Publishing Romance Fiction in the Philippines
The romance publishing landscape in the Philippines is vast and complex, characterised by entangled industrial players, diverse kinds of texts, and siloed audiences. This Element maps the large, multilayered, and highly productive sector of the Filipino publishing industry. It explores the distinct genre histories of romance fiction in this territory and the social, political and technological contexts that have shaped its development. It also examines the close connections between romance publishing and other media sectors alongside unique reception practices. It takes as a central case study the Filipino romance self-publishing collective #RomanceClass, analysing how they navigate this complex local landscape as well as the broader international marketplace. The majority of scholarship on romance fiction exclusively focuses on the Anglo-American industry. By focusing here on the Philippines, the authors hope to disrupt this phenomenon, and to contribute to a more decentred, rhizomatic approach to understanding this genre world.
Linguistics
Linguistics is often called the science of language, the study of the human capacity to communicate and organize thought using different tools (the vocal tract for spoken languages, hands for sign languages) and involving different abstract and tactile components. When you see something interesting or shocking, when you try to remember a fact or setting, express anger or love, you do this through the medium of language. When you read, sing, study, write, chat or daydream, language is at the heart of your experience. The study of linguistics is not just an investigation into words or sounds, but into the heart of humanity.
The Training of a Public Speaker
The power of eloquence to move and persuade men is universally recognized. To-day the public speaker plays a vital part in the solution of every great question and problem. Oratory, in the true sense, is not a lost art, but a potent means of imparting information, instruction, and persuasion. Eloquence is still "the appropriate organ of the highest personal energy." As one has well said, "The orator is not compelled to wait through long and weary years to reap the reward of his labors. His triumphs are instantaneous." And again, "To stand up before a vast assembly composed of men of the most various callings, views, passions, and prejudices, and mold them at will; to play upon their hearts and minds as a master upon the keys of a piano; to convince their understandings by the logic, and to thrill their feelings by the art of the orator; to see every eye watching his face, and every ear intent on the words that drop from his lips; to see indifference changed to breathless interest, and aversion to rapturous enthusiasm; to hear thunders of applause at the close of every period; to see the whole assembly animated by the feelings which in him are burning and struggling for utterance; and to think that all this is the creation of the moment, and has sprung instantaneously from his fiery brain and the inspiration imparted to it by the circumstances of the hour; this, perhaps, is the greatest triumph of which the human mind is capable, and that in which its divinity is most signally revealed." The aims and purposes of speaking to-day have radically changed from former times. Deliberative bodies, composed of busy men, meet now to discuss and dispose of grave and weighty business. There is little necessity nor scope for eloquence. Time is too valuable to permit of prolonged speaking. Men are tacitly expected to "get to the point," and to be reasonably brief in what they have to say.
Metatranslation
Metatranslation presents a selection of thirteen key essays by leading theorist, Theo Hermans, covering a span of forty years. The essays both trace Hermans' work and demonstrate how translation studies has evolved from the 1980s into the much more diverse and self-reflexive discipline it is today.
Writing and Desire
Writing and Desire is a sustained, multimovement exploration of how writers, particularly queer writers, think and feel through desire as central to their writing practice. In a time of political, social, global, and ecological unrest, how might we understand desire--the desire for things to be different, the desire for a better world--as a crucial dimension of contemporary human experience? What might such a recentering of desire offer us, personally and politically? And how is writing itself, as one of the primary ways through which we express and explore ourselves, central to the expression and exploration of desire? Drawing on recent theoretical work in queer theory and the new materialism, Jonathan Alexander studies a range of queer and trans writers and artists who center desire in their practice and argues that conceptualizing writing as desire allows us to reexperience both writing and our world as saturated with our dreams and wishes for change. In a book both elegant and unsettling, and by turns personal, analytic, and experimental, Alexander challenges us--and himself--to think about desire and writing as the deepest manifestation of our hopes for the future.

The Inclusive Speaker
As a professional speaker or communication professional, are you truly as inclusive as you think you are? Every year, communication professionals inadvertently shut the door in the face of hundreds of thousands of people with disabilities and elderly folks, adding to the stigma of exclusion, and leaving millions of dollars of potential revenue on the table in the process. This disconnect leaves people behind, broadens the digital divide, causes irreparable damage to individuals and brands, directly impacts the bottom lines of organizations, and contributes to the degradation of our social fabric. This is a huge societal problem, and this book means to help fix that. Through this book, author Denis Boudreau, a 22+ year web accessibility and digital equality veteran, shares his perspectives on systemic exclusion as being one of the greatest communication threats to face businesses today, and how brands can be more successful, simply by doing the right thing by their audience and empowering them to truly connect.

Successful Methods of Public Speaking
As you carefully study the successful methods of public speakers, as briefly set forth in this book, you will observe that there is nothing that can be substituted for personal sincerity. Unless you thoroughly believe in the message you wish to convey to others, you are not likely to impress them favorably. It was said of an eminent British orator, that when one heard him speak in public, one instinctively felt that there was something finer in the man than in anything he said. Therein lies the key to successful oratory. When the truth of your message is deeply engraved on your own mind; when your own heart has been touched as by a living flame; when your own character and personality testify to the innate sincerity and nobility of your life, then your speech will be truly eloquent, and men will respond to your fervent appeal.

Teaching Cultural Dexterity in Creative Writing
Aimed toward graduate student instructors and other creative writing educators, Teaching Cultural Dexterity in Creative Writing offers a formula for important changes in creative writing instruction-especially in literary/creative nonfiction, probing how instruction might become more inclusive and accessible for minoritized/marginalized student-authors. The book chapters use antiracist, trauma-informed, and anticolonial frameworks toward exploring the 21st-century professional, theoretical, and institutional concerns surrounding creative writing practices in North American higher education. As a result, the book explores ways creative writing pedagogies and theories might be adapted for racially and linguistically marginalized (by English) student-authors, who often inhabit minoritized positions within North American colleges and universities. Applying as a frame the notion of cultural dexterity as it is taught to medical professionals to allow them to engage effectively with patients from all backgrounds, ethnics groups and with all sensitivities, Teaching Cultural Dexterity in Creative Writing examines why and how creative writing instruction needs to be urgently renegotiated. In this essential text for all creative writing instructors, McCray provides all the tools necessary to take positive action with discussions of potential readings, writing prompts and sample course materials.

The Shiva Sutra of Vasugupta
The Shiva Sutra was revealed to and written down by Vasugupta (ca 875-925 CE). The Sutra is considered mystical and of divine origin. For Kashmir Shaivism, it is one of the most important key sources. It outlines the teachings of Shaiva non-dualism, where the focus is on attaining the Ultimate Reality in which everything is created and dissolved. This ultimate state is called Param Shiva and is beyond description. For attaining this state of Shiva for those who remember to reside in their own inherent-self-nature, which is of the nature of Shiva, no effort or no way is needed. For everyone else there are three ways for the attainment of Param Shiva described in the Shiva Sutra. There is no strict order given for meditating on the Sutra. It depends on one's stage of evolution. May this new translation contribute to the appreciation of the Shiva Sutra and deepen your meditation.

The Hroswitha Club and the Impact of Women Book Collectors
The Hroswitha Club was a group of women book collectors who met from 1944-2004 in the Eastern United States. Despite the fame of individual members like Henrietta Bartlett or Mary Hyde Eccles, there is no sustained study of the Club's work and legacy. This Element makes this history broadly accessible and focuses on how members shared knowledge and expertise and provided a space for legitimacy and self-growth in a period where women's access to formal education and academic institutions was limited. By making this network visible through an examination of archival records, library catalogs, and pamphlets, this project positions the Club as a case study for a more thorough examination of the ways that intersectional identities can make visible or obscure whose intellect, money, and resources have shaped the study of rare books in the United States.

Out of the Flames
High School students at Paulo Freire Social Justice Charter School in Chicopee, Massachusetts, want to go to college. They look to education to help them chart meaningful and fulfilling futures. The obstacles to their success are daunting. They live in urban neighborhoods similar to other inner-city environments across America where teen pregnancy, violence, gangs, poverty, food scarcity, and despair are the norm. And yet these students dare to hope that they can somehow move beyond "the flames" that could easily engulf their lives. Each entry in this book is a step toward taking control of who they are and where they are going. Each story is an effort to move "out of the flames" that they face on a day to day basis. To "own your story" means being able to change your story. This small book charts important changes that each writer has already made and signal that these changes will continue in the future. May these stories inspire others to look inward for the best in themselves and then to bring that goodness into the world. That is the best that we can all hope for.
Reading Bestsellers
Readers are essential agents in the production of bestsellers but bestsellers are not essential to readers' leisure pursuits. The starting point in this Element is readers' opinions about and their uses of bestselling fiction in English. Readers' relationships with bestsellers bring into view their practices of book selection, and their navigation of book recommendation culture. Based on three years of original research (2019-2021), including a quantitative survey with readers, interviews with social media influencers, and qualitative work with international Gen Z readers in a private Instagram chat space, the authors highlight three core actions contemporary multimodal readers make- choosing, connecting, and responding- in a transmedia era where on- and offline media practices co-exist. The contemporary multimodal reader, or the MMR3, they argue, illustrates the pervasiveness of recommendation culture, reliance on trusted others, and an ethic of responsiveness.

Australian Books and Authors in the American Marketplace 1840s-1940s
Shortlisted for the Walter McRae Russel Award 2019Australian Books and Authors in the American Marketplace 1840s-1940s explores how Australian writers and their works were present in the United States before the mid-20th century to a much greater degree than previously acknowledged. Drawing on fresh archival research and combining the approaches of literary criticism, print culture studies and book history, David Carter and Roger Osborne demonstrate that Australian writing was transnational long before the contemporary period. In mapping Australian literature's connections to British and US markets, their research challenges established understandings of national, imperial and world literatures.Carter and Osborne examine how Australian authors, editors and publishers engaged productively with their American counterparts, and how American readers and reviewers responded to Australian works. They consider the role played by British publishers and agents in taking Australian writing to America, and creating new opportunities for novelists to move between markets. Some of these writers, such as Christina Stead and Patrick White, remain household names; others who once enjoyed international fame, such as Dale Collins and Alice Grant Rosman, have been largely forgotten. The story of their books in America reveals how culture, commerce and copyright law interacted to create both opportunities and obstacles for Australian writers.

Discourse of the Inquisitive
Good communication skills are necessary for articulating learning, especially in online classrooms. It is often through writing that learners demonstrate their ability to analyze and synthesize the new concepts presented in the classroom. In other words, writing gives students the opportunity to work with the content of the classroom, making learning more active and, therefore, helping new concepts move more readily to long-term memory. Because writing-in the guise of discussion prompts, essays, research papers, and other projects-is generally the main type of assessment, it has a big impact on learners' grades. For students to succeed, therefore, it is important to know how to write well. Yet most writing professors spend the first minutes of every new course hearing about how their newly enrolled students hate writing; regrettably, their fear of writing affects their ability to communicate effectively. So, while their focus is to teach and model the writing process, writing professors must first spend a significant amount of time quelling the disquiet students feel about writing before helping them build skills and confidence in the writing process. When writing and communication instructors are successful, their students are better positioned to succeed as well. Discourse of the Inquisitive brings together professors and professor-writers from the Departments of Communication and English at APUS to offer their insights into good communication and how to articulate its form to others. From the basic building blocks of writing to directive feedback, from academic discourse to creative art forms, and from military students to adult learners, the anthology is filled with tips, tricks, and strategies to improve communication skills inside the classroom and out.

Cyborg, Autism, and The Posthuman
Discrimination, destruction, and death have been the souvenirs of anthropocentricism. Once humankind granted himself superiority and domination over nature and other beings, it gradually paved the way for human beings to freely practice abuse on animals and misuse nature to their own benefits. As hierarchical thinking naturalized through human society, it also affected various groups of people such as people of color or the disabled: they were deemed to be closer to animals and thus deserved to be mistreated. Donna Haraway introduced her notion of 'cyborg' in "A Cyborg Manifesto" (1985) to advertise a deconstructive weltanschauung against hierarchical thinking. According to the definition, cyborg figure is a hybrid post-human body that is untouched by polar dichotomies and is capable of 'becoming' animal or machine. Interestingly enough, since autistic people who - on grounds of their supposedly intellectual 'disability' - have long been exiled from the so-called normal society, started to author autobiographies, their projected self-image as a cyborg figure has attracted ample attention: bodies sharing close affinities with animals, robots, nature, and environment.
Educational Neuroscience for Literacy Teachers
Bridging the world of reading instruction and applied cognitive neuroscience, this book presents research-backed reading instructional methods and explains how they can be understood through the lens of brain processes.Dispelling myths about neuroscience, Spence and Mitra explore how brain-based research informs literacy research in a way that is clear and accessible to pre-service teachers. Chapters address theories of reading, social-emotional learning, phonological processes, embodiment, multilingualism, reading comprehension, and more. Featuring examples of instruction and consistent "Did you know?" and "Food for thought" sections, readers will come away with a greater understanding of the reading brain and how neuroscience can facilitate effective instruction.Delving into the extent to which neuroscience can underpin reading research, this text is ideal for pre-service teachers, educators, and students in the fields of language arts and literacy, as well as cognitive neuroscience.
