Picasso/Asia
Why is Pablo Picasso so famous the world over? How does Picasso, the quintessential modern artist of the twentieth century but also undeniably a European, relate to the work of contemporary artists in other parts of the world, such as Asia? And what do Picasso and his legacy mean in an age and a place that are far from his own? These are some of the fundamental questions explored in Picasso/Asia, which accompanies a major exhibition at M+, Hong Kong. At its heart are two intertwined narratives. First, Picasso's life and artistic practice are interpreted through the four archetypes of the creative genius, the outsider looking in, the consummate magician, and the endlessly inquisitive student of art history. Secondly, the fresh interpretation of Picasso's oeuvre is placed "in conversation" with the works of Asian artists, thereby revealing what Picasso's art can tell us about artistic practice today, and vice versa. A visual timeline shows how Asian art and artists migrated to Europe during Picasso's lifetime and became an unavoidable part of his cultural context and milieu, as well as describing Picasso's reception in Asia from the 1910s right up to the end of the 20th century.A bold exploration of complex relationships between origin and reception, invention and adaptation, West and East, this book enriches the discourse on transnational contemporary Asian art and visual culture, while contributing to the growing critical literature on global art history.

Gentile Bellini's Portrait of Sultan Mehmed II
In 1479, the Venetian painter Gentile Bellini arrived at the Ottoman court in Istanbul, where he produced his celebrated portrait of Sultan Mehmed II. An important moment of cultural diplomacy, this was the first of many intriguing episodes in the picture's history. Elizabeth Rodini traces Gentile's portrait from Mehmed's court to the Venetian lagoon, from the railway stations of war-torn Europe to the walls of London's National Gallery, exploring its life as a painting and its afterlife as a famous, often puzzling image. Rediscovered by the archaeologist Austen Henry Layard at the height of Orientalist outlooks in Britain, the picture was also the subject of a lawsuit over what defines a "portrait"; it was claimed by Italians seeking to hold onto national patrimony around 1900; and it starred in a solo exhibition in Istanbul in 1999. Rodini's focused inquiry also ranges broadly, considering the nature of historical evidence, the shifting status of authenticity and verisimilitude, and the contemporary political resonance of Old Master paintings. Told as an object biography and imagined as an exploration of art historical methodologies, this book situates Gentile's portrait in evolving dialogues between East and West, uncovering the many and varied ways that objects construct meaning.

Festival Emblems
In early modern culture, civic festivals and emblem books were amongst the more privileged genres of Early Modern culture. Although both are connected in their use of word and image, they are nonetheless separated in their very essence. The former, a public event celebrated usually at night and involving, alongside ephemeral monuments, lights, fireworks, music, ceremonies, and theater performances, was for the spectator an all-encompassing experience. It was intended to propagate either the ruler or the city's political agenda. The latter was conceived as an intellectual pastime and intended to be read, deciphered, and discussed within the private sphere, in the company and studious ambiance of the literati. Emblems and festivals, nonetheless, maintained a kind of symbiotic exchange. Whereas public monuments of the triumphal entries found their way into the printed form of festival books, emblems migrated from their printed form into the public sphere, where they were used to adorn the ephemeral monuments of the triumphal entries. How then, do the practices of emblem reading, which require careful decryption of words and images, relate to the viewing practices of triumphal processions? The book examines this paradox and argues that the inclusion of emblems in festivals reveals the hermeneutic mechanism of the learned. By using emblems, the designers of civic festivals marked their territory within the power hierarchies and established their dignity and authority as experts in both the civic and intellectual circles. In the festival ambit, festival emblems epitomize the perfect paradoxical union of persuasion and erudition.
Creation and Creativity in Medieval Art
Creation imagery in manuscripts made in the Middle Ages became a locus for visual experimentation as well as the expression of ideas about creativity. By examining representations of divine creation and illustrations of the creation stories in Genesis, this book links medieval ideas about creation, the characteristic of the Divine Creator, and the act of creation with themes in medieval thought about the work of medieval artists., Case studies from manuscripts illuminating the creation dating from the eleventh to the fourteenth century (Junius 11/The C疆dmon Manuscript, Roda Bible & Ripoll Bible, Bible moralis矇es, Hamburg Bible, Holkhalm Bible) reveal self-reflective moments; where medieval artists relate artistic invention and theological debates about creation. This book traces the artists' thinking in their own work and then contextualizes those visual cues within the context of philosophical arguments about the creation of the world. It also considers how Western medieval artists, in inventing original illuminations and experimenting with new representational modes, suggest potential analogies between their own work, God's acts of creation, and nature's generative force.

Glitching the ’Machine Artist’
"a blueprint for critical resistance and aesthetic defiance in the face of digital capitalism and a rising new age" - Laila Shereen Sakr/ VJ Um Amel Fear of the 'machine artist' reflects a deep cultural anxiety about industrialization, shaped by unresolved conflicts over automation and its potential to supplant human artists. Automated machinery represents both a technical development and a social paradigm that redefines labor, authorship, and creativity itself.Glitching the 'Machine Artist' is neither utopian nor dystopian. It offers the first comprehensive theory connecting Glitch Art to its industrial foundations. By blending analysis, theory, and criticism, this book shows how debates over AI continue a centuries-long negotiation between human agency and automation. It links these generative technologies to the assembly line and industrialization while exploring their aesthetic influence on art. By analyzing how photography functioned as the original 'machine artist, ' this book explains why current fears about AI-generated art echo historical anxieties about objectivity, originality, and human agency. Glitch Art offers a unique vehicle to examine these entanglements. From eighteenth-century Romanticism through to analogue and digital media, artists have responded to technological innovation in three distinct ways: either by emphasizing the artist's handicraft, or in a metaphysical refusal of machinery, or in a formalist embrace of medium-specific 'purity.' The contemporary challenge is to develop strategies to understand, critique, and defy the power of technological change. As AI transforms our world, the future of human agency is in question. The problem for artists, technologists, and everyone concerned with human creativity lies with the links between aesthetics, innovation, and the role of the artist-challenging assumptions about expression versus randomness, originality versus reproduction, and human versus machine. Acknowledging these dynamics opens up the possibility for radical change, beyond merely asserting human agency, or surrendering to technological determinism.
