The Hypothesis of the Gospels
The gospels were not the only books in antiquity to retell the same story. Ancient readers had their own language for describing works that retread the same narrative ground. Different versions of a story were imagined as sharing a narrative core, called a hypothesis. Early Christian readers adopted this conceptual model in order to describe gospel literature, legitimize its pluriformity, and limit its diversity. Even before the term hypothesis appeared explicitly, however, readers imagined gospels in roughly the same way. Christians did not radically reimagine the literary character of gospels at the end of the second century, when hypothesis language first appeared. Rather, the components of this model are already present in the earliest evidence for the reception of gospels. The standard model for thinking about pluriform narrative traditions in Hellenistic literary culture shaped the production and interpretation of gospel literature from the very beginning.

Conceptions of Cyclicity in Babylonian and Greco-Roman Scholarship
What did ancient Mesopotamian, Greek, and Roman scholars know about the cyclicity of astronomical phenomena, how did they conceptualize cyclicity, and which other phenomena did they consider to be cyclical? This study explores astronomical, astrological, and other scholarly sources, including previously ignored ones, in order to answer these questions. Particular attention is paid to the role of planetary cycles and questions of cross-cultural knowledge transfer. A new account is given of how knowledge of cyclicity, its conceptualization, and its use in predictive practices developed in Babylonia and the Greco-Roman world from the first millennium BCE until Late Antiquity. It is argued that the predictive turn in Babylonian astronomy and astrology led to a new understanding of how astronomical and earthly phenomena are interconnected through time and space. The emergence of horoscopic astrology led to the question of whether human existence is determined by cycles. Even the universe as a whole is governed by cycles according to Plato and later Greco-Roman scholars.

A Basic Guide to Biblical Theology
Serious students of the Bible quickly discover the diversity that stems from the human origins of Scripture, such as different authors writing in different times, places, genres, and languages. Written by an expert in biblical theology, this short, accessible book helps readers understand the unity that springs from the divine authorship of Scripture and how the whole Bible fits together. Alan Thompson enables readers to see the big picture of the Bible by unpacking nine key themes that unite the Testaments and hold the Bible together: creation, covenant, the exodus, law and wisdom, sacrifice, kingship, the prophetic hope, the kingdom of God, and the final holy city. A Basic Guide to Biblical Theology helps readers read the Old Testament in light of the New Testament and the New Testament in light of the Old Testament. This book provides an introductory framework for the big themes of biblical theology, preparing readers for a lifetime of Bible study. It will appeal to anyone who wants to understand how the Bible fits together, including students, pastors, church leaders, and laypeople.
The Art of Narrative Analogy
In The Art of Narrative Analogy, Seth Postell offers a literary approach for understanding the relationship between the two Testaments, and between various biblical narratives, that is more sensitive to the verbal meaning of the Old Testament than popular typological approaches. He argues that narrative analogy--the deliberate paralleling of characters, events, and themes across biblical texts--provides a more exegetically responsible and theologically fruitful method for understanding the Bible's unity and depth.Drawing on extensive examples from the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, Postell reveals how scriptural authors employ parallels to illuminate theological truths and deepen narrative coherence. From the connections between Rahab and Lot to the analogies between Jonah and the calming of the storm in Mark's Gospel, he shows how these parallels invite readers into the Bible's grand theological narrative. Postell also integrates illustrations from modern storytelling, such as Star Wars, to demonstrate how analogy shapes meaning in both ancient and contemporary contexts.Postell offers clear criteria for identifying narrative analogies, and practical guidance for interpreting them, making this volume an indispensable resource for students, pastors, and church leaders.
Resilient Hearts
"Josh Langer lays his pain and trials bare on the pages of this book for all to see..."Steve Roquemore - Mentoring AllianceWhat if the struggles you're facing aren't breaking you but building you? Step into a journey of resilience, trust, and perspective shifts that will change the way you see God, yourself, and the challenges in front of you! This book is a deep, raw, and hopeful exploration of resilience, trust in God, and perspective in the face of life's trials. Through stories of personal struggle, leadership challenges, and lessons learned in missions, ministry, and fatherhood, the book explores themes of anchoring identity in Christ, the power of teachability, the impact of encouragement, the importance of rest, and developing the endurance to navigate life's storms. It emphasizes tactical patience-waiting on God's timing before assigning meaning to events-and the power of shifting perspectives to see God's hand at work even in chaos.
A Biblical Faith
There is a growing gulf between what the Bible teaches and the church's current beliefs and practices. As a consequence, this book is an attempt to respond to an institution-the church-that, in many ways, has lost its way. (And that is reflected in the common belief that the church is little more than a not-for-profit welfare organisation with some religious mumbo-jumbo added in for those who need it.) It's not perfect-more of a work in progress-but it is an attempt to address a situation where the Gospel is being corrupted; that is, added to, taken away from, and even lost altogether. But be warned: this manual is intended to be a vehicle of change and, by its nature, many people will find aspects of its content very challenging.

They were delivered mainly in women's mission societies in a small-town church during the second half of the twentieth century. Besides offering practical spiritual enrichment, they also provide insights into social life in a previous age and are thus of historical interest.

Also, in this catechism is expounded in a precious way, how the Lord converts a person and that there is nothing included from man's side, for there is only one God, with whom we must be reconciled; there is only one Mediator, by which we can be reconciled to God and in Whom the triune God is eternally glorified, of Whom the poet says: Through Him, through Him alone, Whose presence goes before us, We'll wear the victors crown, no more by foes assaulted, We'll triumph through our King, by Israel's God exalted.

Living the Sermon on the Mount in Difficult Times
Living the Sermon on the Mount in difficult times is part of what it means to follow Jesus, the Peaceful One. Jesus not only taught it, he lived it. This introduction, for all kinds of Christians, examines the revolutionary content of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount in the context of the brutal Roman empire. Then it surveys stories of those who struggled to faithfully live this Scripture in the messiness of their own difficult times. What does this history look like from perspective of the cross? Violence served Roman, European and American empires well, but crucified their victims. This text seeks to feminize and decolonize the debate as to whether the Sermon on the Mount is relevant today, then ask how relevant the just war tradition and Christian realism are for addressing the big human security questions of the twenty-first century: climate change, poverty, mass migration, racism, populism, and nuclear weapons. Learning from the past, can we begin to develop a new, robust Christian realism, that takes seriously the Sermon on the Mount and finds in it a way of salvation for our own difficult, poly-crisis times? This book can be read individually and also as a group study.

Septuagint - Cosmic Genesis
In the mid 3rd century BC, King Ptolemy II Philadelphus of Egypt ordered a translation of the ancient Israelite scriptures for the Library of Alexandria, which resulted in the creation of the Septuagint. The original version, published circa 250 BC, only included the Torah, or in Greek terms, the Pentateuch. The Torah is composed of the five books traditionally credited to Moses, circa 1500 BC: Cosmic Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. The first of these five books was known as Cosmic Genesis in Greek, however, known as Beresh穩t in Hebrew, which translates as approximately 'In the beginning' the first few words of the book. The Book of Cosmic Genesis begins by recounting a fusion of ancient Akkadian and Middle Egyptian creation mythology, before telling the stories of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the ancestors of the Israelites. Their stories also include smatterings of Old and Middle Egyptian religious iconography, such as Jacob seeing the ladder up to the sky, which in Egyptian mythology was associated with Osiris since the Old Kingdom era.The book culminates with the Israelites, the descendants of Jacob, all moving to Egypt during a famine in Canaan. Based on the chronology in the Septuagint, his famine would have been during the collapse of the Egyptian Middle Kingdom, which led to a group of Canaanites seizing control of Egypt, as described a the end of Cosmic Genesis.
A Linguistic Model to Analyze New Testament Greek
The study presents a model/teaching tool for a comprehensive step-by-step linguistic analysis of passages of the Greek New Testament. The book illustrates the method with a thorough analysis of all words in six passages covering chapter one of the Gospel of Mark: kind of word, full grammatical identification, possible syntactical functions, semantic meanings, and linguistic comments. The repeated steps of analysis suggest an order in which such a process can work best. The process also provides word fields, structural dynamics, and parallel patterns. The approach seeks to fill the gap between the plain Greek text as it stands before us and the work of interpretation. Students, teachers, and scholars will find this to be a foundational work for analyzing the Greek New Testament.

The Baal Book
Ancient Near Eastern texts such as The Baal Cycle portray the pagan god Baal as a rebel-the hero of a revolution, worshiped and glorified for his long string of victories. In The Baal Book: A Biography of the Devil, Fr. Stephen De Young shows that the Hebrew Scriptures consciously turn the Baal story on its head, depicting him as a failed and defeated rebel who nonetheless tries to steal the glory that belongs to Almighty God. From these Scriptures, the figure of the Devil emerged within Jewish and Christian Tradition. Father De Young works through the Old and New Testament passages that refer to various Baal stories, and he surveys Baal worship through followers' beliefs, religious practices, and liturgical life. In these pages, we will see that the figures of Baal and the Devil-the prince of demons-are one and the same.
Redeeming Eden
Redeeming Eden stands out by highlighting the often overlooked but significant role of women in shaping redemptive history. It weaves together a cohesive narrative that demonstrates how women, despite being frequently undervalued in Ancient Near Eastern cultures, courageously initiate and advance key movements in Scripture. From Eve, who anticipates God's redemption, to Tamar, whose boldness transforms Judah, Rahab, who saves the two spies, and many others, each chapter builds upon the next to reveal a comprehensive storyline. These women, driven by righteousness and justice, take risks and make a lasting impact without seeking recognition or acclaim.Far from being a mere collection of stories, this book presents a compelling argument for women in ministry by simply telling the interwoven stories of intrepid women in Scripture. It challenges common misconceptions and brings these women to life within their cultural and canonical contexts, using linguistic, literary, and archaeological evidence. Through careful analysis and a readable style, it aims to correct mistaken vilification and provide a fresh perspective that is accessible to non-academic, without excluding academic, readers.Redeeming Eden not only sheds light on the inspiring stories of these women but also underscores God's attention to their courage and faithfulness. They are a testament to the preservation of life and the ultimate fulfillment of God's plan through the line of the Messiah. With relatively short chapters and a storytelling approach, Redeeming Eden offers an engaging and impactful reading experience. It is our hope that readers will be inspired by the stories of these remarkable women and gain a deeper appreciation for their significant contributions to the narrative of Scripture. This book has everything you need for a full personal or group study experience.Redeeming Eden is designed for either personal study or classroom use, and it will also be an accessible resource for small groups and adult education in churches. Chapters end with reflection questions and guidance for spiritual formation. An individual access code to stream all video sessions online. (You don't need to buy a DVD!)

Romans Bible Study
Christians in the first century lived in a world ruled by Rome. The vast size of the Roman Empire meant that it incorporated many different people groups who followed many different religions. Christians were thus often confronted with practices mandated by the local authorities where they lived that went against their faith in Jesus. But even more problematic, they were also often confronted with worldviews and systems of belief that went against their faith. This was especially true of the believers who lived in the capital city of Rome. So it was that when Paul decided to visit the city, he first sent them a letter outlining the key principles and "doctrines" of the Christian faith. Paul explained what humans are really like (sinful), what God has done to provide an escape from the consequences of humanity's sin, and what a lifestyle that goes out of a Christian worldview looks like. Today, we need to know the same! We need to have a deep understanding of what we believe so we know how to respond when faced with other beliefs that go against Christ. Each study in the NIV Application Commentary Resources series employs a three-step process to help you understand both the historical meaning of a biblical text and its relevance in modern times. The original meaning section reveals the questions and concerns the author was addressing. The past to present section then explains what significance the original audience would have found in the passage and what significance you can find in it today. Finally, the questions that accompany each section will help you specifically apply the author's words and teachings and find meaning in them for what you are facing in your life.Lessons: The Gospel of Righteousness by Faith (Romans 1-32; 3:21-26)Addicted to Sin (Romans 2:1-3:20)The Righteousness of God (Romans 3:21-4:25)Peace and Hope (Romans 5:1-21)Freedom from Sin (Romans 6:1-23)Freedom from the Law (Romans 7:1-25)Life in the Spirit (Romans 8:1-39)The Problem of Israel (Romans 9:1-10:21)Israel's Future (Romans 11:1-36)The Transformed Life (Romans 12:1-21)Love and Law (Romans 13:1-14)Life Together (Romans 14:1-16:27)

Is The Bible Worth Reading, And Other Essays
Is the Bible worth reading? L. K. Washburn dares you to ask and to think deeply about the answer. This provocative essay collection confronts the sacred texts with clear-eyed philosophical essays and brisk, humane skepticism. Drawing on historical religious critique, Washburn s religious criticism ranges from close Bible interpretation and critical Bible analysis to broader secular perspectives on Bible and faith. These thought-provoking religious essays challenge assumptions, explore the Bible s moral and cultural authority, and offer accessible reflections for readers who seek honest appraisal over pious certainty. First published decades ago and long out of print, this important work is now republished by Alpha Editions and carefully restored for today s and future generations. More than a reprint, this edition is a collector s item and cultural treasure ideal for casual readers curious about religious skepticism and for classic literature collectors building a thoughtful library of historical inquiry. Inside you ll find an essay collection on religion that balances rigorous thought with readable prose: historical context, philosophical probing, and candid evaluations of scripture that invite discussion rather than dictate conclusions. Whether you re researching Bible essays and Bible interpretation, examining secular perspectives on Bible, or simply seeking stimulating religious criticism, Washburn s voice remains timely and stirring. Rediscover a neglected classic that continues to provoke, educate, and inspire.

Rosner explores the key theology and themes of Romans, including sin, righteousness, justification, judgment, union with Christ, Christian conduct, hope, and more. A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament (Ubs6)
This all-new edition of A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament uses the Greek text of the 29th edition of the Nestle-Aland Novum Testamentum Graece (NA29) and the 6th edition of the United Bible Societies' Greek New Testament (UBS6) and comments on all apparatus entries of UBS6 in concise and comprehensible language. The edition is also suitable for use with the Nestle-Aland, as the Nestle-Aland also contains all the apparatus entries of UBS6 (with a different selection of witnesses). In addition, a detailed introduction provides key information on New Testament textual tradition, basic principles of textual criticism, and guidelines for using the UBS Greek New Testament. The author is a member of the editorial committee for NA29 and UBS6 and is therefore ideally suited to explain the decisions made by the committee in its preparation of these critical editions. The 2025 version replaces Bruce M. Metzger's A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament, which has been regarded as the standard work for decades but is now outdated in terms of research history.
