The Girl Prince
In February 1910, the future Virginia Woolf played the most famous practical joke in British military history. Blackening her face and masquerading as an Abyssinian prince, the young writer and her friends conned their way onto HMS Dreadnought, the Empire's most powerful battleship. The stunt made headlines around the world, embarrassed the Admiralty, and provoked debate in Parliament. But who was the 'girl prince' unidentified at the time, and what was she doing there? The Girl Prince intertwines three fascinating stories: a scandalous prank and its afterlife; Woolf's ideas about race and empire; and the actual lived experience of Black people in Edwardian Britain, from real princes to Caribbean writers and South African activists. Using letters, diaries, reporting and newly discovered archives, Danell Jones describes an extraordinary chain of events, exploring why a boundary-pushing novelist once pulled a bigoted blackface prank, and what it tells us--about Woolf's Britain and Woolf's work. This is a tantalisingly fresh take on an iconic writer and her deeply problematic stunt.

The Renaissance
Walter Pater's enduring work, The Renaissance, ignited impassioned debates and earned profound admiration for its distinctive critique of renowned artists from the French and Italian Renaissance. In eloquent and vibrant prose, Pater explores the creations of luminaries like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Botticelli, offering unexpected, idiosyncratic, and sometimes almost erotic insights. His audacious insistence on pleasure as one of life's primary aims sparked contrasting reactions; some viewed it as a license for hedonism, while others valued his daring perspectives on the appreciation of art. This book, as much a treasure for art and literature enthusiasts as for cultural critics, maintains its timeless allure. Pater's study of beauty, pleasure, and artistic ecstasy transcends epochs and continues to exude freshness, vitality, and contagious enthusiasm. This Warbler Classics edition is an unabridged republication of the fourth and final edition of the work and includes the original annotations, an in-depth essay on the influence of Walter Pater on Oscar Wilde, and a detailed biographical timeline.
Truth, Art and Reconciliation
The "Winds of Change" is a series of watercolour paintings by Daniel Elliott - a Stz'uminus Elder who is a healer and teacher in First Nations communities. The paintings depict the beauty and power of Indigenous culture and community, along with the ongoing trauma of colonization. This book includes all paintings in the series, along with Elliott's own story, and his powerful insights on the path of truth and reconciliation. Elliott began studying watercolour painting as a young boy. He found that artmaking provided access to altered states of consciousness. Art became a crucial way for him to build capacity to live with purpose and choice, despite the intergenerational trauma, sexual abuse, family violence and relentless racism he experienced. He writes, "If you can access this alternate consciousness I have been describing, the consequences of trauma are not linear or predictable. Hopelessness is not inevitable. We can feel the grief, and understand the impact of ongoing violence, and stay with it long enough to choose the next right thing." In the introduction to Truth, Art and Reconciliation, Caffyn Jesse describes this book as "both challenging and comforting." She says, "This book asks us to understand many dimensions of Indigenous trauma. It invites us to feel our own - and each other's - traumas more intimately. It also opens new possibilities for healing, alternate ways of seeing, and transformative well-being."
Durational Cinema
This book argues for a durational cinema that is distinct from slow cinema, and outlines the history of its three main waves: the New York avant-garde of the 1960s, the European art cinema in the years after 1968, and the international cinema of gallery spaces as well as film festivals since the 1990s. Figures studied include Andy Warhol, Ken Jacobs, Chantal Akerman, Marguerite Duras, Claude Lanzmann, James Benning, Kevin Jerome Everson, Lav Diaz, and Wang Bing.Durational cinema is predominantly minimal, but has from the beginning also included a more encompassing or encyclopedic kind of filmmaking. Durational cinema is characteristically representational, and converges on certain topics (the Holocaust, deindustrialization, the experience of the working class and other marginalized people), but has no one meaning, signifying differently at different moments and in different hands. Warhol's durational cinema of subtraction is quite different from Jacobs's durational cinema of socialdisgust, while Lav Diaz' durational sublime is quite different from Kevin Jerome Everson's unblinking studies of African-American working people.
Life 24x a Second
Life 24x a Second highlights the life-sustaining and life-affirming power of cinema. Author Elsie Walker pays particular attention to pedagogical practice and students' reflections on what the study of cinema has given to their lives. This book provides multiple perspectives on cinema that matters for the deepest personal and social reasons-from films that represent psychological healing in the face of individual losses to films that represent humanitarian hope in the face of global crises. Ultimately, Walker shows how cinema that moves us emotionally can move us toward a better world. Life 24x a Second makes the case for cinema as a life force in uplifting and widely relatable ways. Walker zeroes in on films that offer hope in relation to the Black Lives Matter movement (Imitation of Life, 1959, and BlacKkKlansman, 2018); contemporary feminism (Nobody Knows, 2004); rite-of-passage experiences of mortality and mourning (Ikiru, 1952, and A Star Is Born, 2018), and first-love grief (Call Me by Your Name, 2017, and Portrait of a Lady on Fire, 2019). Life 24x a Second invites readers to reflect on their own unique film-to-person encounters along with connecting them to others who love cinematic lessons for living well.

As Within So Without
Arteidolia Press 2021 "The only thing valuable in art is what cannot be explained." the painter Georges Braque once wrote in his notebook. Double bassist, improviser and composer Daniel Barbiero, in this wide ranging collection of twenty essays on music, visual art, poetry, dance-and then some--never surrenders the prospect of meaning in these encounters with the inexplicable. He follows that possibility out to what appear to be breaking points of intelligibility in artistic expression, to those junctures that refuse to deliver an explicit, translatable message, only to discover in return something extra, something unexpected and surprising that can't be experienced any other way. Barbiero reconsiders Carlo Carr獺 in "The Anti-Metaphysical Metaphysician" and Umberto Boccioni in "The Painter as Clairvoyant". He looks within the poetry and poetics of Russell Atkins and portrays the bassist Jo禱lle L矇andre. He writes about "Free Improvisation & How It Means," graphic notation as a variety of musical post-literacy, and about "Imagining Barnett Newman While Playing Long Tones." He guides us through "The Silver Age of Surrealism in Exile" and those anonymous public spaces that he identifies as atopias. Barbiero looks where we often don't, and his astute insights are continuously exhilarating and inventive.
Alien Encounters Unveiled
Embark on a captivating journey blurring the lines between speculation and reality in "Alien Encounters Unveiled." This exploration delves into the speculative realm of advanced civilizations and their intentions. It navigates the uncharted territories of hostile alien invasions, shedding light on the interplay between adaptability and foresight. Amidst this, the enduring essence of unity and collaboration surfaces as crucial survival tools. Transitioning from the speculative to the tangible, we explore resource management amid global alien threats, revealing shared values of fairness and compassion. Practical strategies, from communication to equitable distribution, bridge the gap between the hypothetical and the real. Survival tactics and diplomacy form a dual approach, mirroring humanity's multifaceted nature. As we contemplate survival skills and engage in practical solutions, the importance of understanding and practical engagement is evident. Venturing into a sinister perspective, we examine the exploitation of human religious beliefs by hostile aliens. The manipulation of faith for control underscores the significance of vigilance and critical thinking. Unity, empathy, and collective wisdom weave throughout our journey. In the face of adversity, the ability to come together, extend compassion, and communicate resonates as an essential essence. As we conclude, "Alien Encounters Unveiled" urges us to embrace a blend of speculation and practicality. From contemplating extraterrestrial encounters to envisioning survival strategies, this book equips us to navigate the unknown. Unity, empathy, and cooperation-the very foundation of humanity-guide us through the unwritten future. In unity and empathy, we find strength; in speculation and pragmatism, we unearth the tools to thrive in a world both known and unknown.
Architecture And Democracy
"Architecture and Democracy" is a thought-provoking book written by Claude Bragdon, exploring the relationship between architecture and the principles of democracy. With a keen understanding of both architectural theory and democratic ideals, Bragdon delves into the ways in which architecture can reflect and shape the social fabric of a democratic society. Bragdon explores various architectural styles, urban planning principles, and historical examples to illustrate the relationship between built environments and democratic values. He advocates for the democratization of architecture, where the design and development of public spaces are driven by the needs and aspirations of the people they serve. "Architecture and Democracy" challenges readers to reevaluate their understanding of architecture as more than just a functional endeavor, but as a means to foster social cohesion, equality, and democratic ideals. Bragdon's book serves as a call to architects, urban planners, and policymakers to consider the social and political implications of their work, and to embrace a design philosophy that prioritizes inclusivity, accessibility, and the well-being of the community.
Editing Manga
Presenting the fundamentals of manga editing and how to work with translated text in the context of a visual medium, including steps within manga workflows, common manga standards, advice about seeking manga jobs, manga-specific concepts and terminology, style guidelines that differ from prose and Chicago style, and visual aspects of manga that need to be taken into account along with the tex-tual elements. With 20 figures and two detailed translation tables, a huge amount of information is packed into this small booklet. Author Jan Mitsuko Cash is a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association and a translator of Japanese fiction who has helped bring over a hundred volumes of Japanese novels and manga into English and has assisted others with starting their careers in the localization industry. Manga are simply comics that originate from Japan. They are not limited by genre, target audience, or art style, though most manga are printed in black and white. While Western comics tend to be created by a team of people who each fulfill separate roles to write, draw, letter, and color a single comic, manga are usually credited to a single creator or a writer-artist duo who may employ a small team of uncredited assistant artists for help. Manga turnarounds are often very quick, but they are serial-ized a chapter at a time, similar to Western comics. The publication process also differs from Western releases: instead of publishing each chapter as a standalone booklet, single chapters of multiple manga series are bundled together into magazines targeted toward a demographic. Production is weekly or monthly for many of the larger magazines, and most manga are printed solely in black and white or with a limited number of color pages. Once enough chap-ters of a series have been published through serialization, they are collected and published as a print volume called a tankobon (often called tanko or tanks by English publishers). New editors will sometimes fall into the trap of only focusing on the text, but the true heart of manga is in the art! Keep the Japanese version of the manga open when looking at a script, and look out for missing translations, which are more common than you might expect. Everything an aspiring manga editor needs to know is presented concisely and with supporting images in Editing Manga: Working with Translations in a Visual Medium by Jan Mitsuko Cash.
Beyond the Sovereign Self
In Beyond the Sovereign Self Grant H. Kester continues the critique of aesthetic autonomy begun in The Sovereign Self, showing how socially engaged art provides an alternative aesthetic with greater possibilities for critical practice. Instead of grounding art in its distance from the social, Kester shows how socially engaged art, developed in conjunction with forms of social or political resistance, encourages the creative capacity required for collective political transformation. Among others, Kester analyzes the work of conceptual artist Adrian Piper, experimental practices associated with the escrache tradition in Argentina, and indigenous Canadian artists such as Nadia Myre and Mich癡le Ta簿na Audette, showing how socially engaged art catalyzes forms of resistance that operate beyond the institutional art world. From the Americas and Europe to Iran and South Africa, Kester presents a historical genealogy of recent engaged art practices rooted in a deep history of cultural production, beginning with nineteenth-century political struggles and continuing into contemporary anticolonial resistance and other social movements.
Louise Bonnet & Adam Silverman: Entanglements
Documenting an artist couple's site-specific exhibition at Frank Lloyd Wright's historic East Hollywood Hollyhock HouseDesigned by Frank Lloyd Wright as the centerpiece of an arts complex that was only partially realized, Hollyhock House has served as a home, an art club, a social club and a house museum. Entanglements, staged within the site, featured new works by a Los Angeles-based artist couple: painter Louise Bonnet (born 1970) and sculptor Adam Silverman (born 1963). Installed within the rooms and spaces of Hollyhock House, Bonnet's paintings and Silverman's ceramics engaged with the house's 100-year history as a platform for artistic experimentation. Their joint exhibition foregrounded the many entanglements of a given place, broadening perspectives on this California house and its layered history. This book documents the pieces as they were installed in Hollyhock House, and features conversations between artists, architects, chefs, friends and lovers whose work and lives are entangled in Los Angeles.

Transnationalizing Critical Intercultural Communication
The research of international topics and writing about cultural identity formations does not automatically equate to transnationalizing intercultural communication. Studies often perpetuate a hegemonic and U.S.-centric way of doing research, and by default doing intercultural communication scholarship. Thus, intercultural communication and critical intercultural communication (CIC) has not yet fully experienced a transnational turn. Instead, by considering the ideas of nation-state, nationality, and citizenship through theoretical frameworks that are developed by non-U.S.-scholars and transnational scholars within U.S. academia, this book addresses the citationality politics present in the field. While past studies of critical intercultural communication have been international in scope, with researchers from international backgrounds, their visibility and voice have remained limited in CIC. To achieve transnational inclusivity with CIC, the authors of this book advocate for the use of critical and cultural multi-methods or fusion of them or incorporation of new hybrid methodologies to answer complex, multidimensional, intersectional, and transnational issues and represent those lives and stories. Collectively, the authors address different topics that help further conceptualize transnational critical intercultural communication. They all call attention to examining global cultural disparities, mediated transnationalities, and transnational oppressive cultural and political structures. Many chapters offer narrative-based writing or autoethnographic methods to unearth these issues and spotlight oppressive structures and inequalities. This book will be essential reading for scholars of CIC and those interested in how transnational cultural practices, regulations, expectations, and limitations continuously shape and reshape the lives of transnational individuals.

The Beauty of the Flower
Blooming with rare archival images, the story of scientific botanical illustrations over nearly seven hundred years. In a world flooded with images designed to create memories, validate perceptions, and influence others, botanical illustration is about something much more focused: creating technically accurate depictions of plants. Reproductions of centuries-old botanical illustrations frequently adorn greeting cards, pottery, and advertising, to promote heritage or generate income, yet their art is scientific: intended to record, display, and transmit scientific data. The Beauty of the Flower tells the backstory of these images, showing us how scientific botanical illustrations are collaborations among artists, scientists, and publishers. It explores the evolution and interchanges of these illustrations since the mid-fifteenth century, how they have been used to communicate scientific ideas about plants, and how views of botanical imagery change. Featuring unique images rarely seen outside of specialist literature, this book reveals the fascinating stories behind these remarkable illustrations.

Many of his drawings also appeared in the Industrial Workers of the World monthly newspaper and in books such as Pablo Cruz & the American Dream, Cold Chicago: Play, and in his own books, De Kansas a Califas & Back to Chicago, Crystal-Gazing the Amber Fluid & other Wobbly poems, and Where Are Voices? The poems included in this collection reach from the late 1950's to 2000, reflecting his abilities in American Haiku, epic accounts, elegiac reflections, protest poems, love poems, and satirical pieces. He worked mainly in English but there's evidence of his own Spanish-language skills. Cort矇z also explored the traditional Mexican language Nahuatl in his later years which are also included in this collection. His artwork is held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Smithsonian and galleries in the USA and Europe. The name Koyokuikatl meaning "coyote's song" in Nahuatl first came to him while he was serving his 18-months sentence as a World War 2 conscientious objector and only ceremoniously adopted in 1982 in a Mexica ritual. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on August 13, 1923, and passed away from natural causes at home in Chicago on January 19, 2005.
