In Early Modern times, techniques of assembling, compiling and arranging pre-existing material were part of the established working methods in many arts. In the world of 18th century opera, such practices ensured that operas could become a commercial success because the substitution or compilation of arias fitting the singer's abilities proved the best recipe for fulfilling the expectations of audiences. Known as pasticcios since the 18th century, these operas have long been considered inferior patchwork. The volume collects essays that reconsider the pasticcio, contextualize it, define its preconditions, look at its material aspects and uncover its aesthetical principles.

The Gouda Windows (1552-1572): Art and Catholic Renewal on the Eve of the Dutch Revolt offers the first complete analysis of the cycle of monumental Renaissance stained-glass windows donated to the Sint Janskerk in Gouda, after a fire gutted it in 1552. Central among the donors were King Philip II of Spain and Joris van Egmond, Bishop of Utrecht, who worked together to reform the Church. The inventor of the iconographic program, a close associate to the bishop as well as the king, strove to renew Catholic art by taking the words of Jesus as a starting point. Defining Catholic religion based on widely accepted biblical truths, the ensemble shows that the Mother Church can accommodate all true Christians.

French colonisers of the Third Republic claimed not to oppress but to liberate, imagining they were spreading republican ideals to the colonies to make a Greater France. The Reading Figure in Irish Art in the Long Nineteenth Century
The reading figure has been a recurrent theme in Western art but especially from the nineteenth century. This book examines Irish portraits during the long nineteenth century in which people are shown reading or holding a book. It explores the different assumptions and values that were ascribed to reading and contemporary constructions of the reader. The selected pictures are by artists born, trained, or practising in Ireland. 'Irish art' is, therefore, used broadly to include work framed in some way by experience of Ireland and its history, culture, and politics. This was a time of large social and cultural shifts for Ireland, including the Great Famine and its aftermath, the growth of Irish nationalism, and the slow erosion of Anglo-Irish landlord power. It was a period of growing mass literacy, and also a time when books and other reading, including Irish novels, were often published in London. Many of the artists and sitters discussed were Anglo-Irish Protestants, a number of whom had Irish nationalist sympathies. Reading, especially the reading of fiction, was not valued as a manly occupation. Both imperial and nationalist ideologues fostered dominant notions of manliness that depended on the assumption of an aggressive masculine nature checked by self-management. Portraits of male subjects with a book usually follow the tradition of accessories functioning as professional or status symbols. Nonetheless, some men are depicted reading and failing to embody a manly attitude. A prevalent patriarchal ideology framed women as inferior to men in both physical and intellectual power. Yet this book argues that nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Dublin was a space of special creativity for women, at least among those from the privileged classes. The introduction of 'silent reading', alongside the spread of the novel, allowed such women to engage privately with a new range of imaginative and intellectual reading materials, while silent reading also offered seclusion from patriarchal surveillance. Visual images of women as serious readers contradicted common constructions of women as consumers of lightweight romances, or as an object for the male gaze. It is contended that such images drew on and contributed to the emergence of the 'New Woman' in Ireland.

The turn of the 1960s-70s, characterized by the rapid acceleration of globalization, prompted a radical transformation in the perception of urban and natural environments. The urban revolution and related prospect of the total urbanisation of the planet, in concert with rapid population growth and resource exploitation, instigated a surge in environmental awareness and activism. One implication of this moment is a growing recognition of the integration and interconnection of natural and urban entities. The present collection is an interdisciplinary inquiry into the changing modes of representation of nature in the city beginning from the turn of the 1960s/70s. Bringing together a number of different disciplinary approaches, including architectural studies and aesthetics, heritage studies and economics, environmental science and communication, the collection reflects upon the changing perception of socio-natures in the context of increasing urban expansion and global interconnectedness as they are/were manifest in specific representations. Using cases studies from around the globe, the collection offers a historical and theoretical understanding of a paradigmatic shift whose material and symbolic legacies are still accompanying us in the early 21st century.

Feminist Avant-Garde

For art history, the 1970s represent the beginning of women subverting culturally and socially established constructions and traditional norms. Second-wave feminism, with its slogan "The personal is political", challenged the one-dimensional roles assigned to women--mother, housewife, and spouse. During this period, women artists radically questioned their duties and created a plurality of self-determined representations of themselves. Rejecting traditional male-dominated techniques, such as painting, these artists made use of new media, such as photography, film, video, and performance. Doch ist Hermann Bahr damit der Gr羹nder der Jung-Wiener und somit auch Initiator der Wiener Moderne? Dass man dies so nicht behaupten kann, darin sind sich mittlerweile alle Experten einig. The idea for The Van Diemen History Prize came out of a conversation with Associate Professor Kristyn Harman, of the University of Tasmania. In those days, air line travel was expensive, but it had its perks. One of the perks was you were allowed to break journey and stay overnight on the route; airlines would pay for the accommodation and food. The author decided take a chance and stay couple of places with the eight dollars in his pocket. He decided stay in Delhi, Zurich and Cologne. In Cologne, he got in trouble with hotel management - you will find the details in the book. His ambition was to travel the world for three years and return to India. He knew eight dollars wouldn't take him too far, but that was the most the Indian government allowed you to take out of the country. Soon after arriving, he started to fall in love with Canada and the people here. After few years, he gave up the idea of returning to India. During this time, his company recognized his capability in engineering and offered him responsible positions. He put his two sons through medical programs; they became doctors and they both married doctors also. He considers this is his greatest achievement and sacrifice in Canada. The author also gives some advice to new immigrants. This is his story.

The author decided take a chance and stay couple of places with the eight dollars in his pocket. He decided stay in Delhi, Zurich and Cologne. In Cologne, he got in trouble with hotel management - you will find the details in the book. His ambition was to travel the world for three years and return to India. He knew eight dollars wouldn't take him too far, but that was the most the Indian government allowed you to take out of the country. Soon after arriving, he started to fall in love with Canada and the people here. After few years, he gave up the idea of returning to India. During this time, his company recognized his capability in engineering and offered him responsible positions. He put his two sons through medical programs; they became doctors and they both married doctors also. He considers this is his greatest achievement and sacrifice in Canada. The author also gives some advice to new immigrants. This is his story.

Bright, bold, and bursting with color-drenched patterns, the paintings of the postmodernist American artist Jeanne Leighton-Lundberg Clarke (1925-2014) shimmer like the stained-glass windows of an abstract cathedral. For decades, her "Favorite Ladies" paintings have delighted viewers with their almost whimsical appropriation of famous women from the history of art, borrowing from the canvases of such artists as ?douard Manet, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol. Stylistically paralleling the post-modernist movement of Pattern & Decoration, Clarke explored gender, familial relationships, and religious symbolism from sometimes unexpected and even contradictory perspectives; she explored femininity and female roles while resisting the label of feminist. Clarke, however, embraced the stylistic descriptor of maximalism. This book tells the story of critical avant-garde design in Japan, which emerged during the 1960s and continues to inspire designers today. He became a professor of Anthropology at Columbia University in 1899 and founded the first Ph.D program in anthropology in America.
