This book examines the pedagogical and professional experiences of a transnational group of teachers from the African continent and diaspora who made the decision to live and teach English in Japan. Through a layered analytical framework, it explores how these teachers struggle to negotiate their raciolinguistic identities in contexts that may prove to be professionally supportive in some cases but marginalizing in others. The author contends that although multiculturalism and diversity within ELT in Japan may currently seem to be more prevalent, the agency that Black teachers exercise in promoting their own cultures and language varieties may be constrained depending on the characteristics of the institutions in which they teach. The Coordination Office for the Preservation of Written Cultural Heritage (KEK) coordinates and optimises the preservation of original written materials and thus makes a significant contribution to safeguarding the cultural memory of Germany. Funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media and the Cultural Foundation of the German Federal States, the KEK aims at permanently preserving the written cultural heritage in German archives, libraries, museums and other memorial institutions. Since its foundation in 2011, the KEK has funded over 1,000 projects from individual restoration to mass deacidification.With the international 'Preservation in Perspective' conference, held in 2021 at the James-Simon-Galerie in Berlin, the KEK has opened a forum for international exchange on preservation and the strategies that will determine future action in this field. The papers presented at the conference discussed current developments, synergies with digitisation projects and opportunities for international cooperation. This book contains two early papers written by Ronald E. Day while he was a student at the University of California, Berkeley, during 1992-1993, which mark the beginnings of his deconstruction of the modern conception of information as the latest form of Western metaphysics. The themes in these two pieces run throughout his later works. The papers demonstrate the intersection of formalist poetics and information science, and the appearance of phenomenology and critical theory in information studies. The problematics that they analyze, that of the temporality of information systems and the phenomenological appearance and constitution as knowledge of natural entities, along with the intersection of politics and information studies, remain relevant today.Ronald E. Day is Professor of Information and Library Science at University of Indiana Bloomington. His research is in the philosophy, history, politics, and culture of information, documentation, knowledge, and communication in the 20th and into the 21st centuries in the U.S. and Western Europe and in the discipline of Library and Information Science. The approach he takes is that of Critical Information Studies/ Critical Informatics. In this approach I use rhetorical, conceptual, and historical analyses. Along with many articles and book chapters, he has written Indexing it All: The Subject in the Age of Documentation, Information, and Data (MIT Press, 2014) and The Modern Invention of Information: Discourse, History, and Power (Southern Illinois University Press, 2001). Comparative Forms in British and American English
Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Grammar, Style, Working Technique, grade: 2,3, language: English, abstract: First, the development of adjective forms of comparison should be clarified from the old English untill nowadays to explain the shifts of comparative structures in two national standards. The major change in the development of comparative formation across time span is the shift in American English from synthetic to analytic comparatives. The Standard English shows another pattern of development: the change from analytic to synthetic comparatives. Secondly, the major differences between British and American varieties in the usage of adjective forms should be explained. Focusing on the syllabic structure and frequency of adjectives, it will be shown that American English prefers more analytic comparatives than British English. Additionally, American variety uses fewer comparatives of both synthetic and analytic kind than British variety (Gonzalez-Diaz 2008, Hilpert 2007, Mondorf 2009, Kyt繹 and Romaine 2000). Moreover, the investigation of different text types and complexity of those texts will help to explain the difference in usage of adjective comparison between two national standards. Finally, the development of American English in relation to British English will be outlined. In most cases, American English develops independently from British English in terms of adjective formation. American variety prefers innovations whereas British variety tends to preserve older features. This supports the idea that American English does not follow the steps of British English in terms of comparative structure change. So, to regard the American variety as an instance of colonial lag should be misleading. A better understanding of these issues will be presented in the following pages.
