The Global Eye
A volume dedicated to Albrecht D羹rer's series of woodcuts illustrating the Passion of Christ. An astonishing sixteenth-century demonstration of virtuosic printmaking The Global Eye. Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese Maps in the Collections of the Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici is the companion catalogue to the exhibition of the same name. For the first time, it presents all 82 'Castello' maps in color. The maps are so named because from the end of the eighteenth century until their transfer to the Laurentian Library in 1921 they decorated the rooms of the Medicean villa of Castello outside Florence. From 1667 to 1669, the young Grand Duke Cosimo III conducted his grand tour, which took him to various countries in Europe. While in the Low Countries on his first journey he purchased 65 maps and hand-drawn views of cities; on his second, longer trip he arrived in Lisbon, where he bought copies of maritime maps. The collection of maps and colonial vistas from Holland, Portugal and Spain provide us with insight into the shape of the world in the mid-17th century as well as information about the circulation of people and ideas. The catalog describes and accurately analyzes each map while providing details on the places shown and the contents of the legends and captions, when these are present. The essays discuss the history of the maps, from the time of their purchase by the grand duke to their arrival at the Laurentian Library.
Bright Colours from the Past
The invention of Mauveine by Perkin in 1856 led to a revolution in the world of textile dyeing. In the second half of the 19th century, natural dyes were quickly replaced by newly developed synthetic dyes which resulted in a bright palette of colours. The synthetic dyes were not only cheaper to produce, but also easier to apply on textiles due to new dyeing mechanisms. As a result, production costs decreased tremendously and brilliantly dyed textiles became available to the larger public. The introduction of synthetic dyes had a strong impact in fashion; in addition, these colourants were also used as stains on furniture, as inks and in paints. In this publication, the development of these vivid colourants is presented. It brings together information about the history of synthetic dyes, including the first attempts, the so-called semi-synthetic dyes, and presenting the most relevant dyes and dye classes, such as nitro dyes, tri-arylmethanes, azo dyes, xanthenes, sulfur dyes, synthetic alizarin and synthetic indigo. It contains a wealth of information regarding the numerous synonyms, trade names, manufacturers and patents. International trade and competition, which was fierce, are discussed. The chemistry behind the synthetic dyeing is explained, including new dyeing technologies developed. The application of dyes and their fastness properties are also presented. An overview of analytical techniques used for characterisation is given. Many case studies are included, expressing the importance of the dyes and the creativity of mankind when applying these colourants. As such, this publication can be seen as a colourful journey through history, relevant for conservators, curators, historians, chemists and all who are interested in the history and development of synthetic dyes.
The Art of Kaylene Whiskey
Kaylene Whiskey (b. 1976) creates dazzling paintings with brightly colored pop stars rendered in dots and set among her own community in remote Central Australia. She depicts female pop culture icons---including Dolly Parton, Tina Turner, Catwoman, Cher, and Wonder Woman---woven into the Kungkarangkalpa Tjukurpa, or Seven Sisters Story. These heroines, however, are shown partying at Iwantja Arts, where Whiskey works in Indulkana, South Australia.Her journal--doodle style---laden with text bubbles, hearts, and rainbows--delivers lighthearted humor while channeling potent symbols of female power in an Aboriginal setting. Presenting original research findings and proposing novel connections between penal and visual history, this book investigates how artists and other inmates attempted to communicate their captivity by pictorial means. The prisons of Paris were characterized by distinctive scopic regimes from 1793 until 1894, especially the ascendant cellular jail, in which visibility was a central element of punitive practices. As authorities imposed increasing invisibility on detainees, artists such as Hubert Robert, Jacques-Louis David, Honor矇 Daumier, Gustave Courbet, Armand D矇sir矇 Gautier, Maximilien Luce, and Th矇ophile Steinlen, among others, spent time behind bars grappling with representational strategies that almost always required conjoining words and images. The artists' prison was an ekphrastic site par excellence, a topography whose space could be depicted only when its words--graffiti, inscriptions, regulations--were bestowed legibility as signs. Penitentiary bureaucrats and criminologists analogously seized on the words and images through which inmates contested their invisibility to develop theories on recidivism, graffiti, and the "aesthetics of criminality," an ersatz study of inmate representations. The visual output scrutinized here is not mere illustration; these creations help fuse an integrated narrative showing how prison, art, and politics shaped each other.

The rest of the publication is, like the exhibition, divided into three sections: the first, 'Three Thousand Years of History and a Few Memorable Reigns', seeks to outline the profile of the Pharaohs who were regarded, in their time, as worthy of being remembered for posterity. The second section, 'What Remains of the Pharaohs? History and Legends', looks at the way the memory of some of these figures was recovered, and at the same time transformed, by the literature of Greco-Roman antiquity, giving rise to myths that survived for centuries. The final section, 'Return of the Pharaohs', reveals how the birth of the discipline of Egyptology led to new scientific knowledge of Ancient Egypt, which also paved the way for the rediscovery of some Pharaohs, who were thus propelled into stardom. As well as featuring abundant illustrations of the works on display throughout the texts, the publication also includes a section of chronological references related to Ancient Egypt and a list of all the Pharaohs in history.

This publication explores this aspect of his activity, bringing together a large number of Japanese prints from the 17th to the 19th centuries. This lesser known facet of the collector's activity was explored in the exhibition Floating world: 'ukiyo-e' Japanese prints, which presented a large number of Japanese prints produced between the 17th and 19th centuries that belong entirely to the Museum's collection. The exhibition focused on the concept of ukiyo, which means 'floating world' and refers to the fleeting pleasures of everyday life. The catalogue is divided into two parts. The first is a set of four essays, including three by the exhibition curators. In the first text, Jorge Rodrigues explores the set of prints acquired by Calouste Gulbenkian for his collection. Francesca Neglia then looks at two of the most popular iconographic themes in ukiyo-e: the figure of the courtesan and landscapes. In the third essay, Hannah Sigur discusses the literary network associated with ukiyo-e. Finally, Rui Xavier, Preventive Conservation Coordinator at the Gulbenkian Museum and curator of the Gulbenkian Collection's lacquerware, writes about the damage sustained by the collection of Japanese prints after the 1967 Lisbon's floods and the remarkable restoration process that followed. The second part of the publication is similar in structure to the accompanying exhibition sections and includes texts on specific works or groups of works. The first chapter, 'Different views of nature and landscape', deals with landscape painting as an autonomous genre of ukiyo-e; in 'Uki-e' perspective images, the focus is on uki-e, a genre of prints made by adopting Western geometric perspective; Yoshiwara's 'floating world' revolves around the authorized leisure district of Edo (present-day Tokyo) and its influence on the production of prints depicting women; 'Ukiyo-e's literary web' deals with the unique and contradictory relationship between scholarly literature and poetry and the main protagonists in the 'floating world', such as kabuki theater actors and the so-called 'women for play'; finally, 'The Tōkaidō Stations' covers the famous print series of the same name, comprising prints on various themes related to the Tōkaidō route, which ran from Edo to the imperial city of Kyoto.

The catalogue includes pieces of exceptional quality from the various periods when art in pharaonic Egypt was at its height and, not only covers the pieces on display at the Museum, but also those kept in the storeroom. Continuing the publication program that aims to disseminate the Collection through albums that present specific sections in a systematic manner, this volume focuses on Egyptian Art. The section was first studied by Christiane Desroches-Noblecourt, when the pieces that would be included in the Museum's permanent exhibition were selected, and first published in 1991 by the curator of the section, Maria Helena Assam. 15 years on, new texts have been written by Egyptologist Lu穩s Manuel de Ara繳jo, a professor at the Arts Faculty of the University of Lisbon. Calouste Gulbenkian mostly assembled his collection of Egyptian art between 1922 and 1929. Relatively small but very diverse, it includes pieces of exceptional quality from the various periods when art in pharaonic Egypt was at its height. The catalogue not only covers the pieces on display at the Museum, but also those kept in the storeroom.
