Between Reason and Illusion
This book realistically describes the experiences of people living with schizophrenia and their families, from the detection of the first symptoms until the development of treatments and strategies to cope with this unique human condition. Schizophrenia is a form of psychosis in which subjective aspects, such as hallucinatory and delusional phenomena, tend to distort the understanding of reality. Because psychotic states fluctuate in intensity over time, those affected literally live between reason and illusion. Between Reason and Illusion: Demystifying Schizophrenia is an invitation to understand what it means to develop schizophrenia and to live with it throughout one's life. And this is an invitation to all those who are in some way affected by this condition: those who live with it, family members, friends, health professionals, and everyone who want to have a non-stigmatized view of mental disorders and people who live with them. "Faced with psychosis, the person affected by the disease and the family are lost and go looking for alternative or spiritual help, which usually delays the beginning of treatment. Jorge, Cec穩lia and Rodrigo had the courage to face a difficult theme and the happy idea of writing a book of an educational nature about schizophrenia. The book's originality lies in the fact that it was written taking into account the experience of the person with the disease and his or her family members in the face of this something new that has occurred in their lives". - Dr. Itiro Shirakawa, Professor Emeritus of the Paulista Medical School of the Federal University of S瓊o Paulo (UNIFESP/EPM), Brazil.
Working the Difference
A history of motivational interviewing and what its rise reveals about how cultural forms emerge and spread. Motivational interviewing (MI) is a professional practice, a behavioral therapy, and a self-professed conversation style that encourages clients to talk themselves into change. Originally developed to treat alcoholics, MI quickly spread into a variety of professional fields including corrections, medicine, and sanitation. In Working the Difference, E. Summerson Carr focuses on the training and dissemination of MI to explore how cultural forms--and particularly forms of expertise--emerge and spread. The result is a compelling analysis of the American preoccupations at MI's core, from democratic autonomy and freedom of speech to Protestant ethics and American pragmatism.

Introducing Mindfulness-Based Wellbeing Enhancement
Mindfulness-Based Wellbeing Enhancement (MBWE) integrates Mindfulness and Wellbeing to realize human flourishing and the attainment of happiness. This 9-session program, conducted over 8 weeks, enhances wellbeing, happiness and quality of life through self-understanding and self-awareness. The first part of the book is devoted to presenting mindfulness, wellbeing, the happiness paradigm and the curriculum of the Mindfulness-Based Wellbeing Enhancement (MBWE) program. It presents the foundations of mindfulness-based programs, and how mindfulness intersects with wellbeing. The authors argue, with the support of evidence, that mindfulness is well placed to promote human flourishing rather than limiting its relevance to stress reduction and preventing depression relapse. Several chapters are devoted to presenting the MBWE program comprehensively with weekly agendas, homework, handouts, facilitation guides and practice scripts. The second part of the book presents the evidence base of mindfulness, cultural adaptations for different populations, the therapeutic effectiveness of group learning inherent in Mindfulness-Based Programs and the often-untold history of mindfulness. The authors present the often-neglected Asian roots of Mindfulness and justify how secular Mindfulness, as taught by Jon Kabat-Zinn, is influenced by multiple wisdom traditions as opposed to it being a solely Buddhist practice. This book serves as a hands-on resource for trained mindfulness teachers, psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, counsellors, social workers, practitioners, educators, coaches, and consultants. It is also suitable for anyone who is interested in the appreciation of mindfulness and human flourishing.

AUTISTIC - The ultimate guide to surviving in the wild neurotypical world
The human being tends to stigmatise and brand anything that isn't in keeping with the majority as wrong, categorising it as a disease or disorder. When put through this unfair test, all different ways of thinking and processing are condemned to failure. This is what autistic people have been subjected to for decades: if you're unable to adapt to society, I'll exclude you from it, and only because you've got a different processing system that doesn't fit in with the way the majority processes information. For as long as we maintain the archetype of autism as a disease, or at the very least, a disorder, those who look for the easy way out: eradicate and side-line it, will continue to exist. Only through conceptualising autism as a form of neurodivergence and a different way of perceiving the world will we be able to help change how it's seen and understood. This conceptual transformation will come as a result of changing the world, not autistic people. Daniel Mill獺n L籀pez is a graduate in Clinical and Health Psychology from Madrid Complutense University. He's been working with autistic people of all ages for over 15 years. He did his training and gained experience in the field of autism through the Asociaci籀n de Padres de Ni簽os Autistas and the Deletrea diagnostic team, among others. He was the director and line manager at the Asociaci籀n de Padres de Ni簽os Autistas de Badajoz, where he undertook innovative therapies in the region, such as the creation of therapy groups for children with Asperger's syndrome, the development of awareness programmes, and the launch of diagnostic tools for paediatricians and other health professionals. He currently offers therapy and diagnostic services for people around the world.
Trauma and Blockages in Coaching
Blockages to be solved with coaching are often the result of repressed traumatic experiences of a person or their ancestors. Pictorial models will guide the reader into the multi-layered landscape of the soul and its principles. Along the way, the book decodes traumas as the soul's fundamental building blocks and follows them back to their origins: existential limit-experiences and their common denominator, the splitting of the soul. The consequences of this autonomous survival mechanism affect all areas of life, starting from the unconscious. Therefore, they are not accessible by conventional methods working with the conscious mind. The presented integrative approach provides means and ways that significantly expand the potential of coaching.

Therapy with Substance
A revolutionary exploration of the use of psychoactive and psychedelic drugs in psychotherapy. Psychedelics drugs were routinely used in clinical research and psychotherapy until the 1960s. Since then they have been illegal except for a short period in the 1990s in Switzerland. During this window of opportunity, Dr Fischer began using psychedelics to assist the progress of those of her patients who were stuck. This book is a description of her use of psychedelic assisted psychotherapy; the groupwork, the technical approach, the substances themselves and how to work with them. There is a special focus on the preparation of the mindset, the setting and the integration as these are the most important determinants of good outcomes. This is a unique account and the definitive guide for the new generation of psychedelic psychotherapists.
Opportunities in Solution-Focused Interviewing
Written by the developers of the microanalysis of opportunities approach, this book describes how clinicians can use this model when listening and responding to clients in solution-focused therapy, training, coaching, and supervision.
The Christ Cure
A HANDBOOK FOR THE BROKENA valuable guide for anyone dealing with PTSD, trauma and tragedy, family members of trauma victims, clergy who seek a better understanding of psychology, and for counselors who seek a better understanding of the role of faith in healing from trauma.THE CHRIST CURE is comprehensive handbook of healing for victims of trauma and their families, guiding the reader through a unique path of true restoration, inspired by the life and works of the Apostle Paul (a survivor of multiple traumas), by modern day mentors, the humbling personal experiences of the author, Psychologist, Navy veteran and former Member of Congress Dr. Tim Murphy, and reinforced by solid scientific research.Dr. Murphy's book is a faith foundation guide for healing the psychological problems in the wake of trauma. Awakened by his own failures, the author grasped for ways out of his deep depression and re-discovered inspiration in the life and works of the Apostle Paul, who himself lived a life filled with major traumatic experiences. It offers new insights into how life threatening abuse, chronic stress and self-inflicted trauma affects us physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, and most importantly, how we can heal.In the book, Dr. Murphy candidly describes his own fall from grace, his battle with depression and his humble confession that while he was trying to save the world he was losing his own soul; disconnecting from his faith and family. He walks the reader through his return to the Bible and his discovery of a great mentor for healing from trauma--the Apostle Paul.Paul the Apostle suffered several dozen severe traumas including whippings, stoning, shipwrecks, trials, imprisonment, abandonment, and a looming death sentence. Modern psychological research suggests any one of these traumas should have been emotionally crippling for him. Instead, Paul grew stronger and more courageous. Unique to this book is the foundation of biblical pillars for healthy treatment of trauma all supported by research and scripture including fitness, sleep, healthy eating, healthy relaxation, resilience, resistance, recovery, and renewal. Within each stage the reader is challenged to choose between sets of dichotomies, one leading to healing, while the other worsens our problems. Throughout, the reader is empowered through their own suffering to become stronger in their relationships and faith: Building Strength instead of WeaknessCourage over FearVigilance over VulnerabilityHope over DespairGuilt over ShameForgiveness over CondemnationAcceptance of Faith, Trust, Grace and MissionPost-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) effects tens of millions with symptoms of depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, broken relationships, isolation, and suicidal thoughts. Current treatment approaches include counseling and medication, but this often leaves many still struggling in darkness for years. Here, readers are guided on a very different path lit by a beacon of faith. THE CHRIST CURE: 10 Biblical Ways to Heal Your Mind from Trauma, Tragedy, and PTSD provides much-need help and guidance to "the broken" from secular to scriptural; illustrated with inspirational stories of those who are winning their own battles.

Who the Hell is Carl Jung?
For students, teachers and smart-thinkers, our carefully structured, jargon-free series provides the base knowledge needed to get your head around complicated theories of brilliant intellectuals. Written in an accessible and engaging way, each book takes you through the life and influences of one great thinker, before taking a deep dive into three of their key theories in plain English. Smart thinking made easy! Carl Jung is one of psychology's biggest pioneers whose deep understanding of the human mind enabled him to create a bridge between our conscious and unconscious. Beginning with his life story and how the people he met and events that occurred along the way impacted his thinking, we then take a deep dive into his theories. We look at Jung's ideas on the human psyche and personality, and his understanding of the unconscious and archetypes before exploring his practical ideas and methods of 'inner work' and therapy. Explaining Jung's work in a way that is easily understandable, we hope, too, that it will be inspirational for anyone new to his work.

Introduction to Internal Family Systems
A highly accessible introduction to a therapeutic approach that brings our inner "parts" into harmony and allows our core Self to lead We're all familiar with self-talk, self-doubt, self-judgment--yet most of us still view ourselves as if we have one uniform mind. Dr. Richard Schwartz's breakthrough was recognizing that we each contain an "internal family" of distinct parts--and that treating these parts with curiosity, respect, and empathy vastly expands our capacity to heal. Over the past two decades, Internal Family Systems (IFS) has transformed the practice of psychotherapy. With Introduction to Internal Family Systems, the creator of IFS presents the ideal layperson's guide for understanding this empowering, effective, and non-pathologizing approach to self-discovery and healing. Here, Dr. Schwartz shares evidence, case studies, and self-care tools to help you: - Shift from the limiting "mono-mind" paradigm into an appreciation of your marvelous, multidimensional nature - Unburden your wounded parts from extreme beliefs, emotions, and addictions - Demystify the most commonly misunderstood parts--the Exiles, Managers, and Firefighters - Transform your most challenging parts from inner obstacles to invaluable allies - Embrace the existence of innate human goodness--in yourself and others - Connect with the true Self that is greater than the sum of your parts "The most wonderful discovery I have made is that as you do this work, you release, or liberate, what I call your Self or your True Self--the calm, compassionate essence of who you are," says Dr. Schwartz. "When the Self becomes the leading intelligence in our lives, we create more harmony--both within ourselves and in our external lives." For therapists, their clients, and anyone interested in understanding and healing themselves, here is an essential guide to a revolutionary approach to self-realization, mental wellness, and transformation.
Resilient African Women
Africans hold a taboo in talking about mental and spiritual health hazards and disorders. Africans are afraid to discuss the spirits that are assumed responsible for spiritual or mental disorders. They hold the truth that spirits travel any distance in seconds or at most in a few minutes. They can be angry when you speak negatively about them and this can cause more havoc than the one the victim is suffering. At the same time, they are afraid of the surrounding people who hear them mention the suffering inflicted by the spirit against them. Where does this fear come from, and why is the fear strong and real? How can they be healed if they are not allowed to mention the source of their health problem? In this book, I shed light on this complex situation. What led these resilient African women to break the taboos? This book shows the African women resilience in taking the lead in the struggle against life-threatening issues. Where the battle is the fiercest, God places his best army. Meet the resilient and powerful women who had enough of the taboos and decided to liberate their family and themselves from the situation and thereby their community.About the AuthorGodian Ejiogu is a spiritual caregiver and chaplain for African roots in the Netherlands. Precarities of 21st Century Childhoods
This book locates internally focused, critical perspectives regarding the social, political, emotional, and mental growth of children. Through the radical openness afforded by psychoanalytic and related frameworks, this volume illuminates, promotes, and helps situate subjectivities that are often blotted out for both the child and society. The overall emphasis is on motifs of lostness and foundness, in terms of the geographies of the psycho-social, and how such motifs govern and regulate what have come to count as the normative indexes of childhood as well as how they exclude other real childhoods.

Etiopathogenic Theories and Models in Depression
This book reviews the different theories and models that seek to explain the causes of depression from different perspectives, from the molecular to the socio-cultural level. Depression is a complex psychopathological construct of high phenotypic heterogeneity, which must be understood as a phenomenon in which different explanatory levels interact with each other. However, very little is known about this interaction. The aim of this book is to provide clinical psychologists and psychiatrists a better knowledge of the interaction of different etiopathogenic levels, in order to help these professionals make better therapeutic decisions when treating depressed patients.Chapters in this volume review etiopathogenic theories and models of depression developed by different disciplines and fields of research, such as clinical psychology, psychiatry, genetics, neurobiology, psychophisiology, psychoneuroendocrinology and psychosocial studies, and examine certain conditions where the integrated consideration of different explanatory levels illuminates how depression originates and is maintained. In each chapter, authors critically review the state of the art in their field of expertise and explain the weak points of their own theories and their possible openness or connection to alternative theories or models. Etiopathogenic Theories and Models in Depression will be a valuable resource for clinical psychologists, psychiatrists and other health professionals working with depressed patients, as well as to researchers investigating how depression originates and is maintained, presenting an integrated perspective of high translational value for clinical practice.
Trauma Sequelae
Experiences of violence, sexual abuse, accidents, disasters or deaths of close relatives or friends, and other extreme situations can lead to trauma-related disorders. These long-term effects are described in detail in the book. In recent years, a variety of interventions have been developed to effectively treat these disorders. This 5th edition has been largely reorganized due to the groundbreaking innovations in which the editor played a decisive role on an international level. Among the innovations are the chapters on: - Complex post-traumatic stress disorder - Childhood violence and its consequences - Low-threshold and innovative interventions - Methods of cognitive behavioral therapy - Psychodynamic approaches The handbook on psychological trauma-related disorders.

Vicarius Animae
Within the vast corpus of the works of C.G. Jung is a paper titled, "Psychotherapists or the Clergy." Apropos of the case Jung makes in that text with respect to what therapists to their betterment have learnt from their colleagues in the clergy, the term that provides the title for this essay-Vicarius Animae-is a designation intended to highlight the soul-mediating, truth-discerning function of the psychotherapist by means of an allusion to the vicarius role that priests have traditionally had within the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches as pastoral facilitators of the cure of souls, and Popes as the representatives of Christ on this earth. Whereas, formerly, throughout the aeons in which these religions held sway, soul (in the sense of the logic of human being-in-the world) had had the form of God, its mediator the form of priest, in our day, post mortem dei, soul has come to have the form of psychological phenomena, its mediator the form of analyst and psychotherapist. In keeping with this, the meaning of the term "Speculative" in the subtitle of this volume is roughly analogous to the meaning that "speculation" and "speculative" had formerly had within the tradition of the Speculative Philosophy to which Hegel belonged. Though Jung, as is well-known, had repeatedly expressed antipathy toward Hegel, even dubbing him on one occasion a "psychologist manqu矇," subsequent Jungian scholarship has clearly shown that the contributions Hegel made to the speculative philosophy of his day fit hand-in-glove with Jung's great insight into psychology's lack of a vantage point outside the psyche to view in from objectively. In this essay, implications for Jungian psychotherapy of this complementarity are explored by means of a focus upon occasions in which, interpreting boldly, the analytic psychotherapist is inspired to give interpretive utterance to the soul situation of the patient by saying "I ..." on his or her behalf. Such "vicarius I-statements," as these may also be called, are not concocted by the therapist. Neither are they given out by him or her as a matter of technique. When authentic, they rather have phenomenon character and are the spontaneous expression in "the form of subject" of what Jung variously referred to as "the coming to consciousness of the psychic process," "the soul's speaking about itself," and "interpretation from above ..."
Coaching Women
Why are there not enough women in leadership positions and how do we 'fix' this? Coaching Women takes a broader perspective on the issue of gender diversity and considers different ways of achieving systemic changes such as a shift to inclusive leadership and a re-think about current work culture and its implications for mental health. Geraldine Gallacher unpacks this nuanced conversation through the lens of women's lived experiences and personal journeys, understanding that there are still many unseen barriers to women's progress. This book gives practical recommendations on how to equip more women with the tools to rethink their relationship with the notion of leadership. Using in depth case studies and interviews, this book: -Focuses on the interplay of a woman's personal journey with complex career structures-Examines the power of stereotypes, leadership, and the double bind dilemma-Highlights key stages where systemic challenges collide with personal identity -Utilises robust research to unpack long held myths about women's confidence-Offers practical suggestions on the best ways to coach women to achieve leadership success Combining Geraldine's practical experience as both a leader and a coach, this book is for anyone in coaching and human resources, as well as those involved in DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion). It is also relevant for all leaders who are keen to adopt an inclusive leadership approach. Mannie and her Mooooody, Disorderly Day
Mannie and her Mooooody, Disorderly Day follows Mannie the cow as she navigates a somewhat surprising and chaotic day on the weather pasture with her bipolar disorder. After beginning her morning with an abnormally bright sun and vivacious disposition, Mannie's mood quickly shifts to cloudy thoughts and extreme misery, forcing her to leave school. With parental guidance (from Mootilda and Sir Loin), Mannie attempts to take the S.S.R.I. train to get her sun back, and, when her symptoms worsen, she does not succumb to failure. Instead, Mannie finds her way home with a beautiful rainbow and regulated emotions. This unparalleled tale follows the special case of a cow experiencing strange shifts, yet persevering and maintaining hope in the face of mental distress, despite the fact that events do not begin in her favor. It aims to shine an unprecedented, yet accurate, light on mood disorders and treatment for children, using punny characters and sayings, while also providing an underlying moral about the power of fierce aspirations.

Counselling the Abused Christian Woman
This book sets out a simple guide for counsellors to help an abused woman move from being a victim to taking control of her life and relationships. First the woman is helped to understand if her positive personality traits such as hopefulness and deep empathy have resulted in her missing potential warning signs in an abusive relationship. We then move on to determine whether the person abusing the woman has features of a personality disorder. Such individuals are often abusive because of their unhealthy beliefs and attitudes towards others. If this is the case then the woman needs to let go of the hope that she can change her abuser as well as the guilt she may be carrying for the relationship not working. Other unhealthy past relationships are explored and these include her parents or other family members which may have predisposed her to tolerate abusive behaviour. The next stage includes educating the woman about practical strategies of assertiveness to deal with the abusers in her life. Throughout the sessions we provide her with the compassion of a listening ear, and validation for her courage. We help her understand that even though she has not received the love she had hoped for, she is still a beloved worthwhile child of God. She is then able to make a decision as to whether to stay in the abusive relationship or leave. In either case the goal is for her to take control of her life, deal assertively with the unhealthy people who are abusing her and learn how to choose healthy friends and become a healthy person herself.

This Therapist Guide for the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Enhanced Behavior Therapy for Trichotillomania (AEBT-T), and the accompanying client workbook, is a 10-session program designed to teach therapists how to help clients reduce their pulling, think differently about the internal experiences that trigger pulling, and learn to live a more valued life. The approach blends traditional behavior therapy approaches of habit reversal training and stimulus control techniques with a more contemporary ACT-based approach. This ACT-based approach teaches clients to behave flexibly and concert with their values whenever they face the uncomfortable thoughts, feelings, urges, and cravings that often trigger the pulling. Since its original publication in 2008, AEBT-T has been studied extensively and shown to be effective in individual and group format using both face-to-face and telehealth modalities. Emerging evidence suggests the treatment can also be successfully applied to older children and adolescents, and this latest version of the manual describes how the treatment can be modified for these populations. Fully updated to reflect new research and organized in an easy-to-use session-by-session format with accompanying therapy support forms and materials, this intervention has proven efficacy and will be a valuable resource and powerful tool for clinicians who commonly treat TTM, OCD and related disorders.
