The Rock Art of Moab, Utah
The image of the desert bighorn sheep everywhere adorns the canyon walls of the American Southwest. Whether painted or pecked onto the rock, these sheep can take on an amazing variety of box-like or streamlined designs. There are, for instance, sheep with heads that have short horns, sweeping rainbow horns, and, sometimes, iconic, curling ram horns. Sheep have legs that are shown with simple extremities, with bent legs as if they are running, with cloven hooves facing front or back, and even sheep with no legs at all. Are the long-gone artists trying to hint at a hidden code, or are the differences simply a preference in artistic style? We will probably never know the full story, but insights are to be had after a thorough inventory of rock art images are catalogued and studied. This is a matter of increased importance as our heritage of petroglyphs and pictographs is being lost to time and vandalism.

The Global Eye
A volume dedicated to Albrecht D羹rer's series of woodcuts illustrating the Passion of Christ. An astonishing sixteenth-century demonstration of virtuosic printmaking The Global Eye. Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese Maps in the Collections of the Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici is the companion catalogue to the exhibition of the same name. For the first time, it presents all 82 'Castello' maps in color. The maps are so named because from the end of the eighteenth century until their transfer to the Laurentian Library in 1921 they decorated the rooms of the Medicean villa of Castello outside Florence. From 1667 to 1669, the young Grand Duke Cosimo III conducted his grand tour, which took him to various countries in Europe. While in the Low Countries on his first journey he purchased 65 maps and hand-drawn views of cities; on his second, longer trip he arrived in Lisbon, where he bought copies of maritime maps. The collection of maps and colonial vistas from Holland, Portugal and Spain provide us with insight into the shape of the world in the mid-17th century as well as information about the circulation of people and ideas. The catalog describes and accurately analyzes each map while providing details on the places shown and the contents of the legends and captions, when these are present. The essays discuss the history of the maps, from the time of their purchase by the grand duke to their arrival at the Laurentian Library.
Bright Colours from the Past
The invention of Mauveine by Perkin in 1856 led to a revolution in the world of textile dyeing. In the second half of the 19th century, natural dyes were quickly replaced by newly developed synthetic dyes which resulted in a bright palette of colours. The synthetic dyes were not only cheaper to produce, but also easier to apply on textiles due to new dyeing mechanisms. As a result, production costs decreased tremendously and brilliantly dyed textiles became available to the larger public. The introduction of synthetic dyes had a strong impact in fashion; in addition, these colourants were also used as stains on furniture, as inks and in paints. In this publication, the development of these vivid colourants is presented. It brings together information about the history of synthetic dyes, including the first attempts, the so-called semi-synthetic dyes, and presenting the most relevant dyes and dye classes, such as nitro dyes, tri-arylmethanes, azo dyes, xanthenes, sulfur dyes, synthetic alizarin and synthetic indigo. It contains a wealth of information regarding the numerous synonyms, trade names, manufacturers and patents. International trade and competition, which was fierce, are discussed. The chemistry behind the synthetic dyeing is explained, including new dyeing technologies developed. The application of dyes and their fastness properties are also presented. An overview of analytical techniques used for characterisation is given. Many case studies are included, expressing the importance of the dyes and the creativity of mankind when applying these colourants. As such, this publication can be seen as a colourful journey through history, relevant for conservators, curators, historians, chemists and all who are interested in the history and development of synthetic dyes.

Kaylene Whiskey (b. 1976) creates dazzling paintings with brightly colored pop stars rendered in dots and set among her own community in remote Central Australia. She depicts female pop culture icons---including Dolly Parton, Tina Turner, Catwoman, Cher, and Wonder Woman---woven into the Kungkarangkalpa Tjukurpa, or Seven Sisters Story.
