While much has been written about the 19th century as a watershed period of curiosity, discovery, and reform, specific comparisons among the fine arts and mathematics have rarely been investigated. Sea Change brings to light connections and individual contributions that eventually led to new paradigms of abstraction, later identified as indicators of modernism. For instance, the mathematician Carl Gauss anticipated the aesthetic herald of "art for art's sake" by nearly one hundred years when he declared that "there are sciences whose study is not encouraged by the prospect of benefits to physical existence," but, rather, by "a pure, disinterested study in joy." The book progresses chronologically through three decades of ongoing efforts by documentarians, theorists, historians, and philosophers to define Documentary, examining the philosophical foundations, ethical implications, and evolving documentarological sensibilities of these definitions. It also reassesses the intense ontological debates about Documentary, highlighting the discourse's expanding definitional landscape. Building on the first volume, which examined thirty definitions from 1895 to 1959, this work weaves an intricate hermeneutical network of interconnections among all sixty definitions. It further anticipates the third volume, which will analyze forty additional definitions of Documentary from 1991 to the present, offering a comprehensive philosophical history of the evolution of Documentary as both concept and practice.

What role do the visual arts play in the emerging commercial spaceflight industry, and vice versa? This book considers the relationship between art practice and space science, presenting new methodologies for art-sci collaboration informed by non-terrestrial contexts. Regarded widely as an irreverent luxury accessible to only a select few, commercial space exploration seems an unlikely setting for contemporary art practice. However, faced with the inevitability of this developing industry and the new environments it presents, a new field of creative practice is emerging. In Art in Orbit design theorist Barbara Brownie argues that these new environments offer novel opportunities that are yet to be fully recognized by the creative industries. Throughout the book, Brownie explores the contexts, questions, challenges and opportunities for creative exploration of form, materials, and the body, in space.
