed as having an inherent goal but rather as dynamic interaction between different number systems that allows us to package information into countable and continuous units. It formally identifies the central role of a verb in a variety of argument structures and integrates adverbial modifiers into the compositional structure at different tense levels of phrase structure. This unique contribution to the field will be essential reading for advanced students and researchers in the syntax-semantics interface.
The Problematics of Writing Back to the Imperial Centre
In the wake of decolonization, colonialist narratives have systematically been rewritten from indigenous perspectives. This phenomenon is referred to as "the Empire writes back to the centre"--a trend that asserted itself in late twentieth-century postcolonial criticism. The aim of such acts of writing back is to read colonialist texts in a Barthesian way inside-out or ? l'envers, to deconstruct the Orientalist and colonialist dogmas, and eventually create a dialogue where there was only a monologue. Turning the colonial text inside-out and rereading it through the lens of a later code allows the postcolonial text to unlock the closures of its colonial precursor and change it from the inside. Under this critical scholarship, Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1899) has been a particularly influential text for Chinua Achebe and V. S. Naipaul. Their novels Things Fall Apart (1958) and A Bend in the River (1979) can be seen as a rewriting of Conrad's novella. However, before examining their different rewriting strategies, it would be fruitful to locate them within the postcolonial tradition of rewriting. While Achebe clearly stands as the leading figure of the movement, the Trinidadian novelist is, in fact, difficult to pigeonhole. Does Naipaul write back to, that is criticize, or does he rewrite, and in a way adopt and justify, imperial ideology? Since not all rewriting involves writing back in terms of anti-colonial critique, Naipaul's position continues to be explored as the enigmatic in-betweenness and double-edgedness of an "insider" turned "outsider." Taking cognizance of these different critical perceptions can become a way to effectively highlight Achebe's "(mis)-reading" and Naipaul's "(mis)-appropriation" of Conrad, a way to set the framework for the simulated conversation this book seeks to create between the three novelists.

The Sanskrit Alphabet with Vedic Extensions
The Sanskrit Alphabet consists of 56 Letters. There are Vowels, Semivowels, Row Class Consonants, Sibilants and the Aspirate. The Alphabet is called अक्षरम् in Sanskrit. Each letter is clearly enunciated with correct movement of the Tongue. Nasals lend a distinct twang and the Vedic chants are a delight to hear because of Accented Vowels.Reading an Avagraha, Ayogavaha, Visarga and Anusvara is properly explained as all the letters of the Alphabet are laid out threadbare. A section on Unicodes and Typesetting in Devanagari with fonts and keyboard IME supporting Vedic Extensions adds relevant value. While reading Vedic Texts, we notice some letters, characters and symbols that are in addition to the standard Sanskrit Alphabet. These characters are the accent marks, sandhi symbols, additional letters and punctuation, that are found in Vedic Sanskrit. There are various samhita recensions of the Veda manuscripts available today, and they differ in the usage of accents and symbols, and also in the enunciation while chanting aloud. Each ashram and gurukul and pundit or scholar needs to be aware of the tone and pitch during recitation and chanting of the Vedas. Even university professors and researchers delving into the Vedas need to be aware of the correct meaning and application of these verses. Furthermore, as we move from offset printing and metal type setting to the computer and smartphone era, this book serves as an invaluable resource. This book builds upon our popular title "The Sanskrit Alphabet".Infused with manuscript passages from the Satapatha Brahmana, Vajasaneyi Madhyandina Samhita, Samaveda and Krishna Yajurveda to illustrate Vedic Symbols.A useful and complete book for the novice, the amateur or the Scholar.

The Scent of Odisha
The Scent of Odisha ought to travel far and wide, not only because the Odisha musk needs olfactors but the universe requires it to live better. Overwhelming naturalness & credulity, which is why some believe that it is a mystic land. Has to be. The unimaginable & incredible happens in Odisha, defying calculations, assertions and wily aggressions. Odisha carries a great mystery within itself which has to be realised and a great potentiality which has to be actualised. Hence the Scent of Odisha is peculiar and quite different and yet not mulish. Scent knows no border and Odias know no delimitation. This cosmopolitanism of Odisha has a fragrance which has both the high and low notes, the steadfast & discursive narratives, the ingenue & chic souls and all the variants to make it a full-bodied fragrance. The enormity & diversity of Odisha canvas is daunting, and the Scent is a whiff around the wood. Much lies inside it. The dedication of the book to Koraput celebrates the simplicity and richness of the indigenous community. It is here that everything has started, even fourteen billion years ago and it is here that the next centuries are being crafted. The author's reflection in the essay, Origin of the Origin will speak more on this. Akshaya Mohanty deserved more from his fans, Madhu babu's nationalism should be made au courant, a Ministry of thinking is perhaps essential now and the unscrupulous Officers can't be allowed to derail progress. Many more waves rough out in the tranquil Buddha land, a gem in the east, where the Sun rises a bit early, every day. Every day Odisha has a new story and every day Odisha fetes the past. This swing is the romance of the Scent, the mystic spirit, maverick, uncorked but also corked. Inclusive of all shades but much beyond the ideas of right & wrong.

Small Changes in Teaching Big Results in Learning
★★★★★ "The changes may be small, but the effect of reading this book is HUGE!" - C. Browne★★★★★ "Must-read for pre-service, in-service teachers and teacher educators!" - A. Watanabe___________________Dr. John F. Fanselow is the classroom mentor/co-explorer you always wanted, whether you are teaching English as a second or foreign language or simply wanting to make your classroom instruction more engaging. The author of the groundbreaking book Breaking Rules challenges you to really notice what you are doing in your classroom, offers alternative activities to make your teaching more engaging, and then shows you how the activities work in videos with actual students.★★★★ "One could well teach English for a lifetime with no other ESOL book than this." Robert Oprandy, Professor Emeritus, University of the PacificSmall Changes in Teaching Big Results in Learning is simple enough to use as a textbook for beginning teachers in a teacher preparation course, challenging enough for experienced teachers to use for personal professional development, and the perfect companion for teachers who want to more deeply understand their reflective practice. What we and our students want to do, what we actually do, and what we think we do are different. The activities, essays and videos in Small Changes will enable you to decrease the gap between wanting, doing and thinking. The approach in Small Changes is at once simple and challenging: ◆ You watch videos introducing new activities and types of feedback.◆ You read more about the activities you saw in action.◆ You try them out in your own classes. As you master the activities and types of feedback introduced in this book, you will be able to move from teaching as a ritual to teaching as discovery. You will decrease the time you spend making lesson plans, quizzes and tests, looking for the ideal syllabus, and preparing worksheets and handouts and, as a result, you will have more time to analyze transcriptions and video clips of what you and your students are doing."I have had 'many jobs, but only one career: a love affair with an attempt to understand what the hell we are doing as teachers 'in minutely organized particulars' and from multiple perspectives." (Remarks by John F. Fanselow when the President of Teachers College presented him with the Teachers College, Columbia University Distinguished Alumni Award in 2005.)You can watch the videos supporting the book here: https: //itdi.pro/itdihome/small-changes-big-results-videos/You can listen to podcasts of John reading exceprts from Small Changes here: https: //itdi.pro/johnfanselow/small-changes-audiobook-podcasts/
