Psurrealistic Psalms
The 150 Psalms of the Holy Bible contain some of the most marvelous, curious, and sometimes disturbing imagery in all of Scripture. Both book and exhibition make the case that the visual culture of Knoxville and its Appalachian environs is far more sophisticated, diverse, nuanced, and connected than most believe. KMA curator Stephen Wicks sets out the rationale behind Higher Ground and introduces the broad themes around which the book and exhibition are organized. Jack Neely, executive director of the Knoxville History Project, assembles a fascinating and richly detailed history of the visual arts in Knoxville. "Joseph and Beauford Delaney'' celebrates the achievements of two prodigious Black artists who left their Knoxville hometown to achieve national and international prominence, with a particularly rich selection from Beauford's Paris years of the 1950s and 1960s. "The Knoxville 7'' focuses on a progressive group of disparate artists united by their common interest in cultivating Modernism in local soil in the 1950s and 1960s. A final section is dedicated to the work of Black artist Bessie Harvey, an East Tennessee visionary who rose from poverty to achieve national recognition late in the twentieth century.

A renowned 'artist and wood engraver', as the blue plaque recently erected in her memory says, Lady Mabel Annesley's printmaking was compared to that of William Blake. Forever gracious and enthusiastic, she shared an early twentieth-century milieu with other equally respected wood engravers such as Robert Gibbings and Eric Gill. Her work is represented in the collections of the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Ulster Museum and the national galleries of Canada and New Zealand. This book is a long-overdue acknowledgement of the lasting impression the ever-modest and dutiful Lady Mabel, daughter of the fifth earl of Annesley of Castlewellan, County Down, made on the Irish, British and international art worlds. In addition to recounting Lady Mabel Annesley's fascinating career as an artist and aristocrat, this book outlines the contribution of family and friends to her artistic development. She counted among her friends important artists and poets such as William Conor and Richard Rowley, whose lives and work cast light on her absorbing story. So, indeed, do the life and work of her cousin, Percy French, whose songs brilliantly reflected the Irish social scene of the early twentieth century. On her death in 1959, The Times of London's obituary gratefully recognised Mabel Annesley's 'intense and profound feeling for beauty in nature and art' - a fitting epitaph to the work of a distinguished and important Irish female artist.

Trauma + Cultural Pride = Art of HealingAccording to the 2010 Census, Vallejo, California has the most racially diverse zip codes in the U.S. As a third-generation Korean Chinese American growing up in 1960s-1980s Vallejo, the Elizabeth Ching's lenses have been shaped by race and resilience. Now-defunct Mare Island Naval Shipyard brought good paying work during World War II; this was why so many different racial and ethnic groups lived in this small city, current population of 122,000. After the closing of the Naval Shipyard, hospitals are the largest employers in Vallejo. The flip side of trauma can be healing or trauma-informed art. Ernest J. Gaines, author of "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman," lived much of his life in Vallejo. Perhaps that is why so many hip-hop artists like E-40, Baby Bash, SOB x RBE, R & B artist, H.E.R., plus athletes C.C. Sabathia, C.J. Anderson, and Natalie Coughlin are Vallejoans. "Strength through Diversity" is on a plaque at the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum, yet our current society is much more segregated than during the author's youth. The ten exits in Vallejo are memory markers of the intersections of race and resilience of each of the four racial groups which are almost equally divided to comprise approximately 25% of Vallejo: African American, Asian American/Pacific Islander, Latinx, and White populations. Those ten exits from the I-80 Freeway East, serve as historical markers of growing up in 1960s to the 1980s in Vallejo. Elizabeth Ching identifies as an Asian American who is not on the Black-White Dichotomy of how Race is often discussed. She offers essays, poems, paintings, and drawings which deal with identity, race, health disparities, and making art as a survival skill in navigating challenges as a person of color in the U.S.Vallejo is a microcosm of the U.S. because of its racial diversity.
