Publishing from the South
In 2022 Wits University Press marked its centenary, making it the oldest, most established university press in sub-Saharan Africa. While in part modelled on scholarly publishers from the global North, it has had to contend with the constraints of working under global South conditions: marginalisation within the university, budgetary limitations, small local markets, unequal access to international sales channels, and the privileging of English language publishing over indigenous languages. This volume explores what the Press has achieved, and what its modes of reinvention might look like. In widening and deepening our understanding of the Press as an example of a global South scholarly publisher, this volume asks how publishing can contribute to a broader understanding of Southern knowledge production. Featuring contributions from scholars, publishers and authors this multi-voiced volume showcases the history of the Press's publishing activities over 100 years: from documenting its evolution through book covers and giving credence to some of the leading black intellectuals and writers of the early 20th century and the success of those works in spite of their authors' racial marginalisation, to the role of women, both in publishing and in the spaces afforded to women's writing on the Press's list. The collection concludes with essays by contemporary authors who detail not only their experiences of working with Southern publishers, but also the politics and influences governing their decisions to choose the Press over a Northern publisher. Coding in Ajami Script
The research explores the morphosyntactic variations and scribal practices in the Old Kanembu manuscripts with a focus on identifying and bringing out the codes used by Borno 'Ulama'u in disseminating the exegesis (Tafsīr) of the Qur'ān in Old Kanembu (henceforth, OKb) and its modern variant into the linguistic spotlight for language documentation. OKb is one of the oldest Saharan languages that has been reduced in writing Ajami script since the early development and expansion of Islam into the Kanem-Bornu Empire between the 12th and the 16th centuries. OKb is the language whose footprint can only be traced to the ancient Qur'ānic manuscripts of old Borno. A modern-day variant of OKb, known as Tarjumo, is still in use by the modern-day Borno 'ulamā'u' in describing, interpreting, and analyzing written Arabic texts in the Kanuri society and the Kanembu/Kanuri community in the diaspora. OKb is used as the language of the Qur'ānic commentary and Tarjumo is the hybrid of OKb, modern Kanembu, and Kanuri used in both oral and written forms. In this work, we examined, identified, and analysed a selected part of the Qur'ān chapter 79 Sūrat- An-Nāziʿāt 'Those who pull out''.

This Element presents an investigation into the use of the gender inclusive strategy schwa in a corpus of tweets; the schwa is employed in Italian to overcome grammatical (feminine and masculine) morphological inflections, having at its core linguistic and social binarism. The investigation is set in a country where LGBTQIA communities still face institutional discrimination, yet it is contextualised in the growing work on inclusivity discussed in languages and contexts worldwide. The corpus is examined quantitatively and qualitatively, as well as read through a triangulation of two frameworks: Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies and Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis. The findings, obtained from corpus-assisted research and digital ethnography, show that the new linguistic strategy is used creatively, functionally, and not exclusively as a self-representation tool but is also a viable and powerful replacement for generic sexist language.

Fred Rogers is an American cultural and media icon, whose children's television program, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, ran for more than thirty years (1967-2001) on the Public Broadcasting System (PBS). Selling Books with Algorithms
In 1997 Amazon started as a small online bookseller. It is now the largest bookseller in the US and one of the largest companies in the world, due, in part, to its implementation of algorithms and access to user data. This Element explains how these algorithms work, and specifically how they recommend books and make them visible to readers. It argues that framing algorithms as felicitous or infelicitous allows us to reconsider the imagined authority of an algorithm's recommendation as a culturally situated performance. It also explores the material effects of bookselling algorithms on the forms of labor of the bookstore. The Element ends by considering future directions for research, arguing that the bookselling industry would benefit from an investment in algorithmic literacy.

Courtly Love in the Canterbury Tales
Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,7, University of Bayreuth, language: English, abstract: Courtly love embraces a beautiful lady, married or unobtainable, who was the object of love for a knight. In general courtly love was secret and between man and woman of noble status and it was not practiced between husbands and wives. Such relationships did not exist in real medieval life. Marriages were mostly arranged and women were seen as property to their husbands. It was more an "available fiction which informed the cultural climate, much as the wider conventions of chivalry did" (Rudd 2001:33). This is a relatively vague definition of the topic of courtly love and it only summarizes the most important points. This paper will work out the origins and the meaning of courtly love more intensive, watching its first origins and its appearance in the Romance of the Rose, and it will mention and describe every important characteristic. These characteristics will be a guideline to show Chaucer's treatment of the topic in his work The Canterbury Tales. Elements of courtly love appear in the Prologue, the Knight's Tale, the Merchant's Tale, and in the Franklin's Tale. These elements will be shown and explained. Finally a conclusion will summarize the most important points.

This research aims to analyze Folha Universal as an instrument for propagating the ideology of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, to construct logical and argumentative explanations about persuasion in religious discourse within Folha Universal's editorials and to establish links between the content of the editorials and the main articles in the newspaper. To our knowledge, there is no research that encompasses theories related to Discourse Analysis in relation to Folha Universal. Looking at it from the perspective of French Discourse Analysis will provide other researchers with opportunities to learn about the ideology of this important media outlet. In ordinary editorials, there are always enunciators who, most of the time, are not the ones writing them, but the newspaper itself. However, in Folha Universal we noticed something different: neither the author of the text nor the newspaper are enunciators, but the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God itself.

Old Delhi's Parallel Book Bazaar
This Element looks at Old Delhi's Daryaganj Sunday Book Market, popularly known as Daryaganj Sunday Patri Kitab Bazaar, as a parallel location for books and a site of resilience and possibilities. The first section studies the bazaar's spatiality - its location, relocation, and respatialisation. Three actors play a major role in creating and organising this spatiality: the sellers, the buyers, and the civic authorities. The second section narrativizes the biographies of the booksellers of Daryaganj to offer a map of the hidden social and material networks that support the informal modes of bookselling. Amidst order and chaos, using their specialised knowledge, Daryaganj booksellers create distinctive mechanisms to serve the diverse reading public of Delhi. Using ethnography, oral interviews, and rhythmanalysis, this Element tells a story of urban aspirations, state-citizen relations, official and unofficial cultural economies, and imaginations of other viable worlds of being and believing.

Carrying Verbs Across the Channel
This book examines grammatical changes that took place in the medieval language contact situation between English and French from 1066 until 1500. It investigates structural copying phenomena and their connection with the lexicon, finding that copying of lexical verbs with a predicate-argument structure accelerated wider grammatical changes, and shows why the traditional notion of borrowing should be replaced with the more adequate concept of copying. The authors start by taking a fresh look at the relationship between Old French and Middle English in light of recent developments in the fi eld of linguistics, arguing that what has traditionally been seen as a diglossic situation (i.e., as contact between the dominating speakers of French and the native speakers of English) should instead be analysed through the framework of bilingualism. The two contact scenarios under scrutiny are the ones between Old French and Middle English and Middle English and the contact variety of Anglo-French. On the basis of their case studies they develop a holistic model of contact-induced change that integrates the bilingual individual as well as the speech community and its sociolinguistic background. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of language history and change, language contact and acquisition, sociolinguistics, multilingualism, and psycholinguistics.
Comparative Forms in British and American English
Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Grammar, Style, Working Technique, grade: 2,3, language: English, abstract: First, the development of adjective forms of comparison should be clarified from the old English untill nowadays to explain the shifts of comparative structures in two national standards. The major change in the development of comparative formation across time span is the shift in American English from synthetic to analytic comparatives. The Standard English shows another pattern of development: the change from analytic to synthetic comparatives. Secondly, the major differences between British and American varieties in the usage of adjective forms should be explained. Focusing on the syllabic structure and frequency of adjectives, it will be shown that American English prefers more analytic comparatives than British English. Additionally, American variety uses fewer comparatives of both synthetic and analytic kind than British variety (Gonzalez-Diaz 2008, Hilpert 2007, Mondorf 2009, Kyt繹 and Romaine 2000). Moreover, the investigation of different text types and complexity of those texts will help to explain the difference in usage of adjective comparison between two national standards. Finally, the development of American English in relation to British English will be outlined. In most cases, American English develops independently from British English in terms of adjective formation. American variety prefers innovations whereas British variety tends to preserve older features. This supports the idea that American English does not follow the steps of British English in terms of comparative structure change. So, to regard the American variety as an instance of colonial lag should be misleading. A better understanding of these issues will be presented in the following pages.

Nationalism in James Joyce織s "Ulysses"

There is no doubt that all these factors had their impact on literature. The relationship between writer and reader, look inside oneself, own consciousness was reflected on writers such as James Joyce. Irish author, worried about British-Irish conflict and engaged in nationalist question, made the Ulysses novel partially nationalistic in its intention. There is no doubt that in Ulysses, Joyce criticizes the utopian and cultural past of Ireland and ridicules any signs of English chauvinism and Anti- Semitism. At the same time, the author shows his hostility towards the Irish cultural nationalism, and the Catholic and Protestant ideologies. He also revises the concept of "Nation" which has been officially approved at the beginning of nineteenth century. The question remains which themes associated with nationalism does Joyce introduce in the novel. How does he present the characters and relationships between them? These topics are important to observe in order to reveal Joyce織s perception of the history. Further, how does he try to influence the reader by using methods referring to narrative composition, such as extraordinary style and language, allusions, literary devices, narrative structure? What is the author織s intention and meaning underlying the narrative composition? These subjects are necessary to observe to reveal how Joyce shows his struggle against nationalism. These decisions are not straight-forward and often involve dilemmas or tensions among competing stakeholders. Knowing our Value and our Values: Toward An Ethical Practice of Library Assessment is based around a central question: how can decision-making be clarified by applying relevant values? To answer that question, a lens of practical ethics is applied, drawing from the professional values of library and information science. Reading and Producing Texts
The study "Reading and Writing: the textual genres in circulation among students in Technical Education integrated to High School" analyzed the proposals for teaching reading and writing of textual genres worked on by teachers of different subjects at the IFRS - Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Sul, Bento Gon癟alves campus. The proposal was based on a preliminary observation by the researcher, a Portuguese Language and Brazilian Literature teacher at the institution, who noticed the common use of some textual genres in specific technical subjects in the areas of IT and farming, as well as in subjects in the high school curriculum. The genres identified and selected for interdisciplinary work were the review, the report and the script for a video lesson teaching the use of the CSS command table, designed to teach the construction of websites. The research prioritized reflection on the teaching methodology and the students' written production, while also questioning whether the genres in question suited the students' needs, both in school and in their personal and professional lives.
Epifanii Slavinetskii's Greek-Slavonic-Latin Lexicon Between East and West
The Greek-Slavonic-Latin Lexicon compiled by the Ruthenian monk Epifanii Slavinetskii (d. 1675, Moscow) is a valuable historical witness to the development of written language in the Early Modern East Slavic world. This study represents the first in-depth exploration of the dictionary's linguistic profile and structure. It addresses topics related to multilingualism, language attitudes, and language contact with reference to the dictionary's lexical material, and presents a systematic analysis of its sources, which comprise Western European reference works as well as Greek and Slavonic manuscripts and printed texts. Emphasis is additionally placed on specifically Ruthenian elements on multiple levels of language. The investigation of these topics enables us not only to revise and substantiate certain assumptions about Epifanii Slavinetskii and his legacy, but also opens a new window onto the interaction of written idioms in the Early Modern Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Muscovy.
