Analysis of American Poster Art As a Medium of Communication During World War I
Effective communication on a massive scale between the government and the people of the United States was essential between 1917 and 1919 to mobilize the American people in support of the First World War effort. The pictorial poster is a medium of visual communication that tells a story, usually with few or no words. This study examines the use of the pictorial poster as the primary medium of communicating the government's needs to the American people for the waging of war. The study is illustrated with 129 plates, consisting primarily of reproductions of World War I war posters. A review of the literature dealing with poster art, the temper of the times (1914-1919), American military heritage, and examination of original and photo reproductions of war posters provide the basis for analysis of the visual communication effort. Categories of need are defined as groupings of war posters with similar themes designed to reinforce, or change, public attitude or behavior to produce tangible products that answered governmental needs. This study found six primary categories of need: 1) awareness of the threat, 2) the call for resources, 3) societal support of the combatants and the allied effort, 4) humanitarian, 5) finish the job-on to victory, and 6) retrenchment. The categories of need, themes, messages, and symbols are summarized in a matrix at plate 129. The principles of pictorial poster design are identified, and applied to selected posters to evaluate the effectiveness of the visual message. Analysis resulted in the following conclusions: 1) the pictorial poster was successful in gaining general public support for the American First World War effort; 2) the principles of pictorial poster design are applicable to visual communication regardless of the media; and 3) the graphic art poster can fulfill an important and mission-related external role in today's Army.This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Mary Sims: A Retrospective celebrates this distinctive late-twentieth century Southern US artist whose works express a very contemporary form of retro cool.A painter and printmaker, Sims (1940-2004) was an exceptional colorist whose meticulously constructed compositions are at once both whimsical and off-beat, displaying an idiosyncratic viewpoint and sly sense of humor.This volume spans her entire career, from her elegant intaglio prints made in the late 1950s, through spare, optically flat portraits of isolated figures on monochrome backgrounds from the 1960s and 1970s, monumental religious paintings that draw on Old Testament stories and mythology to riotous, maximalist still lifes from the 1980s and 1990s.Although based for most of her active career in Arkansas, Sims maintained connections to a variety of art-making centres across the South and Midwest USA. Born in Jackson, Tennessee, she spent her childhood and youth in Memphis where she took classes at the Memphis Academy of Arts (later Memphis College of Art). After finishing a BFA at the University of Iowa, she continued her studies in Rome, then completed an MFA at Tulane University in New Orleans. Returning to Memphis in 1968, she got a job teaching painting and printmaking at Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College). In 1977 Sims and her family moved to Eureka Springs, Arkansas, an artistic and cultural town in the Ozarks where she lived and painted until her death.Featuring 64 works, this publication also includes an illustrated biographical essay by art historian Marina Pacini, and a checklist of the accompanying exhibition.

The Rock Art of Moab, Utah
The image of the desert bighorn sheep everywhere adorns the canyon walls of the American Southwest. Whether painted or pecked onto the rock, these sheep can take on an amazing variety of box-like or streamlined designs. There are, for instance, sheep with heads that have short horns, sweeping rainbow horns, and, sometimes, iconic, curling ram horns. Sheep have legs that are shown with simple extremities, with bent legs as if they are running, with cloven hooves facing front or back, and even sheep with no legs at all. Are the long-gone artists trying to hint at a hidden code, or are the differences simply a preference in artistic style? We will probably never know the full story, but insights are to be had after a thorough inventory of rock art images are catalogued and studied. This is a matter of increased importance as our heritage of petroglyphs and pictographs is being lost to time and vandalism.

Gold from Newton's Apple Tree
An exquisitely illustrated collection of historical guides to creating pigments from flowers and plants Flowering currant, ivy, Portuguese laurel, and woad might all have grown in a medieval garden, but it would have taken special expertise to extract and create rich blue and purple pigments from them. Humans have been extracting dyes and inks from natural materials for millennia, and the practice was firmly established during the medieval era, recorded in manuscripts that survive today. Gold from Newton's Apple Tree brings together recipes for making natural colors according to season, method, and ingredients. This unique book takes its title from an ink recipe derived from a descendant of Sir Isaac Newton's apple tree, in which ingredients extracted from the bark are transformed, seemingly by magic, from brown to a yellow gold. The Berlin Wall divided the city for almost three decades before it fell on 9 November 1989. But this symbol of the Cold War has been travelling longer than it stood still. An object that once seemed immovable now wanders around the world in every format from two-tonne slabs to pocket-sized souvenirs. This collection envisions the atomized and displaced remnants of the Berlin Wall as a mobile ruin with an evolving history. Blake Fitzpatrick and Vid Ingelevics's photographic investigation of the geographical dispersement of its fragments is a form of witness to the history of the wall after it fell.
