Hidden Grace
Hidden Grace: Growing through Loss and Grief offers a hopeful model of bereavement for persons experiencing painful losses. Rather than viewing this universal human experience as an illness to be cured or sorrow to be tolerated, Blevins portrays grief as a holistic process that offers the possibility of personal transformation when life is shattered by a significant loss.Blevins draws upon his experience as a mental-health professional and university professor and the traumatic loss of his daughter. He affirms that while grief is agonizing, it is a normal and instinctive human response that can nurture personal growth and wholeness grounded in meditative spirituality. In this way, grief can become both gift and grace in responding to a significant loss, depending upon how one chooses to respond.
Journey of Pain and Peace
Walking helps! Walking is therapy for me. When I walk I think; I sort; I get in touch with my anger; I relive my pain as a way of coming to terms with it; I process. When I walk I think;I sort; I get in touch with my anger; I relive my pain as a way of coming to terms with it; I process. I do some of my best thinking when I walk. Often something that I am dealing with is much clearer when I return from a walk.Much of this book was born as I walkedin our neighborhood. I relived the pain. I relived the compassion. I struggledwith loss. I tried to sort out how I live with this loss. I prayed.Thoughts about pain, loss, and peace became clearer as I walked.Heading to the computer as I entered the house to jot down those thoughtswas a typical experience. Perhapsit is appropriate that a book about a personal journey was significantly birthed as I walked.Walking is therapy for me.So is reading. A few months after our daughter Kym's death, I began to search for books to guide me on this new journey. Many good books by others who had walked similar journeys or by professional grief counselors stimulated and comforted me.I learned so much from them. Writingabout what I learned became another avenue of healing.Walking, reading and writing pave the path of this journey.Carolyn DeArmond Blevins is AssociateProfessor, Emerita of the School of Religion at Carson-Newman College. She lives with her husband, Bill, in Jefferson City, Tennessee, where she enjoys walking, reading and writing.

"Revolution in Poetic Language" Fifty Years Later
Revisits Julia Kristeva's magnum opus on the fiftieth anniversary of its original publication to open up new paths of interdisciplinary inquiry. In her 1974 Revolution in Poetic Language, Julia Kristeva resisted the abstract use of language, with its aim of totalization and finality, in all its colonizing and alienating forms. A major thinker and critic, Kristeva reappropriated Hegel's concepts of desire and negativity, in conjunction with the thought of Heidegger, Arendt, Freud, and Lacan, to revolt against modernity's culture of nihilism and the West's inability to deal with loss. This collection celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of Revolution in Poetic Language by revisiting Kristeva's oeuvre and establishing exciting new directions in Kristeva studies. Engaging with queer and transgender studies, disability studies, decolonial studies, and more, renowned and rising scholars plot continuities in-and push the boundaries of-Kristeva's thinking about loss, revolution, and revolt. The volume also includes two essays by Kristeva, translated into English for the first time here-"The Impossibility of Loss" (1988) and "Of What Use Are Poets in Times of Distress?" (2016).

Breaking Chains
In 2021, I began to navigate the waters of anxiety. The anxiety that I faced was more than just an anxious feeling. It was crippling. It was debilitating. It became such a stronghold that I couldn't even go into my kitchen without having a panic attack. The walk to the car felt impossible and the drive to the store was terrible. I have never had a dream of becoming a writer. I did write a few things for my kids when they were younger. I could never find stories or devotionals that were exactly what I was looking for, so I would write them myself. As I said, writing was never my dream. I did love writing songs, but books were never something that I wanted to make a career out of. Fast forward to 2021. This was the start of a really long journey. One with so many trials. So many obstacles. But through these obstacles, I felt God's presence. The nights when I would lay awake crying. The days when I just felt like I wanted to give up. To give up on ever leaving the house. I felt God so close to me. Finding strength in God when I had none. Because when I was weak, He was strong. After about 7 months of living with anxiety, fear, and panic, I felt it on my heart to start writing down my journey. Ever since the beginning of writing, I knew that God would use this testimony to show others what happens when you press on. When you persevere, even when you want to give up. This journey has been far from easy. It's been hard and difficult. In these pages you will find pain, but you will also find hope, healing, and a God who never fails. There were days when I woke from dead sleep to write, because God put something on my heart to share. What started as me writing my journey turned into a book of love, healing, and messages that I hope you will find more of God in.

Jung and the Epic of Transformation - Volume 1
What have the Middle Ages got to do with us? For Jung, it seems, quite a lot; after all, he tells us: "I must catch up with a piece of the Middle Ages - within myself," adding: "We have only finished the Middle Ages - of others." In Wolfram von Eschenbach's "Parzival" and the Grail as Transformation, Paul Bishop considers the significance for Jung of a masterpiece of medieval German literature, and a major work in the tradition of the legendary Holy Grail. Wolfram's Parzival epic depicts a three-fold quest: for the hero's identity, for vr繹ude ("joy"), and for the mysterious Grail. In the course of this quest, Parzival himself is transformed from a fool into the lord of the Grail, and the power of the Grail brings about a collective transformation as well. This is the first volume in a series of books, examining key texts in German literature and thought that were, in Jung's own estimation or by scholarly consent, highly influential on his thinking. The project of Jung and the Epic of Transformation consists of four titles, sequentially arranged to explore great works from a Jungian perspective and in turn to highlight their importance for interpreting The Red Book.Table of Contents-List of Abbreviations -Grail Studies (in chronological order) -Parzival/Parsifal Studies (in chronological order) -Editions cited -Acknowledgements -Preface: The Grail and Arthurian Legend -Chapter 1 An Introduction to Epic -Chapter 2 Wolfram's Parzival -Chapter 3 Jung and the Grail Myth: Analytical Psychology as a New Form of Quest for Transformation -Bibliography

Girls and Their Monsters
For readers of Hidden Valley Road and Patient H.M., an "intimate and compassionate portrait" (Grace M. Cho) of the Genain quadruplets, the harrowing violence they experienced, and its psychological and political consequences. In 1954, researchers at the newly formed National Institute of Mental Health set out to study the genetics of schizophrenia. When they got word that four 24-year-old identical quadruplets had been diagnosed with the mental illness, they could hardly believe it. Here was incontrovertible proof of hereditary transmission. But the case of the pseudonymous Genain quadruplets was hardly so straightforward. Contrary to fawning media portrayals of a picture-perfect Christian family, the sisters had endured the stuff of nightmares behind closed doors and been the object of paranoid public fantasies. Even as the sisters' erratic behaviors became impossible to ignore and the NIMH whisked the women off for study, their sterling image did not falter. Girls and Their Monsters chronicles the extraordinary, shocking lives of the quadruplets while exploring the delusions that gripped the American psyche in the middle of the twentieth century.

Sensitive
"This important book reframes the way we think about sensitivity--our own or someone else's--and shines a light on the great power in being highly attuned to the world."--Susan Cain, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Bittersweet and Quiet A paradigm-shifting look at a long-undervalued yet hugely beneficial personality trait, from the creators of the world's largest community for highly sensitive people "Don't be so sensitive!"Everyone has a sensitive side, but nearly one in three people have the genes to be more sensitive than others--both physically and emotionally. These are the people who pause before speaking and think before acting; they tune in to subtle details and make connections that others miss. Whether introverted or extroverted, they tend to be bighearted, creative, and wired to go deep, yet society tells them to hide the very sensitivity that makes them this way. These are the world's "highly sensitive people," and Sensitive is the book that champions them. From the creators of the world's largest community for sensitive people, Sensitive teaches us how to unlock the potential in this undervalued strength and leverage it across the most important areas of our lives: friendships and intimate relationships, the workplace, leadership, and parenting. Through fascinating research and expert storytelling, Jenn Granneman and Andre S籀lo--sensitive people themselves--show us that the way to thrive as a sensitive person is not to hide our sensitivity but to embrace it, and how to do that in every area of life. Weaving together actionable advice, relatable anecdotes, and the latest scientific research, Granneman and S籀lo demonstrate how leaning into sensitivity unlocks a powerful boost effect to propel us ahead in life. They hand us the tools and insights we need to thrive as sensitive people in a loud, fast, too-much world. A powerfully validating, destigmatizing, and practical book, Sensitive plants a gently fluttering flag in the ground for sensitive people everywhere. This inspiring book has the power to change, once and for all, how we see sensitive people--and how they see themselves.
The Fool's Poems
Honouring our brokenness and happiness is like seeing a broken pot repaired with gold dust in the glue so all the breaks are visible. The gold cracks show that when repaired with all its scars visible, the imperfect piece of pottery may be more beautiful than the perfect original. It can be a restorative process representing a changed perspective, of healing and wholeness, accepting the imperfectly beautiful.
On Dreams
Contributors: Charles P. Fisher, MD - William Fried, PhD - Eugene Mahon, MD Edward Nersessian, MD - Arlene Kramer Richards, EdDArnold Richards, MD - Arnold Rothstein, MD - Brent Willock, PhDThe dream is that nightly 'state of the psyche address' that presents us with our social emotional life in the language of metaphor. Arlene Kramer Richards, as editor of this volume, On Dreams, has brought our attention to the dream world once again. The chapters, written by distinguished analysts, take us back to Freud and beyond to consider the wish for immortality in dreams, the role of neuroscience in dreams, transference phenomena in dreams, and so much more. Eugene Mahon's interesting article on the "dream-within-a-dream" becomes a subject of careful commentary for several of the other authors. Arlene reminds us of one of Freud's most important influences, Artemidorus of Daldis, who wrote 1800 years ago and provided much of the basic structure upon which Freud built his view of the dream. Significantly Artemidoris saw the dream as a pertaining to the future while Freud said it was based in the past and addressing the present. Charles P. Fisher describes the treatment of dreams among the indigenous Achuar people in the Ecuadorian Amazon jungles. For the Achuar, as for Artemidorus, the dream is oriented to the future. Additionally, they see the dream "as more real than reality." And finally the dream is not simply for the dreamer or addressing the analyst but is explicitly addressing the community and is in fact interpreted within a community setting. Brent Willock asserts that Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams is "the most important book ever penned in psychology" but "it is not the last word on this subject." Arlene Kramer Richards's volume On Dreams confirms this assertion and gives us so much more to think about and, dare I say, even dream about.-Daniel S. Benveniste, PhD, author of Libido, Culture, and Consciousness: Revisiting Freud's Totem and Taboo (IPBooks 2022)Dreams have fascinated dreamers for the 200,000 years of human existence on earth. Sigmund Freud made dream analysis a core element in his brilliant development of the concepts and techniques of a new discipline, psychoanalysis. In this noteworthy collection of essays by eight eminent psychoanalysts on dreams, we discover new perspectives, new insights, touching on the time-honored tradition of dream interpretation, understanding our earliest life, acknowledging a wish for immortality, retaining a sense of mystery in the intellectual milieu of psychoanalysis.-Merle Molofsky, MFA, NCPsyA
The Laws of Connection
This groundbreaking study reveals how social connections are far more important than we thought, showing us the steps we can take to build better relationships and improve our lives. Social connection is as essential for our health and happiness as a balanced diet and regular exercise. It reduces our risk of stroke, heart disease, and Alzheimer's. It enhances our creativity and adds years to our life span. Yet many of us struggle to form strong and meaningful bonds--and the problem lies not with our personalities but with a series of cognitive biases that stop us from fulfilling our social potential. In The Laws of Connection, award-winning science writer David Robson describes the psychological barriers that lead us to keep others at a distance and offers evidence-based strategies to overcome them. Drawing on philosophy, neuroscience, and cutting-edge psychology, Robson introduces readers to new concepts such as the liking gap, the novelty penalty, the fast-friendship procedure, the beautiful mess effect, and the Japanese art of amae. Whether we are shy or confident, introvert or extrovert, we can all build deeper relationships. The Laws of Connection shows us how.
The Drop
In this revelatory and original book, award-winning author of the acclaimed surf memoir On a Wave illuminates the connection between waves, addiction, and recovery, exploring what surfing can teach us about the powerful undertow of addictive behaviors and the ways to swim free of them.Addiction is arguably the dominant feature of contemporary life: sex, gambling, exercise, eating, shopping, Internet use--there's virtually no pleasurable activity that can't morph into a destructive obsession. For Americans under the age of fifty-five, the leading cause of death is drug overdose. But there is another side of addiction. In some instances, the very activities that can lead to addiction can also lead out of it. As neurologists have recently discovered, surfing is a kind of study in the mechanism of addiction, delivering dopamine to the "pleasure" center of the brain and reshaping priorities and desire in a feedback loop of narrowing focus. Thad Ziolkowski knows this dynamic intimately. A lifelong surfer, he has been surrounded by addiction since his boyhood. In this unique, groundbreaking book, part addiction memoir, part sociological study, part spiritual odyssey, Ziolkowski dismantles the myth of surfing as a radiantly wholesome lifestyle immune to the darker temptations of the culture and discovers among the rubble a new way to understand and ultimately overcome addiction. Combining his own story with insights from scientists, progressive thinkers and the experiences of top surfers and addicts from around the world, Ziolkowski shows how getting on a board and catching a wave is a unique and deeply instructive means of riding out of the darkness and back into the light. Yet while surfing is his salvation, its lessons can applied to other activities that can pull us free from the lethal undertow of addiction and save lives.
Tough To Talk
MANUP by Tough to Talk is a no-nonsense look into the silent war that countless men across the globe are fighting with their mental health. These are their stories in their own words.Society sits back while men are grappling silently with their biological, emotional, psychological, past trauma, current life events and gendered issues. And these men do not get the help they need because to them they do not have a mental health problem, they have financial problems, an addiction, relationship problems, health problems, and past traumas. And it's just not worth it.Is it any wonder then that these factors combined turn out to be the main causes of suicide behaviours?Every 40 seconds another life is lost to suicide: 75% of these are men. This isn't just a statistic; it's a call to action, a demand for change. Men are being either ignored or emasculated by both society and the narrative around toxic masculinity.Traditionally men have been told to man up, not to cry or show emotions, and to be the tough guy. Stoicism has masked severe mental health issues, and the consensus has been one of defining masculinity as something that is toxic in its very being. These men are our fathers, brothers, husbands, sons, friends, colleagues, and peers. With the rise of toxic feminism, more women in the workplace, and a greater awareness of gender inequality, men are constantly having to re-define and re-discover who they are allowed to be, have to be and should be, whilst also coping with the raging fire within them called testosterone. They try to keep their emotions locked-up, but when the trigger is pulled, they explode leaving carnage everywhere.Men's mental health is fast becoming the most prevalent social issue of our time, and in this raw and real, engaging and provocative new book, men of various ages, nation cultures, ethnicities and socio-economic groups share their own struggles with masculinity. Each chapter covers a range of challenging, sometimes uncomfortable topics including strength and vulnerability of mind and body, romantic and workplace relationships, body image, abuse and narcissism, racial and gender equality, and fatherhood.
