Balancing on Quicksand

Palgrave M 出版
2021/09/05 出版

This book explores the precarious nature of life, and the ways in which power, binary ways of thinking and Othering create personal, social and political difficulties. By exploring an array of different concerns -including loss and grief, our relationship to other animals, race and sexuality - contributors explore how attention to our own subjective experience and relational ways of thinking can help manage these difficulties. The many contributing authors go well beyond formulaic academic discourse. They adopt a far more personal and reflective approach to their topic areas. As a result, some chapters are emotional, others political, and some professional. Throughout, readers are offered examples of how useful a reflective stance can be, to understanding some of the more meaningful things in life, or as a corrective to our power based, normative, instructive discourses.

Complicities

Palgrave M 出版
2021/09/02 出版

This Open Access book offers a model of the human subject as complicit in the systems that structure human society and the human psyche which draws together clinical research with theory from both psychology and the humanities to advance a more social just theory and practice. Beginning from the premise that we cannot separate ourselves from the systems that precede and formulate us as subjects, the author argues that, in reckoning with this complicity, a model of subjectivity can be created that moves beyond binaries and identity politics. In doing so, the book examines how we might develop a more socially just psychological theory and practice, which is both systems work and intra-psychological work. In bringing together ways of thinking developed in the humanities with clinical psychotherapeutic practice, this book offers one interdisciplinary take on key questions of social and emotional efficacy in action-oriented psychotherapy work.

Feminist Therapist

2021/08/24 出版

Jessica Heriot discovered Women's Liberation in 1969 and became an avid feminist. A few years later, she was introduced to "feminist therapy" and decided to use her social work degree to counsel women. In 1973, she and four other women founded the Women's Growth Center in Baltimore (still in existence today) where psychotherapy for women was rooted in a feminist perspective. After working at the Women's Growth Center and at Jewish Family Services, she opened a private practice where she saw clients, primarily women, for 32 years. In 1992, she received a doctorate in social work from the University of Maryland School of Social Work and was an adjunct professor there for nine years. During her tenure, she designed the school's first course on clinical practice with women. Her dissertation about the role of mothers in incest families, "Maternal Protectiveness Following the Disclosure of Intrafamilial Child Sexual Abuse" was published in The Journal of Interpersonal Violence. Her first foray into writing began with a chapter, "Double Bind: Healing the Split" in Women Changing Therapy, published in 1983. She co-edited The Use of Personal Narratives in the Helping Professions: A Teaching Casebook, published in 2002. The book described individual's personal experiences with mental health issues and problems in living she thought would be useful to students in social work, psychology, and counseling. Her current book, Feminist Therapist: How Second Wave Feminism Changed Psychotherapy and Me recounts the seminal contributions of feminism on women's psychology, psychotherapy, and its impact on her own life and career."The author begins with a personal history that many women will understand. Although her own experience may differ from someone else's, her reactions/ behaviors will be very familiar. She has a rich history counseling women and describes her work within a psychological perspective. The book is a personal catharsis, which should not dissuade anyone, male or female, from appreciating the challenges faced by many women. Perhaps it is a prelude to #MeToo. Perhaps a better understanding of themselves could prevent some women from becoming entrapped in unwanted experiences.""I especially enjoyed this interesting book when Dr. Heriot related the stories of encounters with her patients. Riding the Second Wave should be required reading for all future psychiatrists.""This is a wonderful book, beautifully written. I met Dr. Heriot when we were both Ph.D. students in the early 1980's, and age cohorts as well. Reading the first part of the book about her life in those decades was like revisiting my own in many ways. But the second part of the book, about her life as a therapist and about therapy itself, as feminism continued to impact psychology and psychotherapy, was captivating. Chapter Nine, "Finding a Therapeutic Home", is worth the entire purchase price alone. Her ability to concisely explain what various theories of practice are, and how she wove her way through them to where she ". . . settled on a theory of practice", demonstrate her encompassing knowledge of and clarity of not only her own experience, but of a typically social work process of becoming a master therapist. I wish my therapists had been like her.""Jessica Heriot is a dedicated feminist. Her efforts in helping women to understand and overcome the role that has been expected of women is commendable. Sounds like she has made a real impact. Kudos to her!"

The Hauntology of Everyday Life

Sadeq,Rahimi  著
Ingram 出版
2021/08/18 出版

This volume develops a comprehensive framework for applying the theory of hauntology to everyday life from ethnographic and clinical points of view. The central argument of the book is that all human experience is fundamentally haunted, and that a shift from ontological theory of subjective experience to a hauntological one is necessary and has urgent implications. Building on the notion of hauntology outlined by Derrida, the discussions are developed within the frameworks of psychoanalytic theory, specifically Jacques Lacan's object relational theory of ego development and his structural reading of Freud's theory of the psychic apparatus and its dynamics; along with the Hegelian ontology of the negative and its later modifications by 20th century philosophers such as Heidegger and Derrida; and the semiotics of difference introduced by Saussure and worked by Jakobson and others. This book argues and demonstrates the immediate relevance of hauntological analysis in everyday life by providing a microanalysis of the roles played by power, meaning and desire; and by using vignettes and data from ethnographic research and clinical settings, as well as references to literature, movies and other cultural products.

Inhuman Relations

Scott,Becker  著
Spring 出版
2021/08/16 出版

Inhuman Relations, Vol. 7 of the Uniform Edition of the Writings of James Hillman, contains what could be described as Hillman's more "clinical" writings. Hillman chose the title, Inhuman Relations, to emphasize the archetypal forces that shape our human interactions-the myths behind our messes, as he says in this volume. With this volume, Hillman decided to return to his groundbreaking book on soul-making, Re-Visioning Psychology, and organize most of essays under that book's original operative headings: Personifying or Imagining Things, Pathologizing or Falling Apart, Dehumanizing or Soul-Making, and Psychologizing or Seeing Through. The 24 essays in this volume illustrate these operations and allow the reader not only to appreciate their wide-ranging content, but also to become aware of their experiential influence.

Trauma and Identity

Ingram 出版
2021/08/12 出版

In this book Vivian Broughton brings together all the important theoretical concepts on the topics of trauma, trauma survival and identity, developed by Professor Dr Franz Ruppert over the past 30 years, known as Identity Oriented Psychotrauma Therapy (IOPT). This book is likely to be of interest to therapists and professionals who work with people and their life difficulties, as well as anyone interested in understanding themselves better. Trauma underlies most of people's life problems, in particular traumas that happen very early in life. For the newly created infant the experience of not being wanted, not being seen, welcomed, loved and valued for who he or she really is, makes for a deeply devastating start to life. These early traumatic experiences then stay, buried deep in the psyche, and inform and influence the person's ability to function as an adult, to feel confident, form good relationships and be happy. The essence of living a good life is based on our ability to know who we are, and trauma, more than anything else, is what disrupts and even destroys this ability. Vivian is a Gestalt psychotherapist with over 30 years' experience. She has worked with IOPT concepts and the Intention Method therapeutic practice for over 15 years. She brings to this book her long experience as a psychotherapist and as an IOPT Psychotrauma therapist, together with her own particular thinking about Ruppert's work.

Flexibility Within Fidelity

Ingram 出版
2021/08/11 出版

Among mental health researchers, there is a consensus that empirically supported treatments (ESTs) have favorable outcomes and that the outcomes are typically better than other approaches. The majority of these are available as therapist manuals, brief books, or other extended volumes. However, among mental health service providers, there is often a view that these manuals and books can be formulaic and rigid, and likely insensitive to individual patient needs or presentations. With these conflicting perspectives in place, there is a need for accurate communication and reconciliation. Flexibility within Fidelity identifies how effective ESTs can be implemented with both integrity and flexibility. The book is comprised of chapters focusing on specific ESTs for identified problem areas amongst adults and children/adolescents, including anxiety disorders, PTSD, pain management, and depression among others. Chapter authors focus on the specific treatment components that are required to maintain fidelity and the features of the EST which can be applied with flexibility, promoting a personalized implementation. Written in an accessible style featuring in-depth clinical discussions, this book will equip mental health practitioners with the tools to implement ESTs across client presentations.

Introduction to Kleinian-based Integrative Psychotherapy

Ingram 出版
2021/08/06 出版

The book seeks to translates Kleinian object relations theory and practice and Bionian theory of thinking into cognitive and behavioral concepts and application to treat mild and moderate borderline patients. The author breaks down the Kleinian paranoid-schizoid and depressive positions into seven stages to help therapists identify, process and target core clinical components of the two stages. The Kleinian and Bionian concepts and practices are also translated into concrete unfulfilled physical, emotional and social needs of the infant/child so that the therapist can identify, process and meet these specific needs of the patient in the clinical settings. To help the therapist and patient assess, monitor and determine the target of treatment, DSMV diagnostic criteria is employed during each of the seven stages along with other short measures. The therapist seeks to first identify, process and regulate the patient's persecutory anxiety and consequent splitting and projection by helping them reclaiming them as their own. Patients then begin to introject the goodness of the significant other by to regulating their envious attacks on their dependency and hate of the other. By reducing their envy and hate, they are now able to learn about love from the other which helps them to bring together the split bad and good parts of the other together in their mind. They are now ready to integrate the bad and good parts of the other and their own as not two separate parts but that of the whole person. The hateful and loving parts of the other as well as themselves are the same person. They are now ready to face the ambivalence between love for the other, and hate for their independence of them. As they do so, they begin to face their aggression by showing concern for the other. They feel guilty and remorse for the hurt and damage they have inflicted upon the very person they love and mourn for the loss. The ensuing sadness and yearning leads to recalling the goodness of the other, and feelings genuine gratitude and urge to repair and restore the damaged others.Repeated internal and emotional processes of repairing and restoration leads to symbol formation - the process of substitution the hate and destruction of the loved object with more benign objects. Symbol formation leads to higher levels of cognition and affectivity that facilitates sublimation. Unprocessed negative emotions are sublimated into constructive activities such as exercising, painting, meditating, writing and so on.Sublimation lays the groundwork for creativity - the process of translation sublimated activated into patterns and flow. It is no longer about just writing or painting as an activity but more about the flow of what is written and painted. It is no longer about just watching your breath to relax but more to be at onement with the flow of the breath.

Treating Complex Trauma

Springer 出版
2021/08/04 出版

This forward-thinking volume outlines several approaches to therapeutic treatment for individuals who have experienced complex childhood and adult trauma, providing a novel framework for helping patients with a number of challenging symptoms, with clinical hypothesis testing and solid therapeutic relationships as a vital foundation. Responding to the intense disagreement and competition among clinicians championing their own approaches, the book identifies the strengths and limitations of multiple therapeutic approaches, addressing the need for qualified clinicians to be versed in multiple theories and techniques in order to alleviate suffering in their clients. Among the topics discussed: How to choose specific therapeutic methods and when to shift techniquesThe neurobiology of trauma and management of fearCultural and ethnic considerations in trauma treatmentAddressing avoidance and creating a safe therapeutic environmentManagement of dissociation, substance abuse, and anger Treating Complex Trauma: Combined Theories and Methods serves as a practical guide for clinicians looking to expand their knowledge of approaches for treating complex trauma. It aims to provide clinicians with options for different therapeutic methods, along with the necessary context for them to select the most effective approach in their treatments. "For the first time in the professional literature we are finally afforded a clear, cogent, and detailed explication of complex trauma and the multifaceted parameters of treatment. Dr. Tamara McClintock Greenberg provides perspicacious insight and clinical wisdom only a seasoned career therapist can yield. Offering sophisticated and nuanced distinctions between complex trauma and PTSD, she shows how treatment is necessarily contextual and tailored to the unique clinical and personality dynamics of the sufferer that is thoroughly client specific within the therapeutic dyad. She dispenses with simplistic and supercilious attitudes that embarrassingly boast a uniform or manualized treatment to trauma, instead carefully taking into consideration polysymptomatic, neurobiological, and socialcultural differences that inform the interpersonal, emotional, and safety milieu from the beginning of treatment to stabilization, the working-through process, and then onto successful recovery. This is a must-read book for those in training and senior clinicians alike." --Jon Mills, PsyD, PhD, ABPP, Faculty, Postgraduate Programs in Psychoanalysis & Psychotherapy, Adelphi University, NY; author of Treating Attachment Pathology"Dr. Greenberg has written an invaluable book on treating complex trauma. She delves into multiple approaches, assessing what techniques the client can tolerate at a given therapeutic stage. She covers how to maintain consistency and connection through a flexible approach and avoid pitfalls. This is a must read for clinicians wishing to treat clients with complex PTSD." --Louann Brizendine, MD, Clinical Professor UCSF; author of The Female Brain

The etiology of addiction at various levels of analysis is discussed, including neurobiology, cognition, groups, culture, and environment, which simultaneously lays out the foundations and high-level discourse to serve both novice and expert researchers and clinicians. Importantly, the volume explores the prevention and treatment of such addictions as alcohol, tobacco, novel drugs, food, gambling, sex, work, shopping, the internet, and several seldom-investigated behaviors (e.g. love, tanning, or exercise).

Fight Back

Lulu.com 出版
2021/08/01 出版

I write this book to share principles about how to fight back. The devil is tricky he knows how to beat you up to a place where you feel homicidal or suicidal. If you're not careful he'll catch you when your guard is down spiritually, emotionally and physically beat you down. This book is written to help you learn how to put your dukes up and fight back. It doesn't have anything to do with a physical fight because the word of God plainly teaches us it is not by power not by might but by his spirit that we prevail. There so many times when I am under attack that my flesh really wants to respond. I have learned I lose every time when my flesh responds. I have to respond in the spirit realm.

Jungian Psychotherapy and Contemporary Infant Research

Mario,Jacoby  著
Routledge 出版
2021/07/29 出版

Infant research observations and hypotheses have raised serious questions about previous mainstream psychoanalytic theories of earliest childhood development. In Jungian Psychotherapy and Contemporary Infant Research, Mario Jacoby looks at how these observations are relevant to psychotherapeutic and Jungian analytical practice. Using recent findings in infant research, along with practical examples from therapeutic practice, he shows how early emotional exchange processes, though becoming superimposed in adult life by rational control and various defenses, remain operative and become reactivated in situations of intimacy. Jungian Psychotherapy and Contemporary Infant Research will be of interest to both professionals and students involved in analytical psychology and psychotherapy.

Rationality and Scientific Lifestyle for Health

Springer 出版
2021/07/21 出版

This book argues that, to be healthy, human beings should love nature and stay in balance with it as much as possible. In other words: do not unbalance nature so that your own balance is not disturbed. The best and healthiest way for human beings to live is to find balance in life and nature. In this regard, the book discusses useful, nutritious, functional foods, nutraceuticals and antioxidants, and how natural molecules, which are provided by nature, can be the best medicine for human beings. At a molecular level, stress is defined by the presence of unbalanced free radicals in the body. Most diseases - especially type 2 diabetes, which accounts for the majority of diabetics - can be traced back to this problem. Our scientific evidence indicates that type 2 diabetes isn't just a disease resulting from sugar, but also from stress. The book seeks to promote a healthier lifestyle by considering the psychoemotional dimension of wellness. And finally, it contends that good sleep is at the root of health and happiness for humanity, and that unbalanced free radicals are expelled from the body during restful sleep. The authors hope that this book will be a helpful guide and source of peace for readers, especially given their need for inner calm during the COVID-19 pandemic, and that the suggestions provided will show them the way to a better life.

Psychosis and Extreme States

Bret,Fimiani  著
Palgrave M 出版
2021/07/21 出版

"This brilliant and beautifully written book invokes a radical reorientation of the treatment of psychosis" Juliet Flower MacCannell, Author of Figuring Lacan and The Hysteric's Guide to the Future Female Subject. "Bret Fimiani's book offers an illuminating presentation of the Lacanian approach to psychosis thanks to his clear style which presents Lacanian concepts with a wonderful accuracy, illustrated by examples from his psychoanalytic practice. The dynamic of his investigation challenges the fear of psychosis with testimonies of lived experiences, the Hearing Voices Network, and analysts who claim the unclaimed intelligence at work in psychosis." Francoise Davoine, co-author of History Beyond Trauma This book advances a theory of transference-in-psychosis with the aim of provoking a change in the way the experience of psychosis is understood and thus, clinically treated. It examines the function of 'ethics' in the 'installation' of transference in the treatment of psychosis and contends that the aim of the psychoanalytic experience is the creation of a new ethic for the analysand and for the treatment. Beginning from the premise that the body of the psychotic is a site of social contestation, the author draws upon the work of Freud, Lacan, Deleuze & Guattari and Apollon to reframe the problem of the 'body' (as an effect of language) and its relation to transference, and ethics, in treating psychosis. It argues that psychosis still has much to teach psychoanalysis about how psychoanalysis must continue to change in order to create/offer an approach that is effective for psychosis (versus neurosis) and provides a comprehensive psychoanalytic theory of psychosis that derives, at its core, from the experience of psychosis itself. The book's synthesis of clinical and 'peer model' principles will provide readerswith a way to understand and navigate potential transference impasses often encountered with purely clinical approaches. In doing so it provides a valuable new framework for practitioners and scholars working in clinical psychology, psychoanalysis, philosophy, critical theory, psychiatry and social work.
