These records provide a complete compilation of court proceedings for Roane County, Tennessee spanning the years 1801-1805, along with the original full-name index which refers to the page number in the original document. "The WPA Records are, for the most part, carbon copies of the original that was typed on onion skin paper during the Depression. Since these records were typed on poor machines by people who did not type well either or read by persons not always sure of the older handwritten material, the results are often less than perfect. ... Sometimes there are water stains and burned edges around the paper."
New York in 1698
This compilation is a reconstruction of the 1698 census of New York. The author was aided by the surviving portions of the 1698 census and also by the statistical summaries of the census that have survived the passage of time. The author was able to locate more or less contemporary substitute sources (eg., militia lists, tax lists, church records, town minutes, etc.) and reconstruct the populations of the missing counties, towns, and manors. In all the author has identified by name 96% of the men, 50% of the women, and at least 40% of the children alive in the colony of New York in 1698.This work is arranged alphabetically by county and thereunder by town/subdivision or manor. The author begins each county chapter with a detailed discussion of the reconstruction variables: original source(s), spelling, layout of the original information, statistical recap, a brief history of the area under investigation at the time of the census, and a bibliography for further research on that county. The chapter-by-chapter lists of persons are arranged to conform to the earliest known transcription of the census of 1698. The volume concludes with a complete name index and, owing to the significant New Netherland heritage of early to mid-17th-century New York, a substantial number of Dutch names. The author's historical and methodological Introduction to the book provides insight into the missing census itself, making it must reading for any genealogist or historian planning to conduct research into this fascinating period.

Volume IX is the final part of the Directory of Scottish Settlers in North America, 1625-1825 series. The series is a compilation of miscellaneous Scottish references abstracted from a wide range of sources. Libraries in Scotland and abroad provide some interesting material. Most of the libraries were in Scotland, such as the National Library of Scotland and the Library of the University of St. Andrews. The author also consulted sources in London, such as the City of London Record Office and the National Maritime Museum. Published sources such as the Scots Magazine, the Gentleman's Magazine, and the Royal Gazette of North America provided valuable, if obscure, references. The matriculation rolls and the graduation records of the Scottish universities, for instance, identified the sons of colonists who were sent to Scotland for their education. The majority of these students bore Scottish surnames, but there were some with continental European names who may have been attracted by the courses offered, especially the medical ones.

This landmark work is presented for the first time since its debut in 1965 when a limited number of copies were privately printed. The study focuses on a portion of the Northern Neck of Virginia that today comprises primarily Essex and Richmond Counties but extends to neighboring counties as well. It begins with details about the interactions between native Indians and the incoming white man who largely moved in from Jamestown, the York River, and other points south, and then spins forward through the establishment of church parish boundaries, clearing of forested lands for corn and tobacco fields, the construction of private and public buildings, and the organization of local governments.The text is accompanied with three illustrations by the late Sydney E. King, a nationally famous documentary artist whose pictures are found at national monuments and in state and national parks across the nation. An additional illustration is drawn by Mrs. John L. Motley, Jr. (Viven Farish) from old family photographs of Colonel John Catlett's home that once stood above Port Royal, Virginia, which was in her childhood the home of her grandparents."Old" Rappahannock County was first created from Lancaster in 1656 and became extinct in 1692 when it was divided into Essex and Richmond Counties. The present county of the same name was formed in 1833 from Culpeper County and is located some 100 miles to the west. Because of the loss of the earliest court order books, historical details before 1683 are limited and are drawn by the author from Lancaster County records.The original mimeographed text has been retyped and reformatted with a new detailed index by Wesley E. Pippenger. Be advised that page citations to the original text are therefore modified in this edition. Their genealogical records bear witness to their good blood; their "maintenances de noblesse" are still in existence, brought with them from France, in simple accord with what they considered a family necessity, as much so as a house and furniture. Traditions are still carrying a pale reflection of coloring and wavering outline of them. Little stories of them are still to be met hanging on a withering memory like shriveled berries on a tree that the next blast will rend from their twigs and scatter on the ground.

It is located in the Northeastern corner of the state bordering Virginia. It is surrounded by the counties of Camden, Chowan, Hertford, Pasquotank, Perquimans counties N.C. and by Nansemond County, VA. The word "Slaves" in this title, is something of a misnomer. There are numerous free men and a number whose descriptions more closely fit those of Native-American than African American ancestry. All are indexed under "WORKERS." Through these records were created in Gates County, NC, the large majority of the workers, and their employers or owners, were from Nansemond County, Virginia. Their ages ranged from 8 to 72 years. Physical descriptions include age, complexion, height, scars or other distinguishing marks, and weight.

Gates County was created in 1778 from Hertford, Chowan and Perquimans counties, N.C. It is located in the Northeastern corner of the state bordering Virginia. It is surrounded by the counties of Camden, Chowan, Hertford, Pasquotank, Perquimans counties N.C. and by Nansemond County, VA. Many inhabitants of the "BURNED" counties of Hertford, N.C. and Nansemond, VA. which adjoin Gates County are mentioned in these early Court records. The court was held 4 times a year and heard such cases of assault, batteries, trespass, all breaches of the peace. They held authority of administration in intestate estates and orphans, granted license to build water grist mills, to taverns and ordinaries, and to build and maintain public ferries. The court also appointed Constables and Overseers of Roads and named the men who lived within the bounds to keep them in repair, as well as recommending three persons to the Governor, of whom one was made Sheriff, as well as imposing taxes for roads, courthouses and goals, appointed all county officers, civil and military, all lists of Jurors and probates of Wills. These records are extremely valuable for the researcher, especially if an ancestor died intestate (without a will), and in some instances a person may be listed in these court records and nowhere else in the county records.

The first American settlement in what is now Missouri was in 1787. Until 1803, France and Spain passed control of the Louisiana Territory back and forth. In the Louisiana Purchase, ownership passed into the hands of the United States. In 1805, Missouri became part of the Territory of Louisiana and remained so until 1812 when it became a Territory in its own name. At that time the population was 20,000 inhabitants. This area of Missouri Territory included the present states of Arkansas and Oklahoma until 1819 when Missouri applied for statehood. Congress then created the Arkansas Territory and included the area that is now the state of Oklahoma.This three-volume series presents land grants in present day Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma, 1787 to 1835. The grants included in this volume are those which were presented and confirmed until 1835. Many of the citizens had lived on their land for many years. The applicant gave the information regarding how he acquired the land, how long he had lived on it, and frequently gave information as to his occupation and the size of his family. Much genealogical and historical data is included in these land records: names, claims, time in Territory, children, marital status, etc. A full-name index adds to the value of this work.

It is located in the extreme southern section of the state bordering the Atlantic Ocean and Sussex County, Delaware. Early on, English, Irish and German immigrants settled this area. Due to being a border state, Worcester County had a very large population of Free people of color along with an active abolitionist movement. Tax Lists can be one of the most valuable tools available to researchers. When used carefully along with deeds and other legal records, one can construct a rather tight framework around an inhabitant of a given area. They are particularly useful in differentiating between person with identical names in the same area, and in pinpointing the time of their coming and going. These records include slaves by age and sex, horses, and cattle owned, type of houses and improvements, in some cases condition of land such as arable, woods, etc. The assessors in different 100's presented their returns differently, as no set form was provided.
