Early Judaism and the New Testament
The relationship between Early Judaism and the New Testament is a major issue in biblical studies, one that has impacted Jewish-Christian relations for centuries. This impact has often been negative due to troubling misconceptions of both the New Testament and Jewish writings contemporaneous with it. Misunderstandings have arisen from inaccurate information, religious traditions, and anti-Semitism.Warren Carter and Ariel Feldman address and correct these misconceptions by engaging with the New Testament and major writings from Early Judaism, including the Apocrypha, Old Testament Pseudepigrapha, and the Dead Sea Scrolls, as well as Philo and Josephus. The authors emphasize various interactions among these traditions for the purpose of better interpreting the New Testament and, importantly, avoiding anti-Jewish bias. This is an ideal supplemental textbook for students of the New Testament as well as interested clergy and laity. The text is straightforward and readable, and unlike other books on the topic, it does not assume prior knowledge of Early Judaism or of New Testament engagement with it. Each chapter recognizes troubling misunderstandings that people often have about the interactions between Early Judaism and the New Testament and includes discussion prompts.
Taking Religion Seriously
"Millions are like me when it comes to religion: well-educated and successful people for whom religion has been irrelevant," Charles Murray writes. "For them, I think I have a story worth telling." Taking Religion Seriously is Murray's autobiographical account of the decades-long evolution in his stance toward the idea of God in general and Christianity in particular. He argues that religion is something that can be approached as an intellectual exercise. His account moves from the improbable physics of the Big Bang to recent discoveries about the nature of consciousness, from evolutionary psychology to hypotheses about a universal Moral Law. His exploration of Christianity delves into the authorship of the Gospels, the reliability of biblical texts, and the scholarship surrounding the resurrection story. Murray, the author of Coming Apart and coauthor of The Bell Curve, does not write as an expert. He acknowledges that those taking religion seriously for the first time, like himself, must grapple with topics and ideas that defy intellectual mastery. In this book, Murray offers his personal example of intellectual struggle toward religion. "Maybe God needs a way to reach overeducated agnostics and that's what I stumbled into," he writes. "It's a more arid process than divine revelation but it has been rewarding. And, if you're like me, it's the only game in town."

Forever Welcomed
A powerful antidote to a plague that divides. Our world loves power and status . . . wealth and beauty . . . the influencers. But God does not resemble us in giving special preference to those in elite roles or coveted positions. He is not influenced by the influencers. His love is impartial.Forever Welcomed, a six-week Bible study, traces the rich tapestry of God's impartial love throughout the Bible--a love grounded in His character, not our abilities or status. His boundless mercy is a radiant contrast to a world darkened by social, economic, cultural, racial, and political partiality.Intent on helping readers remove the shame and fear often associated with partiality, esteemed Bible teacher Oghosa Iyamu equips us with a trustworthy, thought-provoking, biblically based resource. More than just a study, this is an invitation to live with impartial love--to embrace and reflect God's vision and heart for life in His eternal kingdom, where all who come are forever welcomed.
A Post Tribulation Manifesto
A *spell* has been cast over the church making the emperor's new clothes seem to exist. At the same time Jesus' plain teachings about His coming and Paul's usage of those Scriptures have vanished from our Bibles. Because of this the saints are now vulnerable and spiritually unprepared to enter the time of the Tribulation. The startling conclusion of the book is that there are absolutely no verses of Scripture that declare a pre-tribulation rapture or even a mid-tribulation rapture. The church must prepare itself for a post-tribulation rapture. This book breaks the *spell*.

The Authority of the Septuagint
Does the Septuagint have authority for the church today?Numerous scholars have explored what the Septuagint is and its history and uses, but less scholarship has engaged with the ways it exercises authority within the Christian tradition. In the first multicontributor volume of its kind, biblical scholars Greg Lanier and Will Ross bring together experts from a variety of disciplines to explore the nature of the Septuagint's authority over the ages.Discover fresh insights from experts across disciplines--including Old Testament, New Testament, patristics, systematic theology, historical theology, and more--into whether and how the Septuagint holds authority for today's church. With clarity and depth, this helpful addition to Septuagint studies will expand the conversation of how Christians should understand the Septuagint both in the academy and in the church. This book seeks: To explore the "authority" question from multiple perspectives. To examine how the early church, Reformers, and systematic (Protestant and Catholic) theologians view the Septuagint. To disentangle the NT's frequent use of the Septuagint from its perceived status as authoritative or "canonical".Whether you're a scholar, theologian, pastor, or seminary student, The Authority of the Septuagint is an invitation to engage with the Septuagint, its history, and its significance for the church today.

The Commentarial Impulse
What is the origin of Christian commentary? In this insightful volume, David Lincicum argues that it is in the New Testament, and in Paul's writings in particular, that readers encounter the first stirrings of a Christian commentarial impulse--an impulse that comes to fruition in the second and third centuries with the birth of the first proper Christian commentarial literature. Surveying a wide range of Pauline writings, Lincicum illuminates the texts' relationship to an authoritative past and a demanding present. He shows how the need to preserve the power of the past, whether in scriptural precedent or apostolic memory, while also developing a contemporary vision characterized by eschatological urgency, led to a profound and creative process of appropriation whose effects are still felt today. Written for scholars interested in biblical interpretation, intertextuality, and history of reception, The Commentarial Impulse is an engaging collection that brings together the best of David Lincicum's insights into these subjects.

The Well That Washes What It Shows
An accessible introduction to the Bible that brings together theological insight with pastoral concerns In this distinctive introduction to the Bible, Jonathan Linebaugh illuminates Scripture's dual capacity for revealing human sinfulness and imparting divine love. Drawing on the language of the poet George Herbert, Linebaugh characterizes Scripture as "the well that washes what it shows"--that is, the living and active word that simultaneously reveals our need for Jesus and gives us Jesus. Linebaugh begins by outlining Scripture's overall story, subject matter, and shape. He then provides a broad overview of the Old and New Testaments, followed by a case study of the book of Romans that demonstrates how to bring together theological, historical, exegetical, and devotional concerns when studying Scripture. Whereas many introductions to the Bible prioritize one of these concerns at the expense of the others, Linebaugh shows readers how to synthesize them. In so doing, he demonstrates how reading the Bible can be both generative and regenerative: we attend to the gospel revealed in Scripture so that same gospel can be spoken afresh on the basis of Scripture. Grounded in Linebaugh's combined expertise as a theologian and experience as an ordained minister, The Well That Washes What It Shows is a valuable resource for pastors, seminary students, and anyone seeking to read Scripture in ways that engage both the mind and the heart.

Solid Truth for Slippery Times
Solid Truth for Slippery Times It's easy to be 'bewitched' by 'another gospel' if you don't know the True Gospel. The Galatians, like many people today, went along with what felt right in the moment rather than standing firm on truth, but the Apostle Paul was unwilling to leave them in their muddled thinking. In the midst of zealous deceivers, Paul reminds his reader then and now that at the heart of the True Gospel is the cross of Jesus Christ, that God has always saved His people by faith, and that in Christ God turns slaves into sons! Growing weary in slippery times? Solid truth is the antidote. In a world of mysticism, syncretism, and other false teaching, it's critical to know truth for yourself so you can discern the influence of 'other gospels' and live in the power and freedom of the True Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Jerome's Sources in His Translation of the Hebrew Bible
At the close of the fourth century CE, Jerome of Stridon-renowned Latin scholar, theologian, and priest-undertook the monumental task of translating the Hebrew-Aramaic Bible into Latin. The result of this effort, now known as the Vulgate, has long been regarded as a foundational text of Western Christianity. In this volume, Paul Rodrigue investigates the sources that Jerome may have drawn upon in the process of translation.Far from being just a rendering of the Hebrew-Aramaic Bible, the Vulgate emerges as a layered and multifaceted translation, shaped not only by the Hebrew-Aramaic text but also by a broad array of additional sources. Through a series of carefully chosen case studies, Rodrigue analyses a number of verses from the Joseph narrative in Genesis, as well as from Daniel and Esther. Each Vulgate passage is meticulously compared with its equivalents in the Hebrew-Aramaic Bible, the Septuagint, the Latin translations of the Septuagint, the Greek versions of Aquila, Symmachus, and Theodotion, and-where applicable-the Targumim and rabbinic writings. This comparative approach reveals Jerome's engagement with texts in four languages-Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, and Latin-and highlights his responses to both Jewish and Christian exegetical traditions. Importantly, the selected translations span Jerome's career as a translator of the Hebrew-Aramaic Bible: Daniel at its outset (392-393), Genesis mid-career (late 390s), and Esther at its close (404-405). As such, Rodrigue's analysis offers a chronologically nuanced study of Jerome's evolving translation method (sensus de sensu), providing invaluable insight for scholars of biblical studies, late antiquity, translation theory, and the transmission of sacred texts.
Simon of Samaria and the Simonians
Who were the Simonians? Beginning in the mid-second century CE, heresiologists depicted them as licentious followers of the first "gnostic," a supposedly Samarian self-deifier called Simon, who was thought to practice "magic" and became known as the father of all heresies. Litwa examines the Simonians in their own literature and in the literature used to refute and describe them. He begins with Simonian primary sources, namely The Declaration of Great Power (embedded in the anonymous Refutation of All Heresies) and The Concept of Our Great Power (Nag Hammadi codex VI,4). Litwa argues that both are early second-century products of Simonian authors writing in Alexandria or Egypt. Litwa then moves on to examine the heresiological sources related to the Simonians (Justin, the book of Acts, Irenaeus, the author of the Refutation of All Heresies, Pseudo-Tertullian, Epiphanius, and Filaster). He shows how closely connected Justin's report is to the portrait of Simon in Acts, and offers an extensive exegesis and analysis of Simonian theology and practice based on the reports of Irenaeus and the Refutator. Finally, Litwa examines Simonianism in novelistic sources, namely the Acts of Peter and the Pseudo-Clementines. By the time these sources were written, Simon had become the father of all heresies. Accordingly, virtually any heresy could be attributed to Simon. As a result-despite their alluring portraits of Simon-these sources are mostly unusable for the historical study of the Simonian Christian movement. Litwa concludes with a historical profile of the Simonian movement in the second and third centuries. The book features appendices which contain Litwa's own translations of primary Simonian texts.
Hermeneutics, Linguistics, and the Bible
The volume presents Stanley E. Porter's considered thoughts and reflections on key questions of meaning and context, addressing the problems of biblical interpretation and how a close collaboration between hermeneutics and linguistics can help to solve them. The chapters display Porter's work in both fields, examining how hermeneutics functions as a field in modern biblical studies, and how the quest for meaning in biblical texts is underpinned by the study of linguistics. The volume focuses on context for understanding the meanings of biblical texts. Porter suggests that linguists can learn more from the philosophical questions around meaning that hermeneutics apply in their study of biblical texts, and that there is more fruitful work to be done in the field of hermeneutics using insights from linguistics.
Unity in the Book of Isaiah
Building on previous holistic readings of the Book of Isaiah, this collection approaches Isaiah through the concept of unity. Contributors outline research that point to new directions in the unity movement and, in the process, bring it under a critical gaze, considering the perennial challenges to unity reading and thus problematizing the very concept of unity. Divided into four parts, the book provides methodological reflections on reading Isaiah as a unity, and examines historical and redactional readings, literary readings and contextual or reader-orientated readings. Topics include how the figure of Jacob functions as a unifying motif in the final form of the book, Isaiah 1 as an example of the relevance of local structure for global coherence and how woman as a root metaphor of Zion not only bears revelatory significance but also serves as a theological linchpin for a more holistic reading of the book. Overall, the book highlights the continued promise of holistic readings for diverse methods and varied approaches to the Book of Isaiah.
Inaugurated Resurrection in Earliest Christianity
Daniel W. Hayter explores the concept of 'inaugurated resurrection' within earliest Christianity; the view that believers have experienced a present resurrection with Christ, in advance of their final resurrection at his return. He argues that belief in inaugurated resurrection is already discernible in Paul's own writings, in large part due to the influence of Scripture, suggesting that the influence of Ezekiel 36-37 on Paul's understanding of the gift of the Spirit helps to explain this belief: Paul saw inaugurated resurrection as a way of speaking of receiving the Spirit. Hayter thus examines the reception of Ezekiel 36-37 in Second Temple Jewish literature, in order to situate Paul's own understanding of these chapters in the wider Jewish context, and follows with an extensive exploration of Ezekiel 36-37 in Paul's own writings. He argues that Paul understood Ezekiel's vision of the resurrection of dry bones to have been fulfilled in the present in the gift of God's Spirit to those in Christ, that Paul's understanding of Ezekiel is then brought to bear on a close exegesis of Romans 6.1-14, and that Paul's view of the Spirit in light of Ezekiel 36-37 helps to explain the strong connection between inaugurated resurrection and baptism.Hayter concludes that, far from being non-bodily, inaugurated resurrection, by baptism in one Spirit, implies incorporation into the resurrected body of Christ.
Imag(in)ing Jesus in the Universal or Particular
This volume is a critical exploration of cross-cultural Bible film reception presented through an analysis of the responses of UK and South African audiences to The Lumo Project: The Gospel of Mark (2014) and Son of Man (2006). Victoria Olaide Omotoso places emphasis on audience reception and highlighting the non-Western experience of biblical films by examining the responses of audiences from different cultural contexts to identical media, with a cross-cultural audience discourse facilitated by cultural dynamics: fidelity to the (biblical) text, ethnicity, music, and gender. By examining historic and cinematic debates, audience responses and filmmaker responses, Omotoso explores the ethnicity of Jesus, theological contexts and implications, and the presentation of Jesus in an androcentric world. Omotoso adopts the concepts of universality and particularity as frameworks to determine the ways through which the filmmakers attempt to identify their cinematic visions and locations. She defines universality as a phenomenon through which the filmmaker seeks to place the narrative within a trans-cultural frame for a global audience; in contrast, her definition of particularity is envisioning a unitary and specific cultural context for the narrative. By exploring fidelity to the text, the ethnic identity of Jesus, musical contexts, masculinity and female agency, the universal and particular are shown as complex, contested, and shifting concepts within the process of cross-cultural audience reception, which frequently destabilizes the intentions of the filmmakers.

Peace
"Living in the peace of God is something I must learn to walk out as I go along. It has been vital for me to remember that God's peace cost Him: it is not cheap. Jesus died a cruel death on the cross to secure our peace with God and our ability to relax in the peace of God.This book was written with you in mind, and it would be our privilege to lift you in prayer. We also know that God's Word does not return void; therefore, we believe this book will bless countless people. We look forward to hearing how our readers were able to connect, be challenged, and maybe change as a result of this book."-from the Foreword by Melissa Blanchard

Modern Callings; Listen When God Calls
The inspiration for this book comes from the Lord as a calling. It is my belief that we are put on this earth for the purpose of worshiping the Lord, and that the Lord does not rule our lives, but, rather allows us to make our own decisions about whether we will believe in God, about whether we will believe in Jesus, how we will treat others, etc. I just don't believe that he intervenes in most cases. In some cases however, when the Lord calls someone, it is an offer that one cannot refuse, and sometimes it is a person being called that most righteous people would not expect to be called. The Lord uses us to serve his purposes sometimes, and not just leads us to do so, but, sometimes forces us to do so. I like to think about some of the people he has used. Moses for instance was raised by the pharaoh's family and was not prone to doing the job he did. Noah. Jonas. We can go on. More often than not though, the people who are called upon are not, and never will be famous. We are given a job to do, and it may be very small, but, it is our job. One of my favorite hymns is Go Tell it on the Mountain. I like the part where He made me a watchman upon the city wall, and if I am a Christian, I am the least of all. I have always been a Christian, but, I have always been a sinner too, and when I think about it, I often wonder why the Lord would have chosen me to accomplish his goal that I was assigned. And since have been assigned more. This writing is an assignment I have been putting off for a few years, but, I have had some serious warnings to get on the ball.

The It Factor
The "It" Factor - Keeping It Real is a living, comprehensive study of TRUTH concerning the original design for a healthy relationship. The reader takes a seat at a vacant peephole in the fence around their life and gets a glimpse of "it" - the BIGGER picture. In the beginning, they see God's involvement in the creation and the everyday lives of Adam and Eve. They then journey into the adventure of life, as the first couple knew it. Then, from the seat of eons later, the reader cries out to the couple to resist the hissing creature's enticement to turn from TRUTH. Sadly, they ignore our pleas, and angry Adam and Eve end up living out a dysfunctional relationship in a cursed land. We, their seed, slaves to dysfunction, were born into a land at war with us. Life happens - relationships are broken, finances fail, and storms (physical and spiritual) come - and we struggle with loving ourselves, loving others, and (sometimes) loving God. This book offers a rare glimpse into the often unspoken areas of life, the raw realities where one has the choice (much like the first couple) of becoming bitter or better.Truth always has at least three perspectives. When we can align ourselves with "it" (God's perspective on truth) it enables us to live as He originally intended - wide, open, and free! Find your seat at the peephole in the fence and watch as Bobette Stubblefield masterfully takes the difficult topics of life's grievances, heartaches, anger, and hurt and encourages us to roll up our sleeves and get real.

The "It" Factor
The "It" Factor - Keeping It Real is a living, comprehensive study of truth and the original design for healthy relationships. From the very first pages, readers are invited to take their place at a vacant peephole in the fence surrounding their lives and glimpse the bigger picture that so often goes unseen. In the beginning, we witness God's personal involvement in the creation and daily lives of Adam and Eve. We journey alongside them as they experience the wonder of an unbroken relationship-until that fateful moment when they give in to the hissing creature's deception. From our vantage point centuries later, we long to shout warnings, to plead with them not to turn away from truth. But they ignore the call, and Adam and Eve step into dysfunction and heartbreak, forever changing the course of human experience.Born into that same legacy, we, their descendants, inherit a world at war with us. Relationships fracture, finances fail, storms-both physical and spiritual-pummel us. We wrestle with self-worth, struggle to forgive, and sometimes question our love for God. This book offers an unflinching look at the raw realities most people rarely voice. With compassion and candor, Bobette Stubblefield-Martin shows how, like the first couple, we each face a choice: to become bitter or better.Truth, she reminds us, always has at least three perspectives. When we align our lives with "it"-God's perspective-we discover the freedom and authenticity we were created to enjoy. Chapter by chapter, Bobette masterfully peels back the layers of myth and tradition to reveal the deeper truths beneath life's grievances, heartaches, and disappointments.Dedicated to everyone who has ever struggled to love themselves, love others, or love God, The "It" Factor is a compassionate guide to healing and hope. Roll up your sleeves, take your seat at the peephole, and get ready to keep it real.
