Inaugurated Resurrection in Earliest Christianity
Daniel W. Hayter explores the concept of 'inaugurated resurrection' within earliest Christianity; the view that believers have experienced a present resurrection with Christ, in advance of their final resurrection at his return. He argues that belief in inaugurated resurrection is already discernible in Paul's own writings, in large part due to the influence of Scripture, suggesting that the influence of Ezekiel 36-37 on Paul's understanding of the gift of the Spirit helps to explain this belief: Paul saw inaugurated resurrection as a way of speaking of receiving the Spirit. Hayter thus examines the reception of Ezekiel 36-37 in Second Temple Jewish literature, in order to situate Paul's own understanding of these chapters in the wider Jewish context, and follows with an extensive exploration of Ezekiel 36-37 in Paul's own writings. He argues that Paul understood Ezekiel's vision of the resurrection of dry bones to have been fulfilled in the present in the gift of God's Spirit to those in Christ, that Paul's understanding of Ezekiel is then brought to bear on a close exegesis of Romans 6.1-14, and that Paul's view of the Spirit in light of Ezekiel 36-37 helps to explain the strong connection between inaugurated resurrection and baptism.Hayter concludes that, far from being non-bodily, inaugurated resurrection, by baptism in one Spirit, implies incorporation into the resurrected body of Christ.

This volume is a critical exploration of cross-cultural Bible film reception presented through an analysis of the responses of UK and South African audiences to The Lumo Project: The Gospel of Mark (2014) and Son of Man (2006). Victoria Olaide Omotoso places emphasis on audience reception and highlighting the non-Western experience of biblical films by examining the responses of audiences from different cultural contexts to identical media, with a cross-cultural audience discourse facilitated by cultural dynamics: fidelity to the (biblical) text, ethnicity, music, and gender. By examining historic and cinematic debates, audience responses and filmmaker responses, Omotoso explores the ethnicity of Jesus, theological contexts and implications, and the presentation of Jesus in an androcentric world. Omotoso adopts the concepts of universality and particularity as frameworks to determine the ways through which the filmmakers attempt to identify their cinematic visions and locations. She defines universality as a phenomenon through which the filmmaker seeks to place the narrative within a trans-cultural frame for a global audience; in contrast, her definition of particularity is envisioning a unitary and specific cultural context for the narrative. By exploring fidelity to the text, the ethnic identity of Jesus, musical contexts, masculinity and female agency, the universal and particular are shown as complex, contested, and shifting concepts within the process of cross-cultural audience reception, which frequently destabilizes the intentions of the filmmakers.
Simon of Samaria and the Simonians
Who were the Simonians? Beginning in the mid-second century CE, heresiologists depicted them as licentious followers of the first "gnostic," a supposedly Samarian self-deifier called Simon, who was thought to practice "magic" and became known as the father of all heresies. Litwa examines the Simonians in their own literature and in the literature used to refute and describe them. He begins with Simonian primary sources, namely The Declaration of Great Power (embedded in the anonymous Refutation of All Heresies) and The Concept of Our Great Power (Nag Hammadi codex VI,4). Litwa argues that both are early second-century products of Simonian authors writing in Alexandria or Egypt. Litwa then moves on to examine the heresiological sources related to the Simonians (Justin, the book of Acts, Irenaeus, the author of the Refutation of All Heresies, Pseudo-Tertullian, Epiphanius, and Filaster). He shows how closely connected Justin's report is to the portrait of Simon in Acts, and offers an extensive exegesis and analysis of Simonian theology and practice based on the reports of Irenaeus and the Refutator. Finally, Litwa examines Simonianism in novelistic sources, namely the Acts of Peter and the Pseudo-Clementines. By the time these sources were written, Simon had become the father of all heresies. Accordingly, virtually any heresy could be attributed to Simon. As a result-despite their alluring portraits of Simon-these sources are mostly unusable for the historical study of the Simonian Christian movement. Litwa concludes with a historical profile of the Simonian movement in the second and third centuries. The book features appendices which contain Litwa's own translations of primary Simonian texts.

At the close of the fourth century CE, Jerome of Stridon-renowned Latin scholar, theologian, and priest-undertook the monumental task of translating the Hebrew-Aramaic Bible into Latin. The result of this effort, now known as the Vulgate, has long been regarded as a foundational text of Western Christianity. In this volume, Paul Rodrigue investigates the sources that Jerome may have drawn upon in the process of translation.Far from being just a rendering of the Hebrew-Aramaic Bible, the Vulgate emerges as a layered and multifaceted translation, shaped not only by the Hebrew-Aramaic text but also by a broad array of additional sources. Modern Callings; Listen When God Calls
The inspiration for this book comes from the Lord as a calling. It is my belief that we are put on this earth for the purpose of worshiping the Lord, and that the Lord does not rule our lives, but, rather allows us to make our own decisions about whether we will believe in God, about whether we will believe in Jesus, how we will treat others, etc. I just don't believe that he intervenes in most cases. In some cases however, when the Lord calls someone, it is an offer that one cannot refuse, and sometimes it is a person being called that most righteous people would not expect to be called. The Lord uses us to serve his purposes sometimes, and not just leads us to do so, but, sometimes forces us to do so. I like to think about some of the people he has used. At the close of the fourth century CE, Jerome of Stridon-renowned Latin scholar, theologian, and priest-undertook the monumental task of translating the Hebrew-Aramaic Bible into Latin. The result of this effort, now known as the Vulgate, has long been regarded as a foundational text of Western Christianity. In this volume, Paul Rodrigue investigates the sources that Jerome may have drawn upon in the process of translation.Far from being just a rendering of the Hebrew-Aramaic Bible, the Vulgate emerges as a layered and multifaceted translation, shaped not only by the Hebrew-Aramaic text but also by a broad array of additional sources. The inspiration for this book comes from the Lord as a calling. It is my belief that we are put on this earth for the purpose of worshiping the Lord, and that the Lord does not rule our lives, but, rather allows us to make our own decisions about whether we will believe in God, about whether we will believe in Jesus, how we will treat others, etc. I just don't believe that he intervenes in most cases.
