Analyzing Discourse
Rather than applying a rigid theory or surveying a variety of approaches, Analyzing Discourse provides a methodology that has been refined over years of use. As an introduction to discourse analysis for linguistic field workers, it is practical, addressing issues commonly confronted by field linguists. The material follows a functional and cognitive approach that seems to be a good approximation of how discourse is actually produced and understood. Since the aim of the manual is introductory rather than comprehensive, most chapters are relatively short, and the whole can be covered in fifteen classroom hours. References are provided for further reading on the topics discussed. The manual can be used individually or in group sessions, such as in a formal course or a linguistic seminar. In a group setting, concepts can be illustrated by examining texts beyond those provided in the manual. This revision corrects the errata of the classic first edition, which remains a solid presentation of the basic concepts for analyzing discourse.
Creativity and Anxiety: Making, Meaning, Experience
Anxiety is perhaps the defining psychological malady of our age, whereas creativity is seen as an almost unassailable good, its importance heralded and promoted in a range of disciplines and domains. A number of diverse thinkers and researchers have tried to unpick the relationship between anxiety and creativity, and this short book explores and connects some of their ideas and findings. Drawing on psychoanalysis and neuroscience, existential psychology and mindfulness, literary studies and philosophy, this book places a range of different disciplines in dialogue. It explores how creativity and anxiety might impact one another, and argues for the importance of establishing a diverse and inclusive cultural space which everyone can draw from and contribute to.
Art as a Way of Listening

Migration and Mutation
Spanning four centuries from the Renaissance to today's avant-garde, Migration and Mutation explores how the sonnet has evolved in and out of translation. Contributors examine little-studied translation trajectories in the early modern period, such as the pivotal role of France between Italy and England or the first German sonnets and their Italian, French, Dutch and Scottish origins. Essays then shed new light on major European sonneteers In the 19th and 20th centuries, including Shakespeare, Keats, Yeats, Rilke and Pessoa, alongside lesser-known contemporaries and with novel approaches. And finally, contributors explore how translation and adaptation create metaphorical space in the 21st century. Migration and Mutation also pays attention to the political or subversive dimension of the sonnet, with essays on women, gay or postcolonial reclaimings of the sonnet and recent experiments such as post-Soviet Sonnets on shirts by Genrikh Sagpir. It takes the sonnet out of the confines of enclosed national traditions bringing it into renewed contact with mostly European, but also other, cultures.

Machine Learning in Translation
Machine Learning in Translation introduces machine learning (ML) theories and technologies that are most relevant to translation processes, approaching the topic from a human perspective and emphasizing that ML and ML-driven technologies are tools for humans. Providing an exploration of the common ground between human and machine learning and of the nature of translation that leverages this new dimension, this book helps linguists, translators, and localizers better find their added value in a ML-driven translation environment. Part One explores how humans and machines approach the problem of translation in their own particular ways, in terms of word embeddings, chunking of larger meaning units, and prediction in translation based upon the broader context. Part Two introduces key tasks, including machine translation, translation quality assessment and quality estimation, and other Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks in translation. Part Three focuses on the role of data in both human and machine learning processes. It proposes that a translator's unique value lies in the capability to create, manage, and leverage language data in different ML tasks in the translation process. It outlines new knowledge and skills that need to be incorporated into traditional translation education in the machine learning era. The book concludes with a discussion of human-centered machine learning in translation, stressing the need to empower translators with ML knowledge, through communication with ML users, developers, and programmers, and with opportunities for continuous learning. This accessible guide is designed for current and future users of ML technologies in localization workflows, including students on courses in translation and localization, language technology, and related areas. It supports the professional development of translation practitioners, so that they can fully utilize ML technologies and design their own human-centered ML-driven translation workflows and NLP tasks.
Reading Spaces in Modern Japan
This study provides an accessible overview of the range of reading spaces in modern Japan, and the evolution thereof from a historical perspective. After setting the scene in a short introduction, it examines the development of Kanda-Jinbōchō, the area of Tokyo that has remained for a century the location in Japan most bound up with books and print culture. It then considers the transformation of public reading spaces, explaining how socio-economic factors and changing notions of space informed reading practices from the early modern era to the present. This led, in turn, to changes in bookstores, libraries, and other venues. Finally, it briefly considers the nature and impact of virtual reading spaces, such as the representation of reading and reading spaces in popular culture, and new modes of reading mediated by the digital realm as well as the multifaceted relationship between these and older forms of reading practice.
Publishing Contracts and the Post Negotiation Space
Many writers dream of having their work published by a respected publishing house, but don't always understand publishing contract terms - what they mean for the contracting parties and how they inform book-publishing practice. In turn, publishers struggle to satisfy authors' creative expectations against the industry's commercial demands. This book challenges our perceptions of these author-publisher power imbalances by recasting the publishing contract as a cultural artefact capable of adapting to the industry's changing landscape. Based on a three-year study of publishing negotiations, Katherine Day reveals how relational contract theory provides possibilities for future negotiations in what she describes as a 'post negotiation space'. Drawing on the disciplines of cultural studies, law, publishing studies and cultural sociology, this book reveals a unique perspective from publishing professionals and authors within the post negotiation space, presenting the editor as a fundamental agent in the formation and application of publishing's contractual terms.

The Spaces of Bookselling
The spaces of bookselling have as many stories to tell as do the books for sale. More than static backgrounds for bookselling, these dynamic spaces both shape individual and collective behaviors and perceptions and are shaped by the values and practices of booksellers and book buyers. This Element focuses primarily on bookselling in the United States from the 19th through the 21st centuries and examines three key bookselling spaces-the store, the street, and the catalogue. Following an introduction, the second section considers how the material space of bookstores shapes social engagement in and cultural values associated with the bookstore. The third section turns to itinerant and sidewalk booksellers and the ways in which they use the physical, social, and legal space of the street to craft geographies of belonging. And the final section pages through bookseller catalogues, examining them as a significant genre that works to spatialize the bookstore.

This Is a Classic
This Is a Classic illuminates the overlooked networks that contribute to the making of literary classics through the voices of multiple translators, without whom writers would have a difficult time reaching a global audience. It presents the work of some of today's most accomplished literary translators who translate classics into English or who work closely with translation in the US context and magnifies translators' knowledge, skills, creativity, and relationships with the literary texts they translate, the authors whose works they translate, and the translations they make. The volume presents translators' expertise and insight on how classics get defined according to language pairs and contexts. It advocates for careful attention to the role of translation and translators in reading choices and practices, especially regarding literary classics.
Digital Voices
As the most popular and fastest growing form of media today, the podcast is a vital tool for creative writing courses in their bid to become more dynamic, interactive, inclusive, and multi-modal. Exploring the benefits of podcasting as both a pedagogical resource and as an important medium of expression for young writers, Digital Voices illuminates how podcasts can help every student forge personal connections to the content of their creative work and instruction they receive, no matter their background or experience. Beginning with the history of the podcast and the opportunities it affords today, this book moves through the benefits of bringing this popular medium into the workshop, demonstrating how it can aid in the creation of "Many Voices classrooms" and new metacognitive and introspective learning strategies, offer students new methods of evaluating creative products, and enhance inclusive access for a truly intersectional classroom. Other topics examined include the technical aspects of creating narrative fiction, poetry and nonfiction podcasts; how instructors might best curate podcasts for their classes; guidance on using podcasts to create scaffolding for teaching creative writing craft elements in different modes; and the ways of using author podcasts to demystify the writerly mystique. With each chapter featuring a section on practical application in the classroom, hints and tips from teacher-podcasters, and suggested student assignments, Digital Voices is an accessible primer, offering both a critical examination of the medium and a practical guide to putting the concepts discussed into practice.

Who Counts? Ghanaian Academic Publishing and Global Science
Since the 1990s, global academic publishing has been transformed by digitisation, consolidation and the rise of the internet. The data produced by commercially-owned citation indexes increasingly defines legitimate academic knowledge. Publication in prestigious 'high impact' journals can be traded for academic promotion, tenure and job security. African researchers and publishers labour in the shadows of a global knowledge system dominated by 'Northern' journals and by global publishing conglomerates. This book goes beyond the numbers. It shows how the Ghanaian academy is being transformed by this bibliometric economy. It offers a rich account of the voices and perspectives of Ghanaian academics and African journal publishers. How, where and when are Ghana's researchers disseminating their work, and what do these experiences reveal about an unequal global science system? Is there pressure to publish in 'reputable'. international journals? What role do supervisors, collaborators and mentors play? And how do academics manage in conditions of scarcity? Putting the insights of more than 40 Ghanaian academics into dialogue with journal editors and publishers from across the continent, the book highlights creative responses, along with the emergence of new regional research ecosystems. This is an important Africa-centred analysis of Anglophone academic publishing on the continent and its relationship to global science.

White Literary Taste Production in Contemporary Book Culture
Despite initiatives to 'diversify' the publishing sector, there has been almost no transformation to the historic racial inequality that defines the field. This Element argues that contemporary book culture is structured by practice that operates according to a White taste logic. By applying the notion of this logic to an analysis of both traditional and new media tastemaking practices, White Literary Taste Production in Contemporary Book Culture examines the influence of Whiteness on the cultural practice, and how the long-standing racial inequities that characterize Anglophone book publishing are supported by systems, institutions and platforms. These themes will be explored through two distinct but interrelated case studies-women's literary prizes and anti-racist reading lists on Instagram-which demonstrate the dominance of Whiteness, and in particular White feminism, in the contemporary literary discourse.
Linguistic and Cultural Challenges in Translating Humour
This study explores the different types of humour identified in the two comedy plays: Al-Za'eem by Farouk Sabry and Al-Wad Sayed Al-Shaghal by Samir Abdulazim. The humour identified in the two plays posed both cultural and linguistic problems in subtitling as an audiovisual translation domain. The study also investigated the translation strategies employed by the subtitler in overcoming the complex issues encountered. This complexity and challenge were magnified by the use of wordplay or monocultural references along with the multisemiotic nature of the audiovisual translation domain. Moreover, linguistic and cultural humour necessitated the implementation and the utilisation of interventional translation strategies on the subtitler's part to ensure the preservation of the SL humorous force to the same or a similar humorous effect in the TL. The subtitler's options and choices were also affected by the internal and external factors and parameters surrounding humour. The subtitling process faced technical constraints that limited the space and time given to the process of subtitling, which in turn, resulted in a doubling of the subtitler's burden and challenge.

Are Books Still 'Different'?
The famous 1962 precedent at the Restrictive Practices Court of the United Kingdom, 'Books are different, ' is still the reasoning behind many cultural policies around the world, building on longstanding assumptions surrounding 'the book'. As this suggests, the 'difference' of the book as a unique form of cultural (rather than economic) production has acquired a powerful status. But are books still different? In (somewhat provocatively) asking this question from a network-oriented and interdisciplinary perspective (book studies/literary studies), this Element inquires into the notion of 'difference' in relation to books. Challenging common notions of 'bibliodiversity, ' it reconsiders the lack of diversity in the publishing industry. It also engages with the diversifying potentials of the digital literary sphere, offering a case study of Bernardine Evaristo's industry activities and activism, the Element concludes with thoughts on bookishness, affect and networked practice. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Dialect Variation in Northern Middle English
This book investigates the concept of the Northern Middle English dialect area as largely homogenous, taking its core data from four Northern manuscripts of the devotional poem, The Pricke of Conscience. The NME area has been little studied, due largely to a lack of localised manuscripts. A Linguistic Atlas of Late Mediaeval English is an invaluable resource for the dialectologist, but where anchor texts are lacking, it cannot form a sole basis for study. This book approaches dialect study in the region from a different angle, compiling and comparing linguistic data from its core manuscripts to determine what variation can be observed. Each manuscript is also considered in its codicological and sociolinguistic context, using scribal behaviour as a means of illuminating the possible provenances of manuscripts and their language types. Finally, the data is considered alongside similar information from edited texts from this region, to place it in its proper context and examine what patterns of variation emerge. The findings of this study show a greater range of variation across the NME region than traditional descriptions would indicate. The variation attested demonstrates that some features previously held to be 'non-northern' or anomalous are, in fact, organically and consistently in use in this area. It identifies and describes five observable NME language varieties. The combination of textual and codicological evidence enables suggestions to be made about the identity of several of the scribes examined, connecting language varieties to occupation and possible provenance. This book presents a more nuanced, heterogeneous picture of the NME region, which may serve as a basis for further study in the area.
Positive and Negative Capitalism
Both forms of interpersonal meanings, the use of appraisal and the use of irony, take part in an inferential model of communication, in which the right inferences or assumptions on the part of the interlocutor are crucial to the success of communication. This research aims to describe various ways of linguistic realization of interpersonal meanings in language use; the purpose of this description is to show that our choice of words may not only transmit ideology but also adhere to hegemonic or dominant discourses. Ideological stance is considered from a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) perspective which delves into the dialectal relationship between discursive and social structures (Fairclough, 1989). The analytical framework is based on Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 1994; Halliday & Matthiessen, 2014), mostly on Appraisal Theory (Martin & Rose, 2003; Martin & White, 2005). In order to show some different strategies to convey ideology, the use of appraisal and irony in Moore's film Capitalism: A love story (2009) is analysed. Qualitative methods are adopted to analyse the data. Findings show that our lexical choices may disclose an adherence to dominant ideologies.

Predator Effect
The Predator Effect concerns predatory publishing -- it is the first to chart both the rise and impact of deceptive publishing. The author -- a scientific communications expert with 20 years' experience -- looks at how predatory journals had become an accepted part of scholarly publishing, reviewing in turn the history, development and impact of predatory journals. The book also puts their rise in context of wider issues such as Open Access and publication ethics. Other issues it addresses include: defining predatory journals, the history of predatory publishing practices, Beall's List, authors' motivations and the future of predatory publishing practices.
