Homo Articus
Homo Articus, "human as artist," is a concept that embraces the arts as integral to human natureand encapsulates the universal idea of art as 'creative contemplation.' The contemplative artworkby Kajal Dass Beck in this book reveals an "invisible thread" across cultural boundaries andcreatively expresses the universal human need to discover and communicate thesoul of reality. Building upon previous work with traditional designs and patterns of India, thepaintings in this book engage both Eastern and Western motifs in pioneering ways. As Dass Beck says: "Aligning form with substance, soft with bold colors, natural with supernatural dimensions, and geometric with freeform design, these works cross boundaries of established genres and artistic orthodoxy yet challenge the perspectives of the most venturesome afficionado." Separate or combined, her motifs appear and reappear in various configurations of abstract expression thatprovoke an interior vision of beauty and aesthetic delight. In the spirit of creative contemplation, Homo Articus: Contemplative Art invites viewers to contemplate iconic shapes and vibrant color combinations in a diversity of formations. The work is divided into two parts, the first representing non-Indian content including American, local (New Orleans), African, abstract, and other forms of modern expression. The second part focuses on the religious and cultural landscapes of India, drawing from religious traditions, village life, legends, folklore, and music. In addition to the beautiful collection of paintings, this book contains an explanatory introduction and a short autobiography by the artist.

The Sheela-na-Gigs of Ireland and Britain
Sheela-na-gigs are carvings of female images depicted as naked and posing in a manner which accentuates the most powerfully evocative symbol of the vulva. They were erected on many medieval churches and almost invariably placed in a very prominent position, such as over the main entrance door or a window. In Ireland, where the practice continued into the later middle ages, they are found on castles and other important structures. The Sheela-na-gigs are primarily sacred religious symbols but some historians have been reluctant to treat them seriously. They are generally referred to as protective talismans or good luck symbols, and more recently the suggestion that they were put on the churches as 'warnings against sin and lust' has found favour. But tradition does not support this view. All references to them indicate that they were highly regarded, revered images that held an exalted position within the religious iconography of the earlier church. This book has been produced in the hope that we may once again be able to look at, accept and fully appreciate sheela-na-gigs and thereby begin to feel respect for these once highly esteemed aspects of our heritage. The Sheela-na-Gigs of Ireland and Britain is written from a non-academic perspective and so aims to be accessible to the general reader. The book's catalogue section is a comprehensive alphabetically listed reference to all known Sheela-na-gigs in Ireland and Britain. There are approximately 144 such figures: over a hundred in Ireland and forty in Britain. Each entry includes a description, details of the location, and a drawing.

Poetry in Paintings
The book reveals the multifaceted soul of the poet and artist Marina Shkrobovoy-Vernalis. The author is a philosopher who looks at the magic sphere of life through the prism of poetry and painting! Hence the interest in various subjects in painting: landscapes, still lifes, flower compositions and portraits, written exclusively with love from the heart. The deep interrelationship of meanings and images is interesting: in the image, the wisdom of loneliness lives in an autumn alley, the soul-insomnia is embodied in the image of a young goddess, and in portraits, even the color of the background hides a mystery!Spiritual height lives here! And the author addresses everyone as a soul that he knows and feels for a long time as a relative! This is a unique conversation with subjects who are ready to recognize themselves and reflect the beauty of their thoughts to the world!"I have long been fascinated by Marina Shkrobova-Vernalis' poetry. Her poems have colour, melody, sound, taste and smell - and it's all heavenly. The subtlety and wisdom of her poems is mesmerising, the images in them are like beautiful jewellery. Her poetry embraces the beauty of thought and feeling, and when she reads her poems herself, it seems to me that they become living beings and manifestations of her many faces. All Marina's poetry is filled with love for people and faith in the living heavens".- Shalva AmonashviliGeorgian educator and psychologist

From Snake Charmers to Mouse Charmers
By the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, the grandson of Jawaharlal Nehru, the government by the direct descendant of the Nehru Dynasty under the Indian National Congress (INC) came to an end. His widow, an uneducated Italian Christian, continued the Dynasty Rule under a Congress-led hotchpotch coalition called UPA, which was voted out of power in early 2014.During the decade-long UPA government, the Indian economy was in a shambles, mired in massive corruption indulged in by all its Ministers - each one vying with one another in looting the National Exchequer. In retrospect, looking back over the Dynasty Rule of nearly seven decades since independence under the INC Party, India could gain the status of only 10th place in the world economic progress rating, although the neighboring China under the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) could become 2nd most powerful nation in the world despite the fact that INC was established four decades prior to the establishment of CCPThen the year 2014 heralded. In a spectacular festival of democracy, the world's largest political party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), won the election with absolute majority, and its Prime Ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, became the 14th P.M. of India on 26th May 2014. Since then the country witnessed remarkable growth and progress, aided by his corruption-free government, attaining the status of fifth largest economy in the world. It is during the inexorable passage of time since the "Modi-Era" began in 2014 that the essays included in this book were all penned by the Author, touching upon various aspects of the turn of events and of the friends and fous of Modi. By paraphrasing the sayings of Swami Vivekananda: "friends and foes are all instruments in the hands of PM Modi to help India work out its own karma" and lead the nation to greater heights in the years to come.
of Cities & Angels
This is not a collection of drawings of divine entities. Rather, it is of those fallen and earthbound artists, musicians and writers who search through cultural ruins to create new and inexplicable architectures in their wake. These they abandon to future generations to wander through and attempt to discern meaning from as the cycle builds and continues.
Pygmalion 1
Pygmalion 1 is an attempt to start something essential to the future of carving. It is an attempt to start a real and meaningful debate as to the nature, purpose and future of carving in the twenty-first century. This is a time when we see not only the continuation of a long-term decline in demand for hand carving skills, but the increased replacement, including by some heritage bodies, of those skills by laser-guided cutting machines and even 3D printers. Carving in art education has been under threat for a very long time, but it is now almost non-existent outside of a very small number of highly specialist institutions.Despite this, Pygmalion 1 does not start from the standpoint that hand carving is doomed. But it does intend to provoke the carving community to acknowledge there are potentially serious problems we must face and that we have put off the difficult act of facing them for far too long.Intentionally challenging and provocative, we do not claim to have any answers, but we do claim the right to ask questions - what we call our provocations. Through them our aim is to provoke debate. Whether you want to join in that debate is up to you.
The Secret Mind of Art
The Secret Mind of Art invites the reader into the mysteries of Western art. Its twelve chapters accompany readers on a transformative journey through some of the most significant works of the European tradition. Having first passed through the Door in the Sky of the Pantheon in Rome, we contemplate Christ in his Mandorla at Autun Cathedral, then meet Notre Dame in Paris as a stone, timber, and glass manifestation of the New Jerusalem. Each subsequent chapter furthers the adventure chronologically into hidden dimensions of painting, sculpture, and architecture, by the likes of Piero della Francesca, Botticelli, Donatello, Michelangelo, Titian, Palladio, William Blake, van Gogh, and C矇zanne. We are awakened stepwise to wonders forming a soul-making ladder for the contemplative spectator or reader. Here we have a crack at answering W.B. Yeats's query: How can art bring the soul of man to God?

Indian Painters of Colonial Era (1750 - 1950 AD)
""This book is a documentation of significant practicing painters and sculptors of Greater Pre-Independence India between 1750 and 1950. The task of collecting this scattered material of Colonial-era to the united India, lead to search for names of artists from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh and of course India. This register records almost 3000 names of practicing Indian artists, gathered assiduously from National archives, Museum records, rare old journals and books, and present living family members of deceased artists. In the absence of a legitimate record of the names of these forgotten artists names of many famous court painters under the patronage of Kings, Nawabs, and local rulers have been pushed into oblivion, with their works described in generalized terms, like coming from the 'Colonial Period' or 'Post Mughal Period', with a short description of a few painting styles of Provincial Schools. This book is the first of its kind and a small step towards giving recognition to these lost artists.""

Glitch Theory
What do glitches reveal about the normally invisible processes behind our interpretations? Glitches and Glitch Art illuminate the unseen assumptions, ideology of dialectical thinking, and role of established knowledge that shapes as well as determines our engagement with the world. Betancourt builds on the role of perception in guiding these interpretations to explore the possibilities offered by glitches for addressing digital media. Not confined to esoteric questions of semiosis, this study presents an expansive model of ambivalence and ambiguity whose ramifications address how initial assumptions and beliefs create meaning.Tracking glitches across technical media old and new, and moving from early abstraction's attempts to visualize a transcendental spiritualism through to contemporary AI generated art and media, Betancourt describes how glitches are not just technical failures but products of the instabilities between human interpretations and autonomous machinic operations that create a 'discursive aesthetic' guided by cultural fantasies of digital media's immateriality that idealize it as a perfect, transcendent form. A journey to the roots of meaning itself, Betancourt offers a paradigm that unpacks how engaging the glitch can become a critical model not only for artists, critics, and academics, but for anyone interested in Contemporary Art, tactical media, and cultural activism. all illustrations in full color
Voices of Friends Poetry & Art Almanac 2024
This almanac was being rightfully dedicated to the two hundred and twentieth fifth (225th) anniversary of that giant of Russian letters Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin (1799-1837). A man who towered over his contemporaries through the undeniable lyricism of his poetry, the subtle psychology of his novels and the intense dramatics of his ingeniously crafted plays. Furthermore, an author whose origins amid the Golden Age of Romanticism continue to overshadow my own contemporary corpus, due to Pushkin's intertwining of vocabularies surrounding 'prejudice' and 'mercy'. Taken together, twin motifs, which have come to encompass so much of Global Text on a number of levels. Indeed, Pushkin's monumental influence on fellow titans such as Henry James (1843-1916), as well as Sir Peter Shaffer (1926-2016) are still matters of ongoing debate amongst modern scholars. All meaning, I hope the unrepentant atavism of my six experimental poems in this collection pay an obvious homage to Eugene Onegin, not to mention the enduring inspiration offered by Pushkin's unique penmanship! - David William ParryBute (Scotland) 2023

It didn't go well for Sammy the Snake when Gary the Gator appeared in the lake. Gary looked mad and he was so big that he made Sammy feel about the size of a twig. Then Terry the Turtle warned Philip the Frog that Sammy the Snake had climbed on the log. So Sammy went home for something to eat and gave his advice on avoiding defeat

Amazonian Indigenous Cultures in Art and Anthropological Exhibitions
The book discusses the representation of Amazonian indigenous cultures in temporary exhibitions taking place between the 1980s and 2010 through the analysis of selected case studies of these exhibitions held in major institutions in Europe, South America and the United States, including the British Museum, Musée du Quai Branly, Centre George Pompidou, Museum of Modern Art of New York, São Paulo Biennial and São Paulo Art Museum. Drawing on extensive archival research, the book is richly illustrated and presents a range of exhibition documentation never published before. The book takes as a starting point the theoretical discussions that emerged in the 1980s stimulating the development of notions of 'decolonising' or 'indigenising' the museum as well as of practices of collaboration between museums and indigenous communities. Forty years on from the outset of these debates, the book proposes a critical inquiry on how these discussions inflected on exhibition practices in the following decades, focusing in particular on how 'major' institutions (ethnographic museums, art museums and art biennials) have responded to these debates. The results of the research suggest that practice has fallen behind theory and that most 'major' institutions or museums within Europe and the United States are still only marginally engaging with Amazonian indigenous peoples in the organisation of exhibitions. The book advances the concept of 'minor curating' as a strategy to potentiate access of indigenous peoples to historical collections held by major institutions and to facilitate the development of cultural projects with these collections and in ways that are culturally, historically and politically effective. The book has an interdisciplinary reach contributing to the fields of visual anthropology, curatorial studies, museum studies and exhibition history and covering a geographical area that has been overlooked within these fields.

Tears of Gold
A celebrated young British artist uses her gift to convey the dignity and resilience of women survivors of violence in forgotten corners of the world. This debut art book by British artist and human rights activist Hannah Rose Thomas presents her stunning portrait paintings of Yazidi women who escaped ISIS captivity, Rohingya women who fled violence in Myanmar, and Nigerian women who survived Boko Haram violence, alongside their own words, stories, and self-portraits. A final chapter features portraits and stories of Afghan, Ukrainian, Uyghur, and Palestinian women. These portraits, depicting women from three continents and three religions, are a visual testimony not only of war and injustice but also of humanity and resilience. Many of the women have suffered sexual violence; all have been persecuted and forcibly displaced on account of their faith or ethnicity.Hannah Rose Thomas met these women in Iraqi Kurdistan, Bangladeshi refugee camps, and Northern Nigeria while organizing art projects to teach women how to paint their self-portraits as a way to reclaim their personhood and self-worth. She gives women their own voice both by creating a safe space for them to share their stories and by using her impressive connections to make sure their stories are heard in places of influence in the Global North. Thomas uses techniques of traditional sacred art - early Renaissance tempera and oil painting and gold leaf - to convey the sacred value of each of these women in spite of all that they have suffered. This symbolic restoration of dignity is especially important considering the stigma surrounding sexual violence. Hannah's work attests to the power of the arts as a vehicle for healing, remembering, inclusion, and dialogue.Long after the news cameras have moved on to the next conflict, this book shines a spotlight on the ongoing work of healing and restoration in some of the most vulnerable and marginalized communities around the world. All publisher profits from this book will be donated to relevant charities.

Destruction Rites
In the early sixties, crowds gathered to watch rites of destruction - from the demolition derby where makeshift cars crashed into each other for sport, to concerts where musicians destroyed their instruments, to performances of self-destructing machines staged by contemporary artists. Destruction, in both its playful and fearsome aspects, was ubiquitous in the new Atomic Age. This complicated subjectivity was not just a way for people to find catharsis amid the fears of annihilation and postwar trauma, but also a complex instantiation of ideological crisis in a time with some seriously conflicted political myths. Destruction Rites explores the ephemeral visual culture of destruction in the postwar era and its links to contemporary art. It examines the demolition derby; games and toys based on warfare; playgrounds situated in bomb sites; and the rise of garage sales, where goods designed for obsolescence and destined for the garbage heap are reclaimed and repurposed by local communities. Mona Hadler looks at artists such as Jean Tinguely, Niki de Saint Phalle, Martha Rosler and Vito Acconci to expose how the 1960s saw destruction, construction and the everyday collide as never before. During the Atomic age, whether in the public sphere or art museums, destruction could be transformed into a constructive force and art objects and performances often oscillated between the two.

The Girl Prince
In February 1910, the future Virginia Woolf played the most famous practical joke in British military history. Blackening her face and masquerading as an Abyssinian prince, the young writer and her friends conned their way onto HMS Dreadnought, the Empire's most powerful battleship. The stunt made headlines around the world, embarrassed the Admiralty, and provoked debate in Parliament. But who was the 'girl prince' unidentified at the time, and what was she doing there? The Girl Prince intertwines three fascinating stories: a scandalous prank and its afterlife; Woolf's ideas about race and empire; and the actual lived experience of Black people in Edwardian Britain, from real princes to Caribbean writers and South African activists. Using letters, diaries, reporting and newly discovered archives, Danell Jones describes an extraordinary chain of events, exploring why a boundary-pushing novelist once pulled a bigoted blackface prank, and what it tells us--about Woolf's Britain and Woolf's work. This is a tantalisingly fresh take on an iconic writer and her deeply problematic stunt.
