These records are extremely valuable for the researcher, especially if an ancestor died intestate (without a will), and in some instances a person may be listed in these court records and nowhere else in the county records.

The Ridouts of Bath
From 'The Ridouts of Sherborne', this second book follows my 3x great grandfather John RIDOUT as he moved from the rural Dorset town to the bustling Roman city of Bath in 1807; here he married, had children and started a cabinet-making business. Sadly, over time, John lost two wives and several of their children, but others survived and the family grew. The Ridouts are traced through to WW2 and beyond; latterly, the cold genealogical facts are gradually warmed with photographs, anecdotes and personal memories. Of the related families, some are traced & described: The SOMERTONs were a well known dynasty from Bristol, three generations of which had printed, published and written for newspapers of the day, most notably the Bristol Mercury. In 16th century Widcombe, just south of the city, lived farmers Tobias and Thomas ORCHARD; their children eventually moved into the centre: Joseph was a popular peruke maker in the Abbey Green, made famous by poet Christopher Anstey. Jacob, the Quaker, made biscuits; his sons Abraham & Isaac were friends of John Wesley and helped to bring Methodism to Bath. ARCHARD's pawnbroker's shop was prominent in 15 Bath Street; Thomas and his son were also local politicians. One branch of the Orchards married into the famous Irish Guinness family. Other prominent names include BEATON and OLLIS, two well known Bath families who lived, worked and died in Walcot, an historically fascinating thoroughfare in Bath. It was Walcot Street in which Elsie Beaton and Reginald Ridout, lived with their respective families, but met, married and eventually became my grandparents.

Vestry Minutes of St. Paul's Parish, Chowan County, North Carolina, 1701-1776 (2nd Edition)

It sits the northeastern portion of the state while be surrounded by the Albemarle Sound and the counties of: Bertie, Hertford, Gates and Perquimans. St. Paul's Parish adjoined the Upper Parish of Nansemond County, VA. After the NC/VA boundary was set in 1782, Chowan County acquired the former Nansemond County lands now lying in Gates County, NC. Chowan County was originally a large source of early migration into the Colony of NC. When the parishes were formed by the General Assembly of NC, the Vestries were assigned some of the civil administrative functions and all such civil functions were official in nature and the records of actions taken were recorded in the vestry books. Such records contained in the Vestry book contained among other things such things as: upkeep of bastard children; payment for the upkeep of the ferry; prosecution of fornicators; appointment of road work crews; apprentice young people to others in the parish for training in crafts or other livelihoods; providing clothing, food and shelter for the poor and elderly; burial of the dead and many, many other similar duties.

North Carolina Marriage Bonds and Certificates Series
This book contains a listing of marriage bonds before 1851; after 1851 marriage certificates were issued. Entries herein contain the full name of the groom, the full name of the bride, and the date. Additional information to be found within: Number of free white males of sixteen years and upward; number of free white males under sixteen years; number of free white females; number of all other free persons; number of slaves.
