Hans Zatzka
During the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries, Hans Zatzka (1859-1945) was a popular artist in Austria. He is best known for his truly unique fantasy paintings, in which he created his own dream world. Zatzka's utopia consisted of soft natural environments in which he placed fairy-tale-like women, often surrounded by flowers, mythological creatures, and animals. These works range from playful scenes with some humorous elements, to women placed in an Oriental environment, to colorful interior scenes where a sensual woman is waiting for her lover. Some of these fantasy paintings are created in a keyhole format, creating the sensation that the viewer is peeking at the models through the keyhole. Zatzka was a very productive artist, and his oeuvre also includes works with a religious theme, mainly Madonna paintings, and still lifes filled with colorful flowers and fruits.During his career, the art of Hans Zatzka strongly appealed to the lower and middle class citizens, and his paintings ended up with private collectors and local galleries. As a consequence, Zatzka's works have not been on display in major museums over time, severely limiting his exposure to a larger audience. Luckily, many of his works are now regularly sold in auctions, providing us with a glimpse into the mesmerizing world of Hans Zatzka. Sokunge (As If)
"Sokunge/As if ". "Sokunge", is a Shona word that describes phenomena that is intrinsically something else other than their appearance. More like deception or dissimulation of form, concept, or sound. In this exhibition, I was looking at forms that appear as something, but upon a closer look, they reference a lot of other things, more like below the surface politics. That is the relationship between hidden and exposed transcripts, it is the subtext, the micro politics. There's a lot of mingling of symbolism in the work itself and layered aesthetics.
Brain Fuel Evolution
We've learned a lot about the brain: which nutrients are required to make neurotransmitters, which nutrient deficiencies cause depression, and even which nutrients improve memory and intelligence. Wouldn't it make sense, then, to eat "brain foods" that are high in these "brain fuel" nutrients? Fortunately, the USDA recently analyzed several thousand foods for their nutrient contents, so we now know what these brain foods are and can add them to our diet. That's the practical side of this research. The "cool" side is that, in looking back through human history, we discover that major advances in civilization often occurred after new brain foods came into the diet, during the Axial Age, Ancient Greece, the Renaissance, the Elizabethan Era and 19th century France, to name a few. We also see that, in the cases where the brain foods were removed from the diet, the civilizations began to deteriorate shortly thereafter. We can even go back to Paleolithic times and explain the transition from archaic to modern man using simply the concepts of brain fuels and brain foods. These historical "case studies" underscore the necessity of brain foods in human evolution. Nutrients are the fundamental fuel for the brain, but delivering them to the body is an art. If culture is king, then cuisine is queen. Nonetheless, it has been mainly serendipity that has been responsible for these improved cuisines. Multiple factors, including geography, technology and even politics, have time and again led randomly to an improved mix of brain fuels. We judge civilizations in many ways. One way is to look at the visual arts and assess the technical expertise and the artistic expression represented there. Looking within civilizations we see large changes in one or both of these features after a major increase in brain food availability, as well as major advances in philosophy, literature and other arts. The study of science (natural philosophy) can trace its roots to the serendipitous confluence of all the brain fuels in abundant supply in Ancient Greece. The times and places examined here include the first civilizations (Ancient Egypt, Indus Valley Civilization, Mesoamerica, and Inca Empire), the Pan-Asian Awakening in the 6th Century BC (a few decades of the Axial Age), the three eras with the most abundant brain fuels (Ancient Greece, Renaissance Tuscany and 19th Century France), and places where a partial abundance of brain fuels resulted in advancements in specific fields (Elizabethan England, Dutch Golden Age, Scottish Enlightenment). There are also specific examples of civilizations where brain fuels were intentionally restricted to create aggression in warfare (Roman legions and Mongol horsemen). Currently on the scene there are several popular modern diets (e.g. Atkins, Paleo, Mediterranean), and an analysis of these shows that, while they all express some fundamental tenets that improve the level of brain fuel nutrients, each one exhibits a deficit in one or more of them. We consider these diets from a brain fuels perspective and discuss how to adapt them in an easy and sustainable manner to maximize mental performance.

The Nurturing Darkness
The Nurturing Darkness presents the art of Carol Bajen-Gahm as she meditates on the root cellars of Newfoundland. It consists of twenty-two mixed media abstract paintings in which she uses encaustic and oil paints, seaweed prints, netting, photo transfers and other media to distill the many aspects of these dark but nurturing underground structures still extant in many Newfoundland outports. She explores their dark, confined spaces that create an indifference to time and space and generate a fear that leads to a deeper understanding. Her geologic processes of deposition and erosion (painting and scraping) create to a balance between form and color; shape and texture that engenders a deep sense of seeing.Carol and her studio are literally immersed in the wild surroundings of the North Atlantic and, as a consequence, Carol's art is steeped in the soul of Newfoundland.

The Cult of Castor and Pollux in Ancient Rome
The Dioscuri first appeared at the Battle of Lake Regillus in 496 BC to save the new Republic. Receiving a temple in the Forum in gratitude, the gods continued to play an important role in Roman life for centuries and took on new responsibilities as the needs of the society evolved. Protectors of elite horsemen, boxers and sailors, they also served as guarantors of the Republic's continuation and, eventually, as models for potential future emperors. Over the course of centuries, the cult and its temples underwent many changes. In this book, Amber Gartrell explores the evolution of the cult. Drawing on a range of methodological approaches and a wide range of ancient evidence, she focuses on four key aspects: the gods' two temples in Rome, their epiphanies, their protection of varied groups, and their role as divine parallels for imperial heirs, revealing how religion, politics and society interacted and influenced each other.
Trails of a Paintbrush
Comparatively few visual artists have written autobiographies, and Trails of a Paintbrush by Nicholas R. Brewer (1857-1949) is an especially engaging story of an artist's education and rise to success. From his beginnings on a pioneering Minnesota farm, Brewer was curious, industrious, and responsive to nature. Moving to St. Paul and later New York, he had little formal training but learned quickly from his many artist friends and acquaintances, including Homer Dodge Martin and George Inness. Brewer eventually became nationally known as a landscapist and portraitist, dubbed "the Abraham Lincoln of American art."Brewer was perhaps unique in his long campaign of traveling exhibitions that included lectures on his guiding principles. The goal of the artist, in his view, is to interpret the beauties of nature through form and color, conveying simple, unchanging truths rather than ephemeral facts. Often linked with Tonalism and Impressionism, Brewer resisted what he saw as the distortions of early modern Expressionists and Cubists, arguing for a "return to the sane and truly progressive along all lines." His belief in an art that communicates with and uplifts the public will resonate with many today.This is an inspiring story of rags to riches and the growth of wisdom through tireless self-education in art, history, politics, and religion. It is also an entertaining account of Brewer's interactions with the famous (Ignace Paderewski, Maud Powell, Franklin D. Roosevelt) and the not-so-famous of his time. Trails of a Paintbrush was originally published in 1938 in a limited edition of 250 copies, which are now rare and costly. The Afton Press reprint is a faithful reproduction, including over ninety-five photographs and artwork.
Frederic Leighton
Keren Rosa Hammerschlag's Frederic Leighton: Death, Mortality, Resurrection offers a timely reexamination of the art of the late Victorian period's most institutionally powerful artist, Frederic Lord Leighton (1830-1896). As President of the Royal Academy from 1878 to 1896, Leighton was committed to the pursuit of beauty in art through the depiction of classical subjects, executed according to an academic working-method. But as this book reveals, Leighton's art and discourse were beset by the realisation that academic art would likely die with him. Rather than achieving classical perfection, Hammerschlag argues, Leighton's figures hover in transitional states between realism and idealism, flesh and marble, life and death, as gothic distortions of the classical ideal. The author undertakes close readings of key paintings, sculptures, frescos and drawings in Leighton's oeuvre, and situates them in the context of contemporaneous debates about death and resurrection in theology, archaeology and medicine. The outcome is a pleasurably macabre counter-biography that reconfigures what it meant to be not just a late-Victorian neoclassicist and royal academician, but President of the Victorian Royal Academy.
The Re-identification of Pop Art
The Pop Art phenomenon has been a subject of discussion for art critics, gallerists, collectors and the artists themselves since its first appearance in the '50s. Beginning in the '80s, a strong interest emerged in studying the current retrospectively, intending not only to define its spread in geographical and chronological terms, but also to identify which artists and single pieces of artwork could be labeled as 'Pop'. Despite the efforts made in describing the current, previous research has trivialized it to the point that the term 'Pop' has been misattributed and its features are not precise. It is within this framework that this book investigates the artistic fortunes of Pop Art in Italy, exploring whether what happened in Italy could be identified as such and especially focusing on the period between 1962 and 1964 (as well as the period immediately following).
Dangers of A Stubborn Heart
My phone vibrated again. I didn't look this time, but I knew it was him. It was Saturday evening and I had just returned from church with my parents. I had started to visit regularly, of late. Maybe it was my way of asking God for help, or maybe I was just bored. I sprawled across the bed diagonally, with my eyes closed. As soon as the phone stopped ringing, it started again. Yes, it's him alright, always persistent, never taking no for an answer. He believed the world owed him and doesn't have the right to tell him no. I turned and faced the wall as I listened to the constant rounds of vibrations. I groaned and silently wished he'd stop. There was a knock on my door, but I didn't care to see who it was. The hinges creaked as it slowly opened. I rolled over to see my mother standing at the entrance. I managed to flash her a half-baked smile as I sat up. I didn't even notice that the phone had stopped its incessant vibration. "He's outside" My mother broke the silence. I knew who she was talking about. I sighed. "Who?" I ignorantly asked. She paused before confirming my suspicions. "He says he wants to talk to you. If it was up to me, he'd stay there until he crystalized. Better yet, throw cold water on him." I managed a low chuckle. My mother always knew how to keep a conversation full of life. She threw up her hand as if to say it wasn't her business. I knew better. My mother disliked Donnavan. According to her, he stole the light from my eyes. My parents had so far kept out of my drama with him, this is one time I secretly wished they'd take charge.

Victorian Painting
The range of artistic production in the Victorian age included history painting; topographical landscapes of the Continent and the Middle East; Landseer's royal portraits and heroic animal pictures; Pre-Raphaelite painting with its combined naturalism and symbolism; Leighton's classical mythologies; and Frith's popular depictions of the leisured middle classes. Amid this great variety of styles and emphasis, influential critics such as Ruskin dictated that art should be morally uplifting, an orthodoxy challenged by Whistler, Sickert, Steer and their fellows among the "London Impressionists".
My Life as A Persian Ballerina
Born in Tehran in 1930 into a mixed family of a Tartar mother and an Azerbayjani father, Haideh Ahmadzadeh started dancing at the age of seven in a country that was struggling to keep up with modern times. Dancing for girls was not an accepted or desirable occupation. Her love of dance made her overcome many obstacles and with the approval and backing of her mother and later her husband Nejad, she got to the top of her profession. With a great deal of hard work, discipline and drive, Haideh and Nejad founded a Ballet Academy, Iranian National Ballet Company and Iranian Folk Dance, Music and Song Group. They performed regularly for State guests at home and abroad, their travels wrought with a great deal of incident and adventure. When the Islamic Revolution put a stop to all artistic activities in Iran, Haideh and Nejad had to leave a lifetime's work behind and seek new adventures in the West.

He was born to privilege and sought the world of art. She lived at the center of that world-a working artist encouraged by the famous artists in her extended family. Together, Duncan Phillips and Marjorie Acker Phillips founded The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., the first museum of modern art in America. It opened in the grand Phillips family home in 1921, eight years before New York City's Museum of Modern Art and only a few weeks after they wed. Duncan took the lead in developing the collection and showcasing it. Marjorie kept space and time to paint. Duncan considered Marjorie a partner in the museum even though she was not directly involved in all purchasing and presentation decisions. To him, her influence was omnipresent. Although Duncan's writings on artists and art history were widely published, he chose not to provide much instruction for visitors to the museum. Instead, he combined signature methods of displaying art which live on at The Phillips Collection. Phillips had viewers in mind when he hung American art with European art-or art of the past with modern art, and he frequently rearranged works to stimulate fresh encounters. With unfettered access to archival material, author Pamela Carter-Birken argues that The Phillips Collection's relevancy comes from Duncan Phillips's commitment to providing optimal conditions for personal exploration of art. Abstract Design in American Quilts at 50
Fifty years after its debut, the exhibition Abstract Design in American Quilts is remembered as a pivotal moment in the intersecting histories of art, craft, and design. Installed at New York's Whitney Museum of American Art in 1971, the exhibition presented traditional American pieced quilts on walls more commonly used to display modern art such as abstract expressionist paintings.
