This volume presents ten of Cicero's most significant orations, accompanied by selections from his extensive correspondence. Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 BC) was a Roman statesman, lawyer, political theorist, and philosopher who is widely considered one of Rome's greatest orators and prose stylists. His speeches offer invaluable insights into the political and social dynamics of the late Roman Republic. Included are such famous speeches as "In Catilinam I-IV", denouncing the conspiracy of Catiline, as well as "Pro Archia Poeta", a defense of the poet Archias' Roman citizenship. These works showcase Cicero's mastery of rhetoric, his profound understanding of Roman law and politics, and his unwavering commitment to the Republic. The selection of letters provides a more intimate glimpse into Cicero's personal life and thoughts. "Ten Orations of Cicero" remains essential reading for students of classical literature, Roman history, and political thought, providing a window into a pivotal era of Western civilization. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Casting the Art of Rhetoric with Theater and Drama

2025/06/20 出版

Casting the Art of Rhetoric with Theater and Drama: Taking Center Stage explores rhetoric and theater as they relate to one another, developing the understanding of rhetoric as theory and praxis. This book addresses rhetorical themes and cultural resonances, as well as the oft overlooked symbiosis of rhetoric and theater. Rather than addressing audiences as either observers of rhetorical artifacts or theatrical performance, this work demonstrates the intersection of the two, which strengthens theatrical events and their cultural significance. Overall, the volume showcases the many ways in which an understanding of the relationship between rhetorical and poetic theories can benefit dramatic convention and the breaking thereof.

Patient Sense

2025/06/20 出版

Technological innovations are rapidly changing the healthcare landscape. When nurses can complete portions of their clinical hours in virtual simulations and medical assistants might spend their entire careers providing patient care mediated by a screen, their understandings of their professional roles change. For future providers, rhetoric is at the heart of learning to communicate with patients and reframing their understandings of expertise. In Patient Sense, Lillian Campbell introduces a theory of rhetorical body work and applies it to three distinct healthcare contexts: clinical nursing simulations, physical therapy labs, and tele-observation in a virtual intensive care unit. Drawing on sociological frameworks, she defines rhetorical body work as paid physical, emotional, or discursive labor performed at the material or technological interface of worker-client bodies. Such work is devalued within social and institutional systems and often gendered and racialized. Campbell captures the value of providers' intuitive patient sense in the face of increasingly technology-mediated healthcare and intervenes in conversations about the future of healthcare training. Ultimately, she demonstrates that we will always need responsive healthcare providers whose rhetorical body work and patient sense cannot be replaced by technicians or algorithms.

Linguistics Out of the Closet

2025/06/19 出版

Queer linguistics - in its position as both a linguistic science of and for queer folk - is inherently agitating to the disciplinary anxiety of a general linguistic science. It represents, as all queer science does, a disruption of the normative modes of knowledge production and a displacement of academic authority. This collection reconsiders the placement of the queer subject, both as the researcher and as the researched, within and beyond the discipline and provides an intellectual space for the interdisciplinary (and sometimes anti-disciplinary) linguistic science of gender and sexuality. In three sections, it respectively considers the development of hyper-speciated queer linguistic subfields, the interdisciplinarity of intersectional approaches to queer language, and the institution of queer linguistic science both within and beyond the academy. Taken together, the essays in this collection confront the scientific and institutional discipline of linguistics from a queer vantage point, one which is perhaps inherently interdisciplinary in its formulation.

Performative Linguistic Space

2025/06/19 出版

This volume explores "performative linguistic space", namely a space which ushers or hinders linguistic practices. Space is made productive as a result of individuals who bring linguistic politics from diverse spaces into new ones. By moving away from the notions of discrete units of language and linguistic communities associated with a specific space, this volume suggests a fluid productive aspect of space. It goes beyond the assumed space-linguistic community association through ethnographic accounts that mediate linguistic anthropology, cultural geography, sociolinguistics, and deaf studies.

This book is the first of its kind to provide an integrative look at World Englishes, (second) language acquisition, and sociolinguistics in a variety of contexts of English around the globe with a focus on the language of children and adolescents. It thus aims to bridge the paradigm gaps that have been identified between these approaches but have rarely been explored in greater detail. The range of topics includes the areas of first and second language acquisition; sociolinguistic variation and awareness; language use and choice; family language policies; language attitudes and perception; modelling children's and adolescents' language in World Englishes; the role of child language acquisition in processes of language change; as well as methodologies of eliciting speech and writing from children and adolescents. The book combines qualitative and quantitative approaches and draws on psycholinguistic, corpus-linguistic, and ethnographic methodologies. What unites the contributions to the volume is that they all address the theoretical implications that a joint approach between World Englishes, sociolinguistics, and language acquisition has, i.e. why it is fruitful and how it can contribute to a deeper understanding of the different research paradigms.
