Vivekachudamani - Crest Jewel of Discrimination Sri Adi Shankara is the author of Vivekachudamani, which can be translated as "Crest-Jewel of discrimination". By distinguishing the real from the illusion, the truth can emerge. In 580 verses, Shankara has shown man's attachment to the unreal illusion and the path to liberation. The basis of his philosophy is the non-dualistic Advaita Vedanta.Sri Adi Shankara lived during the late 7th and early 8th centuries in India. His guru (teacher) was Govindapada. Shankara had numerous disciples who accompanied him during his wanderings in India. During these wanderings he met scribes from various spiritual sects and religions whom he was eager to meet in spiritual discussions. He established the path to attain salvation by removing all obstacles and closed to all questionable interpretations. He has commented on many of the sacred scriptures of Hinduism such as; Brahma-sutras, Bhagavadgita and the Upanishads, but he has also written a number of his own books to illuminate Advaita Vedanta. Shankara died early, he was then 32 years old.Shankara's non-dualistic Advaita Vedanta emerges from a presence in Ātman and appears as a timeless eternal wisdom. However, Shankara has used some words and expressions from the zeitgeist in which he lived during the late 7th and early 8th centuries in India. I have tried in my comments to use the words and comments of today without disturbing the timeless truths that exist beyond the words. My comments are written in italics.

The aim of this work is to warn of worse things to come by means of an ideology-critical analysis of Islamic fundamentalism. The argument "Nobody could have known that", which in reality should read "Nobody wanted to know that", is today once again beginning to promote the wishful thinking of an "inherently tolerant and peaceful Islam". If no balance can be achieved between Western and Quranic thinking, the worst must be expected. The "supra-naturalistic value system" of Islam is to be critically reflected upon from the philosophical position of realism (understood as a value-neutral collective term for many philosophical currents), which assumes the existence and at least partial recognizability of an extra-subjectively existing external world.
Final Judgement and the Dead in Medieval Jewish Thought
Through a detailed analysis of ghost tales in the Ashkenazi pietistic work Sefer ḥasidim, Susan Weissman documents a major transformation in Jewish attitudes and practices regarding the dead and the afterlife that took place between the rabbinic period and medieval times. She reveals that a huge influx of Germano-Christian beliefs, customs, and fears relating to the dead and the afterlife seeped into medieval Ashkenazi society among both elite and popular groups. In matters of sin, penance, and posthumous punishment, the infiltration of Christian notions was so strong as to effect a radical departure in Pietist thinking from rabbinic thought and to spur outright contradiction of talmudic principles regarding the realm of the hereafter. Although it is primarily a study of the culture of a medieval Jewish enclave, this book demonstrates how seminal beliefs of medieval Christendom and monastic ideals could take root in a society with contrary religious values--even in the realm of doctrinal belief.

This led to the actual conversion of a Jew in Boston a few decades later, an event that directly produced the first kabbalistic book conceived of and published in America. That book was read by an eventual president of Yale College, who went on to engage in a deep study of Kabbalah that would prod him to involve the likes of Benjamin Franklin, and to give a public oration at Yale in 1781 calling for an infusion of Kabbalah and Jewish thought into the Protestant colleges of America.
