Someday Homes Fill My Dreams
Emily Pittman is a young and dynamic artist living and working in St. John's, Newfoundland. Her artworks in Someday Homes Fill My Dreams are coupled with her poetic musings about the work, or about the inspiration for its creation. Her words conjure a friendship between two houses that blossoms after they are painted, stilted houses with legs dangling in the water or knees knocking, escape from home down an icy path or retuning from a nighttime swim to a warm, inviting home filled with music. Each poem gives a new understanding to her images.

Duncan and Marjorie Phillips and America's First Museum of Modern Art (Color)
He was born to privilege and sought the world of art. She lived at the center of that world-a working artist encouraged by the famous artists in her extended family. Together, Duncan Phillips and Marjorie Acker Phillips founded The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., the first museum of modern art in America. It opened in the grand Phillips family home in 1921, eight years before New York City's Museum of Modern Art and only a few weeks after they wed. Duncan took the lead in developing the collection and showcasing it. Marjorie kept space and time to paint. Duncan considered Marjorie a partner in the museum even though she was not directly involved in all purchasing and presentation decisions. To him, her influence was omnipresent. Although Duncan's writings on artists and art history were widely published, he chose not to provide much instruction for visitors to the museum. Instead, he combined signature methods of displaying art which live on at The Phillips Collection. Phillips had viewers in mind when he hung American art with European art-or art of the past with modern art, and he frequently rearranged works to stimulate fresh encounters. With unfettered access to archival material, author Pamela Carter-Birken argues that The Phillips Collection's relevancy comes from Duncan Phillips's commitment to providing optimal conditions for personal exploration of art. In-depth collecting of certain artists was one of Phillips's methods of encouraging independent thinking in viewers. Paintings by Pierre Bonnard, Arthur Dove, Georgia O'Keeffe, John Marin, Jacob Lawrence, and Mark Rothko provide testament to the power of America's first museum of modern art.

The Renaissance Cartoons of the Accademia Albertina
A sublime compendium of drawings from the school of Renaissance virtuoso Gaudenzio FerrariThis book presents the 16th-century cartoons of Northern Italian Renaissance artist Gaudenzio Ferrari (c. 1471-1546) and his students, who largely practiced in a style that combined elements of Milanese realism and Venetian color palettes in painting and sculpture. Donated in 1832 to the Pinacoteca dell'Accademia Albertina in Turin by King Charles Albert of Savoy, this collection of drawings has been carefully preserved through several centuries to arrive, reproduced in high resolution for the first time, within the pages of this volume. Nearly 60 preparatory drawings of varying sizes provide insight into the processes behind paintings by Ferrari and many of his students, who would go on to become significant figures themselves, such as Bernadino Lanino, Gerolamo Giovenone and Giuseppe Giovenone the Younger. These documents give readers a glimpse into what art education looked like in the Renaissance era, long before the arrival of modern fine arts academies.

Big Pharma, Big Greed (Second Edition)
UPDATED AND REVISED EDITION: Throughout his distinguished legal career, Stephen Sheller has relished the role of the underdog, evincing a sharply honed sense of fair play and justice.Early in his career, he represented Black Panthers in Philadelphia when they were arrested on trumped up murder and conspiracy charges. Later, he was in the vanguard of lawyers who took on the tobacco industry in the 1990s and he reprised that strategy a few years later in targeting Big Pharma for its harmful products and their deleterious effects on public health. In Big Pharma, Big Greed The inside story of one lawyer's battle to stem the flood of dangerous medicines and protect public health Sheller tells a tale that is at once deeply personal but also with wide repercussions for the U.S. health care system and the hundreds of millions of Americans whose lives literally depend on it.Decades of litigating against the pharmaceutical industry taught Sheller one irreducible lesson: In too many instances, unneeded and at times dangerous drugs are foisted on the public without adequate warning as to risks, all in the service of boosting industry profits. All too often, achieving block buster status for a patent protected medication becomes an end in itself, as Big Pharma companies manipulate clinical trial data, draft scholarly articles for friendly physicians often in their pay, and market their drugs for uses that never had been approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration. This last practice proved to be something of an Achilles Heel for the industry. In litigation that resulted in settlement and fines in the billions, companies such as Eli Lilly acknowledged marketing drugs off label to a broad range of patients for whom the medications had never been approved. Sheller's litigation formed the basis for these settlements and the effort is ongoing. He and other plaintiffs' lawyers now are suing Janssen Pharmaceuticals for the adverse impacts of its drug, Risperdal, a second generation anti-psychotic that Sheller and others allege is linked to the growth of female breast tissue in young boys and men. Already there have been several big jury verdicts against Janssen with hundreds of more cases yet to be tried. In the book, Sheller not only recounts his major litigation battles but also makes sweeping proposals for industry reform. To restore regulatory credibility, Sheller proposes that responsibility for testing new medicines be taken away from the industry and given over to hospitals and other public entities partnering with government regulators. Pharmaceutical companies that betray the public trust would risk government- initiated dissolution. Harsh medicine to be sure, but Sheller believes entirely appropriate to the underlying malady.
It Is What It Is
This book is a commentary on the author's experience surrounding the COVID-19 crisis. It is neither a scientific nor an academic book. It explores human and social behavior around conspiracies and myths that rapidly emerged throughout the crisis. Through an examination of facts and factoids, information and misinformation, and truths and falsehoods emerging from a variety of actors, readers are taken on an exploratory cognitive journey in an attempt to explain why we behave the way we do. The author, Mak (Chanchal) Khan, relies on a combination of his personal experience and views, as well as opinions expressed by a number of experts in psychology, sociology, economics, politics, and more. From mums and dads to students and educators to restless travelers on long airport layovers, this book may pique the interest of anyone interested in expanding their understanding of how and why competing narratives on the pandemic begin and gain traction. Given the quickly and ever-changing nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, this book attempts to shed light on a difficult and dynamic subject matter. Although it may be the case that some of the analyses are less relevant depending on the date any given reader goes through this material, the historical perspective and lessons learned will remain relevant indefinitely. It is what it Is!

Picturing Punishment
Picturing Punishment examines representations of criminal bodies as they moved in, through, and out of publicly accessible spaces in the city during punishment rituals in the seventeenth-century Dutch Republic. Once put to death, the criminal cadaver did not come to rest. Its movement through public spaces indicated the potent afterlife of the deviant body, especially its ability to transform civic life.Focusing on material culture associated with key sites of punishment, Anuradha Gobin argues that the circulation of visual media related to criminal punishments was a particularly effective means of generating discourse and formulating public opinion, especially regarding the efficacy of civic authority. Certain types of objects related to criminal punishments served a key role in asserting republican ideals and demonstrating the ability of officials to maintain order and control. Conversely, the circulation of other types of images, such as inexpensive paintings and prints, had the potential to subvert official messages. As Gobin shows, visual culture thus facilitated a space in which potentially dissenting positions could be formulated while also bringing together seemingly disparate groups of people in a quest for new knowledge.Combining a diverse array of sources including architecture, paintings, prints, anatomical illustrations, and preserved body parts, Picturing Punishment demonstrates how the criminal corpse was reactivated, reanimated, and in many ways reintegrated into society.
Five Egyptian Goddesses
This volume explores the earliest appearances and functions of the five major Egyptian goddesses Neith, Hathor, Nut, Isis and Nephthys. Although their importance endured throughout more than three millennia of ancient Egyptian history, their origins, earliest roles, and relationships in religion, myth, and cult have never before been studied together in detail. Showcasing the latest research with carefully chosen illustrations and a full bibliography, Susan Tower Hollis suggests that the origins of the goddesses derived primarily from their functions, as, shown by their first appearances in the text and art of the Protodynastic, Early Dynastic, and Old Kingdom periods of the late fourth and third millennia BCE. The roles of the goddess Bat are also explored where she is viewed both as an independent figure and in her specific connections to Hathor, including the background to their shared bovine iconography. Hollis provides evidence of the goddesses' close ties with royalty and, in the case of Neith, her special connections to early queens. Vital reading for all scholars of Egyptian religion and other ancient religions and mythology, this volume brings to light the earliest origins of these goddesses who would go on to play major parts in later narratives, myths, and mortuary cult.

The Art of Punishment
This collection of art works comprising Books 1 and 2, provides glimpses of the ways in which we and our ancestors have punished those who broke the rules and laws; to repeat, some real, some imagined. The reader, confronted with an expanse of horror, sits back relieved that we no longer treat criminals or misfits or sinners or women or children or animals in the ways depicted in these volumes. But pay close attention to the pictures of prison in Book 2, for they hide the horrors of modern punishment within them. Yet out of all this violence and dread, there is but one consolation for the existence and seeming necessity of punishment: it makes possible the highly regarded human trait of mercy. "A picture is worth a thousand words," said Fred R. Barnard in 1921. The pictures in these book provide an intense guide to the history, practice and philosophy of punishment in the Western World.and what Western civilizations do to those who break society's rules of behavior. Yet pictures do not necessarily, or maybe even rarely tell the truth, certainly never the whole truth. In these volumes they are rather an indication, guideposts maybe, to the human drives, initiative and imagination in recording the history and practice of punishment. Much of the art does tell a story, most often one of the sword in the hands of tyrants, egged on by a rousing crowd.Taken together, Books 1 and 2 do not represent a chronological history of the art of punishment, rather they are an attempt to locate the origins of punishment in Western thought and action. Book 1 begins with punishment as it was depicted in Greek mythology, followed by Judeo-Christian punishments, both imagined and practiced-an entire religion based on punishment. Saints and sinners alike are cruelly punished, as are women, children and animals, whose common lives battle with sainthood and sinfulness, do they not? Guilt pervades all and is presumed. Punishment follows logically; it lies internal. Book 2 focuses on the external objects of punishment, slaves, soldiers (the military itself the personification of punishment), and of course, the most celebrated objects of punishment, criminals. Here a different principle dominates: the more such objects are punished, the more guilty they are. In Book 1, punishment relieves guilt. In Book 2, punishment guarantees and confirms guilt.
Material Culture and Women’s Religious Experience in Antiquity
How can material artifacts help illuminate the religious lives of women in antiquity? In what ways do archaeological and art historical studies recover women's religious perspectives and experiences that the literary record misses or underrepresents? The authors of the essays in this volume set out to answer such questions in fascinating, new case studies of women and ancient religions in the Near East and Mediterranean world. They cover a broad historical, geographic, and religious spectrum as they explore women's lives from the time of ancient Egypt in the second millennium BCE into the early medieval period, from the Syrian Desert to Western Europe, in the religious traditions of Egypt, Canaan, Greece, Rome, ancient Israel, early Judaism, and early Christianity. Working at the intersections of religion, archaeology, art history, and women's history, these authors make fresh contributions to interdisciplinary studies, and their essays will be of interest to students and scholars across these academic fields.
Fashion Moon Magazine
Fashion moon is an illustrated collection of stories that delves further into our American culture and the subconscious perspective we have on fashion. Fashion is a dream brought to life through fabrics of time and expression. Spiritual colors and elemental energies infiltrate our senses with an inspiration to guard the spirit of life, which resides in each of us as well, as we translate this age into revelations of faith and design. Surely, the hands of fate are guiding the angel's whispering from the dream lands we call home.
In My Life
as the music world mourns the death of rolling stones drummer charlie watts, we consider the whole 'english invasion' of musicians since the 1960s. Although, in my opinion, the story of the rolling stones is not ready for the history books, we take this opportunity to reflect on their pioneering colleagues, The Beatles.
Jamaican Diaspora
We set the trends in fashion!Look into the mirror and say "I am beautiful and deserve the universe's blessings". Believe it and it will be so. Yes, if no one else says it, you say it and believe this. Self-love is so important. Why? Because loving your self allows the impossible to become possible. Unemployed or in a stagnant job, self-love will lead you to keep trying new, innovative ideas. Usain Bolt is the fastest human because he loved himself enough to stay away from drugs, remain in the gym to develop his muscles and practice on the track perfecting his technique. Self-love waters the soul and creates harmony. Musicians' understand the impact of vibrations, melody and harmony. Bob Marley's self-love told him that good things do come out of Trench Town. Bob sang about his experiences, making the best out of his surroundings. Some of Marley's lyrics explored the depths of the human condition, which resonated with others worldwide. The only way to walk into your destiny is to take one step at a time. In Malcolm Gladwell's book the Outlier, he stated that a minimum of 10,000 hours is required for anyone to reach the zenith of the objective, so don't worry if your dreams and goals are taking a while. Whatever is supposed to be for you, Karma will bring it. Now deep breathe, and breathe and breathe.
The Milan Church of Sant’ambrogio
The book concerns a major medieval monument in an urban environment. It discusses previously overlooked material which calls into question the conventional reconstruction of the building history. Correspondingly, it offers a reappraisal of the building's transmutations over several periods, from the Romano-Christian to the Romanesque.
