How We Choose to Show Up

Ingram 出版
2024/11/25 出版

How We Choose to Show Up hands over the keys to a happier, more effective, balanced life. How? By revealing nature's model of how we're designed to thrive.Every day we have a choice: - Do we "Just Show Up," improvising as we go, phoning in our intentions?- Do we "Truly Show Up," living decisive moments with intent?- Or are we "Barely There," struggling to Show Up at all?Showing Up is the invisible system all around us, connecting us to our Society, Situations, Selves, and each other. And it's a contact sport. It's how we lead, whether parenting, coaching, playing, empowering one another, or steering a global company.Showing Up orients us toward a meaningful life.Marcy Axelrod explains this truth clearly and profoundly in How We Choose to Show Up. Through twenty years of research and pragmatic examples, she reveals the roadmap to Truly Show Up more often and with greater ease. At once simple and life changing, readers will deepen their self-grounding, social readiness, and societal connectedness. Understanding what it means to Truly Show Up leads us to relate more human-to-human, inspiring greater health, competence, and confidence. We then infuse this richness into our families, businesses, economy, and the health of our planet.Showing Up is: - How readily we look into each other's eyes, how authentically loved ones relate, how safe and vulnerable we are, and how deeply we listen.- How effectively our schools and workplaces function, how we build prosperous societies, and how we create social equity.- How nations come together toward peace and how our environment heals.Drawing from psychology, neuroscience, and evolutionary biology, this is the crucial playbook for leading an impactful, high-achieving life-all while taking care of the world and each other.

The Whole Person

Ingram 出版
2024/11/25 出版

The Whole Person explores the realms of theory and philosophy concerning minds and persons. This book presents models of the emergent realization of multiple mental processes, and of the constitution of social realities and social persons. Each chapter explores prevalent theoretical and philosophical assumptions that obstruct the acceptance of models depicting emergent realization, offering analyses of these barriers, and demonstrating ways to overcome them. Rooted in the framework of process metaphysics, this book models metaphysically genuine emergence, paving the way for a comprehensive model of multifarious normative emergences. These normative emergences include phenomena such as function-dysfunction, representational truth and falsity, rational-irrational, ethical-unethical, and others that shape our mental and social landscapes. The discussion extends to the macro-evolutionary culmination of mental processes in a model of reflective consciousness. The book then extends its exploration to the foundational role of mental processes in the emergence of social realities and persons, with language acting as a core element in these emergences. Addressing evolutionary aspects, brain processes, developmental processes, moral normativities, and self-consistency considerations, The Whole Person presents a holistic integration of decades of constructive work. Endorsements: "This ambitious, yet unpretentious, carefully constructed and argued book is a must read for anyone with serious interest in the nature of persons and the psychology of personhood. Mark Bickhard's The Whole Person is a sustained and convincing narrative about our individual and collective evolution and emergence as the unique beings that we are. Of particular interest is his account of the emergence of persons as homo-socius. Here, Professor Bickhard captures key, but often overlooked, historical, sociocultural, and socio-developmental dynamics and processes that make us who we are--a species constantly interacting with each other and the world in a never-ending process of mutual co-constitution. By theorizing a process metaphysics replete with emergent normativity that does not clash with a naturalistic ontological psychology, Bickhard takes a giant step toward seeing ourselves as we are and as we might become." -- Jack Martin, Professor Emeritus, Simon Fraser University "A typical psychological theory offers narrow generalizations about data sets obtained by semi-proprietary empirical methods. The basic empirical research on which such theories have depended is in crisis: tremendous effort has gone into ill-motivated studies, applying statistics inappropriately to inadequate samples, too often generating irreproducible results. The kind of theory that psychology needs is broad and deep, pays no respect to boundaries between specialties, makes falsifiable predictions, and answers to arguments in principle. The Whole Person presents just such a theory; psychologists, whether their aim is to extend it and support it or to challenge it and refute it, will benefit from studying it closely." -- Robert L. Campbell, Professor (Emeritus), Psychology, Clemson Universit

Mindmasters

Sandra,Matz  著
Harvard 出版
2024/11/23 出版

A fascinating exploration of how algorithms penetrate the most intimate aspects of our psychology--from the pioneering expert on psychological targeting. There are more pieces of digital data than there are stars in the universe. This data helps us monitor our planet, decipher our genetic code, and take a deep dive into our psychology. As algorithms become increasingly adept at accessing the human mind, they also become more and more powerful at controlling it, enticing us to buy a certain product or vote for a certain political candidate. Some of us say this technological trend is no big deal. Others consider it one of the greatest threats to humanity. But what if the truth is more nuanced and mind-bending than that?In Mindmasters, Columbia Business School professor Sandra Matz reveals in fascinating detail how big data offers insights into the most intimate aspects of our psyches and how these insights empower an external influence over the choices we make. This can be creepy, manipulative, and downright harmful, with scandals like that of British consulting firm Cambridge Analytica being merely the tip of the iceberg. Yet big data also holds enormous potential to help us live healthier, happier lives--for example, by improving our mental health, encouraging better financial decisions, or enabling us to break out of our echo chambers. With passion and clear-eyed precision, Matz shows us how to manage psychological targeting and redesign the data game.Mindmasters is a riveting look at what our digital footprints reveal about us, how they're being used--for good and for ill--and how we can gain power over the data that defines us.

Memory and violence in female submission

Ingram 出版
2024/11/23 出版

Among the different factors that contribute to the maintenance of processes of female submission to violence suffered in the marital sphere, we would highlight the generational transmission of gender protocols (TGPPG) from mother to daughter as the main constructor of female conceptions about their role in the social order. The inheritance of the maternal psyche results in the reproduction of an idealized relationship model that includes motherhood and male protection. Captured by the discursive ambiguity that surrounds the TGPPG, women internalize feelings and behaviours of submission to supposed male authority; unilateral responsibility for maintaining the emotional bond; emotional dependence on men; blame for the dissolution of the emotional relationship; devaluation of their professional skills and, consequently, trivialization of the violence perpetrated against them in a space where they should feel safe.

YOUR destiny Hack.

Udo,Reitter  著
Ingram 出版
2024/11/22 出版

Have you ever wondered if your life is really predetermined? In a world that often seems chaotic, the thought creeps in that our destiny is guided by forces beyond your control. You will realize that behind this belief lies a deep-rooted conviction that brings not only comfort but also overwhelming helplessness. Let's explore together the myths and scientific findings that shape the erroneous belief in the immutability of fate. You may be wondering where the belief in a predetermined destiny comes from. Even in the earliest civilizations, people have tried to decipher the secrets of their existence. Ancient myths and legendary tales, from the Egyptian gods to the Moires of Greek mythology, bear witness to this quest. You realize that the idea of supernatural forces guiding each individual's life is deeply rooted in human culture. These mythical figures created an understanding of order and predestination in an often chaotic world, so you don't feel alone in the time warp of history. The urge to understand and interpret the unknown has shaped you, whether you like it or not. For centuries, the world's great philosophies and religions have perpetuated this idea. You realize that mankind has often found comfort in the belief that fate is determined by higher powers that set the course for your life. It was this perception that helped you to deal with the inevitable, be it joy or suffering. You feel that these beliefs still live on today - they are part of your collective memory. The narrow path of destiny on which you are walking leads you back to the origins of humanity. You have heard these centuries-old stories, which are not just fantasies, but a reflection of collective fears and hopes. The idea that your life is fixed and your future is mapped out simultaneously gives you meaning and puts you in chains. You are a product of these traditions that relieve you of responsibility, but they also remind you of the power you carry in your heart. In the hectic world you l

Spirit of the Mind

Ingram 出版
2024/11/22 出版

In Spirit of the Mind, Sanaullah Khan delves into Islamic perspectives on the soul and its implications for spirituality and self-cultivation. Despite varying views on the soul's composition, a shared belief has persisted among theologians, scholars, preachers and reformists that it bears traces of the divine. Thus, drawing closer to God and gaining knowledge of nature involve returning to the soul's natural state of perfection. Central to Islamic thought is the struggle between the soul and the nafs (lower self), embodying carnal desires. In this context, achieving closeness to God requires purifying the soul to control the nafs. Khan traces a genealogy of the Islamic notion of the soul by exploring disturbances of the soul through Greek humoral theory, notions of spiritual weakness as deviation from perfection, the heart representing the seat of the soul, and the soul's aspiration for the divine light (nur) for its purification. Khan reflects on Islamic notions of the self through the tradition of the Perfect Man, which emphasizes spiritual ascent and divine proximity. Overall, the monograph offers a nuanced exploration of the soul's significance in Islamic thought, highlighting what thinkers have considered as the path to divine proximity and enlightenment.

Benign Bigotry

Ingram 出版
2024/11/21 出版

Benign Bigotry delves into the multifaceted landscape of prejudice, spanning academic and scientific research, popular culture, and contemporary politics. At its core lies the concept of subtle prejudice-a pervasive, often unconscious bias in race, gender, and sexuality. Through meticulous analysis and the author's own experience serving eight years on the Police Oversight Board, this book exposes seven seemingly harmless cultural myths that perpetuate inequality. It also confronts prejudices against women and LGBTQ+ individuals, offering concrete strategies to dismantle entrenched beliefs. Designed as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate classes, yet accessible to the educated lay reader, each chapter caters to those interested in psychology, sociology, business, and education. With a valuable new chapter on systemic inequality, updated real-life examples, and engaging with the exploration of empirical research on discrimination and prejudice emerging since 2009, this second edition is not to be missed.

Anatomy of an Avatar

Ingram 出版
2024/11/21 出版

This book applies a powerful framework in computational neuroscience (predictive coding and active inference) to explain psychiatric disorders that are characterised by pathologies of self-awareness. It shows how the self is best conceived of as an avatar or model made by the brain for the fundamental purpose of optimising basic bodily function. That avatar integrates and coordinates neurocomputation across the mind. It allows the mind to anticipate and respond to sensory information that bears on the organism's prospects. The self is thus a model (avatar) made by the brain to allow the body to play the game of life. When activity in circuitry that implements the avatar is compromised a variety of psychiatric disorders result. Anatomy of an Avatar provides a theoretical framework for theories of embodied selfhood anchored in homoestatic regulation, as well as exploring psychiatric disorders involving the self and the empirical application of concepts of free energy minimisation, active inference and predictive processing. The book also includes key case studies in the cognitive neuropsychiatry of self awareness and test cases for philosophical concepts of self representation and the experience of self awareness. The book will be essential reading for those in the fields of psychology and consciousness, psychiatry, and philosophy.

Domestic violence against the elderly

Ingram 出版

This work, which is part of a monograph that concluded the Specialisation course in Social Gerontology (Federal University of Pernambuco - UFPE) in conjunction with a section of the first author's Master's dissertation in Clinical Psychology (Catholic University of Pernambuco - UNICAP), supervised by the co-authors, deals with a subject of the utmost importance today: 'domestic violence against the elderly' as a consequence of family dysfunction. In this sense, we propose that it is necessary to understand the phenomenon in order to combat it, with the aim of promoting the eradication of this inhumane treatment of those who are most vulnerable in old age. We hope that this article can contribute, as a seed, to understanding this issue that plagues so many elderly people in Brazil and around the world.

Career guidance and precarious work

Ingram 出版
2024/11/20 出版

Historically, professional and career guidance in Brazil has developed to meet the demands of a very specific public: the middle and upper classes, more precisely at the time of choosing a higher education course among young people and career transitions among adults. However, the majority of the Brazilian population is made up of other groups, with limited access both to quality education and professional qualifications and to secure and decent employment relationships. With the recent social changes experienced in Brazil, there is a growing demand for career guidance from this population, while at the same time there is a lack of appropriate theoretical and practical models that make it possible to develop a consistent career project with these workers, taking into account both their economic and cultural reality and their unique desires and life history. This book presents a study on the process of career guidance in the clinical strategy carried out with adults without higher education and with precarious work histories, presenting the theoretical bases, the procedures used and the results achieved.

Relational Spirituality

Todd W,Hall  著
IVP Academic 出版
2024/11/20 出版

MIDWC Book AwardAs our society becomes more socially fragmented, many Christians feel disconnected and struggle to grow spiritually. Common models of spiritual transformation are proving inadequate to address "the sanctification gap." In recent decades, however, a new paradigm of human and spiritual development has been emerging from multiple fields. It's supported by a critical mass of evidence, all pointing to what psychologists Todd W. Hall and M. Elizabeth Lewis Hall call a relational revolution. In Relational Spirituality, Hall and Hall present a definitive model of spiritual transformation based on a relational paradigm. At its heart is the truth that human beings are fundamentally relational--we develop, heal, and grow through relationships. While many sanctification models are fragmented, individualistic, and lack a clear process for change, the relational paradigm paints a coherent picture of both process and goal, supported by both ancient wisdom and cutting-edge research. Integrating insights from psychology and theology, this book lays out the basis for relational spiritual transformation and how it works practically in the context of relationships and community.Relational Spirituality draws together themes such as trinitarian theology, historical and biblical perspectives on the imago Dei, relational knowledge, attachment patterns, and interpersonal neurobiology into a broad synthesis that will stimulate further dialogue across a variety of fields. Highlighting key characteristics of spiritual communities that foster transformation, Hall and Hall equip spiritual leaders and practitioners to more effectively facilitate spiritual growth for themselves and those they serve.Christian Association for Psychological Studies (CAPS) Books explore how Christianity relates to mental health and behavioral sciences including psychology, counseling, social work, and marriage and family therapy in order to equip Christian clinicians to support the well-being of their clients.

Educational Actions and Awareness at Work

Nanci,Gomes  著
Ingram 出版
2024/11/20 出版

The author discusses the possibility of creating educational processes in the organizational and work context, with the contribution of psychology, that intervene in reality and seek to promote ethics, combat violence and dehumanization in society. This book presents research from a master's dissertation, which reflects on educational actions carried out with workers in the public administration, guided by psychological practice, which had as its aim the emancipation and awareness of the person within the context of work. The research sought to answer whether, by succeeding in promoting a reflective process, this reflection can be extended to other areas of the person's life in society, acting in an ethical, more humanized and conscious way. The author draws on her experience with civil servants, with whom a training program for multiplier agents was carried out over three years.

Sexual Perversions and Paraphilias: An A to Z

Curtis Press 出版
2024/11/19 出版

Paraphilias, from the Greek "beyond usual or typical love", are uncommon types of sexual expression often more commonly described as sexual deviations, sexual perversions or disorders of sexual preference. They are accompanied by intense sexual arousal and may appear bizarre or, at the extreme end of the sexual continuum, socially unacceptable. For some, paraphilic behaviour may be sporadic, for others it may be compulsive or addictive. Dr Mark Griffiths, a Distinguished Professor of Behavioural Addiction at Nottingham Trent University, has been studying non-substance addiction for over 35 years including addictions to sexual behaviour. He began writing a blog in his spare time that chronicled hundreds of paraphilias and sexual perversions. His blog has received almost ten million visitors and this book features many of his most read articles on this topic. This is both an important and timely book. Some content is likely to be considered by many as truly shocking and horrendous, other material and case studies simply interesting, baffling or perhaps even amusing. To learn more, you simply must open the book and read ... and because it's an A to Z, you don't have to start at the beginning.

Therapy for Relationships with Eating Disorders

Kim,Lampson  著
W. W. Norton 出版
2024/11/19 出版

Effective eating disorder treatment modalities for adults continue to elude practitioners, and the rates of eating disorder relapse remain staggeringly high. Meanwhile, a vital resource for people with eating disorders remains unexplored: their romantic relationships.Tapping into this largely ignored vein of support, Gottman-RED (Relationships with Eating Disorders) is a new therapy for couples in which one or both partners have an eating disorder. Built upon a foundation of traditional Gottman Method Couples Therapy interventions, Gottman-RED adds fourteen new interventions designed specifically to help couples address difficult issues related to food, weight, body image, and exercise. These interventions encourage conversations characterized by empathetic engagement in which both partners are heard. This highly versatile therapy is the culmination of Dr. Kim Lampson's thirty years of working as a counseling psychologist with both couples and individuals with eating disorders. It offers a crucial, missing piece in the puzzling world of eating disorder treatment modalities.

Scaffolded Minds

Somogy,Varga  著
Mit Press 出版
2024/11/18 出版

A comprehensive account of cognitive scaffolding and its significance for understanding mental disorders. In Scaffolded Minds, Somogy Varga offers a novel account of cognitive scaffolding and its significance for understanding mental disorders. The book is part of the growing philosophical engagement with empirically informed philosophy of mind, which studies the interfaces between philosophy and cognitive science. Varga draws on two recent shifts within empirically informed philosophy of mind: the first, toward an intensified study of the embodied mind; and the second, toward a study of the disordered mind that acknowledges the convergence of the explanatory concerns of psychiatry and interdisciplinary inquiries into the mind. Varga sets out to accomplish a dual task: theoretical mapping of cognitive scaffolding; and the application/calibration of fine-grained philosophical distinctions to empirical research. He introduces the notion of actively scaffolded cognition (ASC) and offers a taxonomy that distinguishes between intrasomatic and extrasomatic scaffolding. He then shows that ASC offers a productive framework for considering certain characteristic features of mental disorders, focusing on altered bodily experience and social cognition deficits. With Cognitive Scaffolding, Varga aims to establish that shifting attention from mental symptoms to fine-grained sensorimotor aspects can lead to identifying diagnostic subtypes or even specific sensorimotor markers for early diagnosis.

You Are Here

Ingram 出版
2024/11/17 出版

I'm not angry. I'm just mad.Look around, and you'll see anger at work. It's in news reports, on social media, and in homes and offices. It shows up in our lives as frustration, irritation, and jealousy. Anger sounds like defensive or sarcastic remarks made in response to criticism. Sometimes, anger is hard to spot because it causes people to distance themselves and avoid the world-or maybe just one person in particular.Anger is everywhere, and the result is emotional disconnection. The problem is that humans have an innate need for emotional connection. Without it, anxiousness, loneliness, fear, hurt, and anger run rampant. In You Are Here, Bryan and Susan Duncan explain that anger is a reaction, not a feeling, and it stems from the inability to identify and share true emotion. While it's true that everyone feels, most people don't have the words to understand and accurately express their feelings. Without the right language, misunderstandings, conflict, and isolation grow.Drawing on decades of professional experience counseling thousands of clients of all ages and from all walks of life, the authors developed the Feeling Grid. In You Are Here, they share this powerful, easy-to-use tool to help you learn the language of emotion so you can understand what's going on behind the anger.Use the Feeling Grid and You Are Here to . . .find the words to identify your feelings and what to do with them, learn how to use your emotions in a healthy way, understand how to recognize and respond to what others are feeling, improve your relationships by healing and preventing the disconnection created by anger reactions, discover more moments of joy, and experience more peace and a greater sense of empowerment in your day-to-day life at work and at home.Decrease anger, increase emotional connection, and finally understand yourself.

Achievement Motivation On Emotional Intelligence Among School Teachers

Ingram 出版
2024/11/17 出版

The book highlights that the encouragement of teachers, a large number of students are no longer meek victims of corporal punishment. Teachers' emotional intelligence, self-efficacy, self esteem, power to successfully get things done and achievement motivation are interconnected. It also considers such factors in terms of which teacher is able to be happy. Studies show that teachers with higher self-efficacy are often more self-aware than other. On the other hand, teachers with low self-esteem typically manage their emotions much like the self-confident group do. There is a close relationship between achievement motivation and emotional intelligence, particularly in areas like self-awareness and empathy.

Burnout Syndrome

Burnout is characterized as a consequence of chronic stress related to occupational activity. This work refers to a study aimed at understanding Burnout Syndrome, through access to existing Brazilian literature on the subject and the experience of workers who have been affected by this syndrome. This study was carried out through qualitative research, using the empirical phenomenological method to conduct three (03) interviews with people who had left their jobs due to chronic exhaustion of the physical and psychological resources necessary for professional performance. We came to understand that the participants in the research were affected, in their own peculiar way, by a long process of physical and psychological exhaustion related to their professional activities, which characterizes Burnout Syndrome, resulting from the poor interaction between personal, social, occupational and organizational factors.

Temperament and Child Development in Context

2024/11/15 出版

Children's temperament is a central individual characteristic that has significant implications, directly and indirectly, for their social, emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and health outcomes, through its evocative and moderating effects on other social and contextual influences. Accounting for these contextual influences is critical to articulating the role of temperament in children's development. This Element defines temperament and describes its roots in neurobiological systems as well as its relevance to children's developmental outcomes, with a focus on understanding the influence of temperament in children's social and environmental contexts. It covers key developmental periods, situating the contribution of temperament to children's development in complex and changing processes and contexts from infancy through adolescence. The Element concludes by underscoring the value of integrating contextual, relational, and dynamic systems approaches and pointing to future directions in temperament research and application.

Ways To The Self

Murray,Stein  著
2024/11/15 出版

In this volume, Murray Stein and Diane Stanley explore, compare and contrast key features of the Buddhist view of Self liberation and the Jungian process of individuation. In Chapter One, they share experiences that opened a path to Self-knowledge in their own lives, including psychedelics, meditation, synchronicity, dreams and active imagination. The value of integrating transcendent experiences is explored in Chapter Two. In Chapter Three, they look at art work as soul-work, based on a series of twenty-four pictures from a Jungian analysis. What do such images, absent the specific dream content from which they arise, reveal about the direction of individuation? Chapter Four focuses on the tensions and difficulties of living in two worlds - the temporal and the timeless - as well as on the unconscious drive to bring them into synergy. Finally, the discussion concludes by circling back to the original question and asks: what are the limits and prospects of liberation of the Self?Table of ContentsPreface Conversation 1: Ways to the Self: Psychedelics, Active Imagination, Dreams and Jungian PsychoanalysisConversation 2: The Problem of Integration Conversation 3: Pictures from Analysis Conversation 4: Of Two Minds in One Conversation 5: Liberation: Limits and Prospects References Biographies
