The Canvas and Other Stories
The Canvas and Other Stories by Salomea Perl is a bilingual Yiddish-English text featuring the only known stories Perl wrote and published in the various Yiddish newspapers of her time. Uncovered after two years of research and translated by Ruth Murphy, the book presents the original Yiddish text and English translation in a side-by-side format. Murphy's translations present Perl's voice to English readers, while Perl's rich, authentic Yiddish brings readers back to the Jewish, Yiddish-speaking streets of turn-of-the-century Poland. The insightful introduction by Dr. Justin Cammy gives the historical background of both the text and its author. The work of Salomea Perl, an author completely unknown until these translations, is an important addition to ongoing discovery of female Yiddish writers.Salomea Perl (1869-1916) was born in the town of Lomża (now Poland) and raised in the larger city of Lublin. After completing studies at the University of Geneva, she settled in Warsaw. Her Yiddish first stories were published n Yontev Bletlekh, the self-proclaimed radical magazine published by Y. L. Peretz, starting in 1895. Her seventh and final known Yiddish work was published in 1910."The publication here of all seven known stories by Salomea Perl is not only important because it marks the rediscovery of a forgotten Yiddish writer. It also allows us to consider her unsentimental portraits of a Jewish world in transition. Her stories reveal deep class divisions and the prevalence of Jewish poverty. She investigates how the religious values that guided everyday life often lacked compassion for lived experience. Perl explores the social and cultural ruptures caused by internal migration from small towns to big cities, and new manifestations of secular Jewish identity associated with modern life."At the same time, for every frayed relationship between a husband and wife or a daughter shunning her father, Perl's fiction also reveals unassuming acts of self-sacrifice and modesty. For every abandonment of religious obligation in favor of the seductions of the secular-modern world there remain those who are content to carry on lives of relative simplicity."From the Introduction by Justin Cammy, Associate Professor of Jewish Studies and Comparative Literature at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts

A Handbook Of The Cornish Language
Step into Cornwall's living past with Henry Jenner's authoritative handbook of the Cornish tongue. Language lives in its people. As a Cornish language handbook and Celtic language guide, Jenner balances practical instruction with a lucid account of language history and literature, giving beginners a practical language learners resource and offering scholars a concise historical linguistics reference. Grammar and usage stand beside notes on local speech, folklore and surviving texts, so the work reads both as a classroom companion and as a portrait of a threatened tongue's cultural life. Jenner writes with evident respect for his sources; the tone is direct yet admiring, making technical points accessible without losing the texture of songs, place-names and old tales. The result is an approachable study that serves everyday learners and readers drawn by Cornwall's distinctive voice. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. Rooted in the intellectual life of nineteenth century Cornwall, Jenner's study helped shape the early Cornish language revival and continues to inform endangered languages study. Its combination of careful description and cultural commentary gives it lasting literary and historical significance; the handbook is both evidence of a local renaissance and a record of the language's surviving literature and forms. Casual readers will be drawn to its human detail, anecdotes and clear explanations, while classic literature collectors, students and academic researchers will value it as an academic research tool and a deserving addition to any celtic studies collection and to the corpus of Henry Jenner works. Whether used as a language learners resource or held as part of Cornish cultural heritage, the volume celebrates a living past and invites new readers to listen, learn and take part in its continuing story.
Handbook Of Latin Inscriptions
Read the language carved by Rome. Language revealed in enduring stones. Handbook Of Latin Inscriptions offers a focused anthology of inscriptions that illuminate the history of the Latin language, binding primary texts and clear annotation into a compact classical language reference. As a Latin inscription anthology it presents inscriptions as living records: brief, direct lines of speech that show vocabulary, orthography and phrasing in their social context. The book gathers ancient Roman texts with explanatory notes, making it both a practical Latin epigraphy collection and an approachable academic Latin resource for students of classics and for anyone drawn to ancient Rome scholarship. Its selections, organised to highlight linguistic change, serve as a Latin literature guide and a Roman archaeology resource that links carved words to material life, helping readers trace how usage shifted in public and private settings. Accessible editorial commentary explains context and meaning without unnecessary theory, so newcomers can follow the evidence while scholars find rigorous prompts for further enquiry. Careful organisation and authentic presentation make the volume both a reliable academic Latin resource and a satisfying acquisition for classic-literature collectors and libraries, and it is useful to research in Roman civilization studies. The volume's literary and historical significance lies in its role as direct primary-source evidence: inscriptions preserve usages seldom recorded in formal literature and so illuminate everyday speech and social practice. Editorial clarity and judicious commentary make complex linguistic shifts legible without jargon, creating a classical studies companion equally at home on a student's desk or a collector's shelf. It rewards both close study and casual browsing: a curious reader can follow singular examples at leisure, while experienced students use the inscriptions as comparative evidence in teaching and research. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
A Key To Exercises On Latin Syntax, Adapted To Zumpt’S Grammar; To Which Are Added Extracts From The Writings Of Muretus
Essential for serious students and curious readers alike: a rigorous but accessible key to Latin syntax. Clear exercises build lasting skill. John Kenrick's A Key to Exercises on Latin Syntax, adapted to Zumpt's Grammar and enriched with extracts from Muretus, clarifies complex rules through repeated, practical application. As a key, it frames targeted Latin grammar exercises alongside concise Latin translation passages so learners can test understanding and deepen stylistic sense. This classical language workbook bridges reference and practice: it supports academic Latin instruction while remaining invaluable to students learning Latin independently, tutors refining coursework, and families assembling a homeschool Latin curriculum. Its exercises encourage attentive parsing, exact rendering and familiarity with idiom; qualities that make Latin language study feel purposeful rather than merely theoretical. Its historical and literary significance is plain: a nineteenth century Latin artefact that preserves a mode of classical education and the tastes of its era; the Muretus extracts collection included here shows the stylistic standards that guided translation and composition in that tradition. As a classical education resource, the volume reintroduces the discipline of close grammatical reading and rewards methodical revision. Teachers and independent learners alike will value the keyed exercises as a practical means to rehearse syntax and approach original texts with confidence. Collectors prize not only the work's utility but its provenance within nineteenth century Latin pedagogy; as a Zumpt grammar companion it remains a touchstone for historical study and contemporary Latin language study. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure. Casual readers will find crisp, accessible passages that reward close reading, while classic-literature collectors and academic readers will prize this edition for its fidelity to period pedagogy and its practical utility in contemporary study.

Aelfrics Grammatik Und Glossar
Aelfrics Grammatik Und Glossar reconnects readers with a vanished tongue. A landmark of linguistic care. Part grammar and part glossary, the material attributed to Aelfric of Eynsham lays out paradigms and glosses that illuminate Old English usage. It reads as both an Old English grammar guide and a practical medieval language reference, mapping Anglo-Saxon vocabulary against the Latin notation that medieval scholars used. Casual readers drawn to early medieval literature or the Beowulf-era language will find accessible passages; philology students and specialists will value its precise witness for historical linguistics study and as a language evolution resource. Surviving early English glossaries are rare, and the evidence here gives fresh purchase on morphology, word-formation and classroom practice in 10th century England. With scholarly fidelity and readable presentation, this volume deserves a place in any academic linguistics collection or on a curated medieval studies reference shelf. Librarians, lecturers and independent researchers will find it indispensable for classroom teaching, close reading and comparative work. Its compact witness to Anglo-Saxon practice rewards repeated consultation. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. Beyond its appeal to collectors, the book is historically significant: Aelfric's pedagogical approach furnishes a rare bridge between classical grammatical tradition and vernacular instruction, showing how language was taught, recorded and adapted across 10th century England. For readers tracing the arc from Old English to modern forms, it is direct evidence; for admirers of classic literature it provides a tangible link to the linguistic world in which Beowulf and its companions were composed. Whether used as an accessible reference or added to a discerning shelf of philological works, this edition combines cultural weight with modern readability. Its careful notes and glossary entries make it an instructive companion for anyone curious about philology and linguistic history.

A Grammar Of The Latin Language From Plautus To Suetonius Part 1 Containing
Discover the grammar that explains how Latin spoke and changed between Plautus and Suetonius. Essential for students of classics. Henry John Roby's A Grammar of the Latin Language From Plautus to Suetonius, Part 1 is a rigorous, systematically arranged latin grammar reference that examines phonology, inflection and derivation as used in the ancient Roman language. Written as both a classical language textbook and a historical linguistics guide, the volume presents Book I on sounds, Book II on inflexions and Book III on word-formation, with appendices to aid comparative work and focused study. Roby's close readings show sound-change in action and set out latin inflection rules with clarity; his discussion of latin word formation traces derivations that recur across poetry and prose. Designed for clarity as much as scholarship, it functions equally well as classroom material, a self-study companion and a practical reference for translators, while offering the analytical depth expected by researchers. Methodologically significant, the work maps shifts in usage across genres and periods, making it a valuable resource for ancient literature studies and for anyone treating Latin as a living, changing tongue. As a comprehensive latin grammar it supports comparative philology, helps contextualise texts from the republican stage through the Roman Empire era, and remains a trusted language scholars resource for tracing morphology and phonetics across authors. Casual readers exploring original texts will find accessible explanations; students of classics will gain a structured path through forms and functions; collectors of classical scholarship will consider the volume an essential addition to a latin language collection. The book's philological method rewards close reading and comparative research, providing a bridge between classroom grammar and the scholar's toolkit. Its examples are suitable for seminar discussion, translation practice and advanced study, so it appeals equally to conscientious beginners and to seasoned researchers. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure.

Its design supports learners and lovers alike: serious students will find a rigorous companion for language work, while casual readers encounter direct, authoritative texts that reward curiosity rather than specialism. Teachers and independent learners have found it a reliable language learning resource and a welcoming introduction to Greek mythology stories; it also reads well aloud, a reminder that these ancient Greece texts were composed for performance and public life. Book I treats sounds with close latin sounds analysis; Book II sets out inflexions with latin inflections explained in comparative terms; Book III examines ancient word-formation and appended material that illuminates derivation and compounding. A Copious Latin Grammar (Volume I) Translated From The German With Alterations, Notes And Additions (Volume I)
A handbook that defined nineteenth-century Latin study. Clear, rigorous, and elegantly delivered. George Walker's A Copious Latin Grammar (Volume I), translated from the German with alterations, notes and additions, combines systematic explanation with the observational cast of Victorian era scholarship. Part practical manual, part comparative grammar resource, it organises paradigms and argument so that learners move from form to meaning with uncommon clarity. As a Latin grammar textbook and classical language reference it balances prescriptive guidance with lucid examples of Latin syntax and usage; students of classics and advanced Latin learners find here both immediate instruction and material for deeper historical linguistics study. The translator's alterations and notes create a bridge between continental philology and English-speaking instruction, so readers encounter the German analytical tradition alongside practical guidance shaped for Anglophone learners. Readable enough for a curious amateur, robust enough for a tutor. Helpful for Latin language instruction at many levels. The volume functions as a comprehensive Latin guide for classroom use, private tuition or a homeschool Latin curriculum, and it rewards those seeking a rigorous study of syntax and nuance. Walker's notes and alterations show engagement with contemporary German scholarship, making the work valuable for comparative study and for scholars tracing the development of nineteenth century education in classical subjects. Appeals to casual readers and classic-literature collectors, offering both reference utility and a window into a scholarly era. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. For the casual reader the volume offers rewarding passages of close analysis; for the collector it represents a tangible slice of Victorian-era scholarship and nineteenth-century education, an object of provenance and quiet admiration. Ideal for teachers designing curricula, scholars comparing grammars across languages, exam candidates sharpening parsing skills, and anyone curious about the techniques of nineteenth-century education, this edition dovetails practical instruction with historical perspective.
A Greek Reader
A Greek Reader opens a direct doorway to the voices of antiquity. A concise, usable student companion. H. D. Rouse's arrangement gathers accessible passages from classical era literature and presents them as a practical Greek language reader designed for graded study. The selections are authentic ancient Greek texts presented with an editorial eye for usability: graded passages, succinct introductions, and frequent prompts that encourage active work rather than passive reading. Yiddish
The most widely spoken Jewish language on the eve of the Holocaust, Yiddish continues to play a significant role in Jewish life today, from Hasidim for whom it is a language of daily life to avant-garde performers, political activists, and LGBTQ writers turning to Yiddish for inspiration. Yiddish: Biography of a Language presents the story of this centuries-old language, the defining vernacular of Ashkenazi Jews, from its origins to the present. Jeffrey Shandler tells the multifaceted history of Yiddish in the form of a biographical profile, revealing surprising insights through a series of thematic chapters. He addresses key aspects of Yiddish as the language of a diasporic population, whose speakers have always used more than one language. As the vernacular of a marginalized minority, Yiddish has often been held in low regard compared to other languages, and its legitimacy as a language has been questioned. But some devoted Yiddish speakers have championed the language as embodying the essence of Jewish culture and a defining feature of a Jewish national identity. Despite predictions of the demise of Yiddish-dating back well before half of its speakers were murdered during the Holocaust-the language leads a vibrant, evolving life to this day.

The Tiberian Pronunciation Tradition of Biblical Hebrew, Volume 1
These volumes represent the highest level of scholarship on what is arguably the most important tradition of Biblical Hebrew. Written by the leading scholar of the Tiberian Masoretic tradition, they offer a wealth of new data and revised analysis, and constitute a considerable advance on existing published scholarship. It should stand alongside Israel Yeivin's 'The Tiberian Masorah' as an essential handbook for scholars of Biblical Hebrew, and will remain an indispensable reference work for decades to come.-Dr. Benjamin Outhwaite, Director of the Taylor-Schechter Genizah Research Unit, Cambridge University LibraryThe form of Biblical Hebrew that is presented in printed editions, with vocalization and accent signs, has its origin in medieval manuscripts of the Bible. The vocalization and accent signs are notation systems that were created in Tiberias in the early Islamic period by scholars known as the Tiberian Masoretes, but the oral tradition they represent has roots in antiquity. The grammatical textbooks and reference grammars of Biblical Hebrew in use today are heirs to centuries of tradition of grammatical works on Biblical Hebrew in Europe. The paradox is that this European tradition of Biblical Hebrew grammar did not have direct access to the way the Tiberian Masoretes were pronouncing Biblical Hebrew. In the last few decades, research of manuscript sources from the medieval Middle East has made it possible to reconstruct with considerable accuracy the pronunciation of the Tiberian Masoretes, which has come to be known as the 'Tiberian pronunciation tradition'. This book presents the current state of knowledge of the Tiberian pronunciation tradition of Biblical Hebrew and a full edition of one of the key medieval sources, Hidāyat al-Qāriʾ 'The Guide for the Reader', by ʾAbū al-Faraj Hārūn. It is hoped that the book will help to break the mould of current grammatical descriptions of Biblical Hebrew and form a bridge between modern traditions of grammar and the school of the Masoretes of Tiberias.Links and QR codes in the book allow readers to listen to an oral performance of samples of the reconstructed Tiberian pronunciation by Alex Foreman. This is the first time Biblical Hebrew has been recited with the Tiberian pronunciation for a millennium. Advances in Formal Slavic Linguistics 2016
Advances in Formal Slavic Linguistics 2016 initiates a new series of collective volumes on formal Slavic linguistics. It presents a selection of high quality papers authored by young and senior linguists from around the world and contains both empirically oriented work, underpinned by up-to-date experimental methods, as well as more theoretically grounded contributions. The volume covers all major linguistic areas, including morphosyntax, semantics, pragmatics, phonology, and their mutual interfaces. The particular topics discussed include argument structure, word order, case, agreement, tense, aspect, clausal left periphery, or segmental phonology. The topical breadth and analytical depth of the contributions reflect the vitality of the field of formal Slavic linguistics and prove its relevance to the global linguistic endeavour. Early versions of the papers included in this volume were presented at the conference on Formal Description of Slavic Languages 12 or at the satellite Worksh This work was published by Saint Philip Street Press pursuant to a Creative Commons license permitting commercial use. The Mehweb Language
This book is an investigation into the grammar of Mehweb (Dargwa, East Caucasian also known as Nakh-Daghestanian) based on several years of team fieldwork. Mehweb is spoken in one village community in Daghestan, Russia, with a population of some 800 people, In many ways, Mehweb is a typical East Caucasian language: it has a rich inventory of consonants; an extensive system of spatial forms in nouns and converbs and volitional forms in verbs; pervasive gender-number agreement; and ergative alignment in case marking and in gender agreement. It is also a typical language of the Dargwa branch, with symmetrical verb inflection in the imperfective and perfective paradigm and extensive use of spatial encoding for experiencers. Although Mehweb is clearly close to the northern varieties of Dargwa, it has been long isolated from the main body of Dargwa varieties by speakers of Avar and Lak.
