Tell Me More
This book has three parts. The first part examines deception detection. It looks at lies, lying and liars but also delves into language construction, emotions, physiology, psychology, and more. It explains how microexpressions and statement analysis are reliable deception detectors. It describes how, on their own, the clues and signs of deception are not lie detectors but indicators of deceptive behaviour and speech. Like any forensic tool, it is not what they tell you but what that information can mean in the correct context. A fingerprint on a knife does not, on its own, provide evidence that the fingerprint belongs to the murderer, but only that a particular fingerprint is present on that knife. As we require more proof regarding the knife (what other forensics are present, whose fingerprint it is, etc.), we need more deception indicators beyond a simple choice of word, a flash of emotion, or a physical gesture. The second part discusses microexpressions and statement analysis, the twin tools in reliable deception detection. Both provide valuable clues of deception through the language and vocabulary used by a person, as well as those flashes of emotion and physical gestures that reveal much more than they are telling us directly. We will also look at the history and science behind both and how they have become standard practices for law enforcement worldwide. After all, why should such practical techniques be solely for law enforcement? The third part deals with the interview and examines why interviews are conducted. It looks at the similarities and differences in interview types. It explains how a common approach is the best way to ensure that interviews are successful, productive, and meet their objectives. It is a stand-alone topic and represents time well spent adopting and perfecting the approach detailed in the section. Finally, we will draw it all together and show how this will ensure your interviews are carried out efficiently. By adopting the practices, models and techniques described in this book, you will be so much better placed to ensure that, whatever reason you interview, you will ensure your interviews get results you can rely on that will enable you to make better decisions and draw more correct conclusions with confidence - whether that result is appointing the right person to a role, identifying which staff member is telling the truth, or working out before your partner that the daughter brought Sir John Somebody to an early demise in the new crime series on Netflix.Take what is helpful to you from this volume. It is written so that you may start at the beginning and read through until the end, but it is also intended for those with specific requirements. Feel free to jump to any part that interests you and dip in and out as you wish. But whatever you do, enjoy the content for what it is - an insight into interviewing and deception detection. I do not doubt that once you embrace the concepts and practices within these pages, you will find yourself more at ease in interviews and achieving much better outcomes, whether you are the interviewer or the interviewee.

C.G. Jung - The Basel Years: A Walking Guide
C.G. Jung--The Basel Years: A Walking Guide represents the culmination of a decade of research, exploration, and immersion in the city where Jung spent the formative years of his life. Authored by Swiss analytic psychologist Kathrin Schaeppi, who has called Basel home since the age of 15, this book offers a rare opportunity to trace Jung's footsteps and discover how the city and its surroundings shaped his worldview and informed his groundbreaking theories of the personal and collective unconscious and the individuation process. Drawing on Schaeppi's deep research into the history of Basel and Jung's personal and familial background, as well as her years of experience offering guided tours through the city, the book leads readers on five thoughtfully curated walking tours. Each tour represents a distinct chronological period, revealing themes relevant to Jung's life and intellectual development at the time and uncovering never-before-seen details of his youth. More than just a walking guide, the book provides rich historical context and vivid storytelling, enriched by approximately 150 evocative images that bring Jung's early years to life--even for readers journeying from afar.

Breakdown
In retrospect, after having long researched these assassination cases, it became apparent that an undefined, fictional undercurrent-- a mystery of sorts, a mysterious veil-- is connected to these two murder cases that also has not been addressed. This mystery continues to be enveloped in the criminal reasoning of how and why these assassins arrived at a point in their lives where they were driven to kill. Certain aspects of these two assassinations spawned a mystifying search for the real identities of Oswald and Sirhan which, in a comparative way, seemed to mirror the structure of popular " whodunit" novels, where the final chapter is usually devoted to unmasking and identifying the perpetrator. Breakdown is instead a nonfictional portrayal " why-theydunit" true crime investigation. The pervasive theme is more why Oswald and Sirhan, as their last acts as free men, succumbed to criminal thoughts that urged them to commit murder.
Choosing Help
Why do so many people resist getting help--even when their lives depend on it?In Choosing Help, psychologist Tracy Stecker, PhD, offers a compassionate and evidence-based guide to understanding the deep-rooted reasons why individuals avoid treatment for mental health and substance use issues--and how to help them move toward change. Drawing on decades of clinical research and real-world experience, Dr. Stecker explores the psychological barriers that keep people from seeking support, from fear and shame to mistrust and denial. Rather than placing the burden solely on families or communities, Choosing Help introduces a groundbreaking intervention model designed to shift the individual's own mindset--making the decision to seek help not just possible, but empowering. Each chapter of Choosing Help dives into a specific mindset that keeps people from seeking support. You'll meet individuals who believe treatment won't work, who insist they're not ready, or who feel they don't need help at all. Others are convinced they can handle it on their own, fear being forced into the wrong kind of treatment, or struggle with the vulnerability of opening up. Through these stories and insights, Dr. Stecker reveals how these beliefs form--and how they can be gently challenged and transformed. With clear analysis, relatable case studies, and actionable strategies, Choosing Help equips readers with the tools to recognize resistance, respond with empathy, and guide themselves or others toward healing. Whether you're a clinician, caregiver, loved one, or someone wrestling with your own reluctance, this book is a vital resource for making help feel like a choice--not a confrontation.
Living Between Worlds
Join a Veteran Depth Psychologist and Philosopher on the Search for Paths to Deeper Meaning, Purpose, and Fulfillment How did we get to this crossroads in history? And how will we make it through--individually and as a species? "We all assumed that learning, rationality, and good intentions would be enough to bring us to the promised land," says Dr. James Hollis. "But they haven't and won't. Yet what we also do not recognize is that the human animal is equipped for survival. In time, we grow large enough to contain what threatened to destroy us." In Living Between Worlds, the renowned Jungian broadens his lens to encompass the relationship between our inner struggles and the rapidly shifting realities of modern human existence. Here, you will invoke the tools of depth psychology, classical literature, philosophy, dreamwork, and myth to gain access to the resources that supported our ancestors through their darkest hours. Though our current challenges may be unique, finding a way forward has always come through our measureless capacity for creativity, wisdom, and connection to a reality larger than ourselves. In Living Between Worlds, you won't find easy answers or pat reassurances--but you will discover always-available sources of hope and support.

One Hand Clapping
Neuroscientist Nikolay Kukushkin reveals how consciousness evolved out of the natural world, from the birth of the cell to the majesty of our modern minds. Science says that you are nothing but a chemical reaction--a collection of atoms and molecules, like rocks, paperclips, and everything else in the physical universe. But if that's so, where is the place in this world for your consciousness? In a word, why does it feel so special to be you? Like the Zen Buddhist riddle pondering the imponderable--the sound of a single hand clapping--One Hand Clapping asks the seemingly unanswerable question of how the human mind came to exist within the material world. In search of an answer, neuroscientist Nikolay Kukushkin takes readers on a billion-year journey through time from the roots of our existence to the advent of Homo sapiens, reimagining the story of our evolution. The result is an exhilarating book that embeds our consciousness within a single, unified story of life on Earth. Illuminated by Kukushkin's revolutionary account of what makes us what we are, the so-called "hard problem" of consciousness--the mystery by which our first-person feelings arise from the brain--evaporates like a dream. Instead, the book reveals the deep continuity between our consciousness and nature itself. A work of ambitious intellectual scope, One Hand Clapping is distinguished as much by its originality as by the breadth of its imaginative reach--drawing from neuroscience, evolution, philosophy, and a rich tapestry of cultural references, all brought to life by the author's own whimsical illustrations. Told with the drama and daring of a mythical epic, it reaches deep into our oceanic past to show for the first time how the entire course of Earth's history, from the earliest nonliving particles, ultimately led to the formation of our own minds. In a time of technological confusion, Kukushkin's book is an ode to the human being--an unfolding of Nature itself, blessed with the gift to contemplate the world and to hear the sound of one hand clapping.
The Essence of Bipolar Disorder
A Groundbreaking Scientific Investigation into the Genetic and Neurological Origins of Bipolar Disorder After a multiyear study of recent advances in neuroscience and genetics, Dr. William J. Walsh has resolved many of the core unknowns about bipolar disorder that have puzzled researchers for more than a century. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Walsh presents a new evidence-based theory of bipolar disorder--offering clarity on a condition that has eluded definitive understanding for decades. Affecting more than seventy million people worldwide, bipolar disorder remains a leading cause of suicide, unemployment, and lost human potential. The Essence of Bipolar Disorder takes readers inside a fascinating medical investigation. Early findings indicated that bipolar is a late onset epigenetic illness involving progressive DNA damage with advancing age. A novel analysis of sixty-three known bipolar risk genes revealed the likely cause of this unique mental illness: Mutated ion channels that impair regulation of neurotransmitters, coincident with accelerated DNA damage. These genetic predispositions generally are not sufficient to trigger bipolar disorder during childhood and adolescence, but continuing DNA damage over many years eventually triggers bipolar onset. These findings led to the discovery of a potassium-ion flooding mechanism that can explain the unique oscillation between mania and depression. Further analysis of neurotransmitter systems identified impaired serotonin neurons as the key drivers of mood-state switching. This innovative theory could transform the future of bipolar disorder research and suggests promising new treatment opportunities. It also opens the door to future DNA and epigenetic screening tools that may identify children at high risk--potentially enabling early, antioxidant-based interventions to prevent illness onset. Dr. Walsh's findings redefine the medical framework for bipolar disorder--offering new hope to those affected by this complex and often devastating condition. This book is essential reading for researchers, clinicians, and mental health professionals dedicated to advancing psychiatric care.

How do we even talk about Palestine and Israel
The world changed on 7th October 2023 when Hamas made incursions into Israeli territory, resulting in 1200 deaths and 251 hostages. The response by Israel's government and military has since brought terrible destruction to Gaza, killing over 60,000 people, with 2.3 million forced from their homes. How have we allowed it to happen? What can we say?One group of twelve child psychiatrists, psychologists and psychotherapists - with children's welfare much in mind - met fortnightly to discuss the insurmountable difficulties of the Palestine-Israel conflict and their feelings about the horror streaming daily on their media. Can such matters be discussed in a group? Can minds be changed? Deep disagreement and pain - yet nothing near the pain experienced in Gaza. Silence can't be the response. Some of the collection's contributors come from Palestinian or Jewish heritage, others from different but divided, conflicted backgrounds. Their history goes back to the Balfour Declaration and to the Holocaust. A mother who lived through Kristallnacht; a father from Jaffa with shrapnel head injuries during the Nakba. The group shares memories, reflections, essays and poems in a courageous effort to urge us all towards sense, empathy and a more complex understanding of the catastrophe before our very eyes.
Intersubjectivity in Psychotherapy
The set of relational methods outlined by Integrative Psychotherapy provides a comprehensive guide for intersubjective treatment. Research in child development has stressed the importance of intersubjectivity for the establishment of healthy reciprocal relationships. Several models of psychotherapy have adopted an intersubjective approach to address relational problems. The relational methods of Integrative Psychotherapy put into practice many insights emanating from research regarding the origins of intersubjectivity in child development. The related subset of methods in Integrative Psychotherapy, such as acknowledgment, validation, normalization and presence, become important components in creating an intersubjective format in treatment. Such interventions contribute to building an intersubjective format in individual and group psychotherapy and may prove useful in helping people with early relational failures and the subsequent disruptions to the development of healthy intersubjective aspects of relationships.
Reframing and Innovating Media Psychology
The field of media psychology has evolved significantly, paralleling advancements in media technology from print and broadcast to today's digital ecosystems. This evolution necessitates updated theoretical frameworks and practical approaches to understand the psychological impacts of media. Reframing and Innovating Media Psychology: Bridging Theories, Applications, and New Horizons addresses this need, bridging foundational theories with innovative perspectives to tackle emerging challenges in the media landscape. The book begins by revisiting traditional theories in media psychology, highlighting their relevance while identifying their limitations in addressing the complexities of modern digital platforms. It proposes a reframed, comprehensive model for understanding media's influence on cognition, emotion, and behavior. Beyond theory, the book explores practical applications, including real-world case studies, education, public health, and ethical considerations. It emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration to enrich understanding and expand the boundaries of media psychology. As media becomes increasingly immersive and pervasive, ethical challenges such as algorithmic bias, misinformation, and the psychological impacts of AI and virtual reality are addressed. The book equips readers with tools to responsibly navigate and influence the media landscape. This work draws on contributions from scholars and practitioners to serve as a resource and inspiration for students, researchers, educators, and practitioners. It calls on readers to critically engage with the ideas presented, aiming to reframe and innovate media psychology to meet the demands of an ever-changing world while enhancing the human experience.
The Challenge of Nihilism and Human Degeneracy
The reluctance to effectively address environmental destruction, overpopulation, and genetic deterioration is frequently attributed to weak political leadership, administrative failures, and economic constraints. This book uncovers an additional, crucial cause underlying this human failure: It is the nihilistic drive that insidiously targets the human species with the aim of undermining life itself. The author identifies the dynamics of Species-Targeting Destructiveness, rooted in the death instinct, examining how it manifests in human behavior and is perpetuated by specific individuals and social groups. To counteract these forces, the author proposes a bio-political solution.ALEXANDER ABDENNUR has worked as a criminal justice researcher with federal research departments and has taught at universities in Canada and abroad. He holds an MA in Criminology and a PhD in Education from the University of Ottawa and is the author of five academic books.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - From the author of The Power of Habit, a fascinating exploration of what makes conversations work--and how we can all learn to be supercommunicators at work and in life"A winning combination of stories, studies, and guidance that might well transform the worst communicators you know into some of the best."--Adam Grant, author of Think Again and Hidden Potential ONE OF NPR'S BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR - FINALIST FOR THE SABEW BEST IN BUSINESS BOOK AWARD Come inside a jury room as one juror leads a starkly divided room to consensus. Join a young CIA officer as he recruits a reluctant foreign agent. And sit with an accomplished surgeon as he tries, and fails, to convince yet another cancer patient to opt for the less risky course of treatment. In Supercommunicators, Charles Duhigg blends deep research and his trademark storytelling skills to show how we can all learn to identify and leverage the hidden layers that lurk beneath every conversation. Communication is a superpower and the best communicators understand that whenever we speak, we're actually participating in one of three conversations: practical (What's this really about?), emotional (How do we feel?), and social (Who are we?). If you don't know what kind of conversation you're having, you're unlikely to connect. Supercommunicators know the importance of recognizing--and then matching--each kind of conversation, and how to hear the complex emotions, subtle negotiations, and deeply held beliefs that color so much of what we say and how we listen. Our experiences, our values, our emotional lives--and how we see ourselves, and others--shape every discussion, from who will pick up the kids to how we want to be treated at work. In this book, you will learn why some people are able to make themselves heard, and to hear others, so clearly. With his storytelling that takes us from the writers' room of The Big Bang Theory to the couches of leading marriage counselors, Duhigg shows readers how to recognize these three conversations--and teaches us the tips and skills we need to navigate them more successfully. In the end, he delivers a simple but powerful lesson: With the right tools, we can connect with anyone.
Fear Knot
Why do we fear Halloween candy but not vending machines? Why do "witch hunts" recur so often in history? How dangerous are serial killers, really? The Fear Knot examines our most common deeply held fears, unpacking which are valid and which are misguided, explaining the history of how our irrational fears developed, and how we can unlearn them. We live in a world seemingly rife with danger, a villainous stranger or new deadly bacteria lurking around every corner. So how do we sort through these fears, determining which are well-founded and which have been manufactured? How can our biases and psychology allow these fears to overtake us, and how can we learn to think logically in a world driven by sensationalism? In this lively and timely tour, psychologist Natashia Swalve and journalism professor Ruth DeFoster lead readers through the history and psychology behind our most visible and sensational cultural fears, beginning with the most personal--fear within our bodies--and moving outward to the home, our country, and finally to our broadest society-level fears. From micro fears, like how our fear of vaccines has led to measles epidemics, to the broad existential dread associated with climate change and gun violence, The Fear Knot examines the toll our fears take on us, on an individual and societal level. Exploring how shared culture, media consumption, and even our own brain can help drive incorrect beliefs about risk, Swalve and DeFoster help readers to make informed, evidence-based decisions about fear and risk-- and along the way, to learn how to think critically, examine your own beliefs, and become confident consumers of media and popular culture. Combining psychology and journalism in short, light-hearted chapters, The Fear Knot gives readers a fresh look at Americans' perceptions of risk and danger, with an emphasis on how to recognize misinformation or biases, updated to include the most recent fears that Americans face in the 21st century-- and the real dangers that we may be ignoring.
Inside the Head of an Asperger
"I have the impression of living differently from others. From the image of being different that he reflects back to me. I imagine this other person living in a kind of dream, evolving in a foreign language. If he lives in a dream, I'm inhabited by a drama. The same letters, just slightly altered, and because of this anagram, you're thrown into a totally different environment. Incomprehensible, funny, nightmarish..."In 2016, at the age of 57, Ren矇 Maurice Dereumaux was diagnosed with Asperger's autism. Blessed with a simultaneously revealed giftedness, the author had to carry this handicap all his life without knowing it.In this rare and precious document, he confides in us how this syndrome has inhabited him body and soul since his earliest childhood. Revenge of the Tipping Point
Twenty-five years after the publication of his groundbreaking first book, Malcolm Gladwell returns in this New York Times bestseller that reframes the lessons of The Tipping Point in a startling and revealing light. Why is Miami ... Miami? What does the heartbreaking fate of the cheetah tell us about the way we raise our children? Why do Ivy League schools care so much about sports? What is the Magic Third, and what does it mean for racial harmony? In this provocative new work, Malcolm Gladwell returns for the first time in twenty-five years to the subject of social epidemics and tipping points, this time with the aim of explaining the dark side of contagious phenomena. Through a series of riveting stories, Gladwell traces the rise of a new and troubling form of social engineering. He takes us to the streets of Los Angeles to meet the world's most successful bank robbers, rediscovers a forgotten television show from the 1970s that changed the world, visits the site of a historic experiment on a tiny cul-de-sac in northern California, and offers an alternate history of two of the biggest epidemics of our day: COVID and the opioid crisis. Revenge of the Tipping Point is Gladwell's most personal book yet. With his characteristic mix of storytelling and social science, he offers a guide to making sense of the contagions of modern world. It's time we took tipping points seriously. Most Anticipated in: AARP Associated Press Time Magazine Oprah Daily Chicago Tribune Literary Hub Publishers Weekly Publishers Lunch

Social Psychology in Christian Perspective
Human social interaction is varied, complex and always changing. How we perceive each other and ourselves, how individuals interact within groups, and how groups are structured--all these are the domain of social psychology. Many have doubted, however, that a full-fledged social psychology textbook can successfully be written from a Christian perspective. Inevitably, some say, when attempting to integrate theology and social psychology, one discipline must suffer at the expense of the other. Angela Sabates counters that thinking by demonstrating how these two disciplines can indeed be brought together in a fruitful way. She crisply covers key topics in social psychology, utilizing research that is well grounded in the empirical and theoretical literature, while demonstrating how a distinctively Christian approach can offer fresh ideas and understandings. Why doesn't our behavior always match what we say we believe? How and when are we most likely to be persuaded? What is the social psychology of violence? How reliable are eyewitness testimonies? Are racism and prejudice on the decline or are we just better at hiding them?Sabates draws out the implications of a Christian view of human persons on these and other central subjects within the well-established framework of social psychological study. This volume is for those looking for a core text that makes use of a Christian theological perspective to explore what the science of psychology suggests to us about the nature of human social interaction.About the Series Christian Association for Psychological Studies (CAPS) Books explore how Christianity relates to mental health and behavioral sciences including psychology, counseling, social work, and marriage and family therapy in order to equip Christian clinicians to support the well-being of their clients.
