Not only do we suffer, but we also destroy our self-confidence with repeated convictions that we are the only ones who are so confused and at sea, the only ones without a partner and who will be alone (again) on Saturday night.Through fifty touching interviews and captivating portraits by the talented photographer Julia Hawkins, this transformative book uncovers the ways that loneliness touches so many of us. We hear from a diverse array of individuals whose lives have been shaped by isolation - those who feel invisible, misunderstood and alienated, as well as those who have found unexpected paths to understanding and connection. We come to understand that we are not unique in our solitude, and that being alone is a natural part of the human experience - and so we have every reason to hold out a hand to our similarly complicated, kind and lonely neighbours.
Music Between Your Ears
Explores the profound power of music to influence brain function and well-being.Why does music influence how we feel so deeply--and what are the scientific mechanisms behind this phenomenon? In Music Between Your Ears, Dr. Samuel Markind explores the intriguing relationship between music and brain function. Music also helps people learn at any age and in any condition, so it can improve speech, movement, and memory in both healthy individuals and those suffering from illness or injury. Dr. Markind encourages readers to engage actively with music. The Splendor of the Maya
"Explore the collective unconscious from a different angle and perspective than we have seen in the European, Slavic, Celtic, Asian, African, and Middle Eastern cultures," says series editor Michael Escamilla in the foreword to Nancy Swift Furlotti's The Splendor of the Maya: A Journey into the Shadows at the Dawn of Creation. This examination and amplification of K'iche' Maya creation mythology from Mesoamerica fills a gap in Jungian literature by illustrating the contributions to the collective psyche of an important indigenous American culture with which readers may not be familiar. Furlotti's work offers an interesting juxtaposition with the prevailing Western scientific-rationalistic views that have typified psychological inquiry for the past two-and-a-half centuries. Contrasting with the mostly linear orientation of Western scientific and literary traditions, Maya mythology and culture are typified by a cyclical view of time, creation, and experience coupled with an understanding of humanity as in community with--rather than hierarchically superior to--the natural world. Turning to Popol Vuh, or "Dawn of Life," the Maya creation myth that details the repeated creation and destruction of the world, Jungian analyst and scholar Furlotti seeks "to extract the psychological meaning of the myth that may be pertinent to both the collective understanding of myth as well as the individuals' process of what Jung described as individuation." Noting how a culture's myths move hand in hand with its development, Furlotti forges connections with ancient wisdom to reconnect with the foundational metaphors that guide all human experience. The Splendor of the Maya brings fresh perspectives to the collective, often unconscious associations that link the human psyche across time and culture.
Strikingly Similar
Plagiarism and appropriation are hot topics when they appear in the news. A politician copies a section of a speech, a section of music sounds familiar, the plot of a novel follows the same pattern as an older story, a piece of scientific research is attributed to the wrong researcher... The list is endless. Allegations and convictions of such incidents can easily ruin a career and inspire gossip. People report worrying about unconsciously appropriating someone else's work. But why do people plagiarise? How many claims of unconscious plagiarism are truthful? How is plagiarism detected, and what are the outcomes for the perpetrators and victims? Strikingly Similar uncovers the deeper psychology behind this controversial human behavior, as well as a cultural history that is far wider and more interesting than sensationalised news stories.
Tell Me More
This book has three parts. The first part examines deception detection. It looks at lies, lying and liars but also delves into language construction, emotions, physiology, psychology, and more. It explains how microexpressions and statement analysis are reliable deception detectors. It describes how, on their own, the clues and signs of deception are not lie detectors but indicators of deceptive behaviour and speech. Like any forensic tool, it is not what they tell you but what that information can mean in the correct context. A fingerprint on a knife does not, on its own, provide evidence that the fingerprint belongs to the murderer, but only that a particular fingerprint is present on that knife. As we require more proof regarding the knife (what other forensics are present, whose fingerprint it is, etc.), we need more deception indicators beyond a simple choice of word, a flash of emotion, or a physical gesture. The second part discusses microexpressions and statement analysis, the twin tools in reliable deception detection. Both provide valuable clues of deception through the language and vocabulary used by a person, as well as those flashes of emotion and physical gestures that reveal much more than they are telling us directly. We will also look at the history and science behind both and how they have become standard practices for law enforcement worldwide. After all, why should such practical techniques be solely for law enforcement? The third part deals with the interview and examines why interviews are conducted. It looks at the similarities and differences in interview types. It explains how a common approach is the best way to ensure that interviews are successful, productive, and meet their objectives. It is a stand-alone topic and represents time well spent adopting and perfecting the approach detailed in the section. Finally, we will draw it all together and show how this will ensure your interviews are carried out efficiently. By adopting the practices, models and techniques described in this book, you will be so much better placed to ensure that, whatever reason you interview, you will ensure your interviews get results you can rely on that will enable you to make better decisions and draw more correct conclusions with confidence - whether that result is appointing the right person to a role, identifying which staff member is telling the truth, or working out before your partner that the daughter brought Sir John Somebody to an early demise in the new crime series on Netflix.Take what is helpful to you from this volume. It is written so that you may start at the beginning and read through until the end, but it is also intended for those with specific requirements. Feel free to jump to any part that interests you and dip in and out as you wish. But whatever you do, enjoy the content for what it is - an insight into interviewing and deception detection. I do not doubt that once you embrace the concepts and practices within these pages, you will find yourself more at ease in interviews and achieving much better outcomes, whether you are the interviewer or the interviewee.
The Hypocrisy Trap
How our desire to stamp out hypocrisy is backfiring--and how learning to target our criticisms better can improve our politics, business, and personal relationships. In our increasingly distrusting and polarized nations, accusations of hypocrisy are everywhere. But the strange truth is that our attempts to stamp out hypocrisy often backfire, creating what Michael Hallsworth calls The Hypocrisy Trap. In this groundbreaking book, he shows how our relentless drive to expose inconsistency between words and deeds can actually breed more hypocrisy or, worse, cynicism that corrodes democracy itself. Through engaging stories and original research, Hallsworth shows that not all hypocrisy is equal. While some forms genuinely destroy trust and create harm, others reflect the inevitable compromises of human nature and complex societies. The Hypocrisy Trap offers practical solutions: ways to increase our own consistency, navigate accusations wisely, and change how we judge others' actions. Hallsworth shows vividly that we can improve our politics, businesses, and personal relationships if we rethink hypocrisy--soon.

The Essence of Bipolar Disorder
A Groundbreaking Scientific Investigation into the Genetic and Neurological Origins of Bipolar Disorder After a multiyear study of recent advances in neuroscience and genetics, Dr. William J. Walsh has resolved many of the core unknowns about bipolar disorder that have puzzled researchers for more than a century. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Walsh presents a new evidence-based theory of bipolar disorder--offering clarity on a condition that has eluded definitive understanding for decades. Affecting more than seventy million people worldwide, bipolar disorder remains a leading cause of suicide, unemployment, and lost human potential. The Essence of Bipolar Disorder takes readers inside a fascinating medical investigation. Early findings indicated that bipolar is a late onset epigenetic illness involving progressive DNA damage with advancing age. A novel analysis of sixty-three known bipolar risk genes revealed the likely cause of this unique mental illness: Mutated ion channels that impair regulation of neurotransmitters, coincident with accelerated DNA damage. These genetic predispositions generally are not sufficient to trigger bipolar disorder during childhood and adolescence, but continuing DNA damage over many years eventually triggers bipolar onset. These findings led to the discovery of a potassium-ion flooding mechanism that can explain the unique oscillation between mania and depression. Further analysis of neurotransmitter systems identified impaired serotonin neurons as the key drivers of mood-state switching. This innovative theory could transform the future of bipolar disorder research and suggests promising new treatment opportunities. It also opens the door to future DNA and epigenetic screening tools that may identify children at high risk--potentially enabling early, antioxidant-based interventions to prevent illness onset. Dr. Walsh's findings redefine the medical framework for bipolar disorder--offering new hope to those affected by this complex and often devastating condition. This book is essential reading for researchers, clinicians, and mental health professionals dedicated to advancing psychiatric care.
Reframing and Innovating Media Psychology
The field of media psychology has evolved significantly, paralleling advancements in media technology from print and broadcast to today's digital ecosystems. This evolution necessitates updated theoretical frameworks and practical approaches to understand the psychological impacts of media. Reframing and Innovating Media Psychology: Bridging Theories, Applications, and New Horizons addresses this need, bridging foundational theories with innovative perspectives to tackle emerging challenges in the media landscape. The book begins by revisiting traditional theories in media psychology, highlighting their relevance while identifying their limitations in addressing the complexities of modern digital platforms. It proposes a reframed, comprehensive model for understanding media's influence on cognition, emotion, and behavior. Beyond theory, the book explores practical applications, including real-world case studies, education, public health, and ethical considerations. It emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration to enrich understanding and expand the boundaries of media psychology. As media becomes increasingly immersive and pervasive, ethical challenges such as algorithmic bias, misinformation, and the psychological impacts of AI and virtual reality are addressed. The book equips readers with tools to responsibly navigate and influence the media landscape. This work draws on contributions from scholars and practitioners to serve as a resource and inspiration for students, researchers, educators, and practitioners. It calls on readers to critically engage with the ideas presented, aiming to reframe and innovate media psychology to meet the demands of an ever-changing world while enhancing the human experience.
Intersubjectivity in Psychotherapy
The set of relational methods outlined by Integrative Psychotherapy provides a comprehensive guide for intersubjective treatment. Research in child development has stressed the importance of intersubjectivity for the establishment of healthy reciprocal relationships. Several models of psychotherapy have adopted an intersubjective approach to address relational problems. The relational methods of Integrative Psychotherapy put into practice many insights emanating from research regarding the origins of intersubjectivity in child development. The related subset of methods in Integrative Psychotherapy, such as acknowledgment, validation, normalization and presence, become important components in creating an intersubjective format in treatment. Such interventions contribute to building an intersubjective format in individual and group psychotherapy and may prove useful in helping people with early relational failures and the subsequent disruptions to the development of healthy intersubjective aspects of relationships.
How do we even talk about Palestine and Israel
The world changed on 7th October 2023 when Hamas made incursions into Israeli territory, resulting in 1200 deaths and 251 hostages. The response by Israel's government and military has since brought terrible destruction to Gaza, killing over 60,000 people, with 2.3 million forced from their homes. How have we allowed it to happen? What can we say?One group of twelve child psychiatrists, psychologists and psychotherapists - with children's welfare much in mind - met fortnightly to discuss the insurmountable difficulties of the Palestine-Israel conflict and their feelings about the horror streaming daily on their media. Can such matters be discussed in a group? Can minds be changed? Deep disagreement and pain - yet nothing near the pain experienced in Gaza. Silence can't be the response. Some of the collection's contributors come from Palestinian or Jewish heritage, others from different but divided, conflicted backgrounds. Their history goes back to the Balfour Declaration and to the Holocaust. A mother who lived through Kristallnacht; a father from Jaffa with shrapnel head injuries during the Nakba. The group shares memories, reflections, essays and poems in a courageous effort to urge us all towards sense, empathy and a more complex understanding of the catastrophe before our very eyes.
The Challenge of Nihilism and Human Degeneracy
The reluctance to effectively address environmental destruction, overpopulation, and genetic deterioration is frequently attributed to weak political leadership, administrative failures, and economic constraints. This book uncovers an additional, crucial cause underlying this human failure: It is the nihilistic drive that insidiously targets the human species with the aim of undermining life itself. The author identifies the dynamics of Species-Targeting Destructiveness, rooted in the death instinct, examining how it manifests in human behavior and is perpetuated by specific individuals and social groups. To counteract these forces, the author proposes a bio-political solution.ALEXANDER ABDENNUR has worked as a criminal justice researcher with federal research departments and has taught at universities in Canada and abroad. He holds an MA in Criminology and a PhD in Education from the University of Ottawa and is the author of five academic books.
