Applied Welsh
Simplifies Welsh grammar for intermediate and advanced learners using clear color-coding, bridging the gap between formal rules and informal usage.Self-study grammar reference book for Intermediate/Advanced learners of Welsh. Aimed at learners who often find formal grammar books difficult to follow because of the complicated terminology, it makes everything clear at a glance with the same ingenious, easy-to-understand colour-coding as the author's extremely popular D.I.Y. Welsh. The book looks into why the patterns of Welsh differ so significantly in places from English and many other European languages, focusing on the structures in standard written Welsh, which has more consistent patterns than informal spoken Welsh. While primarily intended for learners moving on from D.I.Y. Welsh, the book will also be useful for fluent or native Welsh speakers who lack confidence when it comes to formal grammar.
Baroque Latinity
This volume addresses the idea of the Baroque in European literature in Latin. With contributions by scholars from various disciplines and countries, and by looking at a range of texts from across Europe, the volume offers case studies to deepen scholarly understanding of this important literary phenomenon and inspire future research. A key aim of the volume is to address the distinctiveness of these texts by interrogating the usefulness and specificity of the term 'Baroque', especially in relation to the classical rules it transgresses to produce effects of grandeur, richness, and exuberance in a range of secular and sacred arts (e.g. music, architecture, painting), as well as various forms of literature (e.g. prose, poetry, drama). The contributors consider how and why Latin writing mutated from earlier humanist paradigms, thus exploring how ideas of 'early modern' and 'Baroque' are related, and examine the interplay of the theory and practice of the 'Baroque', including its debts to and deviations from ancient models, and its limits and limitations.
Ermolao Barbaro's on Celibacy 3 and 4 and on the Duty of the Ambassador
This book offers the first annotated translation into English of two works of the eminent Venetian humanist, Ermolao Barbaro (1454-93). Books 3 and 4 of On Celibacy seek to justify a contemplative existence at a far remove from the active life and career-path expected of a figure of Barbaro's standing within the Venetian patriciate; Books 1 and 2 of On Celibacy are presented in the companion-piece to this second volume. The second work presented here is Barbaro's short treatise On the Duty of Ambassador (1488): based on Barbaro's own practical experience as a Venetian envoy abroad, this treatise outlines the conduct expected of the dedicated career diplomat. Viewed against each other, Barbaro's On Celibacy and On the Duty of the Ambassador offer contrasting perspectives on the wider 15th-century debate about the claims of the reflective as opposed to the active life - a debate that extends all the way back to Greco-Roman antiquity. In On Celibacy the young Barbaro is committed to a life that proudly renounces civic engagement in the name of self-discovery and inner fulfilment. Yet a different Barbaro asserts himself in On the Duty of the Ambassador: he now presents himself as a committed public servant in a work that is ahead if its time in theorizing the nature of 'modern' Renaissance diplomacy. On a personal level, these two works capture the profound dichotomy in Barbaro's life between his humanist devotion to scholarship on the one hand and, on the other, his call of duty to the Republic of Venice.
Ermolao Barbaro's on Celibacy 1 and 2
This volume offers the first annotated English translation of the first two books of On Celibacy(1473) by the eminent Venetian humanist Ermolao Barbaro (1454-93); Books 3 and 4 of On Celibacy are presented, along with Barbaro's On the Duty of the Ambassador, in the companion piece to this first volume. Setting out the historical context that crucially conditions Barbaro's advocacy of the celibate life in Books 1 and 2, the introduction examines how On Celibacyseeks to justify a contemplative existence that rejects the career path expected of a figure of Barbaro's standing within the Venetian patrician class. Beyond setting out the essential facts of Ermolao Barbaro's life-story, Gareth Williams discusses how On Celibacy is set in counterpoise to the treatise On Marriage (1415) that was composed by Ermolao's eminent grandfather, Francesco Barbaro. If the latter's treatise was vitally concerned with the institution of marriage as a key factor in the safeguarding of family succession and the stability of patriciate participation in government at Venice, On Celibacy presents an alternative ideal whereby the celibate can proudly renounce civic life in the name of self-discovery and the pursuit of wisdom, his abilities simply unsuited to the rigors of civic life. On Celibacyis thus implicated in a much wider 15th-century debate about the claims of the contemplative as opposed to the active life - a debate that extends all the way back to Graeco-Roman antiquity.

OCR Anthology for Latin AS and A Level Shorter Verse Authors
This is the OCR-endorsed edition covering the Latin AS and A-Level (Group 1) prescription for examinations in 2026-28 of Tibullus I.2, I.5, II.4 and the the A-Level (Group 2) prescription for examinations in 2027-28 of Ovid's Metamorphoses VII and Lucretius' de rerum natura I, giving full Latin text, commentary and vocabulary, with a detailed introduction that also covers the prescribed material to be read in English for A Level. The three poets contained in this volume present a wide range of Latin verse from the end of the republic and the early empire. There is some challenging philosophical poetry on the world in which we live, explaining and exploring the atomic nature of matter and seeing the wonderful ways in which nature works, there is Ovid's wonderfully inventive and dramatic account of the sorceress Medea and her doomed love for the Argonaut Jason, and there are three poignant love-poems by the poet Tibullus. These three writers in their different ways manage to use Latin verse to convey a picture of the world which is both strange and familiar: Lucretius anticipates much of classical Physics, Ovid is the ancient world's magic realist before the term was coined, and Tibullus offers us a case-study in heartbreak which rings as true today as it did in ancient times. Johann Buxtorf, Impresario of Hebrew and Jewish Books
Johann Buxtorf (1564-1629) pursued the study of Hebrew and Aramaic and the writings and rituals of Jewish tradition through a long and productive life as a professor at the University of Basel and an impresario of Jewish texts. The focus of this work is on Buxtorf's scholarly practices -- for example, the ways in which he read and made excerpts from a wide variety of Jewish texts, recycled them in his polemical Juden schul (1603), a treatise on the customs and ceremonies of Ashkenazic Jews, and surveyed them in pioneering if incomplete bibliographies. Using a wide variety of unpublished sources, including letters to Buxtorf from Jewish print professionals, this study follows him into the Basel printing houses that produced books in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Yiddish, and reconstructs how he worked there as both an editor and a censor -- even rewriting certain Jewish prayers to eliminate anti-Christian sentiments. Buxtorf took a special interest in the textual history of the Hebrew Bible: he argued that the vowel points and accents had entered its text at a very early stage. This study shows that Buxtorf developed his views in dialogue -- and debate -- with both Jewish and Christian scholars. He often expressed contempt for both the Jews whose texts he read and those whom he occasionally met in Basel, Frankfurt, or elsewhere, yet his passion for Jewish literature of every kind never faltered.
Roger Ascham's Themata Theologica
Roger Ascham is often classified as 'a great mid-Tudor humanist' and he is perhaps best known for his role as tutor to Elizabeth I. His most famous works, The Scholemaster and Toxophilus, have been extensively quarried and anthologised in studies on prose style and English humanism. By contrast, his Neo-Latin works that engaged with theology and key Reformation concerns have languished in the shadows of modern scholarship. Ascham's Themata Theologica ('Theological Topics') is one of these, and its content has the potential to open up many an investigative avenue into the intellectual and religious culture of the sixteenth century. This is the first volume to offer a corresponding English translation. The Themata can be dated to the early to mid- 1540s, and was composed by Ascham while still at Cambridge University and serving as a senior fellow at St John's College. The work mainly comprises a compendium of relatively short commentaries on Scriptural verses (both Old and New Testament), many of which developed into expositions on difficult philosophical concepts, such as the notion of felix culpa (literally, 'happy fault') and some of the most intractable theological questions of the day, including the nature of sin, adiaphora ('matters of indifference'), justification and free will. This little-known text offers a rare opportunity to trace the course of Ascham's own religious maturation, but also offers fresh insights into the confessional climate at Cambridge University during one of the most turbulent periods of the Reformation in England.

The Latin Verse of Martin Luther
Martin Luther wrote a number of Latin poems, mostly using traditional classical metres, over the course of his career. He used them to praise friends, insult adversaries and express his faith in times of distress. Up until now, Luther's Neo-Latin poetry has largely fallen through the disciplinary cracks. Literary scholars have traditionally paid more attention to the Latin verse of more celebrated humanist poets such as Petrarch. Students of the Reformation have concentrated far more often on Luther's prose and his famous German hymns than on his Latin poems. Even scholars who are familiar with Luther's Neo-Latin poetry have dismissed it as of only marginal significance. As this book demonstrates, Luther's Latin verses are valuable cultural products that amply reward scholarly reconsideration. Springer's volume is the first to provide English translations of all of them. It also includes extensive introductions and line-by-line annotations for each of the poems, situating them within their literary traditions and contemporary contexts. As such, it enables readers to see that far from being a reformer who more or less repudiated the Classics, or someone who merely dabbled in them, Luther was a confident, even bold, Latin poet, who was serious about working out his own distinctive synthesis between Christianity and the language and literature of the ancient Romans.

The Latin Poetry of Thomas Gray
In the first full-scale edition of Thomas Gray's Latin poetry, the Latin text and facing English translation are complemented by a detailed introduction and comprehensive commentary that situate Gray's Latin verse in relation to his vernacular poetry, epistolary correspondence, and, especially, his appropriation of classical and Neo-Latin literature. This book also traces hitherto unlocated manuscripts of several of his Latin poems, and includes an editio princeps of recently discovered Latin verses pertaining to his Neapolitan sojourn. Gray's Latin poetry presents an illuminating portrait of the artist as a young man, mapping his growth and development from his Etonian days to his undergraduate years at Cambridge University, to his continental journey and his return to England. Impressively eclectic in its scope and tone, it ranges from experimental renderings of English, Greek and Italian verse to more strikingly original pieces, including poetic reinterpretations of Alexander Pope's Essay on Man and John Locke's An Essay Concerning Humane Understanding. Gray looks back to a classical past, offering imaginative re-readings of Lucretius, Virgil and Horace. At the same time, his Latin verse is firmly rooted in a postclassical world. At its heart is the theme of presences, whether sacred, imagined, absent or remembered, conveyed with a linguistic ingenuity that facilitates the encoding of homoeroticism in a Neo-Latin language of sensibility.

American Hebraist
Alan Mintz (1947-2017) was a singular figure in the American Jewish literary landscape. In addition to publishing six authoritative books and numerous journal articles on modern and contemporary Jewish culture, Mintz contributed countless reviews and essays to literary journals, including the New Republic, the New York Times Book Review, and the Jewish Review of Books. Scattered in miscellaneous volumes and publications, these writings reveal aspects of Mintz's scholarly personality that are not evident in his monographs. American Hebraist collects fifteen of Mintz's most insightful articles and essays. The topics range from the life and work of Nobel Prize winner S. Y. Agnon--including a chapter from Mintz's unfinished literary biography of that author--to Jewish and Israeli literature, the Holocaust, and a rare autobiographical essay. The chapters are introduced and contextualized by Mintz's longtime colleague and friend David Stern, who opens the book by tracing the arc of Mintz's intellectual career; the volume concludes with a personal essay and remembrance written by Beverly Bailis, the last student to complete a doctorate under Mintz's direction.Brimming with erudition and intriguing biographical notes, American Hebraist provides new insights into the life and work of one of the twentieth century's most important scholars of modern Hebrew literature. Students and scholars alike will benefit from this essential companion to Mintz's scholarship.
