The Imaginary Institution of India

2024/11/24 出版

Featuring the work of around 30 artists in a wide array of mediums, this exhibition catalog captures a unique moment in modern Indian art, one marked by immense creativity and innovation. The period between 1975 and 1998 was a tumultuous time in India, as the country witnessed significant political, economic, and social upheavals, shaping the nation's trajectory for decades to come. It was also a time of artistic audacity highlighted by a shift away from traditional themes and styles. This richly illustrated volume explores the myriad ways Indian artists responded to and engaged with this period of change. Thematic chapters look at issues such as the urban transformation of the 1970s and '80s; the institutionalization of indigenous and vernacular art practices; photography and street theater; and installation-based work. Accompanied by illuminating texts by scholars in the field, this book also features vibrant reproductions and photographs of the work of thirty major artists, including painters Bhupen Khakhar and Arpita Singh, photographers Sheba Chhachhi and Sunil Gupta, and installation artists Sheela Gowda and Nalini Malani.Readers will learn how artists began to experiment with new forms and techniques; how the aftermath of the Emergency led to a surge of socially conscious art that critiqued the government; and how prominent women artists challenged traditional gender roles and addressed issues of female identity and experience. This unique volume explores the way each of these developments helped to establish India as a major force in the contemporary art world, and reveals how the artists who emerged during this time continue to have a profound influence on Indian art today.

For Dear Life

Jill,Dawsey  著
2024/11/23 出版

A visual study of how artists have shaped responses to disability from the 1960s to the Covid era. In recent years, the art world has seen an explosion of activity confronting issues of illness, disability, and the vulnerability of the human body. This development, which was set in motion by disability justice movements of the twenty-first century, accelerated at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Contemporary artists with disabilities and chronic illnesses have produced influential bodies of art and writing, seeking to highlight relations of mutual dependence and practices of care. These artists have dramatically expanded discourse about access, while reframing disability as a refusal to conform to the pace, architecture, and economic conditions of contemporary life. For Dear Life explores how this turn was preceded by the work of artists and activists beginning in the 1960s and 1970s. Informed by intersecting movements that included civil rights, antiwar, women's and gay liberation, and disability rights, artists of that era represented the body in works that merged the personal and political. This book, and the accompanying exhibition, surveys artistic responses to vulnerability, illness, impairment, and forms of unruly embodiment, tracing artistic legacies that have shaped contemporary currents in art. Gathering an intergenerational group of artists from across the United States, the project illuminates connections among art practices, social movements, and medical events of the past and present.

German Expressionism

Ingram 出版
2024/11/23 出版

Reverberations of the young rebels and influencers in the artist group Br羹cke. The artist group Br羹cke is Germany's most important contribution to international modernism. The group was formed in Dresden in 1905 by four young architecture students: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Otto Bleyl, Erich Heckel, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Together they developed a painting style with vivid colors, simplified forms, and large color fields that express internal feelings rather than reproducing an external reality. The group disbanded in 1913, but their collaboration and marketing strategies have been inspirational for several generations of artists. These young artists wanted to renew art and life in the German Imperial Empire and break with the prevailing moral norms of the day. They were interested in topics like man and nature; the naked body; portraits; self-portraits; the merging of life and art; and life in the vibrant metropolis of Berlin. In a time like the present, when a young generation feels the need for a new way of living, thinking, and organizing, reflecting on Br羹cke feels particularly relevant.

Art in a State of Siege

Princeton 出版
2024/11/23 出版

An art historical epic for dangerous times What do artworks look like in extreme cases of collective experience? What signals do artists send when enemies are at the city walls and the rule of law breaks down, or when a tyrant suspends the law to attack from inside? Art in a State of Siege tells the story of three compelling images created in dangerous moments and the people who experienced them--from Philip II of Spain to Carl Schmitt--whose panicked gaze turned artworks into omens. Acclaimed art historian Joseph Koerner reaches back to the eve of iconoclasm and religious warfare to explore the most elusive painting ever painted. In Hieronymus Bosch's Garden of Delights, enemies are everywhere: Jews and Ottomans at the gates, witches and heretics at home, sins overtaking the mind. Following a paper trail leading from Bosch's time to World War II, Koerner considers a monumental self-portrait painted by Max Beckmann in 1927. Created when Germany was often governed by emergency decree, this image brazenly claimed to decide Europe's future--until the Nazis deemed it to be a threat to the German people. For South African artist William Kentridge, Beckmann exemplified "art in a state of siege." Koerner shows how his work served as beacon during South Africa's racialist apartheid rule and inspired Kentridge's breakthrough animations of drawings being made, erased, and remade. Spanning half a millennium but urgent today, Art in a State of Siege reveals how, in dire straits, art becomes the currency of last resort.

Acting on Hope World War II Black and Minority Veterans

A V,Hankins  著
Ingram 出版
2024/11/23 出版

World War II will remain one of the most significant events in the annals of mankind. That war changed the lives of people all around the world. Women came out, atypically, to work out of necessity, in the process demonstrating both skill and devotion. Black people and those of other minority groups had to face discrimination and fascism, yet they did so with honor, self-sacrifice, and hard work. America went from a place of segregation and inequality to one of legal desegregation in both civil society and the military. World history is replete with the stories of love, personal endurance, and courage of those who sacrificed their lives to make the world a better place for us all. Those people acted on hope. That is why the title of this book is Acting on Hope.

Catesby's Natural History

Bodleian 出版
2024/11/23 出版

A beautiful reproduction of naturalist Mark Catesby's flora and fauna illustrations of North America and the Caribbean. Mark Catesby was an eighteenth-century naturalist and artist whose work on the natural history of North America and the Caribbean still resonates today. During several perilous trips, Catesby collected specimens and made extensive observations in the field, gathering material that would eventually become The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands, which featured 220 elaborate, distinctive hand-colored illustrations. With their striking combinations of animals and plants paired together with the first-hand observations he made, Catesby's stunning illustrations were widely appreciated in their time and catalyzed interest in the natural history of Colonial America. Ultimately, his work was established as a key reference for the scientific understanding of natural history. As an artist, Catesby meticulously recorded the environment, sifting fact from fiction about the lives of the plants and animals he observed. As a collector, he introduced many living plants to Britain, thereby changing European gardens forever. Catesby's Natural History reproduces all the original plates and shows how Catesby's practical field experience shaped his work in all areas. Whether through the now-extinct species he recorded or the cultural changes he witnessed, his research continues to be relevant, demonstrating the vulnerability and fragility of the natural world.

Nuyorican and Diasporican Visual Art

Ingram 出版
2024/11/22 出版

Although Puerto Rican artists have always been central figures in contemporary American and international art worlds, they have largely gone unrecognized and been excluded from art history canons. Nuyorican and Diasporican Visual Art provides a critical survey of Puerto Rican art production in the United States from the 1960s to the present. The contributors assert the importance and contemporaneity of the Nuyorican art movement by tracing its emergence alongside other American vanguardist movements, highlighting its innovations, and exploring it as an expression of Puerto Rican culture beyond New York to include cities such as Chicago, Philadelphia, and Orlando. They also foreground the contributions and radical aesthetics of female, Black, and queer Puerto Rican artists. Following the expansion and decentralization of the Puerto Rican diaspora and its artistic output, this volume is a call to action for scholars, curators, and artists to address the historical inequalities that have marginalized Diasporican artists and reassess the presence of Puerto Rican artists. Tattoos

Matt,Lodder  著
Ingram 出版
2024/11/22 出版

The true history of tattoo as both art and profession in the West There is a pervasive stereotype of tattoo culture as relating to an underworld of scoundrels, sailors, and ne'er-do-wells, yet it has existed in the West as a professionalized art practice for centuries. Drawing on extensive new research and unprecedented access to largely unpublished private archives of photographs, art, and ephemera, Matt Lodder offers a new perspective on the history of commercial tattooing in Europe and the United States, beginning even before it emerged as a recognizable profession in the mid-nineteenth century. In the process, he shows that the art of tattoo has long been both practiced and commissioned by individuals across economic, gender, and class divides; he also examines the stylistic trends that have shaped tattoo's development as an art form over its history. Lodder introduces the many artists and professionals who shaped tattoo history, including early figures like Martin Hildebrandt, the first-known professional tattoo artist in the West; prominent woman artists like Grace Bell and Jessie Knight; mid-twentieth-century icons like Sailor Jerry and Les Skuse and the Bristol Tattoo Club; and contemporary industry stars including Ed Hardy, Davy Jones, and the Leu family. Richly illustrated with rarely published images, this important book is the first to examine the history of tattoo in the west as both a serious profession and an art form.

Ito Shinsui Bijin-ga Censored

Ingram 出版
2024/11/22 出版

This version of the title is censored on the demands of self-publishing platform BOD.es in Spain, which is a subsidiary of the German self-publishing platform BOD.de. Formally the demands are for covering up nipples on old Japanese prints. There is no improper content. The authors believe that the real reason however, is politically motivated, because it was a condition of publishing and not a result of the identification of any special audience opportunity. However, there may just be such an audience, which this issue of the title will then accomodate. Shinsui Ito was born 4 February 1898 in the Fukagawa district of Tokyo and died 8 May 1972.Shinsui Itō was his pseudonym.Shinsui designed mostly bijin-ga and only more occasionally landscape prints, see Shinsui Ito Landscapes by authors. Bijin-ga is "pretty ladies", akin to pin-up art.Bijin-ga (美人画, びじんが, "beautiful person picture") is a generic term for pictures of beautiful women (bijin) in Japanese art, especially in woodblock printing of the ukiyo-e genre. At the age of ten, young Hajime found employment at the Tokyo Printing Company after his father織s business went bankrupt, and here he began to show serious interest and talent in Nihonga, Japanese-style painting. In 1911 he was introduced to Kaburagi Kiyokata, a renowned painter, and became Kiyokata's student. It was Kiyokata that gave Hajime his artist's name, Shinsui. When Shinsui was eighteen years old, his paintings were seen by the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo at an exhibition at Kiyokata's art school.Ukiyo-e itself is a genre of woodblock prints and paintings that was produced in Japan from the 17th century to the 19th century. The prints were very popular amongst the Japanese merchants and the middle class of the time.

Theology in the Mode of Monk

Raymond,Carr  著
Ingram 出版
2024/11/21 出版

This captivating study engages two of the most influential theologians of the twentieth century: Karl Barth, the Swiss Protestant theologian who constructed his theology "from above" and engaged the powers in the background of Nazi Germany, and James H. Cone, the father of Black Theology in America, who constructed his theology "from below" and confronted white racism--the most intractable issue in America's history. In this three-volume project, Carr employs the aesthetic thinking of the jazz legend Thelonious Monk to reconceptualize, restructure, and advance the theologies of Barth and Cone. This first volume appeals to the Bebop tune "Epistrophy" as the analogical framework for (re)conceptualizing the historical form and hermeneutical backgrounds of Karl Barth and James H. Cone. Monk's mode of musical thinking establishes the aesthetic theological architecture Carr uses to reiterate and reimagine the revolutionary theological contributions of Barth and Cone.

Flesh and Fabric

Villa I Tatti 出版
2024/11/21 出版

Although the works of Pietro Lorenzetti (1280-1348) rank among the most famous of the fourteenth century, one of his panels, a small Crucifixion, has remained largely overlooked, despite its unique imagery. Combining three temporal horizons--past, present, and eschatological future--within an unparalleled allegorical presentation of the Crucifixion, this panel grants precedence to Clare of Assisi over Francis, founder of the Franciscan Order. Probably created for a nun, Lorenzetti's painting turns abstruse allegory into a vehicle for a self-conscious meditation on the power of painting itself. In Flesh and Fabric: The Raiment of the Passion in a Crucifixion by Pietro Lorenzetti, Jeffrey F. Hamburger explores the historical context of this panel as well as the subtleties of Pietro's painting technique and iconographic imagination, enriching not only our understanding of one of the most innovative artists of the Trecento but also of Italian painting during one of its most generative periods. In addition to an iconographical analysis and historical contextualization of the panel, this volume includes a technical analysis that reveals the subtleties of the painting's technique and reconstructs its original format, demonstrating that, from the start, this panel was a freestanding devotional image.

Art Against Authoritarianism in Southwest Asia and North Africa

Tijen,Tunali  著
Ingram 出版
2024/11/21 出版

Over the past decade, there has been a burgeoning interest in the realm of art activism within the Southwest Asia and North Africa region, shedding light on the political implications of aesthetic representation. Nevertheless, a critical inquiry into how political aesthetics can formulate both discernible and imperceptible resistance strategies in response to resurging authoritarianism and counter-revolution after the 2011 uprisings in the region remains conspicuously absent. This book delves into a comprehensive examination of diverse art forms, ranging from street art and cinema to performance art, as well as music and theatre, scrutinizing the manifestations of aesthetic resilience at the epicentre of the political resistance against oppression and authoritarianism in Sudan, Iran, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Lebanon, Yemen and Syria. The editors employ a multifaceted approach to investigate artistic activism, encompassing analysis of visibility, ephemerality, and speech within the public sphere, the establishment and perpetuation of collective transnational solidarities, the portrayal of suppressed identities and narratives, and the innovation of alternative mechanisms for producing and disseminating art.

Material Selves

Ingram 出版
2024/11/20 出版

What do Persian robes of honour, 20th-century still-life painting, fur garments, and 18th-century porcelain all have in common? Prized, possessed and modelled, they highlight the deep connections we share with cultural objects. Establishing new connections between people and things via artistic media and material culture, this highly interdisciplinary volume brings together both established and emerging scholars in the fields of art history, material culture, museum and heritage studies and literary studies to investigate the intersection of the personal with the material. Raising vital questions of cultural identity, belonging and selfhood, Material Selves is the first book of its kind to consider the relationship between people and things across transcultural and transhistorical contexts. It employs innovative methodologies across ten chapters and critically expands on current models for understanding the dynamic relationship between people and things by tracing the central role objects have played in the construction, creation and performance of identity throughout history. Structured around four key sections exploring biography and narrative; adornment and ornament; reclamation and intervention; and subjects and objects, the volume presents a global selection of case studies that explore, amongst other things, Margaret Olley's enduring fame, the significance of the Khil'a in Safavid Persia and early modern Europe, and 17th-century French painter Charles LeBrun's royal portraiture. Fusing these with contemporary theories of identity, the contributors provide analyses informed by posthumanism, the environmental humanities, race and gender. At the same time, they confront vital questions of identity, agency, and materiality, and highlight the way in which we use objects to tell stories, construct myths and make sense of our place in the world. In doing so, the book illuminates a wide range of cultural and chronological settings whilst giving close attention to the mobility of people and things between, across, and through time and place.

Pragmatics studies the aims of communication by revealing the speaker's intentions indirectly through the statements made. It focuses on a study of the processes by which we understand what is implied. It is related to the procedure used by director and illustrator Hayao Miyazaki to create visual narratives, taken from the making of his animated film entitled: Chihiro's Journey (2001) by Ghibli Studios. Inspired by the knowledge he acquires in the social sphere, in folk tales, in the interactions between individuals, he goes on to shape his narratives.

Sing a New Song

Ingram 出版
2024/11/20 出版

A beautifully illustrated art historical reference book which explores in depth the central role of the Book of Psalms in the Middle Ages from the sixth to the sixteenth centuries.Traditionally ascribed to King David, the Hebrew Book of Psalms is a varied collection of sacred poems that constitute the longest and most popular book of the Bible. Offering inspiration, hope, and comfort to people for thousands of years, these verses include expressions of lament and loss, petitions and confessions, as well as exclamations of joy and thanksgiving--universal themes that speak to what it means to be human.Sing a New Song: The Psalms in Medieval Art and Life traces the impact of the psalms on men and women of medieval Europe from the sixth to the sixteenth century. It encompasses daily practices and performance, as well as the creation of Psalters (Books of Psalms), some of the most richly ornamented manuscripts ever made. Life, liturgy, and art in the Middle Ages and Renaissance were suffused by psalms. They were present at the beginning of one's life and at the end: children learned to read from psalms, and the dying were comforted by their recitation. Exploring the integration of the psalms in medieval life, this stunningly illustrated and comprehensive publication charts the ubiquitous presence of this poetry in people's lives for over a millennium.Published to accompany an exhibition at the Morgan Library & Museum, New York through January 11, 2026.Features works from the Morgan Library & Museum; Walters Art Museum; Indiana University; Coptic Museum, Cairo; Corpus Christi College and Trinity College, Cambridge; Harvard University; Mus矇e Cond矇, Chantilly; University of Chicago; Dombibliothek, Cologne; Kongelige Bibliotek, Copenhagen; National Museum of Ireland; Dombibliothek, Hildesheim; Israel Museum; Universitaire Bibliotheken, Leiden; Lincoln Cathedral; British Library; J. Before the Applause

Joe,Desensi  著
Ingram 出版
2024/11/19 出版

Heralded as "witty, wise, accessible, practical, vibrant" - "a roadmap for leaders, artists, and project managers," "a true breath of fresh air," and "an outstanding performance."There are many steps between CREATION and STANDING OVATION. And most artists don't know how to navigate them. Readers of Before the Applause will have a leg up on "breaking a leg" thanks to the practical tools and tips - and the inspiring and entertaining stories and illustrations - in this definitive guidebook on project management for artists.Behind every great rock star (or playwright, sculptor, filmmaker, painter, actor, or comedian) is (or should be!) a great project manager. Creative genius without project-management chops and leadership skills is a recipe for unfinished art - for "starving artists" and dreams deferred.Albums don't manage themselves. Art exhibits don't happen by happenstance. Concert tours and stage plays don't come together without goal setting, communication, collaboration, resource allocation, budgeting, scheduling, and risk management. It's one thing to have a creative MUSE and it's another thing to have a creative project MANAGER; it's magic to have both."When I set out to write my one-woman show, I didn't know what I didn't know. Had this wonderful book been available to me, it would have been a tremendous help in bringing my vision to the stage. A great, entertaining read ..."Breeda Kelly Miller, Playwright/Actor/Producer, Mrs. Kelly's Journey HomeIn their work with musicians and other artists, co-authors Joe DeSensi (the systems guru) and Joe Hanna (the rock star) observed that while many artists had great ideas, good intentions, true talent, and even multiple resources to start and complete projects, very few artists were able to see those projects through to completion. Why? Because most artists don't know the first thing about project management. In the colorful, illustrated pages of Before the Applause: Why Artists Need to Be Good Project Managers, readers will discover the secrets of success and learn how to maximize impact while staying within budget. The book's big lesson? Project management for artistic projects doesn't have to be complicated - with the right tips and tools, it can be simple! Before the Applause focuses on a simple, 5-step approach to getting from "brilliant ideas" to big applause: Imagine It, Plan It, Do It, Track It, and Finish It.This book will help you do the right things first, get the best effort out of your team, communicate efficiently and effectively, and, most importantly, finish your art and get it to the world - sooner, rather than "someday."Complete with checklists, project-management "hacks," practical exercises, reflection questions, cautionary tales, and inspiring insights ... and with a foreword by Vin Morreale, Jr., author, playwright, and screenwriter.

Good Swastika, Bad Swastika

Ingram 出版
2024/11/17 出版

The swastika is a graphic figure that has been both revered and reviled in the world. Revered as a holy symbol in India and other cultures in the East. Reviled as a symbol associated with cultural elitism, genocide, warfare, and plunder in the West. However, there are four main swastikas. The arms can turn right or left. The orientation can be to the cardinal directions (the sides being north-south-east-west); or can be to the intermediate directions (the sides being northeast-southwest-southeast-northwest). The directions in the Vedic tradition have specific qualities that represent the eight primary functions in life. Using these qualities, it is possible to obtain a detailed symbolic value for each of the four versions of the swastika. One swastika represents the Vedic ideal, fulfilling all aspects of life in progress and fulfillment. One seems to represent capitalistic society. A third exhibits the values of nomadic groups. The fourth has the qualities that were seen in the Nazi regime in Germany, where it was its ever-present insignia. Readers can judge for themselves the validity of the logic and the conclusions presented. At the very least, the book gives an opportunity to think on the ways life can be organized and lived.

Amalia Mesa-Bains

Ingram 出版
2024/11/16 出版

The life and work of a celebrated multimedia artist, cultural and feminist theorist, and community organizer Amalia Mesa-Bains has garnered international recognition for multimedia installations that evoke the Chicana experience. This lively book recounts pivotal moments from her life, career, and collaborations, examining the intertwined worlds of Latinx culture, social movements, and contemporary art. Esteemed cultural historian Tom獺s Ybarra-Frausto relates Mesa-Bains's life to contemporary events and her artistic and intellectual production to her concept of domesticana (a feminist interpretation of rasquachismo) and her mestiza identity. He demonstrates how the Chicano Movement attuned the artist to her Mexican heritage, sparking her interest in the traditional home altars that became the aesthetic and cultural inspiration for her installation art. Employing detailed descriptions and analyses of key works, this book is an "art historical biography-memoire," offering a uniquely personal understanding of Mesa-Bains's prolific artistic practice and situating her life and art in the cultural and political milieu of the United States since the 1960s. Distributed for UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center Press.

Theology in the Mode of Monk

Raymond,Carr  著
Ingram 出版
2024/11/16 出版

This captivating study engages two of the most influential theologians of the twentieth century: Karl Barth, the Swiss Protestant theologian, who constructed his theology "from above" and engaged the powers in the background of Nazi Germany, and James H. In this second volume, Carr appeals to Monk's tune "'Round Midnight" as the analogical framework for articulating the meaning between Christ, the cantus firmus, and the sociopolitical histories of Karl Barth and James Cone. Monk's encouragement to "improvise on the melody" is heard as the melodic foundation for a new form of christological reflection.

Design Dilemma

Birkhauser 出版
2024/11/16 出版

Year of the Bath

Devibook 出版
2024/11/15 出版

In Year of the Bath, artist Gyan Shrosbree has created paintings emulating a variety of iconographies; boots, houseplants, ladies, and landline telephones, which carry their own signature personalities. During the course of this show Shrosbree has invited the curation of the work to be rearranged, enabling a process of storytelling. This engages the paintings to interact with each other as icons or props on the stage. Compositional friendships begin shifting and emerging into new conversations. Narratives unfold during the process of playing within the repetition of the forms enlivened by their own notability. These paintings are stars in performance. Through setting the stage the paintings begin living their own life out of the control of their maker. In a time where our own roles have been effectively reimagined, this performance recalls our own potentials within limitations.

Color and Culture

John,Gage  著
Thames & H 出版
2024/11/15 出版

What does the language of color tell us? Where does one color begin and another end? Is it a radiant visual stimulus, an intangible function of light, or a material substance to be molded and arrayed? Color is fundamental to art, yet so diverse that it has hardly ever been studied in a comprehensive way. Art historian John Gage considers every conceivable aspect of the subject in this groundbreaking analysis of color in Western culture, from the ancient Greeks to the late twentieth century.Gage describes the first theories of color, articulated by Greek philosophers, and subsequent attempts by the Romans and their Renaissance disciples to organize it systematically or endow it with symbolic power. He unfolds its religious significance and its use in heraldry, as well as how Renaissance artists approached color with the help of alchemists. He explores the analysis of the spectrum undertaken by Isaac Newton and continued in the nineteenth century by artists such as Georges Seurat, traces the influence of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's color theory, and considers the extraordinary theories and practices that attempted to unite color and music or make color into an entirely abstract language of its own.A seminal undertaking to suggest answers to many perennial questions about the role of color in Western art and thought, Color and Culture throws fresh light on the hidden meanings of many familiar masterpieces.
