For Dear Life
A visual study of how artists have shaped responses to disability from the 1960s to the Covid era. In recent years, the art world has seen an explosion of activity confronting issues of illness, disability, and the vulnerability of the human body. This development, which was set in motion by disability justice movements of the twenty-first century, accelerated at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Contemporary artists with disabilities and chronic illnesses have produced influential bodies of art and writing, seeking to highlight relations of mutual dependence and practices of care. These artists have dramatically expanded discourse about access, while reframing disability as a refusal to conform to the pace, architecture, and economic conditions of contemporary life. For Dear Life explores how this turn was preceded by the work of artists and activists beginning in the 1960s and 1970s. Informed by intersecting movements that included civil rights, antiwar, women's and gay liberation, and disability rights, artists of that era represented the body in works that merged the personal and political. This book, and the accompanying exhibition, surveys artistic responses to vulnerability, illness, impairment, and forms of unruly embodiment, tracing artistic legacies that have shaped contemporary currents in art. Gathering an intergenerational group of artists from across the United States, the project illuminates connections among art practices, social movements, and medical events of the past and present.
German Expressionism
Reverberations of the young rebels and influencers in the artist group Br羹cke. The artist group Br羹cke is Germany's most important contribution to international modernism. The group was formed in Dresden in 1905 by four young architecture students: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Otto Bleyl, Erich Heckel, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Together they developed a painting style with vivid colors, simplified forms, and large color fields that express internal feelings rather than reproducing an external reality. The group disbanded in 1913, but their collaboration and marketing strategies have been inspirational for several generations of artists. These young artists wanted to renew art and life in the German Imperial Empire and break with the prevailing moral norms of the day. They were interested in topics like man and nature; the naked body; portraits; self-portraits; the merging of life and art; and life in the vibrant metropolis of Berlin. In a time like the present, when a young generation feels the need for a new way of living, thinking, and organizing, reflecting on Br羹cke feels particularly relevant.

The true history of tattoo as both art and profession in the West There is a pervasive stereotype of tattoo culture as relating to an underworld of scoundrels, sailors, and ne'er-do-wells, yet it has existed in the West as a professionalized art practice for centuries. Drawing on extensive new research and unprecedented access to largely unpublished private archives of photographs, art, and ephemera, Matt Lodder offers a new perspective on the history of commercial tattooing in Europe and the United States, beginning even before it emerged as a recognizable profession in the mid-nineteenth century. In the process, he shows that the art of tattoo has long been both practiced and commissioned by individuals across economic, gender, and class divides; he also examines the stylistic trends that have shaped tattoo's development as an art form over its history. Formally the demands are for covering up nipples on old Japanese prints. There is no improper content. The authors believe that the real reason however, is politically motivated, because it was a condition of publishing and not a result of the identification of any special audience opportunity.However, there may just be such an audience, which this issue of the title will then accomodate. Shinsui Ito was born 4 February 1898 in the Fukagawa district of Tokyo and died 8 May 1972.Shinsui Itō was his pseudonym.Shinsui designed mostly bijin-ga and only more occasionally landscape prints, see Shinsui Ito Landscapes by authors. Bijin-ga is "pretty ladies", akin to pin-up art.Bijin-ga (美人画, びじんが, "beautiful person picture") is a generic term for pictures of beautiful women (bijin) in Japanese art, especially in woodblock printing of the ukiyo-e genre.At the age of ten, young Hajime found employment at the Tokyo Printing Company after his father織s business went bankrupt, and here he began to show serious interest and talent in Nihonga, Japanese-style painting.In 1911 he was introduced to Kaburagi Kiyokata, a renowned painter, and became Kiyokata's student. It was Kiyokata that gave Hajime his artist's name, Shinsui. When Shinsui was eighteen years old, his paintings were seen by the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo at an exhibition at Kiyokata's art school.Ukiyo-e itself is a genre of woodblock prints and paintings that was produced in Japan from the 17th century to the 19th century. The prints were very popular amongst the Japanese merchants and the middle class of the time.

Theology in the Mode of Monk
This captivating study engages two of the most influential theologians of the twentieth century: Karl Barth, the Swiss Protestant theologian who constructed his theology "from above" and engaged the powers in the background of Nazi Germany, and James H. Cone, the father of Black Theology in America, who constructed his theology "from below" and confronted white racism--the most intractable issue in America's history. In this three-volume project, Carr employs the aesthetic thinking of the jazz legend Thelonious Monk to reconceptualize, restructure, and advance the theologies of Barth and Cone. This first volume appeals to the Bebop tune "Epistrophy" as the analogical framework for (re)conceptualizing the historical form and hermeneutical backgrounds of Karl Barth and James H. Cone. Monk's mode of musical thinking establishes the aesthetic theological architecture Carr uses to reiterate and reimagine the revolutionary theological contributions of Barth and Cone.

Over the past decade, there has been a burgeoning interest in the realm of art activism within the Southwest Asia and North Africa region, shedding light on the political implications of aesthetic representation. Nevertheless, a critical inquiry into how political aesthetics can formulate both discernible and imperceptible resistance strategies in response to resurging authoritarianism and counter-revolution after the 2011 uprisings in the region remains conspicuously absent. This book delves into a comprehensive examination of diverse art forms, ranging from street art and cinema to performance art, as well as music and theatre, scrutinizing the manifestations of aesthetic resilience at the epicentre of the political resistance against oppression and authoritarianism in Sudan, Iran, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Lebanon, Yemen and Syria. The pragmatics of creative processes
Pragmatics studies the aims of communication by revealing the speaker's intentions indirectly through the statements made. It focuses on a study of the processes by which we understand what is implied. It is related to the procedure used by director and illustrator Hayao Miyazaki to create visual narratives, taken from the making of his animated film entitled: Chihiro's Journey (2001) by Ghibli Studios. Inspired by the knowledge he acquires in the social sphere, in folk tales, in the interactions between individuals, he goes on to shape his narratives.

Good Swastika, Bad Swastika
The swastika is a graphic figure that has been both revered and reviled in the world. Revered as a holy symbol in India and other cultures in the East. Reviled as a symbol associated with cultural elitism, genocide, warfare, and plunder in the West. However, there are four main swastikas. The arms can turn right or left. The orientation can be to the cardinal directions (the sides being north-south-east-west); or can be to the intermediate directions (the sides being northeast-southwest-southeast-northwest). The directions in the Vedic tradition have specific qualities that represent the eight primary functions in life. Using these qualities, it is possible to obtain a detailed symbolic value for each of the four versions of the swastika. One swastika represents the Vedic ideal, fulfilling all aspects of life in progress and fulfillment. One seems to represent capitalistic society. A third exhibits the values of nomadic groups. The fourth has the qualities that were seen in the Nazi regime in Germany, where it was its ever-present insignia. Readers can judge for themselves the validity of the logic and the conclusions presented. At the very least, the book gives an opportunity to think on the ways life can be organized and lived.

Theology in the Mode of Monk
This captivating study engages two of the most influential theologians of the twentieth century: Karl Barth, the Swiss Protestant theologian, who constructed his theology "from above" and engaged the powers in the background of Nazi Germany, and James H. Cone, the father of Black Theology in America, who constructed his theology "from below" and confronted white racism--the most intractable issue in America's history. Year of the Bath
In Year of the Bath, artist Gyan Shrosbree has created paintings emulating a variety of iconographies; boots, houseplants, ladies, and landline telephones, which carry their own signature personalities. During the course of this show Shrosbree has invited the curation of the work to be rearranged, enabling a process of storytelling.This engages the paintings to interact with each other as icons or props on the stage. Compositional friendships begin shifting and emerging into new conversations. Narratives unfold during the process of playing within the repetition of the forms enlivened by their own notability.These paintings are stars in performance. Through setting the stage the paintings begin living their own life out of the control of their maker. Is it a radiant visual stimulus, an intangible function of light, or a material substance to be molded and arrayed?
