When the Guns Fall Silent
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is becoming an important topic for military leaders as the two wars in Afghanistan and Iraq continue. The diagnosis of PTSD in Soldiers returning from the battlefields is increasing at an alarming rate. Despite the escalating diagnosis of PTSD, undiagnosed individuals continue to cope with stress in their own and unique way, identified as Defensive Coping Mechanisms. This reaction to stress can present itself in the form of any number of behavioral and psychological reactions. It is likely that these behavioral changes could potentially go unrecognized by leaders depending on the severity of the individual's reactions. In some cases, these reactions are maintained for ten to fifteen years as pre-cursors to being diagnosed with PTSD. With the current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq reaching that ten year point, it is possible that the Veteran's Administration (VA) Hospitals will be flooded with discharged service members who are now unable to cope and therefore seek professional treatment. One way that the Army can effectively control the increase in individuals being diagnosed with PTSD, or limit misunderstanding by leaders due to an unreported defensive coping mechanism, is through leader education of defensive coping mechanisms, proper screening by medical personnel well after the prescribed 90-180 days following a deployment, and increased resiliency training in individual Soldiers. Without these measures being implemented, it is possible for Soldiers to use unhealthy defensive coping mechanisms to stress, which may result in Soldiers flooding the medical system years a decade or more later due to their inability to cope any longer. Above all, The Politics of Curiosity asks us to consider the nature and ambivalence of the curious forms of politics that might be taking shape in the shadow of our current attention economy.The "attention economy" has become a household name: we all know our attention is being harvested, commodified and packaged to be sold to advertisers by capitalist platforms. We all complain about it; some of us dream of disconnection; others call to fight back. By focusing on attentional deficits, and by reducing attention to being focused, however, the common view may miss wider stakes, and more promising opportunities. This collective volume provides a new frame of analysis based on three displacements. First, it relocates attentional issues within a triangulation that explores a continuum between attention, distraction and curiosity. Second, it invites us to investigate into the mental infrastructures that socially condition our perceptions and understandings of the world. The Air Force and the rest of the Department of Defense rely on valid information to make National Security decisions. The veracity of the information used to make those decisions can dramatically affect which course of action our military will take. Therefore, it is important that our leaders be able to recognize if they are being deceived. This study examines the results of training five categories of deception cues to 190 Air Force Officers. The officers were tested to determine their baseline deception detection abilities, then trained on the deception cues, Arousal, Emotion, Cognitive Effort, Communicator Tactics, and Memory Processes, then retested to determine how much information they retained. When the Guns Fall Silent
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is becoming an important topic for military leaders as the two wars in Afghanistan and Iraq continue. The diagnosis of PTSD in Soldiers returning from the battlefields is increasing at an alarming rate. Despite the escalating diagnosis of PTSD, undiagnosed individuals continue to cope with stress in their own and unique way, identified as Defensive Coping Mechanisms. This reaction to stress can present itself in the form of any number of behavioral and psychological reactions. It is likely that these behavioral changes could potentially go unrecognized by leaders depending on the severity of the individual's reactions. In some cases, these reactions are maintained for ten to fifteen years as pre-cursors to being diagnosed with PTSD. With the current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq reaching that ten year point, it is possible that the Veteran's Administration (VA) Hospitals will be flooded with discharged service members who are now unable to cope and therefore seek professional treatment. One way that the Army can effectively control the increase in individuals being diagnosed with PTSD, or limit misunderstanding by leaders due to an unreported defensive coping mechanism, is through leader education of defensive coping mechanisms, proper screening by medical personnel well after the prescribed 90-180 days following a deployment, and increased resiliency training in individual Soldiers. Without these measures being implemented, it is possible for Soldiers to use unhealthy defensive coping mechanisms to stress, which may result in Soldiers flooding the medical system years a decade or more later due to their inability to cope any longer.
