Adulteration of Children's Sports
The Adulteration of Children's Sports explores current behavioral and physiological research about how children's organized sport has changed; how adults' goals and needs are at the heart of those changes; and the consequences of those changes on children's enjoyment of sport and on their autonomy, creativity, and moral reasoning outside of sport. Adult introduction of early competition, extrinsic rewards, early sport specialization, and year-round participation has thwarted children's intrinsic motivation and contributed to children's attrition from sport. Kristi Erdal explores concerns about the future of sport itself, as adult-mediated selection practices whittle down young athletes earlier on shakier criteria. Parents' and coaches' complicity in these practices, however, is based on intermediaries poorly interpreting (or ignoring) the research literature. Thus, the final chapters of this book are about translating the research into applied ideas for change. Erdal provides an essential introduction to evidence-based research about children's health and well-being in sport and debunks myths along the way. Adults built the problems compiled in this text. We can dismantle them as well.

Slip
Written by journalist and professor at the University of Texas-Austin Mallary Tenore Tarpley, Slip offers a groundbreaking framework for understanding eating disorder recovery and interweaves poignant personal stories, immersive reporting, and cutting-edge science. When Mallary Tenore Tarpley lost her mother at eleven years old, she wanted to stop time. If growing up meant living without her mother, then she wanted to stay little forever. What started as small acts of food restriction soon turned into a full-blown eating disorder, and a year later, Tarpley was admitted to Boston's Children's Hospital. With honesty and grace, Slip chronicles Tarpley's childhood struggles with anorexia to her present-day experiences grappling with recovery. This book tells Tarpley's story, but it also transcends her personal narrative. A journalist by trade, Tarpley interviewed and surveyed hundreds of patients, doctors, and researchers to provide a deeper understanding of eating disorder treatment. She draws on this original reporting, as well as cutting-edge science, to illuminate what has changed in the years since she was first diagnosed. As Tarpley came to learn, "full recovery" from an eating disorder is complicated. And that idea provides the basis for the groundbreaking new framework explored in this book: that there is a "middle place" between sickness and full recovery, a place where slips are accepted as part of the process but progress is always possible. With new insights and an uplifting message, Slip brings much-needed attention to an issue that affects many. It offers a beacon of hope with its revolutionary perspective on recovery. This inspiring and life-affirming book is a must-read for individuals with eating disorders, their loved ones, educators, medical professionals, and anyone seeking to understand eating disorders and the path to recovery.

On Becoming Emotion Focused
A therapy pioneer draws connections between his life and his transformational approach to psychotherapy. The question of whether emotion-focused skills is an inborn talent or can be acquired through learning is an intriguing one. On Becoming Emotion Focused attempts to answer that question - whether such attunement is a product of nature (implicit learning) or nurture (explicit learning) while also illustrating, through the unraveling of author Les Greenberg's personal experiences, how people can best learn to become emotion focused. For Les Greenberg, becoming emotion focused was a theoretical, scientific, and personal journey. The development of a therapeutic manner and skill was far more subjective than the conceptual development of the theory, and involved many individual threads of experience, some explicit, some implicit. In this book, he delves into the core aspects of how he became an emotion-focused psychotherapist, with attempts to make visible what threads informed the development of this approach to theory and practice. The evolution of the theory and practice of emotion-focused therapy (EFT) has been interwoven with Les' life context and personal development, and it has been a delicate balance to give appropriate weight to each. This book is a unique contribution to the field in revealing the contribution of the theorist's life to the development of a major theory and practice in psychology. EFT, perhaps more than any other approach, best exemplifies how the implicit and explicit forces blend together to create holistic understanding.

Family and Contexts of Development
Within developmental psychology, it has been proven that families are a significant context for development. It is also well known that in Latin America, families represent a deeply rooted societal value, yet the continent has often been overlooked within the research base. Family and Contexts of Development offers an eco-cultural and contextualized contribution focusing on how the family functions as a context for development in Latin American throughout the life span. Editors Mariano Rosabal-Coto and Javier Tapia-Balladares bring together leading researchers in the field to present evidence of how both family and culture are prominent dimensions that help us understand development across different life stages. The family unit concentrates dynamics and roles as a core structure, shaped by culture and transmitting culture, through everyday occurrences and specific events. The volume features quantitative, qualitative, and experimental methodologies and draws on cases from Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica, Argentina, and Brazil. Each chapter illustrates that families can play a double role, either as a risk, or a protective factor in development. With the rapid changes to society that are unique to Latin America, new forms and types of families are constantly constructed and challenged. Regardless, this book will highlight that these types of families, in their continuity and in their disruptions, remain as a distinct platform for human development.

The Depression Cure
The go-to, revelatory guide based on Dr. Stephen Ilardi's proven Therapeutic Lifestyle Change (TLC) program--a practical plan for natural ways to treat depression without medication. Now updated with new research. The Depression Cure will change the way we think about and manage depression. Inspired by the extraordinary resilience of aboriginal groups like the Kaluli of Papua New Guinea, Dr. Ilardi prescribes an easy-to-follow, clinically proven program that harks back to what our bodies were originally made for and what they continue to need with these six components: - Nutrition - Fighting Rumination - Antidepressant Exercise - Light Box Therapy - Getting Connected - Healthy Sleep Habits Since the first edition of The Depression Cure was published, depression rates have continued to skyrocket, especially after the upheaval of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Depression Cure's holistic approach has shown to produce positive results at a hope-inspiring rate, even for those who were not improved by traditional medication.

Australia's Schism in the Soul
How has it become possible for the Australian state to gain public acquiescence to develop one of world's most punitive systems of processing asylum-seekers; one that not only contravenes Australia's international humanitarian commitments, but that, in the words of activists, medical professionals, and the detainees themselves amounts to torture? In this highly readable account academic, journalist and advocate Dr Julie Macken takes a psychoanalytic approach to both the country and its public to uncover why. Dr Macken's investigation begins by outlining how the nation's failure to mourn its colonial past has led to a state of collective melancholia, with the result that denial and psychological splitting have prevented genuine reconciliation with First Nations peoples. The central part of the book offers a compelling account of the development of Australia's current system of privatised immigration detention and the political, economic and media forces that have sustained it that will resonate globally. In conclusion the book posits that political action in these circumstances--however distressing and visceral--should be adopted as a mental health strategy for both the person and the nation. This timely work offers fresh insights for those working and studying in the areas of human rights, media, refugee studies, race theory, politics, mental health and psychosocial studies.
