An independent research library founded in 1731 and specializing in American society and culture from the 17th through the early 20th centuries, the Library Company has collected books and graphics throughout its almost 300-year history. Today, the Library is faced with the task of finding new and better ways of advancing understanding and engaging public awareness of the complex histories of these challenging collection items, while still holding space for their historical significance.
Edward Augustus Brackett
The first comprehensive biography of the 19th century polymath Edward Augustus Brackett, a Boston based artist, abolitionist, spiritualist, poet and conservationist. Because of his involvement with figures like John Brown, Edmonia Lewis, William James, William Cullen Bryan, Alfred Russel Wallace and William Lloyd Garrison, this biography is also a social history of the conflict torn 19th century America. Its author, Eleanor Heartney, is a prominent commentator on contemporary art who is also Brackett's great great granddaughter.
