Tree of Pearls
Shajar al-Durr--known as "Tree of Pearls"--began her remarkable career as a child slave, given as property to the Ayyubid Sultan Salih of Egypt. She became his favorite concubine, was manumitted, became the sultan's wife, served as governing regent, and ultimately rose to become the legitimately appointed sultan of Egypt in 1250 after her husband's death. Shajar al-Durr used her wealth and power to add a tomb to his urban madrasa; with this innovation, madrasas and many other charitably endowed architectural complexes became commemorative monuments, a practice that remains widespread today. A highly unusual case of a Muslim woman authorized to rule in her own name, her reign ended after only three months when she was forced to share her governance with an army general from the ranks of the Mamluks (elite slave soldiers) and for political expediency to marry him. Despite the fact that Shajar al-Durr's story ends tragically with her assassination and hasty burial, her deeds in her lifetime offer a stark alternative to the continued belief that women in the medieval period were unseen, anonymous, and inconsequential in a world that belonged to men. This biography--the first ever in English--will place the rise and fall of the sultan-queen in the wider context of the cultural and architectural development of Cairo, the city that still holds one of the largest and most important collections of Islamic monuments in the world. D. Fairchild Ruggles also situates the queen's extraordinary architectural patronage in relation to other women of her own time, such as Aleppo's Ayyubid regent. Bruce Lakofka was a multi-talented artist with the eye and hands of an "Old Master" who could and did paint everything he saw in his twentieth and twenty-first century world. His work was mainly representational but he could paint in any style. He was my friend for nearly fifty years. This book is his legacy. Bruce was a little known "undiscovered" artist, known only to a few experts here and there and his appreciative customers. Bruce was a person who followed his star and served his artistic muse despite life's bumps along the way. He was a modest and religious person who believed his gifts were God-given.

Art for Art’s Sake. The Art and Life of Florence McNeil Hardy
A passion for life and learning exemplified the short career of one of the best American portrait artists of recent times. Florence McNeil Hardy started from the Kansas plains and, by her college days, was developing into an extraordinarily talented artist, winning an international competition while in college. She continued training at the Kansas City Art Institute and at the prestigious Art Student's League of New York, finally settling in Monahans, Texas, where most of her portraits were done. Her portraits won first place and/or best of show at major exhibitions all over the United States. Many of her paintings, including some that won exhibits, "Jane's Stormy," "Asyrian," "Kellen's Child," "Dark Canyon," and "Adeline Kennard" and others, have not been found. And, there is a mystery about her painting, "Girl in Pink"; who is she? Retirement brought Florence and her family to northwestern Arkansas, settling at Winton Springs in Pea Ridge. Florence did only six landscapes in Arkansas, all at our new home at Winton Springs; there are no portraits known from her brush after leaving Texas. About a year later on her wedding anniversary, April 15, 1955, Florence died of a massive heart attack.

Comradely Objects
The Russian avant-garde of the 1920s is broadly recognised to have been Russia's first truly original contribution to world culture. In contrast, Soviet design of the post-war period is often dismissed as hack-work and plagiarism that resulted in a shabby world of commodities. This book offers a new perspective on the history of Soviet design by focusing on the notion of the comradely object as an agent of progressive social relations that state-sponsored Soviet design inherited from the avant-garde. It introduces a shared history of domestic objects, hand-made as well as machine made, mass-produced as well as unique, utilitarian as well as challenging the conventional notion of utility. This is a study of post-avant-garde Russian productivism at the intersection of intellectual history, social history and material culture studies, an account attentive to the complexities and contradictions of Soviet design. Die Leitfragen sollen dabei sein, welche Erkenntnisse uns dazu die Hauptquelle dieser Arbeit, n瓣mlich das Tagebuch Chantelous, liefert und zweitens welche charakteristischen Rahmenbedingungen und individuellen Konfliktebenen die Parisreise Berninis aus der biographisch-historischen Perspektive aufweist. Chronologisch gesehen wird in dieser Arbeit auch die Vorgeschichte der Frankreichreise behandelt. Ende des behandelten Zeitraums markiert die Abreise Berninis aus Paris am 20. Oktober 1665. Bernini traf am 2.Juni 1665 in Paris ein und reiste am 20.Oktober 1665 ab. Doch die Berufung Berninis nach Frankreich f瓣llt nicht vom Himmel, sie muss vor dem Hintergrund einer l瓣ngeren historischen Vorgeschichte gesehen werden. Diese ist bestimmt von drei Grundlinien: Zum Einen durch die fr羹hen Verbindungen Berninis zu Frankreich, zweitens durch die diplomatische Krise zwischen Rom und Paris zwischen 1662-1664 und drittens durch eine Krise im Umbau des Louvre.

St. Catherine of Alexandria in Renaissance Roman ArtCase Studies in Patronage
How and why did a medieval female saint from the Eastern Mediterranean come to be such a powerful symbol in early modern Rome? This study provides an overview of the development of the cult of Catherine of Alexandria in Renaissance Rome, exploring in particular how a saint's cult could be variously imaged and 'reinvented' to suit different eras and patronal interests. Cynthia Stollhans traces the evolution of the saint's imagery through the lens of patrons and their interests-with special focus on the importance of Catherine's image in the fashioning of her Roman identity-to show how her imagery served the religious, political, and/or social agendas of individual patrons and religious orders.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2020 im Fachbereich Kunst - Kunstgeschichte, Note: 2, Universit瓣t Wien (Institut f羹r kunstgeschichte), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Diese Seminararbeit befasst sich mit Tapisserien entstanden in dem Zeitraum von 1500 bis 1530. Dabei geht es um das Ph瓣nomen der anachronistische Raumwirkung der Tapisserien, die sich nicht an der Tiefenwirkung und Erfindung der Zentralperspektive orientierte. Anhand ausgew瓣hlter Beispiele und ausgehend von Weddigens Beispiel der Cluny Tapisserienserie, wird die ikonographische Tradition der anachronistischen Raumkonstruktion (im franz繹sischen Raum) analysiert und weitere Tapisserien die eine stilistische ?hnlichkeit zu ihr aufweisen und um die gleiche Zeit entstanden sind, vorgestellt. Schlie?lich wird anhand von der "L矇rian et Laur矇olle" Tapisserienserie die Wirkungsmacht der anachronistischen Darstellung und das Zusammenspiel der Tapisserien mit anderen Medien analysiert. In seinem Aufsatz "Textile Bildr瓣ume: Antike/Neuzeit" versucht Tristan Weddigen sich anhand von Tapisserien vom dominanten kunstgeschichtlichen Diskurs, welcher die Kunst und ihrer Interpretation fernab der Materialit瓣t der Kunstwerke betrachtet, zu l繹sen und auf eine "medial vielf瓣ltige Kunstgeschichte" aufmerksam zu machen. Trotz der g瓣ngigen Ausschreibung des Materials aus der Geschichte der neuzeitlichen Kunst, verweist die Vielzahl an Tapisserien aus dieser Zeit und deren Wirkungsmacht auf eine andere Lebens- und Bilderwelt, welche dieser entmaterialisierten Vorstellung von Kunst widerspricht. In seiner Auseinandersetzung mit Tapisserien aus der Zeit um 1520 verweist Weddigen auf die Existenz mehrerer paralleler Erz瓣hlungen der Kunst der Renaissance. Diese ?berlegung bezieht sich nicht nur auf die Einbeziehung des Materials in die Interpretation der fr羹hneuzeitlichen Kunst, sondern auch auf die anachronistische Raumwirkung der Tapisserien, die sich nicht an der Tiefenwirkung und Erfindung der Zentralperspektive orientierte.

Um die Darstellungsweise ihrer Kunst besser nachvollziehen zu k繹nnen, werden zu Beginn die Begriffe wie der der Utopie, Dystopie und der der Naiven Malerei definiert. Anschlie?end wird der afroamerikanische K羹nstler Bill Traylor analysiert. Hierbei wird auf seine Biografie eingegangen und zwei seiner Werke werden herangezogen, anhand welcher die Thematik exemplarisch untersucht und belegt wird. Da er in seiner Kunst eine Utopie erschafft, werden die utopischen Merkmale in seinen Bildern herausgearbeitet und dargestellt. Daraufhin wird der afroamerikanische K羹nstler Horace Pippin untersucht. Zugleich wird auf seine Geschichte als Soldat eingegangen. Weiterhin werden zwei seiner Werke studiert und auf dystopische Merkmale analysiert. Nicht alle Bilder der K羹nstler veranschaulichen eine Traumaverarbeitung. Aus diesem Grund wurden in dieser Arbeit bewusst Werke ausgesucht, die die Merkmale der Utopie und Dystopie aufweisen anhand derer Traumaverarbeitung belegt werden kann. Im darauffolgenden Abschnitt wird eine vergleichende Untersuchung durchgef羹hrt, indem die Darstellungsweisen in den Werken Yellow and Blue House with Figures and Dog, Kitchen Scene, Yellow House, The Ending of the War: Starting Home und The Holy Mountain III gegen羹bergestellt werden. Dieser Abschnitt liefert die Antwort auf die Frage, inwiefern eine Darstellung von Utopie oder Dystopie in den Werken erkennbar ist. Infolgedessen schlie?t das Fazit die Arbeit ab.
Khingila vs. Buddhist Caves
This monograph is meant for the researchers of South Asian studies with a focussed interest on the history and art of the late fifth century CE.The new study proposes a reconstructive chronology of the times. It clarifies that the fifth-century rock-cut monuments of India were all Buddhist with only a few exceptions. The excavations had begun in the peaceful times of circa 461/462 CE. However, by circa 480 CE all the cave temples were abandoned even before completion. The study re-examines the cause of the abandonment and presents some new revelations.It was ca. 465 CE when the Hephthalite Hūṇs attacked the Early Alchon Hūṇs in the Greater Gandhāra region forcing the Buddhist monks to disperse inter alia towards the Deccan, which was then peaceful. Many Buddhist rock-cut sites were flourishing there under the Gupta-Vākāṭaka-Traikūṭakas: Bagh, Ajanta, Ellora, Mahāḍ, Dhārāśiva (Jain), Banoṭī, Ghaṭotkaca, Nasik, Loṇāḍ, Kondavite, and Kanheri.The ousted Alchons led by Mahāṣāhi Khīṅgīla (r. ca. 440 to 492-496 CE) advanced into India and came up to the Narmada-Tapti valleys. The new intrusions witnessed many battles, particularly those of ca. 469, 472, and 477 CE wherein many great Indian emperors and kings were perished: Kumāragupta I, Nāgabhaṭa, Ghaṭōtkacagupta, Skandagupta, Narasimhagupta, Narendra Sena, Ravisāmba, Kumāragupta II, Hari Ṣeṇa, and Dahrasena.These disturbances in India now forced the migrant Gandhāran and the resident Deccani monks to escape to distant lands including Kucha in Central Asia. Consequently, there was catalysed the Kuchean Period III, which witnessed the introduction of many Gandhāran and Deccani ideas.Finally Buddhagupta ousted the Alchons in ca. 478 CE. The persistent defeat had taught the Alchons a lesson. They now imbibed the Indian values of liberalism as statecraft, which allowed them unobstructed rule for the next one century and two decades (ca. 479-ca. 600 CE) when they ruled from Greater Gandhāra to the Narmada valley.The new picture comes out when we attempt to synchronise and iron out the anachronisms from the known chronologies of the Early Alchons, Early Guptas, Vākāṭakas, Traikūṭakas, Gandhāra, and the rock-cut monuments of India and Kucha in the late 5th century CE. It is revealed that the monasteries were abandoned due to the attacks by the Early Alchon Hūṇs.

So verh瓣lt es sich auch im sakralen Bereich mit St瓣tten, an denen die Jungfrau Maria Wunder vollbracht haben soll. Diese sogenannten Gnaden- oder Kultbilder, die h瓣ufig die Muttergottes mit Kind abbilden, sind insbesondere in Wallfahrtskirchen, Kapellen oder bestimmten heiligen Orten zu finden. Bekannt, und allgemein akzeptiert, sind die Bildwerke der Muttergottes von der Romanik bis etwa zum Barock, deren Inkarnat eine helle oder polychrome Fassung aufweist. Eine besondere Aufmerksamkeit wird den sogenannten Schwarzen Madonnen beigemessen, deren Hautfarbe braun oder sogar schwarz ist. Durch ihre au?ergew繹hnliche F瓣rbung und prunkvolle Inszenierung, ziehen sie Gl瓣ubige aus aller Welt an und waren Ausl繹ser von zahlreichen Wallfahrten, die noch heute im gro?en Rahmen praktiziert werden. Auch erlangten sie durch prominente W羹rdentr瓣ger eine besondere Verehrung und wurden in einigen L瓣ndern sogar zu National- oder Regionalheiligen hochstilisiert. Weshalb ist die abendl瓣ndische Madonna schwarz, und warum 羹ben gerade diese schwarzen Bildwerke eine besondere Faszination auf die Gl瓣ubigen aus? Diese Frage wurde von der kunsthistorischen Forschung bislang unzureichend beantwortet und soll daher in dieser Arbeit analysiert und kritisch beleuchtet werden.

F羹r die Kunsthistorik handelt es sich hierbei um ein interessantes Einzelst羹ck. Allerdings wurde der tragenden Rolle als seltene Darstellung einer zeitgen繹ssischen Frau, sowohl als Portrait als auch in Kombination mit der symboltr瓣chtigen R羹ckseite, welche es der Kunstform Medaille m繹glich macht, gleichzeitig 羹ber Tugenden zu berichten, wenig Beachtung geschenkt. Es soll untersucht werden, welcher Funktion die Medaille dienen sollte und wie das Portrait zum damaligen Frauenbild steht. Um dies in einem gen羹genden Umfang zu erl瓣utern, werden zuerst die 瓣u?eren Umst瓣nde, auch im Bezug auf die Rolle der Frau, zur Entstehungszeit der Medaille erl瓣utert. Bei der Medaille handelt es sich um einen au?ergew繹hnlichen Zeitzeugen, denn die Medaille Cecilias ist nicht nur die einzige Portraitmedaille, die Pisanello in seinem Leben von einer Frau schuf, sie ist auch das einzige Werk des K羹nstlers aus Mantua, was sowohl mit seiner Unterschrift und Datum (1447), versehen ist. Weiterhin ist Pisanellos Portraitmedaille von Cecilia Gonzaga das erste Medaillenportrait einer zeitgen繹ssischen Frau seit der Antike.

Zu diesem Zweck wird zuerst der Versuch einer Begriffsdefinition von, Bildern" unternommen, um festzustellen, was diese darstellen (k繹nnen) und wozu sie in Zusammenspiel mit subtiler Symbolik in der Lage sind. Anschlie?end werden drei Werke europ瓣ischer K羹nstler analysiert, die Elemente chauvinistischer Kunst enthalten und beispielhaft wiedergeben, welche Konsequenzen eine mono-perspektivische Sicht auf die Welt und deren Bev繹lkerung haben kann. Seit seiner Existenz hat der Mensch unterschiedliche Wege der Kommunikation mit seinen Artgenossen gesucht. Der Prozess der interpersonellen Kommunikation mittels visueller Zeichen und Symbole wurde dabei durch die neolithische Revolution und der dadurch beschleunigten Entstehung von St瓣dten und Kulturen, die Zentren individueller Kreativit瓣t und k羹nstlerischen Schaffens darstellen, beg羹nstigt. Kunst und Symbolik geben also nicht nur bestimmte F羹hl- und Denkweisen der Zeit ihrer Entstehung wieder, sondern teilen diese auch der Nachwelt mit, die diese in Abh瓣ngigkeit von einer zeitgen繹ssischen Mentalit瓣t auf eine andere Art und Weise interpretieren k繹nnen.

Rezeption des Gem瓣ldes in sich, welche sich einerseits historisch und lokal an die Eisenbahnstrecke zwischen Maidenhead und Taplow, der Great Western Railway und dem sich dort befindenden Viadukt angliedert, jedoch ebenso viel Freiraum f羹r die These bietet, dass Turner hier die historische Ver瓣nderung des alten zum neuen England bzw. die Symbiose von alt und neu durch die Dampfkraft und deren erzeugten Fortschritt, wie oben schon genannt, aufgreift oder eben auch die Elementargewalten Sturm und Dampf hier in Szene setzen m繹chte. Die Unm繹glichkeit des Stillstandes der Progression und das Verlieren des Alten sind zwei nicht aufzuhaltende Dinge im Wandel der Zeit, welche gerade zur Zeit K繹nigin Victorias wohl von eklatanter Bedeutung waren, da unter ihr die Entwicklung der Dampfkraft voranschritt.

Insbesondere die Geschichte David gegen Goliath, als der kleine Hirtenjunge David dem gro?en Philister Goliath in einem Zweikampf gegen羹bertrat und diesen ohne gro?e M羹he mit seiner Steinschleuder besiegte, ist in verschiedenen Variationen dargestellt worden. Darstellungen vom Triumph des David nach dem Sieg 羹ber Goliath sind allerdings weniger bekannt, wurden aber genauso h瓣ufig dargestellt wie andere Szenen der Davidgeschichte.

Gallucci’s Commentary on D羹rer’s ’Four Books on Human Proportion’
In 1591, Giovanni Paolo Gallucci published his Della simmetria dei corpi humani, an Italian translation of Albrecht D羹rer's Four Books on Human Proportion. While D羹rer's treatise had been translated earlier in the sixteenth-century into French and Latin, it was Gallucci's Italian translation that endured in popularity as the most cited version of the text in later Baroque treatises, covering topics that were seen as central to arts education, connoisseurship, patronage, and the wider appreciation of the studia humanitatis in general.The text centres on the relationships between beauty and proportion, macrocosm and microcosm: relationships that were not only essential to the visual arts in the early modern era, but that cut across a range of disciplines - music, physiognomics and humoral readings, astronomy, astrology and cosmology, theology and philosophy, even mnemonics and poetry. In his version of the text, Gallucci expanded the educational potential of the treatise by adding a Preface, a Life of D羹rer, and a Fifth Book providing a philosophical framework within which to interpret D羹rer's previous sections.This translation is the first to make these original contributions by Gallucci accessible to an English-speaking audience. Gallucci's contributions illuminate the significance of symmetry and proportion in the contemporary education of the early modern era, informing our understanding of the intellectual history of this period, and the development of art theory and criticism. The Afterlives of Greek Sculpture
The Afterlives of Greek Sculpture is the first comprehensive, historical account of the afterlives of ancient Greek monumental sculptures. Whereas scholars have traditionally focused on the creation of these works, Rachel Kousser instead draws on archaeological and textual sources to analyze the later histories of these sculptures, reconstructing the processes of damage and reparation that characterized the lives of Greek images. Elma believed she had an original Raffaello painting, and she wanted to know whether the story told by her aunt Anna was correct.Nicole fell in love with this painting, and the story fascinated her. Die derzeit noch existierenden, unterschiedlichen Darstellungsformen, sowie die uneinheitliche Namensgebung der byzantinischen Marienikonen evozieren die Frage nach den bestehenden Grundtypen und deren Weiterentwicklung.
Thomas Paine in Lewes 1768-1774 Second Edition 2020
Thomas Paine developed his political and economic thought in Lewes the County Town of East Sussex. He was selected from 2700 officers of excise to write the pamphlet The Case of the Officers of Excise. Plucked from obscurity Paine learnt the skills in Lewes to write Common Sense just after he left Lewes for the North American Colonies. This book shows Lewes as a dissenting, bustling independent town, a place where Paine could sit as a Juryman on the Court Leet and oversee the poor law. This is a collection of essays showing a general overview of Paine's life by Colin Brent. A detailed account of Paine's first pamphlet by Paul Myles and stories about General Gage by Deborah Gage. There are 40 coloured illustrations and photographs, original documents and stunning views of Lewes painted in 1769 and 1768 by Dominic Serres. An essay by Susan Morris describes the paintings and the provenance with a history of Serres as well. Dr Seth Gopin, the art historian from New York writes the Preface, he was involved in the research and steadied Paul Myles through the research period and beyond. Both men, Thomas Pain and Thomas Gage both resided, in part, just 5 miles away from each other in Lewes, Paine in Bull House in the High Street and Thomas Gage at the family seat at Firle Place in Glynde, just outside Lewes. Both were made members of the American Philosophical Society and remained so for the rest of their lives. That these two men were so highly instrumental on the opposite sides of the War of Independence, and were so closely linked to Lewes is astonishing. Firle Place has on display General Gage's Document Chest and his Freedom Document from the city of New York, Paine is celebrated in the town of Lewes. Not before has the link been properly made between these two men from either side of the North American Conflict and either side of the class divide.
