Police Organizations and Culture
Sworn to protect and serve, police officers who stray into deviant behavior may become a citizen's worst nightmare. An honest look at the formal and informal processes of becoming blue, Police Organizations and Culture is a unique combination of Chief Scott Silverii, PhD's academic research and more than 25 years in law enforcement. The book seeks to answer the ultimate question: Why do police organizations and individual cops behave the way they do. Right or wrong, there is a powerful culture that controls behavior and expectation. Chief Silverii explains how personal and professional lives are changed, and what effects that has on a public dependent upon their police agencies maintaining an ethos of Serve and Protect. Police Organizations and Culture is the first of its kind to combine an anthropological lense for examining policing's cultural expectancies with real-life experiences. By exploring the subculture of policing in vivid detail, it exposes the causes behind the separation from organizational ideals and a false sense of organizational entitlement. Chief Silverii's decades in police special operations groups and administration also lends a guiding perspective to officers or would-be officers who want to make law enforcement their chosen profession.

Geopolitics at the Internet's Core
Contentious geopolitical conflicts over digital technologies have arisen around a complex set of technical specifications at the Internet's core. One of these is the Internet Protocol (IP), designed for addressing and routing information to its destination. China redesigning the Internet? Ukraine asking that Russia be disconnected from the Internet? The U.S. 'surrendering' the Internet? The Internet Protocol - rightly or not - has been at the center of many digital policy concerns for decades. In examining entanglements between IP and public interest issues, Geopolitics at the Internet's Core illuminates how technical infrastructure is now a proxy for political and economic power. Ongoing global controversies over the Internet Protocol ecosystem hint at its importance and why IP is a flashpoint mediating broader conflicts in various cultural and historic contexts. Geopolitics at the Internet's Core analyzes the trajectory and possible futures of the Internet Protocol as a space mediating geopolitical and domestic controversies in an increasingly contentious digital world; it explains the IP ecosystem, a complex combination of virtual resources, abstract specifications, tangible infrastructure, functionally specific systems, and the institutions and rules that design and govern these systems. With a view toward the future and insights into the governance of emerging technologies, this book identifies eight IP-related levers of power that illuminate technology governance debates. Opening up the black box of the Internet Protocol and related global governance challenges, it explains the political battles and the stakes of these battles at the heart of the Internet.

Military Operations in Response to Domestic Emergencies and Global Pandemics
This open access book provides a comparative analysis of the deployment of the military in domestic operations, the use of the armed forces during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the impact of that deployment on civil-military relations in 26 countries worldwide. The book examines the legal and constitutional regulations under which the military can serve in domestic roles, and the extent of domestic deployment before the COVID-19 pandemic. It focuses on the roles in which the military served during the pandemic, the resources available, and the readiness and effectiveness of the military response. The volume addresses whether or not the pandemic response was securitized, the extent of civilian oversight and control, the accountability measures in place, and the impact of the COVID-19 deployment on the military's image. The volume captures the lessons learnt from the COVID-19 deployment and the implications for future force design, structure, and organizational transformation. Since almost all countries used their military in some capacity to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, this volume offers an opportunity to compare use of the armed forces to provide domestic humanitarian assistance and disaster response.
Waves of Discontent
After a period of relative calm in congressional elections prior to 2006, America has experienced a series of highly competitive, volatile national elections. Since then, at least one of the US House, US Senate, and presidency have flipped party control--often with a large House or Senate seat swing--with the exception of the 2012 election. In Waves of Discontent, Jacob F.H. Smith argues that a pervasive feeling of displeasure in the American public has caused this increase in electoral volatility. Conducting statistical analyses of a wide array of surveys, Smith found that these feelings of displeasure translate to lower turnout among voters from the president's party and a higher percentage of independents voting for the other party. Subsequently, he conducted a content analysis of New York Times articles to look at the connection between unrest in American society and seat swings in congressional elections, even before the existence of polling. Examining the consequences of volatility in congressional elections reveals that political amateurs are more likely to win in wave years than in normal years. Based on this data, Smith presents a new theory about the policy process--the policy doom loop--in which frustration among voters at both the inability of Congress to pass policy and anger at policies that actually do pass results in even more churn in congressional elections. Waves of Discontent offers some suggestions to promote constructive policymaking efforts in Washington to reduce frustration in the electorate.

Erdogan's Civil Death Project
Toward the end of the last century, the Hizmet Movement emerged in Turkish society as a major proponent of civil society. "Hizmet," also known as the G羹len Movement after its spiritual teacher Fethullah G羹len, achieved prominent recognition for its educational and multicultural work in T羹rkiye and elsewhere in the world. Hizmet, with its broad spiritual base, entrepreneurial prowess, moral compass, savvy media use, community service (schools, hospitals, and humanitarian work), and global reach, posed a political and social challenge to the Erdogan regime's growing autocracy and evermore evident corruption. Erdogan came to view Hizmet as his nemesis that roadblocked his march toward authoritarian rule. Because Hizmet called into question their unethical values and anti-democratic maneuvers, Erdogan and AKP moved to isolate, denigrate, marginalize, dismantle, and suppress Hizmet. This included oppressing anyone opposing the government as associated with the "Movement," even if they were not, as a way of being rid of them, too. Following the shadowy 2016 coup attempt, the government radically escalated its systemic oppression with mass arrests and detentions, initiating a lawless process that suppressed fundamental human rights like freedom, security, and the right to a fair trial as state policy, sidelining international law and T羹rkiye's internal law. This book makes the case for a regime politicide project against Hizmet in violation of both international law and Turkish law. "This volume's insightful brilliance and careful thoroughness together offer a key instrument with which the outside world can better understand the simple and complex horrors associated with Erdogan's despotic regime." --Ori Z Soltes, PhD, Georgetown University. Author of Between Thought and Action: An Intellectual Biography of Fethullah G羹len "An outstanding book describing the devastating effect Erdogan's attack on the G羹len Movement has had not only on the innocent victims of his 'hate campaign' but also on the freedom, democracy and prosperity he promised in his early years." --Andrea Barron, International human rights observer and advocate for torture survivors Washington, D.C. "... a harrowing and meticulously documented analysis of President Erdogan's campaign to eradicate the Hizmet movement." --Johan Heymans, Managing Partner at Van Steenbrugge Advocaten; Johan Vande Lanotte, Former Deputy Prime Minister, Belgium (from the Afterword) Turkiye, Fethullah Gulen, Hizmet, Human Rights, Persecution
Shameless
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERFrom the first content creator to interview President Biden, leading progressive voice Brian Tyler Cohen takes a step back from the day-to-day news cycle to explain how American politics has turned into such a dumpster fire--and what Democrats need to do to get us out of it.In Shameless, Brian Tyler Cohen lays bare the long con of the modern Republican Party. While the radical right continues hiding behind gaslighting maneuvers, artificial slogans, and hollow catchphrases, Cohen's unflinching narrative illuminates the realities and dangers of the ever-widening gulf between the vaunted Republican brand and their actual behavior. With a foreword by Congressman Jamie Raskin, drawing on interviews and insights from Pete Buttigieg, Mehdi Hasan, Jen Psaki, and other luminaries of the Left, Cohen reveals: How Republicans have leaned on their histor-ical branding to give themselves a permission structure to behave antithetically to everything they say;Why the mainstream media has proved itself a willing participant in this ongoing farce-- particularly since the rise of toxic, sensational-ist MAGA mania; andWhat lessons Democrats can glean from a clear-eyed view of the landscape we're operating in--and the steps we must take to rebalance our political landscape.During this all-hands-on-deck moment in our his-tory, Shameless is essential reading for those seeking to understand our dire situation, and a rallying cry for those fighting to preserve democracy.

The Materiality of Knowledge
This book develops a materialist conception of knowledge by uncovering its entanglement with the history of colonial capitalism. Against accounts that frame cognitive capitalism and the knowledge economy as recent developments, it argues that these formations are rooted in long-standing processes of dispossession, extraction, and exploitation inaugurated during colonial modernity. Drawing on postcolonial critique, Marxian categories, and case studies from New Spain, it reframes concepts such as human capital, intellectual labour, and knowledge accumulation. The work highlights how colonial power structured hierarchies of knowledge through race, labour, and difference, and how these structures persist in contemporary capitalism. Attention is given to struggles over knowledge, from early colonial encounters to present-day resistance against its commodification. This book offers an original contribution to the critique of political economy, proposing a historically grounded account of knowledge as a site of both exploitation and struggle.

Global Business and Local Struggle
In the quest for human rights justice for communities and workers whose rights are breached by transnational businesses, non-judicial mechanisms (NJMs) are often deployed, but how effective are they? This book creates a blueprint for reforming transnational human rights NJMs and for helping communities and workers to use them. Through 587 interviews with 1100 individuals over five years of research in Indonesia and India, the authors delve into the practical workings of NJMs in diverse industries and contexts. The findings reveal that while NJMs are limited in providing standalone remedies, they can play a valuable role within a broader regulatory ecosystem. Combining rich empirical data, multi-method analyses and a new theoretical framework, the authors argue for a multi-pronged approach to human rights redress. Their findings will advance both academic and policy debates about the merits and shortcomings of NJMs.

Reimagining Social Security
"As America's Social Security program nears a fiscal tipping point, Reimagining Social Security challenges us to think boldly about the future. Combining expert perspectives, global lessons, and practical solutions, this timely book shows how the US can preserve retirement security while empowering individuals and shielding our grandchildren from rising debt and taxes." --Olivia S. Mitchell, professor of business economics and policy, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania Social Security is headed for collapse. How can the United States make its retirement system sustainable without crushing the next generation under a mountain of debt or taxes? America's largest entitlement program turns 90 this year--and it's on life support. There's no trust fund, just IOUs from the federal government and trillions in borrowing to keep the program afloat. By 2033--just eight years from now--Social Security will go bust. If nothing changes, benefits will be slashed by 20 percent or more. However, there is a remedy. Reimagining Social Security: Global Lessons for Retirement Policy Changes explains what is wrong with Social Security and how major retirement program reforms from Canada, Germany, New Zealand, and Sweden could work in the United States. Combining interviews and new analysis, this book lays out real-world solutions that protect seniors, preserve individual liberty, and fit the American economic model. Forget partisan gridlock. This is about smart, tested policies that work. Whether you're a policymaker, scholar, or concerned citizen, this is essential reading for anyone who cares about the future of retirement in America.

Rebalancing the Nuclear Weapons Triad
Since 1960, the United States has maintained a nuclear triad of intercontinental ballistic missiles, nuclear capable strategic bombers and submarine launched ballistic missiles. As technology advanced and new capabilities were developed, the nuclear arsenal quickly expanded. The number of strategic nuclear weapons in the United States peaked during the height of the Cold War with the Soviet Union and then significantly declined as the two countries agreed to lower numbers through a series of treaties. This paper examines the history of the US nuclear weapons triad and how the strategic nuclear force structure might look in 2025 given the recent release of the 2010 Nuclear Posture Review and New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty. The global security outlook is also briefly discussed. Research was conducted through review of government documents, publications from national organizations, and articles written by experts in the field. With the smaller nuclear stockpile the necessity of maintaining all three legs of the triad has been questioned in several publications. For example, a 2009 paper sponsored by the Air Force Association, Triad, Dyad or Monad? Shaping the US Nuclear Force for the Future, recommended the US move to a nuclear dyad by removing the nuclear role of B-52s and B-2s. However, even though the New START ratified in 2010 further reduces the number of nuclear weapons in the stockpile, it maintains the nuclear triad structure for at least the next 10 years. The research concludes that the US nuclear triad should be maintained for at least the next two decades with a 15 to 20 percent further reduction in the nuclear strategic stockpile beyond the New START limits. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
