How do we even talk about Palestine and Israel
The world changed on 7th October 2023 when Hamas made incursions into Israeli territory, resulting in 1200 deaths and 251 hostages. The response by Israel's government and military has since brought terrible destruction to Gaza, killing over 60,000 people, with 2.3 million forced from their homes. How have we allowed it to happen? What can we say?One group of twelve child psychiatrists, psychologists and psychotherapists - with children's welfare much in mind - met fortnightly to discuss the insurmountable difficulties of the Palestine-Israel conflict and their feelings about the horror streaming daily on their media. Can such matters be discussed in a group? Can minds be changed? Deep disagreement and pain - yet nothing near the pain experienced in Gaza. Silence can't be the response. Some of the collection's contributors come from Palestinian or Jewish heritage, others from different but divided, conflicted backgrounds. Their history goes back to the Balfour Declaration and to the Holocaust. A mother who lived through Kristallnacht; a father from Jaffa with shrapnel head injuries during the Nakba. The group shares memories, reflections, essays and poems in a courageous effort to urge us all towards sense, empathy and a more complex understanding of the catastrophe before our very eyes.
Becoming Mariposa
What if the painful moments that tried to break you were actually shaping you into who you were meant to become? In Becoming Mariposa, Elizabeth invites you into a raw, transformative journey from a childhood shadowed by trauma to a life radiant with freedom. With unflinching honesty, Elizabeth unravels her story, revealing the resilience of a soul determined to heal. As she emerges, she finds a truth greater than she ever imagined-one that sets her spirit free. This poignant memoir, rich with the imagery of a butterfly's metamorphosis, speaks to those yearning for authenticity and transformation. For survivors of abuse, neglect, spiritual manipulation, grooming, and mental illness, Elizabeth's story is a clarion call: even in the darkest chrysalis, lasting hope awaits. If you've ever felt stuck, silenced, overlooked, or afraid to step into your true power, Becoming Mariposa will help you realize you are not broken...you are becoming.

What's Normal?
What's Normal?, examines the issues of "abnormalities" in mental health, intelligence, and sexual behavior. The first section of What's Normal? presents a wide-ranging collection of essays and articles written by renowned clinicians who address clinical, ethical, and social issues related to mental illness and disorders. The second section uses fiction, poetry, and drama to portray mental and behavioral abnormalities, sometimes from "inside" the perspective of the deviant and sometimes from the experiences of family, friends, and other engaged observers. Excerpts that examine the treatment of mental health, intelligence, and sexual conduct are cited from such literary works as Equus, Of Mice and Men, Like Water for Chocolate, and Sula. The Literature and Medicine Series is extended to encourage those working or living with others outside the norms to be more inclusive and understanding. What's Normal? is an insightful and valuable addition to this series.
Musings from a Kintsukouried Mind
Translated from Japanese, the word kintsukuroi means "to repair with gold." Kintsukuroi is the art of repairing pottery with gold or silver lacquer and understanding that the piece is more beautiful for having been broken. Many people don't recognize that often mental collapse and crisis are the initial stages of a transformational process. Too often people going through mental crisis and spiritual transformation are not well served by the mental health industry. In addition, the process is often not recognized as potentially valuable. The opportunity of growth and greater value as an outcome of such a process is dismissed and ignored. This often causes greater difficulty to the person whose mind has "broken" or "fractured" into pieces in the initial stages of a kintsukuroi-type process.Penni Kolpin describes elements of her journey when she endured a "severe stress breakdown" many years ago. She and presents tools and concepts that helped her through that journey and other concepts that would have helped had she known of them at the time. Penni's musings address concepts including "ego collapse," Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey, spiritual emergency and awakening, quantum, and the relationship between mysticism and what often is named "psychosis."
Sleep And Its Derangements
Sleep and its derangements examines the physiological and pathological aspects of sleep as understood through the lens of medical science. It offers a comprehensive inquiry into the biological necessity of sleep, arguing that mental and physical health rely on it for restorative balance. The book contends that sleep allows the brain to replenish what it loses during periods of activity, suggesting that extended wakefulness exhausts cerebral resources essential for proper functioning. In the opening chapters, the argument centers on sleep as a state not of complete inactivity, but of partial suspension where unconscious mental processes continue in altered form. This concept, termed unconscious cerebration, proposes that thought may persist without conscious awareness, albeit with diminished coherence. The text introduces this idea to pave the way for more detailed discussions of sleep disorders, including insomnia, nightmares, sleepwalking, and the broader neurological consequences of disrupted rest. With references to both physiological observation and clinical insight, the work presents sleep as a complex, semi-conscious state vital to human cognition and physical vitality.
Human Nature And Conduct An Introduction To Social Psychology
Human nature and conduct: An introduction to social psychology is a philosophical work that examines the connections between human behavior, moral values, and social environments. The book argues that traditional moral systems often misinterpret human nature, creating a gap between moral ideals and actual behavior. The author presents the idea that habit forms the foundation of conduct, serving as the link between individual impulses and intelligence. The opening discussion challenges long-held views that see human nature as inherently flawed or dangerous, proposing instead that morality should emerge from an understanding of how people genuinely act within their environments. The author explores how habits are shaped through interactions with social conditions, asserting that morality must be practical, empirical, and responsive to changing circumstances. The work encourages readers to look beyond rigid moral codes and instead adopt a flexible, evidence-based approach to understanding ethical behavior. This approach aims to harmonize moral principles with the realities of personal development and social cooperation.
The Rose of Being
The Rose of Being by Gerry Anne Lenhart, Ph.D., blends Jung's four psychological functions (intuition, sensation, feeling, thinking) with luminous readings of Genesis, mandala symbolism, and cross-cultural myth. The Rose of Being offers a fresh, deeply human map of how consciousness forms-beginning in the womb archetype, moving through the split of ego and soul, and circling back toward wholeness in the Self. Along the way, Lenhart draws on Michael Fordham's developmental insights, the archetypes of the four archangels, Sumerian and Biblical narratives, and love-of-learning prose that invites both scholars and seekers to see their own story in the world's oldest stories. The result is part guidebook, part revelation: a gracefully argued model of individuation that readers can feel as well as understand-ideal for therapists, spiritual directors, book clubs, and anyone longing for a wiser inner compass. If you've ever suspected your life has mythic shape and meaning, this book shows you why-and how to live it.

The Book On Attention
The Book on Attention is a compelling exploration of the complexities surrounding one of the most vital yet neglected faculties of human experience-attention. In an age dominated by distractions, the book reflects on how an onslaught of digital stimuli has eroded our most intrinsic ability to focus. Presented in a narrative that weaves cultural commentary with profound insights from psychology, the author probes the implications of divided focus on individual well-being and societal engagement. Beginning with an examination of 'Attention in the Age of Distraction', the author outlines how technology has reshaped our attention-a landscape punctuated by notifications, alerts, and other digital disturbances. Chapters delve into the psychological mechanisms that dictate our attentional resources and the historical lineage of how people have interacted with attention over time. The hidden costs of our fractured focus are unpacked, illustrating how chronic distraction affects not just personal productivity but also broader implications for emotional health, relationships, and democratic engagement. Each chapter thoughtfully investigates pertinent themes, including the role of aesthetics in environmental design, the neuroscience of focus, and the cultural shifts that govern our attentional landscapes. Key concepts such as mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and metacognitive awareness emerge as essential tools for reclaiming our agency in how we allocate our focus. Innovative practices and techniques aimed at enhancing concentration-rooted in ancient contemplative traditions yet grounded in contemporary science-are offered as pathways to cultivate deeper engagement with the world. From the phenomenology of conscious awareness to the socio-economic implications of attention in the market, the book encapsulates a holistic view of this landscape, encouraging readers to question their habitual engagement with technology while fostering profound self-reflection. Readers will not only emerge with a nuanced understanding of attention's role but will be equipped with tools to reclaim their most precious resource in a world that continually seeks to capture it. Ultimately, The Book on Attention serves both as a clarion call to individual awakening and a societal manifesto-a guide for navigating the intricate dance between technology and humanity's deeper needs for connection and presence. She becomes a priest - her Hail Mary attempt to come in from exile from the human race. What follows is a journey as unlikely as it is deeply human - equal parts sacred and profane, devastating and laugh-out-loud funny. Because the road from rock bottom to the pulpit is anything but a straight line, and the collar doesn't quiet the demons; it just gives them better seats.Laced with sharp Canadian commentary, dark humour, and hard-won depth, this is a story about alienation, addiction, faith, and the stubborn, messy search for community, healing, and love. Come along for the ride - and find out if she finds what she's looking for.
The Dream Codes Lectures
Dr. Aragno has written a scientifically groundbreaking book on mind and psychoanalysis. Using Freud's foundational dream theory Aragno's code-based approach helps us understand the current rapid changes in human evolution. This book is a tour de force, probably one of the most original contributions of this century. -Arnold Richards, MD"Anna Aragno has done it again in another seminal work at a time of scientific interest in semiotic consilience! A pioneer in information theory applied to psychoanalysis and mind, here she adds the semiotics of biology, the human brain, and their evolution. A must read for all interested in psychoanalytic theory and its contributions to knowledge. Her work has inspired me for many years and will be a foundational text in my teaching and writing. It is her usual tour de force." -Eric R. Marcus, MD Supervising & Training Psychoanalyst Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research"Eminent psychoanalytic scholar Anna Aragno dives into the deepest questions of human origins taking us on an exhilarating journey through corridors of interdisciplinary exploration seamlessly blending Freudian dream theory, evolutionary anthropology, contemporary neuroscience, with the pioneering inter-discipline of code biology.Through meticulous analysis and compelling historical narratives, Aragno unveils hidden threads connecting our evolutionary past to our current experience of meaning, ingenuously extending Freud's primary and secondary processes to reveal how the codes of nature give rise to the codes of mind and culture. and what "artificial intelligence" portends for both.Dream Codes reads like a mystery novel of scientific and philosophical detective work! With each page, we are invited to transcend disciplinary boundaries and embark on a voyage of discovery where Freudian metatheory dialogues with modern scientific inquiry to reveal a provocative re-thinking about the origins and nature of human meaning." -Don Favareau, National University of Singapore "I am thrilled to say this uniquely original x-disciplinary volume of integrative thinking is one of the most exciting experiences in recent years. Anna Aragno examines emergent humanism from Freud through a century of advances in brain biology, integrating and enhancing two systems of thought. She explores Barbieri's code-based paradigm through the lens of Freud's Dream theory, cogently applying a lucid exposition of isomorphic coding processes operating across evolutionary layers of biochemistry, neurobiology, and language. Aragno illustrates how Freud's Dream theory, as a specific instance of the copy-code template, links image and affect in primary process thought, enabling an interpretive translation of meaningful human communication making us worthy of the label - sentient Homo sapiens. Aragno, Brava!" -Theodore Shapiro MD Professor Emeritus, Weill Cornell Medicine

Clinical Gestalt Therapy
The purpose of this book is to support and strengthen the trend of integrating the Gestalt approach into psychotherapeutic work with people with mental disorders. The book provides examples of the ideas of author's colleagues and his own attempts to translate the terms of psychopathology into the language in order to enrich both approaches with the novelty that is so necessary for the growth and with strengthening of the professional interest of Gestalt therapists in clinical psychotherapy. The relevance of understanding psychopathological disorders from the perspective of the Gestalt approach, as well as the need to develop adaptive strategies for psychotherapy of people suffering from these disorders, is undoubted. It opens the door to a new space of awareness, experimentation, research, and co-creation that we can explore together with our colleagues and our clients - fellow travelers who are looking for new boundaries of existence and new ways to live in this difficult and ever-changing world. The idea to write the book was fueled by the deep interest I had in the mental world of those who literally feel what is happening in the environment in a different way or those who do not deny reality but do not want to know anything about it and run away from it into neurotic perception or into the "bodily madness" of conversion disorder. I would like to note that working with people with mental disorders in the Gestalt Therapy paradigm not only helped me to step away from the one-sided norm-centered expert position of a clinical psychologist, but also to complete it with a commitment to existential dialogue, as well as the ability to experimentally seek new ways of creative adjustment for each individual client and for myself in this process. In addition, it highlighted my own "dark" spots, and helped me to feel that in humanistic psychotherapy, a specialist firstly is a personality, and only then he or she is a professional. -- Yevgeny Ryaboy
Running Amok
What drives someone to commit the unthinkable? Paul E. Mullen, one of the world's pre-eminent forensic psychiatrists, examines the complex workings of the lone multiple murderer - a spectre haunting modern societies. With unflinching clarity, Mullen draws on his decades assessing massacre perpetrators first-hand, bringing readers into a dark landscape populated both by killers who attained the ugly fame they had sought as well as lesser-known but equally chilling cases. Mullen illuminates the troubling patterns that unite these murderers, such as obsessive rage; personal grievance; fascination with weapons; and yearning for infamy. Their actions are ultimately rooted in their desire for personal destruction, often culminating in suicide. He also considers the impact of media sensationalism on the killers' grandiose fantasies, often inspiring copycat violence, and proposes steps toward better threat assessment and identification of warning signs. Challengingmyths around madness and violence, Mullen reveals the unsettling truth: lone mass killers are not incomprehensible monsters, but deeply disturbed people shaped by knowable forces that, when properly understood, can be countered effectively.
The Happiness Crisis
Chasing what feels easy is a human instinct--but it's only when young people embrace challenges that they become stronger versions of themselves and lead more joyful, meaningful lives. In our happiness-obsessed society, we can become isolated in comfort zones and overly focused on temporary pleasures. Kids naturally do the same. In our effort to protect and help them, we often shield them from discomfort. But are we unwittingly denying them experiences that will form them into strong, capable adults? Could it be that we're training them to believe that challenges ought to be avoided, and that if they're struggling, they're not well?In The Happiness Crisis, global educational leader Jon Eckert speaks from decades of experience, explaining how he has seen parents, teachers, and coaches nurture transformation in kids ages 9 to 22. With practical wisdom, humor, and real-world evidence, he'll show you how toinvite young people into challenges, risks, and adventures;prioritize real-life connections that show others they matter;resist living in echo chambers and chasing fleeting success; andwelcome kids into lives that move beyond circumstantial happiness to lasting joy. Decades from now, the most resilient adults will be the most joyful. They'll know that joy isn't freedom from struggle; it's the fuel that allows them to struggle well.Young people can begin living that way now--if we invite them to.
Global Minds
This book treats 15 different nations as 15 living laboratories for the human mind. This book takes you on a global tour of modern thinking. It explores one powerful idea: every national culture is a large-scale psychological experiment. This collection contains 15 essays, each one a case study of a different country. We will explore how these "experiments" shape how people think, feel, and face the future. You'll visit Japan to see how overwork physically reshapes the brain. You'll travel to the United States to understand how belief itself is structured in a polarized world. Then, you'll see how cognition works under China's algorithmic governance. The book is organized into five parts. We start with how big systems, like work culture and technology, shape you as an individual. Next, we explore how different cultures like Germany, Denmark, and Sweden master their emotional landscapes. Part three gives you practical strategies for building an intentional life, learning from Spain, Singapore, and India. After that, we navigate our hyper-connected world, looking at social intelligence in Brazil, Finland, and South Korea. Finally, the book shows you how to become a "conscious futurist," using lessons from the Netherlands, Nigeria, and Australia. Many books offer simple, universal theories about how to think better. This book is different. It argues that the deepest insights come from studying the divergent ways different cultures are adapting to global challenges like digital saturation and burnout. It moves beyond simplistic cultural stereotypes. For example, instead of just saying "Germans are orderly," this book investigates the psychology of Ordnung (order) as a powerful tool for managing stress. Instead of just talking about "hustle culture," it analyzes the psychology of improvisation and "leapfrog innovation" born from constraints in Nigeria. This book's unique advantage is its rigorous case study method. It connects the dots between public policy, economic systems, and even the structure of a language to your own individual mind. By studying these 15 national "experiments," you will gain a new framework to identify your own cognitive biases, challenge your assumptions, and truly learn to think differently. It is an ongoing shift in our relationship to the world, and one that deserves attention and care as well as time and space to be amongst fellow mourners, to whom we do not need to justify or explain, because they understand where we are. Readers will feel seen rather than being chastised for how they grieve and better understand how to process mourning--and how to help others. Bedtime Stories That Will Terrify Children
What if the stories we tell before sleep... aren't meant to comfort, but to awaken? In this haunting collection of eight stories, Randolph B. Schiffer draws on the psychology of childhood fears and the fragile magic of memory.Bedtime Stories That Will Terrify Children explores the mysteries that live inside us long after the lights go out. Each story is a meditation on fear, love, and the strange inheritance of family-stories of boys, fathers, and the shadows that shape them. They are bedtime stories for adults who still remember the dark. And for children who have always known it was thereThese are not stories to lull children to sleep. They're the stories we tell when there's nothing left to say-except the truth, cloaked in fable.Told in the flickering voice of an aging narrator remembering the tales his father once whispered to him and his brother, this haunting collection confronts childhood fears with sharp wit and quiet terror. A dog that might be a monster. A squirrel that guards the door between worlds. A red plant that eats what it pleases. This is bedtime for grownups. And the monsters are real-because they live in memory."I wrote this book for my children. Not because I had the answers-but because the stories might ask the right questions." Randolph B. Schiffer
