The Book of Modern Ceremony
For those seeking connection and meaning in their everyday lives, an easy-to-follow, beautiful, and inspiring manual on performing ceremonies for all occasions and milestones, from life transitions and family gatherings to holidays and seasonal changes. For as long as humans have existed, we have performed ceremonies to mark occasions and personal transitions to create meaning and connect with the world, ourselves, and each other. Though ceremony is still a cornerstone of many cultures around the globe, modern rituals are largely confined to just three events: birth, marriage, and death. Without our ancestors' sense of frequent and intentional ceremony, we have lost the power to bring meaning to our everyday lives. The Book of Modern Ceremony is here to change that. Written by sociologist and ceremonialist Shari Dunbar Boyer, this book shares more than 30 ceremonies that can be easily incorporated into contemporary life. There are rituals for life transitions, calendar changes, and personal growth. Some celebrate familiar events, like the Untraditional Birthday or Vow Renewal ceremonies, but others mark important milestones that we often neglect, such as moving to a new home or entering menopause. And of course, there are seasonal rituals for every solstice, equinox, and moon cycle. Presented in easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions, The Book of Modern Ceremony encourages readers to leave behind the daily stressors of life and connect more deeply with themselves, their loved ones, and their own spirituality.
Hope for Cynics
Cynicism is making us sick, but Stanford Psychologist Dr. Jamil Zaki has the cure--a "ray of light for dark days" (Adam Grant, #1 New York Times bestselling author). In 1972, half of Americans agreed that most people can be trusted; by 2018, only a third did. Different generations, genders, religions, and political parties all think human virtue is evaporating. Cynicism is an understandable response to a world full of injustice and inequality. But in many cases, it is misplaced. Dozens of studies find that people fail to realize how kind, generous, and open-minded others really are. Cynical thinking deepens social problems: when we expect the worst in people, we often bring it out of them. We don't have to remain stuck in this cynicism trap. Through science and storytelling, Jamil Zaki imparts the secret for beating back cynicism: hopeful skepticism--thinking critically about people and our problems, while honoring and encouraging our strengths. Far from being na簿ve, hopeful skepticism is a precise way of understanding others that can rebalance our view of human nature and help us build the world we truly want. Developing Recovery Pathways for Mental Health Disorders Through Creative Coproduction
This book explores the potential of Creative Coproduction as a recovery tool for severe mental disorder, using case study examples of patients with Anorexia Nervosa. Written by authors with expertise in both mental health provision and experience of mental health services, the book advocates a creative, co-productive approach to treating mental disorders. Co-production involves significant interaction and collaboration between health and social care professionals, sufferers, recovered patients, educational establishments, families and scientists at all levels of interaction. The book further uses the neuroscience of creativity as a lens by which to identify creative characteristics and actions, discussing ways this can be harnessed to transform recovery pathways through creative practices. Centering the voices of service users and their families alongside mental health professionals, this important book will be valuable reading for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students in health and allied sciences, mental health and social work programmes. It will also be highly relevant for health and social care professionals including mental health nurses, allied practitioners, managers of community mental health teams and community practitioners.
Insights from Music Therapy Practice and Research
This book, drawing on the author's 26 years as a music therapist, explores experience and evidence in music therapy. It asks which experiences count, why, and what is revealed of the cultures of music therapy when some experience is regarded as evidence and some is not. At the heart of music therapy lies a nonverbal phenomenon: shared musical encounter. Those involved can recognise it and respond without words, as 'insiders'. However, what this experience is, and how it relates to evidence, is not widely explored in music therapy practice and research. Furthermore, the investigations which do exist tend to be verbal, even when participants are nonverbal. As an alternative, this autoethnographic book honours the arts-based encounters fundamental to music therapy by offering the reader their own arts-based experience through poems, images, and more. Through them, the reader (or 'Collaborator') is invited to consider the other knowing which comes from arts-based encounter, and its value. Using phenomenological and Aesthetic Critical Realist approaches, this work argues that relational, musical experience central to music therapy is valuable on its own terms as musically mediated, therapeutic evidence of personhood. This challenges the professional status quo which privileges verbal knowledge-creation and evidence measured by outsiders.
