Hokusai 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō 1806 Horizontal
Hokusai's 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō 1806 Horizontal is the last known full Tokaido series by Hokusai. It is different from his famous 36 Views of Mt Fuji, which are sublime artistic expressions distilling a long life's work.It is different from much of Hokusai's other well known work, like his 100 Views of Mt Fuji. But in that series Hokusai still retained a lot of the humor and the caricature found here.It is different from the many other well known 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō in that Hokusai explores novel ways of designing the print, further developing what he started in the 1804 Horizontal Tokaido.Hokusai experiments with person themes, voids and white space but also do great full landscapes and humorous encounters on the road.

The connotations of the female body in the art of Ana Mendieta
This paper aims to examine the different connotations of the female body that Ana Mendieta represented in her works. With this objective, a state of the question is carried out in which the meanings of the female body that different authors have investigated in the figure of the artist are reviewed. In this sense, the perceptions of the female body that Mendieta represented and that these researchers have analyzed are presented and developed in the aforementioned state of the question divided into 4 blocks of recurring themes in her artistic proposals that show her perspectives on the female corporeality. Relevant data on Mendieta's biography are also included, as well as the historical and artistic context in which she developed her life and artistic career. Finally, testimonies that the artist expressed during her lifetime are added to this work. In addition, we have been advised by people linked to the MUSAC's exhibition project Ana Mendieta in Search of the Origin.
Harmony and Dissonance: Orphism in Paris, 1910-1930
The first publication of its kind, connecting a constellation of artists working at the forefront of abstraction in the early 20th centuryOrphism emerged among a cosmopolitan group of artists active in Paris in the early 1910s, as the innovations of modern life radically altered conceptions of time and space. Engaged with ideas of simultaneity in kaleidoscopic compositions, these artists investigated the transformative possibilities of color, form and motion. Often featuring disks of brilliant color, their work evoked multisensory experiences. When pushed to its limits, Orphism signaled total abstraction. The poet Guillaume Apollinaire, a contemporary, coined the term "Orphism" to describe this move away from Cubism, toward a physically and spiritually transcendent art. His concept referred back to the Greek mythological poet and lyre player Orpheus, whose music thwarted death. The first in-depth examination of the Orphist avant-garde, this revelatory exhibition catalog contextualizes Orphism, tracing its roots, exploring its cross-disciplinary reach and considering its transnational reverberations across 16 illustrated texts by a multigenerational group of authors from different fields. Incisive essays offer new perspectives, delineating Orphism's connection to music, dance and poetry, and investigating the historical and cultural circumstances that shaped its ethos. More than 90 artworks in multiple mediums are punctuated by micro-narratives that view select artists through the Orphist lens, presenting original scholarship on well-known figures such as Robert Delaunay, Sonia Delaunay, Frantisek Kupka and Francis Picabia while also illuminating lesser-known ones such as Mainie Jellett, Morgan Russell and Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso.
Performance
This book presents a theoretical-critical journey about the meaning of the limit of the artist's body in performance through the experience of performances by the artist Rafael Falk. To this end, the concepts of body, limit and event are problematized using references from Art and Philosophy, seeking to bring these concepts closer to the process of mapping the face-to-face performances carried out by this young artist. For the theoretical basis of this study, we used a transdisciplinary perspective based on the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and Baruch de Espinosa, addressing references and concepts that are interconnected and related to the subject of the research, which is inserted in the field of Visual Arts. The artists who make up the references for this study are Joseph Beuys, Marina Abramovic and Regina Jos矇 Galindo, whose poetics enable us to problematize the performances of the artist Rafael Falk.
Engendering an Avant-Garde
A comprehensive examination of the origins of Vancouver photo-conceptualism. The book employs discourse analysis, feminist critique and settler-colonial theory to analyse the landscapes of Jeff Wall, Ian Wallace, Marian Penner Bancroft, Liz Magor and others.
Venice in Blue
This volume is the first of its kind to focus solely on the material of handmade blue paper in Italy, shedding new light on its significance and transcultural impact. Bringing together perspectives from art and book historians, paper conservators and paper historians, this publication explores the proliferation of the use of blue paper for drawings, prints, and printed books in Veneto and beyond during the first half of the 16th century.
Addressing the Other Woman
This book analyses how three artists - Adrian Piper, Nancy Spero and Mary Kelly - worked with the visual dimensions of language in the 1960s and 1970s.
Horizontal Together
Horizontal together tells the story of 1960s art and queer culture in New York through the overlapping circles of Andy Warhol, underground filmmaker Jack Smith and experimental dance star Fred Herko. Taking a pioneering approach to this intersecting cultural milieu, the book uses a unique methodology that draws on queer theory, dance studies and the analysis of movement, deportment and gesture to look anew at familiar artists and artworks, but also to bring to light queer artistic figures' key cultural contributions to the 1960s New York art world. Illustrated with rarely published images and written in clear and fluid prose, Horizontal together will appeal to specialists and general readers interested in the study of modern and contemporary art, dance and queer history.
Opening the Archive: The ABCs of Zero
Unpublished archival material looking back on one of the most far-reaching avant-garde art movements in mid-century EuropeThe ZERO avant-garde movement was founded in D羹sseldorf in the 1950s by Heinz Mack and Otto Piene, who called it "a zone of silence and pure possibilities for a new beginning." Each traditional concept of art invited a different challenge. Kinetics and light replaced brush and canvas; the studio became the exhibition space, with music playing in the background; books were disseminated with the help of concrete poets. Throughout the '50s and into the 1960s, ZERO took hold in cities across Europe and counted among its ranks artists such as Jean Tinguely, Lucio Fontana and Yves Klein. In The ABCs of ZERO, writers, scholars and authors tell the full story of the movement, from A for atelier to Z for ZERO. A wealth of photos and documents recalls a moment of peaceful utopia in Europe, where society faced the future with a spirit of optimism and creativity.
Minoan Wall Painting of Pseira, Crete
Short description: Evidence is presented for restoring the fragmentary wall painting from the Minoan shrine on the islet of Pseira located just of the northeastern coast of Crete. A large-scale goddess faces a smaller suppliant in a presentation scene on an incurved altar platform. Virtually restored to the east wall of Room 6, the goddess confirms the building as a shrine and religious center of the community. The painting's Knossian style and technique, and imported Knossian ritual vessels, argue for a strong Knossian religious presence at Pseira. Long description: This study presents evidence for restoring the fragmentary painting from Pseira. It argues against previous reconstructions, finding errors including ignoring the fragments' scales. With the fragments' scales accurately recorded, the study reveals a large-scale goddess facing a smaller suppliant in a presentation scene on an incurved altar platform. The reconstruction is based on examinations, drawings, and photographs taken to scale of the fragments and digital imaging. The painted garments are translated into modern cloth replicas that adorn live models that pose as goddess and suppliant. Virtually restored to the east wall of Room 6, the goddess positively establishes the building already conjectured as a shrine and identifies it as the religious center of the community. The painting's Knossian style and technique, and imported Knossian ritual vessels, argue for a strong Knossian religious presence at Pseira. Knossian style religious processions likely culminated at the shrine to present offerings to the goddess.

The Painted Word
Reissued for today's reader with a redesigned cover by the renowned artist Seymour Chwast, Tom Wolfe trains his satirical eye on Modern Art in this "masterpiece" (The Washington Post). What has become of art? In his dazzling and controversial book The Painted Word, Tom Wolfe explores this question and more as he investigates early trends in Modern Art and critiques the critics who dominated the art world during the 1960s and '70s. Wolfe addresses the scope of Modern Art, from its founding days as Abstract Expressionism through its transformations to Pop, Op, Minimal, and Conceptual. He bring into question the work of famous avant-garde artists like Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, and others. With gorgeous, pointed prose, Wolfe investigates what has become of Modern Art and examines the control that art critics have over the art world at large. Elegant, hilarious, and devastating, The Painted Word presents a sharp critique of the modern state of art.

Beyond the Happening
The Happenings that burst on to the late 1950s cultural scene were rapidly declared pass矇 and even 'dead', but this book reveals how an international network of artists continued to develop their premises into the late 1960s and 1970s, transforming the form into an interdisciplinary vehicle for studying interpersonal relations.
Surface design
This book is about how textile surface design can add value to party fashion. It is based on the current party fashion market, which reflects the aesthetic conception of designers, based on unique, exclusive pieces based on the profile of each client, taking into account personal taste, physical type and even the culture of a locality. On the other hand, fashion design is rethinking the design needs and structures of the fashion party, going through an industrial process and visualising mass production. In this sense, the strategies, the identity of the product, the brand and the environments seek to innovate in ideas and objectives, believing that the result can be more efficient. So this work aims to highlight the surface design to be applied by means of printing, embroidery and the application of lace and ornaments, seeking agility in production and at the same time adding value to the product.
101 Surrealists
2024 marks the centennial of surrealism, one of the most influential artistic movements of the modern era. In 1924, Andr矇 Breton wrote the Surrealist Manifesto, a call to arms that established surrealism as a literary and artistic movement.Surrealism was not in origin an art movement, but a philosophical strategy. It was a way of life--a rebellion against the establishment that had given the world the hideous slaughter of World War I. Instead of trying to analyze the work of the surrealists, bestselling author and surrealist artist Desmond Morris focuses on them as people. What were their personalities, their predilections, their character strengths and flaws? Did they enjoy a social life or were they loners? Were they bold eccentrics or timid recluses? 101 Surrealists features the famous--Leonora Carrington, Marcel Duchamp, Salvador Dal穩, Max Ernst, Frida Kahlo, Ren矇 Magritte, Joan Mir籀, and Francis Picabia--and the overlooked: Hans Bellmer, Ithell Colquhoun, Leonor Fini, Julio Gonz獺lez, E. L. T. Mesens, Edith Rimmington, and Kay Sage. The book draws on the author's personal knowledge of the surrealists, capturing in concise form their lives, loves, and idiosyncrasies. The arts of surrealism were both spectacular and international, shaped by the darkest, most irrational workings of the unconscious. Shocking, witty, and always entertaining, Morris's accounts illuminate the striking variation in approaches to the surrealist philosophy, both in the artists' work and in their lives. 101 Surrealists will complement Morris's earlier biographical volumes by encapsulating each artist in short, concise texts that convey with immediacy the impact and significance of each of the 101 artists featured.

Kawase Hasui 40 Prints
Hasui Kawase (川瀬 巴水, May 18, 1883 - November 7, 1957) was a Japanese artist that took up ukiyo-e printing as it disappeared as a commercial printing form and instead became an art for its own sake, so to say.In Hokusai and Hiroshige織s time, first half of the 1800s, ukiyo-e prints were cheap - around the price of a bowl of soup -and filled the market which would later develop in postcards and magazines.Hasui designed traditional prints in a western style, mostly landscapes, often with special lighting effects like evening og night and special weather conditions- he was fond of showing temples and shrines in snow.He worked closely with a single publisher - Shōzaburō Watanabe - throughout his life. The Great Kantō earthquake in 1923 destroyed Watanabe's workshop, including the finished woodblocks for the yet-undistributed prints and Hasui's sketchbooks. He lost 188 sketchbooks in which he had drawn landscapes and other subjects. In 1956, he was named a Japanese Living National Treasure. The government Committee for the Preservation of Intangible Cultural Treasures had intended to honor traditional printmaking via awards to Hasui and Ito Shinsui in 1953.

Poor Artists
This debut book by the popular collaborative team--heralded as one of the first truly new critical voices of the 21st century-- blends real-world experience and poignant storytelling into a provocative and heartfelt portrait of the life of an artist today. At a moment in which working as a professional artist is an increasingly unattainable luxury, art criticism duo The White Pube investigate why so many artists try anyway. Labeled "the Diet Prada of the art world" by British Vogue, in Poor Artists, writers Gabrielle de la Puente and Zarina Muhammad ridicule a contemporary art world that has turned art into artworks, art schools into art universities, and creative expression into cut-throat competition.Poor Artists follows aspiring artist Quest Talukdar as she embarks on a surreal journey into the creative industry, where she must decide whether she cares more about success or staying true to herself. Featuring dialogue from anonymous interviews with real people who have all had to ask themselves the same question-- including a Turner Prize winner or two, a recluse, a Venice Biennale fraudster, a communist messiah, a ghost, and a literal knight--The White Pube tell the story of art like never before.

David Smith
The first book to explore David Smith's deep engagement with the natural world as source, subject, and site for his art. Spanning the full career of the sculptor David Smith (1906-65), this study features some fifty sculptures alongside related paintings, reliefs, and works on paper to reclaim the primacy of nature within his expansive oeuvre. Smith's adventurous approach to three-dimensional form has permanently expanded the vocabulary and range of sculptural practice. The first American artist to make welded metal sculptures and incorporate industrial means in his work, Smith's enlistment of nature as material and prime setting for his art was equally innovative. As explored in the book's introduction, reflections by the artist's daughters, and an essay by Jed Morse, Smith's creative vision is firmly rooted in landscape and the natural world.
Politics Unseen
In Politics Unseen, Ellen Macfarlane radically reframes the "pure photographs" of California art photography society Group f.64, known for depicting Western landscapes, fruits and vegetables, flowers, and faces. By foregrounding f.64 members' and their prints' alliances across commercial, political, and artistic domains, the book shatters entrenched understandings of the group as disinterested in contemporary events and unseats conceptions of its prints as icons of modernist purity. Instead, Politics Unseen argues the politics of f.64's photographs become visible when interwar ideas about "purity" in the areas of eugenics, racial essence, nutrition, colonialism, and horticulture are interrogated. Ultimately, Politics Unseen alters perceptions not only of f.64, but also of what constituted a political image in 1930s America.
Tabo
A fresh look at a unique masterpiece of Indo-Tibetan art. Over one thousand years old, the Buddhist monastery complex of Tabo and its exquisitely preserved works of art rank among the most fascinating cultural and historical treasures of mankind. The new edition of this richly illustrated volume shows the beauty of these legendary sanctuaries for the first time in the highest digital resolution and describes in detail the entire gamut of Western Tibetan artistic styles. The monastery of Tabo, located in the northern Indian Himalayan region and founded in 996 AD, is the oldest temple complex in the Tibetan cultural area that has been preserved in its original state. Tabo's main temple, the Temple of the Enlightened Gods, is a unique work of art: one-thousand-year-old sculptures and paintings, created in an incomparably fine style by Indian and Western Tibetan artists, together form a walk-in, horizontal mandala. With special permission, Peter van Ham was able to spend decades photographing the temple halls, which are otherwise off-limits to cameras. Most recently, he was able to capture them in the world's highest digital resolution. With four hundred images--150 of them new to this edition--the book provides detailed background information and the latest research findings on the spectacular yet endangered sanctuary.
This Is Doug Hall
Even if you know Doug Hall's work, you don't know "this" Doug Hall: the little boy afraid of bears in Boston who became the love-smitten art student who grew into a fearless Conceptual artist challenging many of our most beloved assumptions. Although lavishly and beautifully illustrated, this is not a book only to be looked at but one to be thoroughly read and enjoyed. In an account at once intimate and historical, Doug Hall writes eloquently about his development as a person and an artist. He situates his story within the broader conflicts of the latter part of the twentieth century and shows how these often absurd forces influenced a generation of artists to adopt radical art practices--video, performance, and installation--as a counter to the modernist aesthetics that preceded them. From his hilarious and troubling descriptions of the Altamont Free Concert (1969) and his disorienting confrontation in Berkeley with an LSD-tripping Indian Saddhu to his thoughts about teaching, making art, and the thinking behind some of his most important projects, Hall's writing is generous and instructive for all those interested in our humanity and how it is nurtured through the arts.
Angelica Mesiti
A contemporary reimagining of solstice traditions by the renowned Australian video artist Angelica Mesiti is one of Australia's leading contemporary artists. Celebrated for her distinctive moving-image and sound-based works, the Sydney-born, Paris-based artist explores individual and communal forms of expression, ranging from sign language, choreographic gesture, Morse code, and whistling to ancestral musical traditions, body percussion, and communication between nonhuman species. The Rites of When, Mesiti's first solo exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, pays tribute to ritual practices of seasonal renewal, both ancient and contemporary. The monumental, seven-channel video installation--comprising two sweeping movements that conjure hibernal (winter) and aestival (summer) solstice celebrations--is an immersive reflection on the age-old and continuing relationship between humankind, the natural world, and the cosmos. With choreographed performance, new music compositions, and soaring aerial views, the exhibition offers a vision of an enmeshed world and the renewal of hope.Angelica Mesiti: The Rites of When documents the second major commission for the postindustrial Tank space at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Richly illustrated with stills from Mesiti's cinematic video installation, it features a new essay by Isobel Parker Philip and an interview by Beatrice Gralton. An additional visual section illuminates the influences that shaped the work.

Out of Paper
A dynamic look at how artists used paper to radically redefine the relationship between the body and its surroundings, and to propose new conceptions of ecology From sketches created inside pants pockets to paper-strewn performances that took cues from protests and riots, the work on paper in the 1960s acted as a mobile, flexible connective tissue between the body and the world around it. In this book, Katie Anania reveals how artists Carolee Schneemann, William Anastasi, Richard Tuttle, Robert Morris, and Charles White harnessed this historically intimate medium during a period in which Americans were becoming urgently concerned with identity, consumer culture, the overreach of state power, and the rapidly deteriorating natural world. Her reexamination of drawing shows how the omnipresence of paper facilitated artists' critiques of dominant systems, from modern throwaway culture to bureaucracy to colonial violence. Engaging a wide range of actions--such as recycling, recording, cutting, planning, and erasing--Anania offers fresh insights into paper's role not merely as a preparatory medium but one essential to the histories of performance, minimalist, conceptual, and land art. Out of Paper uses materiality studies, social history, and feminist art historical methods to situate paper as a major conduit for thought in the postwar United States.
'Pataphysics Unrolled
In the 1890s, French poet and playwright Alfred Jarry founded pataphysics, the absurdist "science of imaginary solutions," a concept that has been nominally recognized as the precursor to Dadaism, Surrealism, and the Theater of the Absurd, among other movements. Over a century after Jarry "made the gesture of dying," Katie L. Price and Michael R. Taylor argue that it is time to take the comedic intervention of pataphysics seriously. 'Pataphysics Unrolled collects critical and creative essays to create an unauthorized account of pataphysical experimentation from its origins in the late nineteenth century through the contemporary moment. Reaching beyond the geographic and cultural boundaries normally associated with pataphysics, this volume presents rich readings of pataphysical syzygy, traces the influence of pataphysics across disciplines and outside of coteries such as the Coll癡ge de 'Pataphysique, and asks fundamental questions about the field of modern and contemporary studies that challenge distinctions between the modern and the postmodern, high and low culture, the serious and the comic. Touching on disciplines such as literature, art, architecture, education, music, and technology, this book reveals how pataphysics has been a platform and medium for persistent intellectual, poetic, conceptual, and artistic experimentation for over a century. In addition to the editors, the contributors to this volume include Charles Bernstein, Marc D矇cimo, Adam Dickinson, Johanna Drucker, Craig Dworkin, Catherine Hansen, James Hendler, John Heon, Ted Hiebert, Andrew Hugill, Steve McCaffery, Seth McDowell, Jerome McGann, Anne M. Mulhall, Marcus O'Dair, Jean-Michel Rabat矇, Orchid Tierney, and Brandon Walsh.

Queer Anatomies
In centuries past, sexual body-parts and same-sex desire were un-men--tionables de-barred from polite conver-sa-tion and printed discourse. Yet one scientific discipline-ana-to-my-had license to rep-re-sent and nar-rate the in-timate details of the human body-anus and genitals in-clud-ed. Figured with-in the frame of an anatomical plate, pre-sen-ta-tions of dissected bo-dies and body-parts were often soberly tech-ni-cal. But just as often mon-strous, provoca-tive, flirtatious, theatri-cal, beau-tiful, and even sensual. Queer Anatomies explores overlooked examples of erotic expression within 18th and 19th-century anatomical imagery. It uncovers the subtle eroticism of certain anatomical illustrations, and the queerness of the men who made, used and collected them. As a foundational subject for physicians, surgeons and artists in 18th- and 19th-century Europe, anatomy was a privileged, male-dominated domain. Artistic and medical compe-tence depended on a deep knowledge of anatomy and offered cultural legitimacy, healing authority, and aesthetic discernment to those who practiced it. The anatomical image could serve as a virtual queer space, a private or shared closet, or a men's club. Serious anatomical subjects were charged with erotic, often homoerotic, undertones. Taking brilliant works by Gautier Dagoty, William Cheselden, and Joseph Maclise, and many others, Queer Anatomies assembles a lost archive of queer expression-115 illustra-tions, in full-colour reproduction-that range from images of nudes, dissected bodies, penises, vaginas, rectums, hands, faces, and skin, to scenes of male viewers gazing upon works of art governed by anatomical principles. Yet the men who produced and savored illustrated anatomies were reticent, closeted. Diving into these textual and represen-ta-tional spaces via essayistic reflection, Queer Anatomies decodes their words and images, even their silences. With a range of close readings and com-par-ison of key images, this book unearths the connections between medical history, connoisseur-ship, queer studies, and art history and the understudied relationship between anatomy and desire.

Paradise, Volume 3
The third and final volume of Ken Hollings' personal reflections on Trash Aesthetics. In Paradise, Hollings tells the story of three kings who squandered everything they had in a grandiose spectacle of waste. King Ludwig II of Bavaria, "King of Rock 'n' Roll" Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson, the "King of Pop," all shared the same doomed innocence. Their lives and early deaths were connected through individual displays of unfettered extravagance that brought them to the very edge of ruin. Each of them lived out their personal ideals of beauty and pleasure--even after the money was gone. In his reworking of Dante Alighieri's Paradiso, Hollings presents Heaven as a place of rebellious, but tragic, self-indulgence. As he notes in his introduction: "You have to be in Heaven to see Hell."
