A Companion to the Aeneid in Translation
With this three-volume companion, students can access the literary and historical significance of theAeneidin English through an accessible yet authoritative introduction and line-by-line commentary. Written by a teacher who has taught the Aeneidin both English and Latin for more than twenty years, this guide unpicks Virgil's literary techniques, structures and historical resonances. The line-by-line commentary in Volume 2focuses on two widely read translations of the AeneidBooks 1-6 (in verse by Robert Fagles and in prose by David West). Tanfield helps you understand the Latin behind the choices that translators make as they decide how to craft their own particular readings of the Aeneid. Plus, this companion includes extensive explanatory notes, context and a wide range of scholarly critique to ensure you have everything you need in one place, as well as pointers for further research. For a broad introduction to the many facets of the poem and to its author, Volume 1is available separately.
Johann Buxtorf, Impresario of Hebrew and Jewish Books
Johann Buxtorf (1564-1629) pursued the study of Hebrew and Aramaic and the writings and rituals of Jewish tradition through a long and productive life as a professor at the University of Basel and an impresario of Jewish texts. The focus of this work is on Buxtorf's scholarly practices -- for example, the ways in which he read and made excerpts from a wide variety of Jewish texts, recycled them in his polemical Juden schul (1603), a treatise on the customs and ceremonies of Ashkenazic Jews, and surveyed them in pioneering if incomplete bibliographies. Using a wide variety of unpublished sources, including letters to Buxtorf from Jewish print professionals, this study follows him into the Basel printing houses that produced books in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Yiddish, and reconstructs how he worked there as both an editor and a censor -- even rewriting certain Jewish prayers to eliminate anti-Christian sentiments. Buxtorf took a special interest in the textual history of the Hebrew Bible: he argued that the vowel points and accents had entered its text at a very early stage. This study shows that Buxtorf developed his views in dialogue -- and debate -- with both Jewish and Christian scholars. He often expressed contempt for both the Jews whose texts he read and those whom he occasionally met in Basel, Frankfurt, or elsewhere, yet his passion for Jewish literature of every kind never faltered.
Roger Ascham's Themata Theologica
Roger Ascham is often classified as 'a great mid-Tudor humanist' and he is perhaps best known for his role as tutor to Elizabeth I. His most famous works, The Scholemaster and Toxophilus, have been extensively quarried and anthologised in studies on prose style and English humanism. By contrast, his Neo-Latin works that engaged with theology and key Reformation concerns have languished in the shadows of modern scholarship. Ascham's Themata Theologica('Theological Topics') is one of these, and its content has the potential to open up many an investigative avenue into the intellectual and religious culture of the sixteenth century. This is the first volume to offer a corresponding English translation. The Themata can be dated to the early to mid- 1540s, and was composed by Ascham while still at Cambridge University and serving as a senior fellow at St John's College. The work mainly comprises a compendium of relatively short commentaries on Scriptural verses (both Old and New Testament), many of which developed into expositions on difficult philosophical concepts, such as the notion of felix culpa(literally, 'happy fault') and some of the most intractable theological questions of the day, including the nature of sin, adiaphora ('matters of indifference'), justification and free will. This little-known text offers a rare opportunity to trace the course of Ascham's own religious maturation, but also offers fresh insights into the confessional climate at Cambridge University during one of the most turbulent periods of the Reformation in England.

The Latin Verse of Martin Luther
Martin Luther wrote a number of Latin poems, mostly using traditional classical metres, over the course of his career. He used them to praise friends, insult adversaries and express his faith in times of distress. Up until now, Luther's Neo-Latin poetry has largely fallen through the disciplinary cracks. Literary scholars have traditionally paid more attention to the Latin verse of more celebrated humanist poets such as Petrarch. Students of the Reformation have concentrated far more often on Luther's prose and his famous German hymns than on his Latin poems. Even scholars who are familiar with Luther's Neo-Latin poetry have dismissed it as of only marginal significance. As this book demonstrates, Luther's Latin verses are valuable cultural products that amply reward scholarly reconsideration. Springer's volume is the first to provide English translations of all of them. It also includes extensive introductions and line-by-line annotations for each of the poems, situating them within their literary traditions and contemporary contexts. As such, it enables readers to see that far from being a reformer who more or less repudiated the Classics, or someone who merely dabbled in them, Luther was a confident, even bold, Latin poet, who was serious about working out his own distinctive synthesis between Christianity and the language and literature of the ancient Romans.

The Latin Poetry of Thomas Gray
In the first full-scale edition of Thomas Gray's Latin poetry, the Latin text and facing English translation are complemented by a detailed introduction and comprehensive commentary that situate Gray's Latin verse in relation to his vernacular poetry, epistolary correspondence, and, especially, his appropriation of classical and Neo-Latin literature. This book also traces hitherto unlocated manuscripts of several of his Latin poems, and includes an editio princepsof recently discovered Latin verses pertaining to his Neapolitan sojourn. Gray's Latin poetry presents an illuminating portrait of the artist as a young man, mapping his growth and development from his Etonian days to his undergraduate years at Cambridge University, to his continental journey and his return to England. Impressively eclectic in its scope and tone, it ranges from experimental renderings of English, Greek and Italian verse to more strikingly original pieces, including poetic reinterpretations of Alexander Pope's Essay on Manand John Locke's An Essay Concerning Humane Understanding. Gray looks back to a classical past, offering imaginative re-readings of Lucretius, Virgil and Horace. At the same time, his Latin verse is firmly rooted in a postclassical world. At its heart is the theme of presences, whether sacred, imagined, absent or remembered, conveyed with a linguistic ingenuity that facilitates the encoding of homoeroticism in a Neo-Latin language of sensibility.

Alan Mintz (1947-2017) was a singular figure in the American Jewish literary landscape. In addition to publishing six authoritative books and numerous journal articles on modern and contemporary Jewish culture, Mintz contributed countless reviews and essays to literary journals, including the New Republic, the New York Times Book Review, and the Jewish Review of Books. American Hebraist collects fifteen of Mintz's most insightful articles and essays. The topics range from the life and work of Nobel Prize winner S. Y. Agnon--including a chapter from Mintz's unfinished literary biography of that author--to Jewish and Israeli literature, the Holocaust, and a rare autobiographical essay. The chapters are introduced and contextualized by Mintz's longtime colleague and friend David Stern, who opens the book by tracing the arc of Mintz's intellectual career; the volume concludes with a personal essay and remembrance written by Beverly Bailis, the last student to complete a doctorate under Mintz's direction.Brimming with erudition and intriguing biographical notes, American Hebraist provides new insights into the life and work of one of the twentieth century's most important scholars of modern Hebrew literature. Students and scholars alike will benefit from this essential companion to Mintz's scholarship.

Jews Without Yellow Stars
They were soldiers by circumstance, not by choice. Heroes by necessity, with nothing left to lose, Jewish resistance fighters fought back against the Nazis from strongholds deep in the primevals forests of World War II Belorussia. Among the most ferocious fighters were Jewish female partisans who had lost their children at the hands of the Germans.Hersh Smolar - a Polish Jew, prolific writer, and ardent activist - was front and center in the Jewish resistance. His short vignettes of partisan life in the Nali-boki forest chronicle the quiet, relentless pursuit of the enemy and the ongoing efforts to liberate Jews from the Minsk ghetto.Ruth Murphy's translation of Smolar's Yiddish work gives us an intimate view of ordinary people forced into extraordinary circumstances; people who embarked on unimaginable missions to avenge the brutal murders of their friends, family, and way of life. These are battle reports delivered at a personal level, fraught with anger, heartache, and determination."A careful translation from the original Yiddish of Hersh Smolar's Yidn on gele lates, a collection of stories about Jewish resistance to the German invaders in what was then Belorussia (now Belarus) during World War II. Smolar, a Polish Jew and writer, trapped in German-occupied Minsk during the war, became a leader of the Minsk Jewish resistance. Smolar's vignettes, written soon after the war was over, vividly describe the suffering of Jews in Belorussian ghettos, the dangers that they encountered living in partisan units in the forest, and their passionate hatred of the German Army for its slaughter of their families and their people. Belorussia, unlike European countries to its west, was covered with dense primeval forests, which became the main terrain of the battles between partisans and German soldiers. Unlike in Poland and other West European countries, Jewish and Soviet partisans frequently joined together in fighting the Germans. As elsewhere in Europe, Jewish female partisans, whose children in many cases had been murdered by the Germans, fought the Germans with particular ferocity. Smolar's own participation in these events, and his skill as a writer, give his account of the Jewish resistance in and near Minsk a rare immediacy."-Barbara Epstein, author of The Minsk Ghetto 1941-1943: Jewish Resistance and Soviet Internationalism
Discourse Features of New Testament Greek
This coursebook is designed to be used in connection with lectures and discussion groups or in a self-instruction environment. The book takes a functional approach and builds on the principle that choice implies meaning. Each chapter presents one or more discourse features of Koine Greek that have been shown to make a significant contribution to the exegesis of the Greek New Testament. Part I discusses default orders of constituents in clauses, sentences and phrases, together with the significance of marked orders.Part II identifies the constraint that each common conjunction imposes on how readers are to relate the sentence concerned to its context.Part III considers patterns of reference including why, once participants have been introduced, they are sometimes referred to only in the verb and sometimes by means of a pronoun or noun phrase, as well. It also addresses the significance of omitting the article when referring to activated participants or concepts.Part IV describes some features that have the effect of backgrounding or highlighting information, such as the encoding of information in a participial or relative clause and the use of the historical present.Part V considers how different ways of introducing reported speeches reflect their status in stories. It also discusses the motivations for reporting conversation directly versus indirectly and the significance of introducing direct speech with ὅτι recitativum. The final part reviews criteria that may be cited to support or reject the segmenting of passages into sub-units. Readers need a basic knowledge of introductory Greek and discourse analysis. All examples in the text are provided with a word-by-word translation. Review questions and suggested answers are provided to assist in applying the principles. In this edition, the content has been extensively reviewed and polished, including errata corrections from the prior edition.
Scottish Gaelic
Scottish Gaelic: A Comprehensive Grammar is a definitive description of contemporary Gaelic. The volume presents an authoritative account of modern Gaelic grammar, attending to both idealised usages - as typically taught in formal education - and more colloquial forms. Core chapters include useful observations about dialectal and register differences, such as variations in inflection, pronunciation and word forms. The book also demystifies nuances of the language that many users find opaque, according to recent research. In each chapter, the most important, basic information is presented first (e.g. standard verb conjugations), followed by increasingly detailed information for more advanced users. This way, the book addresses the diverse needs of its intended audience. Brimming with authentic examples, the volume accommodates readers of all levels, from complete beginners to professional linguists. It is both an ideal textbook for structured coursework and an indispensable companion for independent study.
So Many Warm Words
Step into the vivid, unsettled, and sometimes lonely life of the poet Rosa Nevadoska. With a strong foundation in Jewish and Russian education, her deep intellectual hunger pulled her from her native Bialystok toward studies in Ghent, Brussels, Berlin, and Paris. Ultimately, during the time between the wars, she immigrated to the United States.Nevadovska's first publications were in Russian. Then came her Yiddish works. Here, in So Many Warm Words, in English translation as well as the original Yiddish, you can see the world through her eyes, in poignant, at times heartbreaking, images. Walk with her through indelible scenes of quiet despair. Share her wonder at the mysteries of night and silence.Nevadoska writes, "No thing is silent./ Everything possesses a voice." The immediacy of these poems will transport you as she shares the voices of city, mountain and sea; of joy, sorrow and yearning.
