Irony in International Politics

Ingram 出版
2024/11/22 出版

Irony in International Politics investigates ironic language in international politics, focusing on how political leaders use irony to articulate failures of the liberal international order. Underlining the political, performative, and affective nature of irony in international politics, the book introduces a novel typology of four forms of irony: justice-seeking irony, hegemony-seeking irony, recognition-seeking irony, and disruption-seeking irony. Irony is typically understood as a tool of the underdog who seeks to reveal the hypocritical nature of the powerful, but Irony in International Politics shows that irony is increasingly used by the powerful who expose that there is a wide gap between the ideal and the actual in international politics. Studying cases from Turkey, the United Kingdom, Hungary, the United States, Sweden, Germany, Greece, and Russia, the book illustrates how the post-Cold War era represents a distinct scene of irony with its particular identity struggles and power asymmetries that have prompted ironic reactions.

Yearbook on the African Union Volume 4 (2023)

Ulf,Engel  著
Ingram 出版
2024/11/22 出版

This is the fourth edition of the Yearbook on the African Union (YBAU). The YBAU is first and foremost an academic project that provides an in-depth evaluation and analysis of the institution, its processes, and its engagements. Despite the increased agency in recent years of the African Union in general, and the AU Commission in particular, little is known - outside expert policy or niche academic circles - about the Union's activities. This is the gap the Yearbook on the African Union wants to systematically address. It seeks to be a reference point for in-depth research, evidence-based policy-making and decision-making. Contributors are Ndubuisi Christian Ani, Kwesi Aning, Juliana Abena Appiah, Habibu Yaya Bappah, Bruce Byiers, Annie Barbara Hazviyemurwi Chikwanha, Dawit Yohannes Wondemagegnehu, Debela Fituma, Cheryl Hendricks, Jens Herpolsheimer, Benedikt Kamski, Tony Karbo, Hubert Kinkoh, Klara Leith瓣user, Edefe Ojomo, Francis Onditi, Naila Salihu, Rahel W. Sebhatu, Moussa Soumahoro, Elsie Tachie-Menson, Tim Zajontz.

States and Their Nationals Abroad

Ingram 出版
2024/11/21 出版

In a novel contribution to the field of comparative foreign policy analysis, this book carefully delineates how states, regardless of regime, have formulated policies to deal with their national communities aboard. Some states, depending on their domestic political ideologies, cultures and capabilities, have extensive institutional mechanisms in place for coming to the aid of their nationals abroad. Others, however, have also used these capabilities in adverse ways. Chapters focusing on individual countries explore the rationale behind state policies that differentiate treatment for distinct groups, such as tourists, migrants, and diasporas. Amongst the intriguing findings is the fact that state capacity alone does not explain the ability or willingness of states to assist their nationals abroad in times of need. Furthermore, in some cases, communities abroad can also actively mobilize against their home state, thus play key roles in conflict and even regime change.

Britain's State Collapse

Ingram 出版
2024/11/21 出版

Britain is facing a paradox and an inconsistent, contradictory approach to tackling radicalization, terrorism, foreign espionage networks, and corruption in state institutions. Many inequalities from the past, racist lookout, and discrimination still hurt Britain's social and political stratification on different levels. The paradox of modern security technology and economic, political, and cultural rebalancing has reached a point of tangible multi-polarity. The global security environment has become more complex as conflicts and civil wars are re-emerging with new approaches, ideologies and modern technologies. Cyber-attacks, hybrid threats, terrorism, and disinformation tactics of Hostile States have intensified in the UK and European Union. The conservative Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, slapped his country on the face and bruised, set alight, crushed and damaged its social and economic infrastructure. The Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Brexit reshaped the UK's relationship with its largest trading partner, creating trade barriers that didn't exist. According to the Office for Budget Responsibility, Brexit reduced the UK's long-term economic output. Economic pressures have created significant inequality, with a stark divide between the wealthy and those struggling to make ends meet. There has been criticism directed at Boris Johnson and the UK government regarding their handling of care homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Allegations included inadequate provision of personal protective equipment (PPE), delayed responses, and discharging hospital patients into care homes without proper testing, which potentially contributed to the virus's spread among vulnerable residents.

Still Here

Ingram 出版
2024/11/20 出版

Afghanistan is still here. After the "Fall of Kabul" there has been a call for strategic introspection in the US and its Allies, producing numerous 'War Commissions, 'Afghan War Evaluations, ' and other forms of "lessons learned" inquiries. While these lessons are vital for future Western or NATO engagements in fragile states, they treat Afghanistan as a concluded chapter. This anthology does not dwell on the past but explore the contemporary dilemmas confronting Afghanistan and the international community's role post-August 2021, with the perspective that this carries global implications. In an effort to address the shortage of analytical insights on Afghanistan, this anthology focuses on issues of security, economics, humanitarian situation, the human rights situation of women and girls, intelligence, international law and diplomacy towards Afghanistan, internal peace building processes, Taliban governance and state-building, as well as the regional dynamics. The topics have deliberately been chosen based on our aim of providing knowledge on different aspects of the society in combination with experts wanting to contribute, and we have engaged the leading international experts on Afghanistan to write about them.

Fundamentalist Terrorism

Ingram 出版
2024/11/20 出版

The attacks of 11 September 2001 were felt in many different fields and spheres, changing the way the world understood terrorism, its scope and dangerousness. States began to mobilise to confront an invisible enemy and debates were raised about its origins, mechanisms and foundations. Discussions about Muslim culture and its interconnection with religion as a possible means of facilitating this type of violence became frequent, both in academic circles and in common sense. It is therefore necessary to carefully analyse this phenomenon and what surrounds it, in order to gain a greater understanding of a recurring theme in the media and on countries' political agendas, as well as stimulating new perspectives on different cultures and possible means of resolving conflicts. The aim of this monograph would therefore be to set out some explanations and debates on the subject, define terms, follow the history of current terrorism and its consequences in a globalised world.

When We Sold God's Eye

Alex,Cuadros  著
Ingram 出版
2024/11/20 出版

A CALIFORNIA BOOK AWARDS NONFICTION FINALIST The "gripping and astonishing story" (Douglas Preston) of the Cinta Larga, a tribe that had no contact with the West until the 1960s and came to run an illegal diamond mine in the Amazon. Growing up in a remote corner of the world's largest rainforest, Pio, Maria, and Oita learned to hunt wild pigs and tapirs, and gathered Brazil nuts and a癟a穩 berries from centuries-old trees. The first highway pierced through in 1960. Ranchers, loggers, and prospectors invaded, and the kids lost their families to terrible new weapons and diseases. Pushed by the government to assimilate, they struggled to figure out their new, capitalist reality, discovering its wonders--cars, refrigerators, TV sets, phones--as well as a way to acquire them: by selling the natural riches of their own forest home. They had to partner with the white men who'd hunted them, but their wealth grew legendary, the envy of the nation--until decades of suppressed trauma erupted into a massacre, bloody retribution that made headlines across the globe. Based on six years of immersive reporting and research, When We Sold God's Eye tells a unique kind of adventure story, one that begins with a river journey by Theodore Roosevelt and ends with smugglers from New York City's Diamond District. It's a story of survival against all odds; of the temptations of wealth and the dream of prosperity; of an ecosystem threatened by our hunger for resources; of genocide and revenge. It's a tragedy as old as the first European encounters with Indigenous people, playing out in the present day. But most of all, it's the moving saga of a few audacious individuals--Pio, Maria, Oita, and their friends--and their attempts to adapt and even thrive in the most unlikely circumstances.

Fascism in the Middle East

Routledge 出版
2024/11/20 出版

Following decades of brutal campaigns against left forces, fascism in its nationalist and religious forms has been dominating Turkish, Iranian, and Arab politics for over half a century. At first, with key enemies vanquished, military generals assumed power and established some of the most terroristic totalitarian regimes in the 20th Century. It only followed that Islamist organizations then hijacked democratic movements of dissent. Now, in countries and territories where they have assumed state power, Islamist forces have surpassed all nationalist dictatorships for their utter disrespect of human lives.Today, Islamism subordinates peoples in the Middle East. Bearing the urgency of our times, Saladdin Bahozde problematizes all forms of fascist exclusionism in the region, while drawing attention to anti-fascist resistance and progressive alternatives there. As a critique of identitarianism and right-wing politics in the Middle East and North Africa, the work calls for a global movement, as endorsed by the peoples of the region, to go beyond nationalism and Islamism.

Nuclear Arms Control in Peril

Ingram 出版
2024/11/19 出版

In this book, a former US Department of State senior arms control official critically analyses two pivotal nuclear arms control treaties: the established Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and the rising Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). The book offers a concise and critical analysis of the two, illuminating both their strengths and shortcomings. The author acknowledges the idealistic goal of the TPNW but argues that its immediate abolitionist stance lacks a roadmap for achievement. Instead, the book advocates realistic progress within the NPT framework. It provides twelve key negotiation topics for fostering meaningful dialogue among nuclear-weapon states, while emphasizing the urgency of concrete action in a world facing growing nuclear threats.

The Spectre of Islamic Terrorism: Comparative Insights

Palgrave M 出版
2024/11/17 出版

This book presents the result of an innovative challenge, to create a systematic literature overview driven by machine-generated content. Questions and related keywords were prepared for the machine to query, discover, collate and structure by Artificial Intelligence (AI) clustering. The AI-based approach seemed especially suitable to provide an innovative perspective as the topics are indeed both complex, interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary, for example, climate, planetary and evolution sciences. Springer Nature has published much on these topics in its journals over the years, so the challenge was for the machine to identify the most relevant content and present it in a structured way that the reader would find useful. The automatically generated literature summaries in this book are intended as a springboard to further discoverability. They are particularly useful to readers with limited time, looking to learn more about the subject quickly and especially if they are new to the topics. Springer Nature seeks to support anyone who needs a fast and effective start in their content discovery journey, from the undergraduate student exploring interdisciplinary content, to Master- or PhD-thesis developing research questions, to the practitioner seeking support materials, this book can serve as an inspiration, to name a few examples. It is important to us as a publisher to make the advances in technology easily accessible to our authors and find new ways of AI-based author services that allow human-machine interaction to generate readable, usable, collated, research content.

The Empire of Civil Society

Verso 出版
2024/11/17 出版

The Empire of Civil Society mounts a compelling critique of the orthodox "realist" theory of international relations and provides a historical-materialist approach to the international system. Opening with an interrogation of a number of classic realist works, the book rejects outright the goal of theorizing geopolitical systems in isolation from wider social structures. In a series of case studies--including Classical Greece, Renaissance Italy and the Portuguese and Spanish empires--Justin Rosenberg shows how the historical-materialist analysis of societies is a surer guide to understanding geopolitical systems than the technical theories of realist international relations. In each case, he draws attention to the correspondence between the form of the geopolitical system and the character of the societies composing it. In the final section of the book, the tools forged in these explorations are employed to analyze the contemporary international system, with striking results. Rosenberg demonstrates that the distinctive properties of the sovereign-states system are best understood as corresponding to the social structures of capitalist society. In this light, realism emerges as incapable of explaining what it has always insisted is the central feature of the international system--namely, the balance of power. On the other hand, it is argued that Marx's social theory of value, conventionally regarded as an account of hierarchical class domination, provides the deepest understanding of the core international relations theme of "anarchy." Provocative and unconventional, The Empire of Civil Society brilliantly turns orthodox international relations on its head.

Under the Nuclear Shadow

Princeton 出版
2024/11/16 出版

How and why China has pursued information-age weapons to gain leverage against its adversaries How can states use military force to achieve their political aims without triggering a catastrophic nuclear war? Among the states facing this dilemma of fighting limited wars, only China has given information-age weapons such a prominent role. While other countries have preferred the traditional options of threatening to use nuclear weapons or fielding capabilities for decisive conventional military victories, China has instead chosen to rely on offensive cyber operations, counterspace capabilities, and precision conventional missiles to coerce its adversaries. In Under the Nuclear Shadow, Fiona Cunningham examines this distinctive aspect of China's post-Cold War deterrence strategy, developing an original theory of "strategic substitution." When crises with the United States highlighted the inadequacy of China's existing military capabilities, Cunningham argues, China pursued information-age weapons that promised to rapidly provide credible leverage against adversaries. Drawing on hundreds of original Chinese-language sources and interviews with security experts in China, Cunningham provides a rare and candid glimpse from Beijing into the information-age technologies that are reshaping how states gain leverage in the twenty-first century. She offers unprecedented insights into the trajectory of China's military modernization, as she details the strengths and weaknesses of China's strategic substitution approach. Under the Nuclear Shadow also looks ahead at the uncertain future of China's strategic substitution approach and briefly explores too how other states might seize upon the promise of emerging technologies to address weaknesses in their own military strategies.

Slaves Are Not Allowed Into Heaven

Ingram 出版
2024/11/16 出版

The bloodiest war of the 21st century began in 2014 with Russia's annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea and occupation of parts of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions of Ukraine. The author of the book took the beginning of this war very close to his heart because his native town was occupied by Russians. In 2017, he decided to join the fight against the invaders and went to the East of Ukraine, where he joined the Right Sector Volunteer Corps. There he met people who came to defend their Motherland not for awards but because of the call of their hearts. These people belong to different strata of the population of Ukraine and have different nationalities, views, genders and ages. But these people have one thing in common - boundless love for Ukraine. The author of the book is proud that he got to know them personally. Read about the heroes and look at them closely. This is the face of modern Ukraine. It is a pity that some of the heroes of this book are no longer with us, as bloodthirsty war took them away. However, their memory will live with us forever.

Insurgent Nations

Ingram 出版
2024/11/15 出版

Over two separate twelve-year periods, two opposing 'states' governed in parallel in Angola (1979-1991) and Sudan (1990-2002), each with competing conceptions of society, history and national identity. Deeply dividing communities with their counter-nationalist programmes, rebel parties UNITA in Angola and the SPLM/A in Sudan, which had fought Africa's longest and bloodiest civil wars, built political and military enterprises in opposition to the established governments. Insurgent Nations unpacks the complexities of these movements, exploring the charisma of their leaders, the ruthlessness of their military operations, their political manoeuvrings, and their multiple transformations in war and peace. Using first-hand, unpublished accounts from their leaders and cadres, Paula Cristina Roque provides unique insight into UNITA and the SPLM/A's governing strategies. She details the 'nations', 'states' and 'societies' that were forged by the parties' ideologies, sub-nationalist concerns and interactions with the population. While UNITA's political project in the Free Lands of Angola was centrally controlled and totalitarian, the SPLM/A's New Sudan was decentralised and minimalist, built from the bottom up. This is the first volume to compare the policies and perspectives of UNITA and the SPLM/A, offering a new understanding of territory-governing insurgencies. Ultimately, both rebel states were exercises in survival, resilience and adaptation.

The Hamas Intelligence War against Israel

Ingram 出版
2024/11/15 出版

Since its founding in 1987, the political and ideological dimensions of the terror organisation Hamas have been well discussed by scholars. In contrast, this innovative study takes a new approach by exploring the entire scope of Hamas's intelligence activity against its state adversary, Israel. Using primary sources in Arabic, Hebrew and English, Netanel Flamer analyzes the development of Hamas's various methods for gathering information, its use of this information for operational needs and strategic analysis, and its counterintelligence activity against the Israeli intelligence apparatus. The Hamas Intelligence War against Israel explores how Hamas's activity has gradually become more sophisticated as its institutions have become more established and the nature of the conflict has changed. As the first full-length study to analyze the intelligence efforts of a violent non-state actor, this book sheds new light on the activities and operations of Hamas, and opens new avenues for intelligence research in the wider field.

EU Foreign Policy in a Fragmenting International Order

Oriol,Costa  著
Palgrave M 出版
2024/11/15 出版

This open access book delves into the responses of EU actors, such as member states, institutions, and political groups in the European Parliament, to the fragmentation of the liberal international order (LIO). The analytical framework adopted in this volume explores the diverse interpretations of this phenomenon and the various political initiatives associated with them. Among these interpretations is the concept of strategic autonomy, which has emerged as a key feature of debates surrounding the EU's adaptation to a fragmented LIO. The contributors examine these dynamics across different issue areas and dimensions of EU foreign policy, encompassing the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), external relations, and the externalization of internal policies. They use the term fragmentation to refer to a bundle of processes affecting the LIO that range from challenges to the universality of human rights to the crisis of global governance instruments, from the bifurcation of tech to protectionist tendencies in trade policies.

Chinese and Russian Military Artificial Intelligence

Ingram 出版
2024/11/15 出版

This monograph examines the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in modern warfare and its integration into military frameworks to meet national objectives. Military AI developments and their alignment with national goals are clearly visible in the global competitions and conflicts. A case study analysis of China and Russia indicates employment of AI to target specific adversarial vulnerabilities with improved focus on operational mass and increased operational effectiveness. These developmental and deployment lessons provide appropriate 'Use Cases' for the Indian Army's military AI development. By analysing the AI strategies of Russia and China, the monograph offers relevant lessons for India, given almost similar challenges in terms of diverse populations, composite terrain, and strategic priorities. This paper underscores the importance of aligning AI development with national security goals to maintain strategic dominance and safeguard interests. The monograph concludes by emphasising that, as AI continues to reshape warfare, India must tailor its AI strategies to align with the broader National AI Mission, ensuring that its military capabilities are enhanced in a way that secures national interests and asserts influence in an increasingly complex global landscape.

This book offers a comprehensive collection of scholarly articles that delve into Nepal's internal and external political dynamics, as well as its broader regional context. It begins by exploring the root causes of Nepal's 10-year Maoist insurgency, analysing why the peace process remains stalled and what steps can be taken to resolve it. The role of Nepal's political parties and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) in achieving sustainable peace is another focus of the book. Furthermore, the book examines Nepal's strategic relationships with India, China, and Australia, shedding light on the country's geopolitical positioning amidst regional power struggles. The ongoing political crisis in Bangladesh is also analysed, focusing on the lessons it offers to other small states like Nepal in the region. In addition, the book discusses Nepal's approach to achieving its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and its foreign policy strategies as a small state navigating the complexities of international relations.

Resistance Through Higher Education

Ingram 出版
2024/11/14 出版

In February 2021, Myanmar experienced the third coup d'矇tat in its modern history. Unprecedented strength was displayed by Myanmar civil society as it fought back against these new authoritarian drives. Where did this strength come from? Fearing the loss of the benefits gained in the previous decade of reforms (2011-2021), students, teachers, professors, and activists fuelled the Spring Revolution. To understand what is happening in Myanmar, this book outlines the historical efforts by Myanmar universities to advocate for a more just society and offers unique insight into the long-lasting struggle of education against authoritarianism. By exploring Myanmar's social and political struggles through the lens of higher education resistance, the book offers a compelling narrative about the life of the country following the latest coup d'矇tat, an event that continues to puzzle the international community.

Victim-Centred Peacemaking

Roddy,Brett  著
Ingram 出版
2024/11/14 出版

Based on unique empirical research into Colombia's Santos-FARC-EP peace process (2012-2016), this book interrogates how, if at all, survivors and victims may assert agency and contribute to formal peacemaking and transitional justice initiatives. The book argues that victim inclusion meaningfully transformed victim-perpetrator relations and dynamics in Havana, while partially shaping the content of both the Victims' Agreement and Final Agreement. As such, the delegations created paths for empowerment at the individual and, in part, collective levels. However, victim inclusion also precipitated experiences of victim depoliticization, revictimization, retraumatization and instrumentalization. Drawing on insights from across academic disciplines, the book proposes an instrumentalization / empowerment spectrum to analyse the complex impact of victim-centred approaches to peacemaking/transitional justice, and is valuable for both researchers and practitioners.

Transafrica

Zed Books 出版
2024/11/14 出版

Transafrica explores this new lexical culture in cultural materials (novels, poetry, testimonies/life stories, interviews, film, visual art) in English, French, Arabic and other selected African languages, and the meanings which Africans have transnationally conferred upon "queer" and "transgender"-from North to South. Gender nonconformity and sexual dissidence on the African continent has produced a lexical culture at the crossroads of Western discourse and local African naming practices. Transafrica is an unprecedented attempt at identifying the new vocabularies which queer and transgender Africans have used in the first two decades of the 21st century to refer to themselves and narrativize their desire, in the face of official narratives by medical doctors, and legal and religious authorities that have often been prioritized over a gender-variant (queer, trans, non-binary) individual's lived experience, resulting in a systemic disempowerment. Using case studies from Morocco, Egypt, Somalia, Nigeria, Uganda, Madagascar, Botswana, South Africa and more, Transafrica draws conclusions for a culture-specific and history-specific type of gender diversity outside of Western epistemic borders while confronting Euro-American models, thereby auguring a turn-of-the-third-millennium postqueer set of African open-ended identities.

Southeast Asia’s Multipolar Future

Thomas,Parks  著
2024/11/13 出版

Southeast Asia is rapidly becoming a competitive space for geopolitical rivalries. The growth in China-U.S. strategic competition is creating deep anxiety among Southeast Asia leaders, China's rising power is felt across every corner of Southeast Asia, and many leaders are worried about the long-term implications of rising Chinese influence in the region. The United States' increasingly assertive approach towards China is welcomed by some governments, but the growth in tensions is creating deep anxiety about a possible new Cold War. How can the region prevent a repeat of the divisions and bitter rivalries of the previous Cold War? This book argues that Southeast Asia is emerging as an open, autonomous region, where small and middle powers can maintain their sovereignty and shape the regional order. Despite new superpower pressures, the region is moving towards a multi-polar order, with greater agency for Southeast Asian countries. The key to Southeast Asia's future may be other external powers - particularly Japan, Australia, India, and Europe - who can provide ASEAN governments with more diverse partnerships, enabling them to avoid the bipolar blocs of superpower rivalries. The book argues that external partners are helping to shape the geopolitical order by supporting ASEAN leadership and diluting the influence of great powers. Southeast Asian countries also have remarkable capacity to manage asymmetrical relations and balance external powers. The book describes the region's history of managing great power relations, drawing on historical and contemporary cases. By examining the dynamics between Southeast Asia and external powers, the book predicts that the region's future will look entirely different from its Cold War past.

The Non-Radicalisation of Muslims in Southern Europe

Palgrave M 出版
2024/11/13 出版

This open access book explains why southern European countries with significant Muslim communities have experienced few religiously inspired violent attacks - or have avoided the kind of securitised response to such attacks seen in many other Western states. The authors provide a unique contribution to the literature on violent extremism - which has traditionally focused on countries such as France, the US and the UK - by studying the causes of relatively low rates of radicalisation in Greece, Italy and Spain. The book explores many of the dynamics between (non) radicalisation and issues such as socioeconomic inequality, experiences of conflict, and systemic racism and other forms of discrimination. It establishes a new analytical framework for the development of, and resilience against, violent radicalisation in the region and beyond.

Decolonial Sweden

Routledge 出版
2024/11/13 出版

Decolonial Sweden exposes the social and political relevance of European colonialism to Sweden and its place in the world. It is a book that points to why and how Sweden is to be included in global decolonial struggles.Sweden is often displayed as an ethnoracially homogenous country without any colonial history: an open and tolerant human rights champion, anti-racist, anti-colonial, and in solidarity with the Global South. For over twenty years, authors Michael McEachrane and Louis Faye have been challenging this account, pointing to Sweden's involvement in colonial histories and legacies, its racialized nationhood, and embedded colonial structures. This important new book reflects a decolonial turn in research, emphasizing that coloniality is far from over, and that challenging global injustices remains an unfinished and open-ended process. Chapters in the book consider the resistance of the S獺mi people to Swedish colonialism, whether Sweden owes the Caribbean reparations for its colonization of Saint Barth矇lemy and involvement in the transatlantic trade, Sweden's involvement in a colonial global economy, and how white European identification is embedded in Swedish politics, nation-building, and society. Engaging and insightful, Decolonial Sweden invites readers to reconsider Swedish attitudes toward race, colonialism, and international relations. This book is an essential read for Post- and Decolonial scholars and students of Critical Race Studies, Critical Indigenous Studies, Africana Studies, International Relations, Global Development, and Political Science, as well as for anyone interested in Sweden's place in the world.

Diplomacy and Deterrence

Ingram 出版
2024/11/13 出版

The 21st century is no different from any of the previous periods with regard to wars and conflicts. With only two decades down the lane, several regions have seen wars of different character: limited and all-out conventional wars, sub-conventional wars, blockades, externally sponsored internal revolts, and threats of nuclear posturing. The situation is alarming and calls for a serious review of the prevalent international order because the present international system, under the cloud of realism, has failed to avert wars and conflicts between rival states. This book argues that wars and conflicts become inevitable between archrivals with protracted conflicts if both diplomacy and deterrence fail to achieve their objectives. Furthermore, it explores the essential links between diplomacy and deterrence as essential tools to avert future wars, particularly between unequal military powers (UMPs).
