Foundational Description of the Art of Fencing
In his short life, master cutler and Freifechter Joachim Meyer appears to have had quite a successful career as a fencing master, teaching craftsmen and noblemen alike while also authoring at least four different fencing treatises (and possibly more). His works became renowned far outside of his own nation and were copied by other authors for over a hundred years after his death. This book contains Dr. Rebecca Garber's entirely new translation of Meyer's longest and most developed treatise, Foundational Description of the Free, Knightly, and Noble Art of Fencing, published in 1570. It teaches complex and sophisticated methods for using all the typical weapons of his day, beginning with the two-handed sword prized by the tradition of Johannes Liechtenauer, then showing how traditional German fencing should be applied to the eastern European dusack and the Mediterranean rapier which had become popular as sidearms, and finally covering the dagger and polearms that were commonly used in the militias of the Imperial Free Cities. To aid in the study of this important work, it has been separated into two volumes. In Volume 1, Michael Chidester's transcription of the original German text is included alongside the translation, and hundreds of footnotes have been added throughout. In addition, Christopher VanSlambrouck provides an exhaustive introduction to Meyer and the world that he inhabited. In Volume 2, the 62 elaborate Figures created by the workshop of Hans Christoph Stimmer are printed in two different formats-a set that were lavishly painted in 1574, and a black and white set with the backgrounds removed for clarity-along with compilations of all references to each Figure in the text. The illustrations from the M羹nchen, Lund, and Rostock manuscripts are also included in appendices for reference, and an introduction by Michael Chidester describes Meyer's book itself and the process of creating books in the 16th century. This book will prove to be an important resource for any student of medieval or early modern fencing.
Music Generations in the Digital Age
What do we do when we listen? The act of engagement with music in everyday life may seem simple on the surface but participation, interpretation, circulation and cultural production in the digital age are more complex and entangled than ever before. It is especially so in Japan, with its vast multimedia idol and vocaloid industries. This unique ethnographic work at the intersection of cultural, media and music studies covers a wide spectrum of music-related activities embedded in the daily lives of two Japanese cohorts. The varied case studies, including teen idol groups and virtual idols, aid the detailed examination of the relation between music, generation, and society.

Art and the Home
Our homes contain us, but they are also within us. They can represent places to be ourselves, to recollect childhood memories, or to withdraw into adult spaces of intimacy; they can be sites for developing rituals, family relationships, and acting out cultural expectations. Like the personal, social, and cultural elements out of which they are constructed, homes can be not only comforting, but threatening too. The home is a rich theme running through post-war western art, and it continues to engage contemporary artists today - yet it has been the subject of relatively little critical writing. Art and the Home: Comfort, Alienation and the Everyday is the first single-authored, up-to-date book on the subject. Imogen Racz provides a theme-led discussion about how the physical experience of the dwelling space and the psychological complexities of the domestic are manifested in art, focusing mainly on sculpture, installation and object-based practice; discussing the work and ideas of artists as diverse as Louise Bourgeois, Gordon Matta-Clark, George Segal and Cornelia Parker within their artistic and cultural contexts.

Under Blue Cup
A personal journey leads a celebrated critic to discover "knights of the medium," contemporary artists who battle the aesthetic meaninglessness of the post-medium condition. In Under Blue Cup, Rosalind Krauss explores the relation of aesthetic mediums to memory--her own memory having been severely tested by a ruptured aneurysm that temporarily washed away much of her short-term memory. (The title, Under Blue Cup, comes from the legend on a flash card she used as a mnemonic tool during cognitive therapy.) Krauss emphasizes the medium as a form of remembering; contemporary artists in what she terms the "post-medium" condition reject that scaffolding. Krauss explains the historical emergence of the post-medium condition and describes alternatives to its aesthetic meaninglessness, examining works by "knights of the medium"--contemporary artists who extend the life of the specific medium. These artists--including Ed Ruscha, William Kentridge, Sophie Calle, Harun Farocki, Christian Marclay, and James Coleman--reinstate the recursive rules of a modernist medium by inventing what Krauss terms new technical supports, battling the aesthetic meaninglessness of the post-medium condition. The "technical support" is an underlying ground for aesthetic practice that supports the work of art as canvas supported oil paint. The technical support for Ruscha's fascination with gas stations and parking lots is the automobile; for Kentridge, the animated film; for Calle, photojournalism; for Coleman, a modification of PowerPoint; for Marclay, synchronous sound. Their work, Krauss argues, recuperates more than a century of modernist practice. The work of the post-medium condition--conceptual art, installation, and relational aesthetics--advances the idea that the "white cube" of the museum or gallery wall is over. Krauss argues that the technical support extends the life of the white cube, restoring autonomy and specificity to the work of art.
Moving without a Body
A radically empirical exploration of movement and technology and the transformations of choreography in a digital realm. Digital technologies offer the possibility of capturing, storing, and manipulating movement, abstracting it from the body and transforming it into numerical information. In Moving without a Body, Stamatia Portanova considers what really happens when the physicality of movement is translated into a numerical code by a technological system. Drawing on the radical empiricism of Gilles Deleuze and Alfred North Whitehead, she argues that this does not amount to a technical assessment of software's capacity to record motion but requires a philosophical rethinking of what movement itself is, or can become. Discussing the development of different audiovisual tools and the shift from analog to digital, she focuses on some choreographic realizations of this evolution, including works by Loie Fuller and Merce Cunningham. Throughout, Portanova considers these technologies and dances as ways to think--rather than just perform or perceive--movement. She distinguishes the choreographic thought from the performance: a body performs a movement, and a mind thinks or choreographs a dance. Similarly, she sees the move from analog to digital as a shift in conception rather than simply in technical realization. Analyzing choreographic technologies for their capacity to redesign the way movement is thought, Moving without a Body offers an ambitiously conceived reflection on the ontological implications of the encounter between movement and technological systems.
The Films of Nicolas Winding Refn
Ebook available to libraries exclusively as part of the JSTOR Path to Open initiative. This critical study engages with the films of the Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, from his first feature Pusher (1996) up to and including Copenhagen Cowboy (2023), Refn's TV series for Netflix, considered here as a long-form, auteur work comparable to David Lynch's mini-series Twin Peaks: The Return (2017).By focusing on the treatment of genre, gender and glamour in Refn's work, Sweeney argues that the director is often misunderstood as a purveyor of 'macho' films when, in fact, his representations of masculinity are much more complex and layered.'Drawing on a range of critical theory, most prominently the work of Paul B Preciado, and building on the existing criticism of Refn's work by Justin Vicari, Susanne Kappesser and Sofia Glasl, among others, this book provides a comprehensive and accessible analysis of Refn's oeuvre.
Animate(d) Architecture
At their peak, architectural marvels such as the Sagrada Fam穩lia, the Tower of London, the Mosque-Cathedral of C籀rdoba, and the Eiffel tower, had a combined annual visit of almost 16.4 million people. The animated icebound castle in Disney's (2019) Frozen had 116.4 million views, from one single YouTube trailer, in less than 24 hours. The spaces of such massively consumed animation have for generations informed the architectural imagination of people across the globe and from very early in their lives. Yet, not only have the architectural disciplines remained rather absent in the design of these massively consumed spaces, architectural theory has likewise failed to articulate a framework to approach the architecture of animation. To address this void, this book offers an interdisciplinary approach to survey the role of space in animation, including in creating humorous moments in early cartoon shorts, generating action and suspense in Japanese anime, and even stimulating erotic pleasure in pornographic Hentai. Exploring the imagined architecture of animation, from early motion picture to digital animation and from computer graphics to game engines, offers an analytical frame to reconceptualize space. An Open Access version of Yuko Yoshida's chapter 'Animated Embodiments of Witnessing: An Architectural Narrative of Silence' is available on the Liverpool University Press website.
Parisiennes: City Women in French Cinema
Ebook available to libraries exclusively as part of the JSTOR Path to Open initiative.Parisiennes: City Women in French Cinema examines French films that screen women as main characters in the city of Paris from 1957 to the present day. The book investigates how women perceive, use, and inhabit the city of Paris on-screen, showing that the strong connection between the city and its women offers a strategic site to examine gender in urban space in cinema. Close readings of key popular movies, art-house films, and films directed by women reveal that the on-screen interactions between female protagonists and city spaces are crucial to understanding women's place(s) in Paris in different social and historical contexts. Moving beyond the mythical Parisienne and the celebrated fl璽neuse, the book analyzes the Parisiennes as city women to capture the interactive exchange between female protagonists and urban spaces, focusing on spatial perception, everyday urban practices, and lived experience. Most importantly, these on-screen Parisiennes show women's lives and struggles in the city and imagine women asserting the right to be residents of Paris, as city women. The Parisiennes as city women screen women who aim to walk freely the city streets and imagine Paris on their own terms, providing a more egalitarian model to the off-screen city.
Quebec Cinema in the 21st Century
This collection of ten chapters and three original interviews with Qu矇b矇cois filmmakers focuses on the past two decades of Quebec cinema and takes an in-depth look at a (primarily) Montreal-based filmmaking industry whose increasingly diverse productions continue to resist the hegemony of Hollywood and to exist as a visible and successful hub of French-language - and ever more multilingual - cinema in North America. This volume picks up where Bill Marshall's 2001 Quebec National Cinema ends to investigate the inherently global nature of Quebec's film industry and cinematic output since the beginning of the new millennium. Through their analyses of contemporary films (Une colonie, Avant les rues, Bon cop, bad cop, Les Affam矇s, Tom ? la ferme, Uvanga, among others), directors (including Xavier Dolan, Denis C繫t矇, Sophie Desrape, Chlo矇 Robichaud, Jean-Marc Vall矇e, and Monia Chokri) and genres (such as the buddy comedy and the zombie film), our authors examine the growing tension between Quebec cinema as a "national cinema" and as an art form that reflects the transnationalism of today's world, a new form of fluidity of individual experiences, and an increasing on-screen presence of Indigenous subjects, both within and outside the borders of the province. The book concludes with specially conducted interviews with filmmakers Denis Chouinard, Bachir Bensadekk, and Marie-H矇l癡ne Cousineau, who provide their views and insights on contemporary Quebec filmmaking.

Transmodern
How can we reconfigure our picture of modern art after the postcolonial turn without simply adding regional art histories to the Eurocentric canon? Transmodern examines the global dimension of modern art by tracing the crossroads of different modernisms in Asia, Europe and the Americas. Featuring case studies in Indian modernism, the Harlem Renaissance and post-war abstraction, it demonstrates the significance of transcultural contacts between artists from both sides of the colonial divide. The book argues for the need to study non-western avant-gardes and Black avant-gardes within the west as transmodern counter-currents to mainstream modernism. It situates transcultural art practices from the 1920s to the 1960s within the framework of anti-colonial movements and in relation to contemporary transcultural thinking that challenged colonial concepts of race and culture with notions of syncretism and hybridity.
Innovative Technology in Art Conservation
Innovative Technology in Art Conservation provides one of the first ever critical assessments of innovation in conservation science and questions what role it should play in conservation and conservation ethics.Written in language understandable for the non-technical reader, the book begins with a brief history of so-called science-based conservation, which is based on chemistry, physics and engineering, and examines how it influences conservation ethics and conservation decisions. It considers the concepts of originality and original appearance, and how people see and perceive objects, looking in particular at the results of the relatively new technology of eye-tracking. Wei then moves on to critically examine advanced technologies such as colour modelling, hyperspectral imaging, texture mapping, virtual retouching and digital reproductions and considers what they offer for determining original appearance of artworks and other cultural heritage objects. The book concludes with some reflections on the future of conservation and science-based conservation, calling for more thoughtful consideration of what it is that conservation scientists are offering, and why and for whom it is being offered.Innovative Technology in Art Conservation is essential reading for academics and students working in conservation and conservation science. The book will also be of interest to the international community of conservators and cultural heritage professionals who must make decisions about whether to use advanced technologies in their practice.

Stereograms
Stereograms are 2D images that hide a 3D image inside. These images are created using a technique called stereopsis, which is the natural process by which our eyes perceive depth. Each eye sees the world from a slightly different angle, and our brain combines these two perspectives to create a three-dimensional image. Stereograms mimic this process, presenting a slightly different image to each eye.The history of stereograms dates back to the early 19th century. Sir Charles Wheatstone, a British scientist, carried out pioneering research into binocular vision, which led to the development of stereopsis and eventually the creation of stereograms. However, it wasn't until the 20th century that stereograms became popular thanks to the work of Bela Julesz, a Hungarian scientist. Julesz created the first stereoscopic stereograms using computers, allowing previously unseen accuracy and visual quality.Stereograms are a unique visual art form that challenges our perception and immerses us in a world of depth and dimension. Their rich history and ability to captivate people of all ages make them a timeless form of entertainment. We invite you to challenge your senses so that the next time you find yourself in front of a stereogram, you will take a moment to look beyond the surface and discover the hidden world waiting to be revealed. In this way you will train your brain to interpret

The Elements - Aether
Greek mythology believed that the Aether was the God of light. It was also believed that the light could be manipulated through the use of gravity. The gravity could be directed with that of a virtual tube or writing instrument to create words, letters or drawings. It is the author's opinion that he now has proof or evidence of the existence of the Aether. The images contained within this visual publication are a representation of the evidence. You are invited to delve deep into the multi-layered imagery inside the pages of The Elements-Aether. The God of the heavens is magical and beyond comprehension. There is nothing that He cannot accomplish. His abilities are beyond what we could ever imagine or dream of. The infinite beauty, creativity and thoughts of our Adonai will never be contained or restrained within the dome of our cranium. He is the Alpha and Omega, The Beginning and the End. He is not limited by time, space or matter. Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
The Elements - Fire
I Justyn first started photographing the Fire while living with his good friend Hans Schmitt, one of his best friends. He is the owner of Dance Boulevard, located in San Jose California, and a Champion Dancer. They would sit on the back patio and enjoy food, drink and discuss all matters of life and existence. During one such evening Justyn felt the spirit beckoning him to photograph the flames of the fire pit. While doing this, he found that the flames would move in patterns, almost as if dancing before his camera. He has captured over 20,000 fire images to date. Please note that the fire images have not been enhanced or photoshopped in any way. As with the other elements each viewer sees the images from their own personal life perspective what you see is what you see. Which is ultimately captivating and fascinating! We look forward to discovering what it is you see in the fire. Please study each image for at least 33 seconds to see them come alive.

Inclusive Design and Accessibility Paradigms in Lebanon
This book describes the disability rights movement that started in the USA and its influence on the disability rights movement in Lebanon, which has led to the endorsement of the Lebanese Disability Act 220/2000. The book introduces the reader to the Lebanese Disability Act 220/ 2000, its definition of disability, and its relation to the medical and social models of disabilities and then articulate the Act articles. Then, it defines the inclusive design paradigm that acknowledges the needs of all people at each stage of their life cycle and presents the difference between inclusive design and accessibility and disability notions. Moreover, the book reviews the different international accessible design standards (American and French) that are adopted in Lebanon with the absence of a nationalized Lebanese design standard and its effect on eliminating barriers and enhancing accessibility at university buildings. Besides, the book presents students' experiences and their satisfaction with the university built environments. 6 university buildings case studies at the American University of Beirut are assessed and analysed to check whether they adopt the inclusive design approach and then propose inclusive design solutions for both heritage and modern university buildings. What makes the book unique is its combination of empirical and theoretical application of inclusive design. The last section, reflects the author's inclusive design teaching pedagogy. In this section, the author shares samples of students' class design project and provides recommendations and guidelines for teaching inclusive design so it becomes mainstream.
Jean-Jacques Lebel and French Happenings of the 1960s
Combining a broad overview of Jean-Jacques Lebel's coming-of-age among Surrealists and his rupture with the movement, Laurel Jean Fredrickson focuses on two landmark happenings in this book: the first, "Funeral of the Thing of Tinguely" (1960), and the most scandalous, "120 Minutes dedicated to the Divine Marquis" (1966). This study illustrates the development and significance of French happenings in relation to cultural and political changes of the 1960s. Research in Lebel's archives, and others like the Archives nationale d'outre-mer are indispensable in the telling of this extraordinary historical and theoretical narrative. It illuminates sensitive, often veiled dimensions of postwar French society, from torture during the Algerian War, to government censorship, to the sexual politics of nudity in art. This volume shows how Lebel synthesized the lessons of Dada and surrealism and 1960s experimentalism, electrified by political radicalism, to participate in shaping the erotics and forms of revolution in May 1968.
