We are more than six years into a war allegedly perpetrated by radical Islamic fundamentalists. Our elected leaders have told us that these Muslim terrorists constitute only a small percentage of the Islamic population and that Islam is a religion of peace. What if they are wrong? What if Osama bin Laden is right, and Islam is inherently violent and intolerant? In this paper, I will show how the Islamic texts of the Koran and Hadith1 and the example of the Muslim Prophet Muhammad actually directs Muslims to spread Islam by any means necessary; to include the forced conversion, subjugation and murder of non-believers. While there are sections of these religious texts that advocate tolerance and peaceful existence, I will explain how the Islamic principle of abrogation renders them obsolete. In short, I will show why Osama bin Laden's interpretation of Islam is right and discuss what this means for our future. There is a lot more bloodshed to come where Muslims interact with non-Muslims unless the moderate Muslims are able to redefine the fundamental ideology of their faith and completely discount the violent verses of the Koran and the Hadith. All Muslims must accept the worldview that all people are entitled to religious freedom, the premise that Islam must peacefully coexist with other religions and the fact that violent expansion will not be tolerated. Prisons and detention centers are recruiting grounds for radical Islamists. The National Military Strategic Plan for the War on Terrorism Campaign Plan does not sufficiently develop a strategy to counter the violent Islamic ideologies in order to hinder conversions of detainees into terrorists. Addressing the violent Islamic ideology at the grass roots level may decrease the number of terrorist recruitment and increase the number of Muslims appealing to a nonviolent interpretation of the Qur'an. The author recommends an anti-violent Islamic ministry program which educates detainees and prisoners through Muslim clerics. Islamic and western countries are relying on moderate Muslim ministers to promote nonviolent ideologies to counter the terrorist recruitment. Egypt and Yemen are witnessing conversions by militant Islamists to moderate Muslims. The United Kingdom and France are appealing to moderate Muslim clerics to address the growing number of radicalized citizens in their prisons. The U.S. Bureau of Prisons Muslim chaplaincy program offers a framework to select Muslim religious service providers for a Muslim prison ministry program. Sufficient legal, ethical and moral framework exists to argue for the availability of a ministry program to personnel in U.S. custody. This indirect approach focuses on conflict resolution and relies on Muslims who reject the violent interpretation of the Qur'an, commentaries, the hadith, the fiqh and the law. Immigrants form close communities, maintain many of their customs and cultural ties to their home countries and their faith. The initial question of this study concerns the debate between those who believe in a general Islamic threat, as defined most eloquently by Samuel P. Huntington in The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order, and others who see a small band of religious fanatics who have hijacked Islam from the moderate majority. This question about the source of terrorism has importance to the major Islamic nations as it does for Latin American countries, where Muslims are a largely undistinguishable minority. The preliminary answer for Latin America is that the United States should not be alarmed at the potential for Islamic fundamentalism, but sufficiently concerned to keep a watchful eye on future developments. In fact Connell suggests that the demographics do not favor the growth of ane ffective radical movement. If there are too few Muslims in LatinA merica to birth radicalism, there is on the other hand, a very active and extensivenative, nonIslamic terrorism. The author connects these dots because he sees a latent connection to Muslims in the areas where terrorist organizations and drug traffickers proliferate. It is a potentially easy step for incipient Muslim radicals to get caught up and find beneficial purpose with these criminals. Reinventing Protestant Germany
A revealing account of how German Protestant leaders embraced democratic ideals after WWII, while firmly and consequentially refusing to account for their earlier complicity with Nazism. Germany's Protestant churches, longtime strongholds of nationalism and militarism, largely backed the Nazi dictatorship that took power in 1933. For many Protestant leaders, pastors, and activists, national and religious revival were one and the same. Even those who opposed the regime tended toward antidemocratic attitudes. By the 1950s, however, Church leaders in West Germany had repositioned themselves as prominent advocates for constitutional democracy and human rights. Brandon Bloch reveals how this remarkable ideological shift came to pass, following the cohort of theologians, pastors, and lay intellectuals who spearheaded the postwar transformation of their church. Born around the turn of the twentieth century, these individuals came of age amid the turbulence of the Weimar Republic and were easily swayed to complicity with the Third Reich. They accommodated the state in hopes of protecting the Church's independence from it, but they also embraced the Nazi regime's antisemitic and anticommunist platform. After the war, under the pressures of Allied occupation, these Protestant intellectuals and their heirs creatively reimagined their tradition as a fount of democratic and humanitarian values. But while they campaigned for family law reform, conscientious objection to military service, and the protection of basic rights, they also promoted a narrative of Christian anti-Nazi resistance that whitewashed the Church's complicity in dictatorship and genocide. Examining the sources and limits of democratic transformation, Reinventing Protestant Germany sheds new light on the development of postwar European politics and the power of national myths.
