Digital Voices
As the most popular and fastest growing form of media today, the podcast is a vital tool for creative writing courses in their bid to become more dynamic, interactive, inclusive, and multi-modal. Exploring the benefits of podcasting as both a pedagogical resource and as an important medium of expression for young writers, Digital Voices illuminates how podcasts can help every student forge personal connections to the content of their creative work and instruction they receive, no matter their background or experience. Beginning with the history of the podcast and the opportunities it affords today, this book moves through the benefits of bringing this popular medium into the workshop, demonstrating how it can aid in the creation of "Many Voices classrooms" and new metacognitive and introspective learning strategies, offer students new methods of evaluating creative products, and enhance inclusive access for a truly intersectional classroom. Other topics examined include the technical aspects of creating narrative fiction, poetry and nonfiction podcasts; how instructors might best curate podcasts for their classes; guidance on using podcasts to create scaffolding for teaching creative writing craft elements in different modes; and the ways of using author podcasts to demystify the writerly mystique. With each chapter featuring a section on practical application in the classroom, hints and tips from teacher-podcasters, and suggested student assignments, Digital Voices is an accessible primer, offering both a critical examination of the medium and a practical guide to putting the concepts discussed into practice.
Shakespeare and the Evolution of the Human Umwelt
Shakespeare and the Evolution of the Human Umwelt brings together research on Shakespeare, biosemiotics, ecocriticism, epigenetics and actor network theory as it explores the space between nature and narrative in an effort to understand how human bodies are stories told in the emergent language of evolution, and how those bodies became storytellers themselves. Chapters consider Shakespeare's plays and contemporary works, such as those of Barbara Kingsolver and Margaret Atwood, or productions for which Shakespeare is a genetic forebear, as evolutionary artefacts which have helped to shape the human umwelt--the species-specific linguistic habitat that humans share in common. The work investigates the juncture where semisphere meets biosphere and illuminates the role that narrative plays in our construction of the world we occupy. The plays of Shakespeare, as works that have had unparalleled cultural diffusion, are uniquely situated to speak to the ways in which ideas and the texts they use as vehicles are always material, always environmental, and always alive. The book discusses Shakespeare's works as vital nodes in our cultural, historical, moral and philosophical networks, but also as environmental actors in and of themselves. Plays are presented alternately as digitally encoded bits of culture awaiting their connection to an analog world, or as bacteria interacting with living organisms in both productive and destructive ways, altering their structure and creating new meaning through movement that is simultaneously biological and poetic. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of ecocriticism looking to model ecocritical readings and bridge gaps between scientific, philosophical and literary thinking.

Who Counts? Ghanaian Academic Publishing and Global Science
Since the 1990s, global academic publishing has been transformed by digitisation, consolidation and the rise of the internet. The data produced by commercially-owned citation indexes increasingly defines legitimate academic knowledge. Publication in prestigious 'high impact' journals can be traded for academic promotion, tenure and job security. African researchers and publishers labour in the shadows of a global knowledge system dominated by 'Northern' journals and by global publishing conglomerates. This book goes beyond the numbers. It shows how the Ghanaian academy is being transformed by this bibliometric economy. It offers a rich account of the voices and perspectives of Ghanaian academics and African journal publishers. How, where and when are Ghana's researchers disseminating their work, and what do these experiences reveal about an unequal global science system? Is there pressure to publish in 'reputable'. international journals? What role do supervisors, collaborators and mentors play? And how do academics manage in conditions of scarcity? Putting the insights of more than 40 Ghanaian academics into dialogue with journal editors and publishers from across the continent, the book highlights creative responses, along with the emergence of new regional research ecosystems. This is an important Africa-centred analysis of Anglophone academic publishing on the continent and its relationship to global science.
Are Books Still 'Different'?
The famous 1962 precedent at the Restrictive Practices Court of the United Kingdom, 'Books are different, ' is still the reasoning behind many cultural policies around the world, building on longstanding assumptions surrounding 'the book'. As this suggests, the 'difference' of the book as a unique form of cultural (rather than economic) production has acquired a powerful status. But are books still different? In (somewhat provocatively) asking this question from a network-oriented and interdisciplinary perspective (book studies/literary studies), this Element inquires into the notion of 'difference' in relation to books. Challenging common notions of 'bibliodiversity, ' it reconsiders the lack of diversity in the publishing industry. It also engages with the diversifying potentials of the digital literary sphere, offering a case study of Bernardine Evaristo's industry activities and activism, the Element concludes with thoughts on bookishness, affect and networked practice. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
White Literary Taste Production in Contemporary Book Culture
Despite initiatives to 'diversify' the publishing sector, there has been almost no transformation to the historic racial inequality that defines the field. This Element argues that contemporary book culture is structured by practice that operates according to a White taste logic. By applying the notion of this logic to an analysis of both traditional and new media tastemaking practices, White Literary Taste Production in Contemporary Book Culture examines the influence of Whiteness on the cultural practice, and how the long-standing racial inequities that characterize Anglophone book publishing are supported by systems, institutions and platforms. These themes will be explored through two distinct but interrelated case studies-women's literary prizes and anti-racist reading lists on Instagram-which demonstrate the dominance of Whiteness, and in particular White feminism, in the contemporary literary discourse.
Linguistic and Cultural Challenges in Translating Humour
This study explores the different types of humour identified in the two comedy plays: Al-Za'eem by Farouk Sabry and Al-Wad Sayed Al-Shaghal by Samir Abdulazim. The humour identified in the two plays posed both cultural and linguistic problems in subtitling as an audiovisual translation domain. The study also investigated the translation strategies employed by the subtitler in overcoming the complex issues encountered. This complexity and challenge were magnified by the use of wordplay or monocultural references along with the multisemiotic nature of the audiovisual translation domain. Moreover, linguistic and cultural humour necessitated the implementation and the utilisation of interventional translation strategies on the subtitler's part to ensure the preservation of the SL humorous force to the same or a similar humorous effect in the TL. The subtitler's options and choices were also affected by the internal and external factors and parameters surrounding humour. The subtitling process faced technical constraints that limited the space and time given to the process of subtitling, which in turn, resulted in a doubling of the subtitler's burden and challenge.

This Is a Classic
This Is a Classic illuminates the overlooked networks that contribute to the making of literary classics through the voices of multiple translators, without whom writers would have a difficult time reaching a global audience. It presents the work of some of today's most accomplished literary translators who translate classics into English or who work closely with translation in the US context and magnifies translators' knowledge, skills, creativity, and relationships with the literary texts they translate, the authors whose works they translate, and the translations they make. The volume presents translators' expertise and insight on how classics get defined according to language pairs and contexts. It advocates for careful attention to the role of translation and translators in reading choices and practices, especially regarding literary classics.

Dialect Variation in Northern Middle English
This book investigates the concept of the Northern Middle English dialect area as largely homogenous, taking its core data from four Northern manuscripts of the devotional poem, The Pricke of Conscience. The NME area has been little studied, due largely to a lack of localised manuscripts. A Linguistic Atlas of Late Mediaeval English is an invaluable resource for the dialectologist, but where anchor texts are lacking, it cannot form a sole basis for study. This book approaches dialect study in the region from a different angle, compiling and comparing linguistic data from its core manuscripts to determine what variation can be observed. Each manuscript is also considered in its codicological and sociolinguistic context, using scribal behaviour as a means of illuminating the possible provenances of manuscripts and their language types. Finally, the data is considered alongside similar information from edited texts from this region, to place it in its proper context and examine what patterns of variation emerge. The findings of this study show a greater range of variation across the NME region than traditional descriptions would indicate. The variation attested demonstrates that some features previously held to be 'non-northern' or anomalous are, in fact, organically and consistently in use in this area. It identifies and describes five observable NME language varieties. The combination of textual and codicological evidence enables suggestions to be made about the identity of several of the scribes examined, connecting language varieties to occupation and possible provenance. This book presents a more nuanced, heterogeneous picture of the NME region, which may serve as a basis for further study in the area.
Reading Picture Books with Infants and Toddlers
Reading picture books with infants and toddlers facilitates their early language development, with far-reaching benefits for their later reading abilities and academic achievement. While the importance of reading books with children aged from 3 to 5 years is widely recognised, the benefits of reading with much younger children from 0 to 3 years, who are still engaged in learning their first language, are less well understood. This book will explore the seemingly simple practice of reading picture books with infants and toddlers aged 0-3 years, from a range of perspectives. Not only do book-focused adult-child interactions support language and early literacy development in multiple ways, such interactions can also, at the same time, foster intellectual, social, emotional, and spiritual growth. By weaving together in an accessible manner the insights from several different discipline areas, this book will explain how and why reading with infants and toddlers has such power to enrich their lives.Providing an evidence-based, theoretically informed account, Reading Picture Books with Infants and Toddlers supports educators, parents, and caregivers with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to provide frequent, enjoyable, and language-rich reading experiences with infants and toddlers.
Positive and Negative Capitalism
Both forms of interpersonal meanings, the use of appraisal and the use of irony, take part in an inferential model of communication, in which the right inferences or assumptions on the part of the interlocutor are crucial to the success of communication. This research aims to describe various ways of linguistic realization of interpersonal meanings in language use; the purpose of this description is to show that our choice of words may not only transmit ideology but also adhere to hegemonic or dominant discourses. Ideological stance is considered from a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) perspective which delves into the dialectal relationship between discursive and social structures (Fairclough, 1989). The analytical framework is based on Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 1994; Halliday & Matthiessen, 2014), mostly on Appraisal Theory (Martin & Rose, 2003; Martin & White, 2005). In order to show some different strategies to convey ideology, the use of appraisal and irony in Moore's film Capitalism: A love story (2009) is analysed. Qualitative methods are adopted to analyse the data. Findings show that our lexical choices may disclose an adherence to dominant ideologies.

I'm recommending it to all the authors I know including those whose books I share through my Bedside Reading program." -Jane Ubell-Meyer, CEO, Bedside Reading, former TV producer, Good Morning America, Entertainment Tonight, WSJ-TV Whether your book is being released through a commercial publisher or an academic press, or you are self-publishing it, as the author, you can and should play a crucial role in getting your title seen, talked about, and sold. And while you may watch dozens of authors pitch their books on TV, in social media, and in bookstores, they represent only a fraction of the writers who come out with new books each year. What do they know that you don't? They know what to do to get attention for themselves and, more important, for their books-and as you will discover in book publishing veteran Jan Yager's How to Promote Your Book, you can, too. The book is divided into three sections. Part One begins with a look at promotion basics. These include knowing what your book's marketplaces are, who your audience is, how the media is divided, the elements involved in publicity, and how to create an effective promotional timeline. Once you understand the basics, Part Two focuses on the ways to package and market yourself to the various book and media outlets. It discusses putting together professional looking press releases and media kits. It also explains how to obtain endorsements and reviews, as well as how to generate speaking engagements and interviews with journalists; bloggers; and radio, TV, and podcast hopes. Part Three provides a plan that covers the fi rst three months of an author's publicity program-from the day the book is formally released through all the media events that have been lined up. Throughout the book, you will find insets that answer important questions such as, "What are the real costs involved?" and "Should I promote myself or hire a publicists?" Just as important, the author includes a valuable resource guide that provides the names, addresses, and links to many of the key places covered in the book. Jan Yager has enjoyed a fabulous career as both a best-selling author and a publisher. She has been interviewed by many of the top shows on TV and radio. In How to Promote Your Book, she lets you in on what she has done-both for herself and for her authors-to open the door to effective publicity.

Computer-assisted simultaneous interpreting
The present work explores computer-assisted simultaneous interpreting (CASI) from a primarily cognitive perspective. Despite concerns over the potentially negative impact of computer-assisted interpreting (CAI) tools on interpreters' cognitive load (CL), this hypothesis has thus far remained untested. Furthermore, previous research has been restricted to the evaluation of the CASI product. Hence, a methodology for the process-oriented evaluation of CASI and the empirical evidence for its cognitive modelling were missing. Overcoming these limitations appears essential to advance CAI research, particularly to foster a deeper understanding of the cognitive aspects of CAI through a validated research methodology and to determine the feasibility of the integration of CAI tools into the interpreting process. Therefore, this dissertation tested and empirically validated a methodology for the combined exploration of the product and process of CASI. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected during an eyetracking experiment at the Translation & Cognition Center of the University of Mainz. The study followed a convergent mixed-method and multi-method approach and involved nine MA advanced interpreting students. Prior to the experimental task, the informants were trained in the use of the three terminology support tools compared during the experiment, i. e. a digital glossary in PDF format, a CAI tool with manual look-up and a mock-up CAI tool with integrated automatic speech recognition (ASR) for terminology. After several pre-tests, the participants interpreted three speeches from English into their native German using a different tool each time. To increase comparability between the three conditions and control for potentially confounding variables, the speeches prepared ad-hoc for data collection were validated during a pilot study. The students' gaze data and deliveries were recorded and analysed. Qualitative data on the informants' perception of the tools were coll

Teaching Writing, Rhetoric, and Reason at the Globalizing University
This timely intervention into composition studies presents a case for the need to teach all students a shared system of communication and logic based on the modern globalizing ideals of universality, neutrality, and empiricism. Based on a series of close readings of contemporary writing by Stanley Fish, Asao Inoue, Doug Downs and Elizabeth Wardle, Richard Rorty, Slavoj Zizek, and Steven Pinker, this book critiques recent arguments that traditional approaches to teaching writing, grammar, and argumentation foster marginalization, oppression, and the restriction of student agency. Instead, it argues that the best way to educate and empower a diverse global student body is to promote a mode of academic discourse dedicated to the impartial judgment of empirical facts communicated in an open and clear manner. It provides a critical analysis of core topics in composition studies, including the teaching of grammar; notions of objectivity and neutrality; empiricism and pragmatism; identity politics; and postmodernism. Aimed at graduate students and junior instructors in rhetoric and composition, as well as more seasoned scholars and program administrators, this polemical book provides an accessible staging of key debates that all writing instructors must grapple with.

Intralingual Translation of British Novels
Shortlisted for the ESSE 2022 Book AwardsShortlisted for the 2022 SAES / AFEA Research Prize Building on an upsurge of interest in the Americanisation of British novels triggered by the Harry Potter series, this book explores the various ways that British novels, from children's fiction to travelogues and Book Prize winners, have been adapted and rewritten for the US market. Drawing on a vast corpus of over 80 works and integrating the latest research in multimodality and stylistics, Linda Pilli癡re analyses the modifications introduced to make British English texts more culturally acceptable and accessible to the American English reader. From paratextual differences in cover, illustrations, typeface and footnotes to dialectal changes to lexis, tense, syntax and punctuation, Pilli癡re explores the sociocultural and ideological pressures involved in intralingual translation and shows how the stylistic effects of such changes - including loss of meaning, voice, rhythm and word play - often result in a more muted American edition. In doing so, she reveals how homing in on numerous small adjustments can provide fascinating insights into the American publishing process and readership.
