Latin
This Latin textbook introduces students to the fundamentals of Latin grammar, syntax, and morphology; it is accompanied by Volume II of the text, which serves to complete the entire system of Latin grammar. The text is complete with full grammatical explanations, which are reinforced throughout with drills, sentence translation and composition, and readings in the original language.
Biblical Aramaic for Biblical Interpreters
This textbook, Biblical Aramaic for Biblical Interpreters, extends learning patterns already established through a student's study of Biblical Hebrew and cuts an efficient path toward the interpretation of Biblical Aramaic Scripture. It employs a fresh approach that significantly facilitates learning Biblical Aramaic vocabulary and grammar. The motivating goal throughout is to enable interpreting biblical passages written in Biblical Aramaic, namely, Genesis 31:47, Jeremiah 10:11, Ezra 4:8-6:18 and 7:12-26, and Daniel 2:4b-7:28. Review of fundamental concepts like the alphabet, Masoretic vowel pointing, prose cantillation marks, and the use of scholarly printed editions of the biblical text is unnecessary, because this knowledge carries over directly from previous biblical language study. Instead, review of Biblical Hebrew grammar is part and parcel of the comparative method of this book. Whenever this book places Biblical Hebrew and Biblical Aramaic words and concepts side-by-side for comparison, the arrangement is generally Biblical Hebrew on the left (review material) and Biblical Aramaic on the right (new information).

The Systemic View as a Basis for Philological Thought
The authors advocate for innovative, systemicity-based ideas in philology. They reveal explanatory aspects of linguistic typology, model a concept sphere as a complex linguistic object, construct a causal typology of literary texts, and provide systemic analysis of poetic speech.

Latin for Kids
This book teaches Latin the traditional way - in a highly non-traditional presentation. Every page is bursting with color and overflowing with funny illustrations, silly humor, surprise captions, and recurring Latin-speaking animal characters and Roman statues. The book is for kids, but... - if you are a college student terrified of Latin, grab this book, and relax. You won't be lost in an endless desert of conjugation charts and exclusions from exclusions... The dialogues will not feature boring Roman farmers, soldiers, or sailors - yawn! I'll keep you smiling at a lazy Roman school kid, his nasty teacher, a unicorn, a princess, and some barbarians about to sack Rome - our kind of environment! No pain figuring out long and short syllables - I mark stress in all more-than-two-syllable words, so give it a try! - if you are a grownup curious - for whatever reason - about Latin, grab the book! It's your soft landing - be it in Ancient Rome, or at a Latin mass! Worth trying. Full disclosure: I have a stake in this game. I wrote this book to teach Latin to my 9-year-old son. I don't think he'll grow up a scholar like me, but here are the reasons why I want my kid, you, and your kids to know at least some Latin: 1. Up to 90% of multi-syllable words in English are of Latin origin. Latin will make our kids comfortable with long/important/scary words. They won't bat an eyelash when they hear 'ostentatious' or 'edifice.' Once they have learned the Latin verb 'scire' - 'to know, ' they won't make mistakes spelling 'science'! 2. French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese - these are poor relatives of Latin. If you have some basic knowledge of Latin, all Romance languages are a piece of cake. In this book I offer quite a bit of spoken Latin - for play. Kids may enjoy playing 'Ancient Rome, ' or mess with a language nobody around them understands. But our real goal is not Latin conversation. The real goal is fully mobilizing our passive knowledge of Latin: - the ability to recognize and understand Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes in English words of Latin origin; - the ability to competently use terms of Latin origin in fields such as law, politics, medicine, science, and more; - the ability to understand and correctly use Latin sayings, historical quotes, and mottos - as elements of European cultural heritage. Material: Introduction to Latin Grammar - noun and adjective declension: Nominative, Genitive, Dative, Accusative, Ablative and Vocative cases - singular and plural in all five declensions; - adjectives - comparative and superlative degrees; - pronouns - most widely used forms; - use of cases with common prepositions (in, a/ab, ad, e/ex, inter, cum, per, and more); - verb conjugations in Indicative Present, Past Perfect, Past Imperfect, and Indicative Future; - Imperative Mood; - Past Participle; - Accusativus cum Infinitivo; - Instrumental Ablative Case; - conjugation of frequently used irregular verbs. All grammatical explanations are richly illustrated with level-appropriate Latin sayings and proverbs and accompanied with conversational exercises. Vocabulary development - Whenever we learn new Latin words, I list modern English words related to our Latin vocabulary. The book offers nine collections of terms (with Latin etymology) from Law, Science, Medicine, Government and Civics, and more. Practice sections include translation from English to Latin and 2-3 engaging kid-friendly texts for reading: Familia Romana, Schola, famous mottos and sayings, and Church Latin texts, such as the Lord's Prayer, Glory Be, Adeste Fideles, and a few bits from the Latin Mass.

Martial
In this age of the sound bite, what sort of author could be more relevant than a master of the epigram? Martial, the most influential epigrammatist of classical antiquity, was just such a virtuoso of the form, but despite his pertinence to today's culture, his work has been largely neglected in contemporary scholarship. Arguing that Martial is a major author who deserves more sustained attention, William Fitzgerald provides an insightful tour of his works, shedding new and much-needed light on the Roman poet's world-and how it might speak to our own. Writing in the late first century CE-when the epigram was firmly embedded in the social life of the Roman elite-Martial published his poems in a series of books that were widely read and enjoyed. Exploring what it means to read such a collection of epigrams, Fitzgerald examines the paradoxical relationship between the self-enclosed epigram and the book of poems that is more than the sum of its parts. And he goes on to show how Martial, by imagining these books being displayed in shops and shipped across the empire to admiring readers, prophetically behaved like a modern author. Chock-full of epigrams itself-in both Latin and English versions-Fitzgerald's study will delight classicists, literary scholars, and anyone who appreciates an ingenious witticism.

The Demon was deemed so scandalous at the time it was written that it was first published in Russia only in 1856 - and then only in a handful of copies for the royal family! It tells of a beautiful Georgian princess, Tamara, who awakens long-forgotten feelings of love in a Demon when he sees her dancing on the eve of her wedding. After the untimely death of her would-be husband, Tamara enters a convent, but a voice continues to tempt her. At last the Demon appears to her, to profess his love... and Tamara's soul hangs in the balance...A Hero of Our Time is many things at once: a travelogue documenting the astounding natural beauty of the Caucasus and the spirit of its many peoples; an adventure novel with everything from kidnappings to duels; a catalogue of tragic romantic encounters; a novel of (bad) manners; and a disturbing psychological study of its infamous anti-hero, Pechorin, the first (alongside Pushkin's Evgeny Onegin) of many deeply conflicted - if not demonic - figures in Russian literature. As Lermontov himself makes clear, the idea that Pechorin is "heroic" is to be taken with a great deal of irony!Mirroring each other in many ways, these two works are productively read together, with The Demonproviding a fantastical poetic overture to the realist prose of A Hero of Our Time. Together, they make for captivating reading.Book 4 in the "Reading Russian" series, this edition provides the original text and facing English translation, together with all the vocabulary notes and reference tables you need to make sense of the original. Designed to help students of Russian begin to enjoy real Russian literature in the original without constantly reaching for a dictionary, this parallel-text edition features a new translation made specifically for this purpose, as well as detailed Russian vocabulary notes, including all the important forms you need (especially aspectual pairs and conjugation types for all verbs). The original Russian text is marked for stress, but is otherwise unedited and unsimplified.
Church Latin for the Third Millennium
Church Latin for the Third Millennium is a 10-lesson step-by-step introduction to Church Latin. The focus is on developing fluency in reading, and on easily recognizing Latin grammatical forms in Vulgata, Latin prayers, hymns, the Latin Mass, and other Church Latin texts. It is a self-study textbook for an absolute beginner. No dictionary or supplemental materials are needed. This book is streamlined in its presentation of Latin grammar. It focuses only on features that appear consistently in Church Latin. The book is richly illustrated to make your learning experience more interesting than the laborious ploughing through black-and-white small type that we have all come to expect from a traditional Latin textbook. It is also designed for easy visual reference and intuitive learning. For example, all Latin cases are color-coded and every instance of each case is underlined with its own color throughout the book to help you memorize case endings through visual recognition. We start with the utmost basics. You will gradually build your vocabulary and command of grammar to arrive at a point where you have a good picture of the Latin grammatical system, and enough skill to venture further reading on your own, with a dictionary or a parallel text. Methodologically, this textbook is based entirely on reading practice. Wherever new grammatical material or vocabulary is introduced, its use is demonstrated through an assortment of short passages from the Vulgata, prayers, quotes from Church fathers, and other sources. All case forms are identified with color assigned to each case, and all verbal forms are identified in the glossaries following each reading passage. At the end of each lesson 2 or 3 longer reading texts are provided, again with color-coding, glossaries, and English translations. When introducing grammar, this textbook comments on differences between Classical Latin and the Latin of the Vulgata. To promote understanding and appreciation of the style of early Christian sources, I list frequently used words together with their synonyms or antonyms in special insets. In addition, a lot of vocabulary is presented in pictorial format, through illustrations portraying gospel scenes with captions and speech. The Latin texts in these pictorial sections come directly from the Vulgata, and are presented without translation - so you can figure them out on your own!

Reading Gogol’s Petersburg Tales in Russian
A pure delight to read, the four major "Petersburg Tales" of Nikolai Gogol - strange and fantastical, ludicrously absurd, by turns harrowing and hilarious - are among the foundational texts of modern Russian literature. In this volume designed specifically for Russian learners, "The Overcoat," "The Nose," "Diary of a Madman," and "Nevsky Prospekt" are presented in their entirety, in the original Russian and in a facing English translation, together with all the vocabulary notes and reference tables you need to make sense of the original. Photographs of important sites will help orient you in Gogol's Petersburg. In "The Overcoat," a petty copy clerk scrimps and saves to purchase a new overcoat; once acquired, it fills his life with a dubious sort of meaning... until tragedy strikes. In "The Nose," a conceited official wakes up one morning to find an empty, flat spot where his nose used to be! Worse yet, when he finally tracks down his runaway nose, he finds it praying in church, and - O horror! - wearing a uniform of a rank higher than his own! In "Diary of a Madman," a clerk obsessed with his boss's daughter tries to find the answers he seeks by intercepting her dog's correspondence, as he gradually loses all touch with reality. Finally, in "Nevsky Prospekt," two friends follow two different women down the famous Petersburg boulevard - with radically divergent consequences.

Like Book 1, it is richly illustrated with Soviet propaganda posters whose slogans highlight each lesson's grammar. It is supplemented with a learner's Russian-English dictionary, an answer key, and useful grammar tables for reference. Russian, Book 3
This is the revised edition of Book 3 in a series of Russian language textbooks that began with Russian Through Propaganda (Books 1 and 2). This volume shifts its attention from the Soviet era to the Imperial era, illustrating its discussions of intermediate grammar with paintings depicting Russian history and culture. Classical poems by the likes of Pushkin and Lermontov provide examples of the grammar, which includes such topics as advanced aspect, prefixed verbs of motion, and deverbal forms - all of which are essential for reading real Russian literature. The book culminates with a reading selection that includes Pushkin's "The Bronze Horseman," two short stories by Chekhov ("Death of a Clerk" and "A Little Joke"), and one by Tolstoy ("Alyosha the Pot") - all of them extensively glossed to allow students to begin reading real literature without constantly using a dictionary. This series, which is geared toward ambitious students who wish to learn Russian culture along with the language, continues with Book 4. For more information, see www.russianthroughpropaganda.com.

Interlinear English / Hebrew in the Four Gospels
I wrote this Book with the purpose of awakening the desire in the minds of all Christians believers to learn the language our Lord Jesus Christ spoke while He was here on this earth. With the exceptions of the Aramaic, Jesus Christ gave us the Word of His Gospel in the Hebrew and a few words in the Aramaic. The Bible was originally written in Greek by the Apostles in the first century. Later, Franz Delitzsch compiled the Hebrew version translating it from the original Greek. His work is known as "The Textus Receptus" in Greek. Most of the New Testament Books as we know them were written originally in the Greek by the Evangelists, even though, there are other versions like the Syriac. But I can imagine for the Gospel writers, while writing in Greek, Jesus Christ's beautiful and blessed Words still were reverberating in their minds in the original Hebrew and the Aramaic languages. First Peter 1:1-2 "Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ. v2) To the pilgrims of the dispersion..... "James 1:1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad." (The Diaspora, "Hannefotzeem)." The work of this Book is dedicated to the many Jewish people who are dispersed throughout the world, and to the many who are beginning to know their ancestor's roots.

Russian Through Propaganda, Book 1
This is a revised edition of the first volume of the Russian Through Propaganda series, now with free video lessons via YouTube. This new series of Russian textbooks provides a rigorous but rewarding approach to the language. It assumes no prior knowledge of Russian, and is intended for ambitious beginners, or more advanced students seeking a highly structured review of the language. It assumes that its readers are interested in long-term mastery of the language, within the rich historical, cultural, and literary contexts that often draw students to Russian in the first place. It therefore takes the time to explain challenging grammar topics in depth, striving to provide the full picture as clearly as possible. It is richly illustrated with Soviet-era propaganda posters, whose slogans serve as examples of each lesson's grammar. It is structured as a series of 50 daily lessons, which build upon one another and give a clear sense of progress. It is the equivalent of a semester of intensive college-level study of Russian. Visit www.russianthroughpropaganda.com for more information and to access video lessons.
