Vidas Escandalosas.
Vidas escandalosas is the first anthology of Latin American literary texts from the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century that present a broad range of sexual diversity. Our purpose is to introduce unknown texts, in addition to some known ones, that show the great variety of expressions of homoerotic desire, and sometimes of homophobia and transphobia, remembering, as Peter Stallybrass and Allon White say in their classic study of poetics and the politics of transgression, that disgust sometimes bears the mark of desire. Strange, sandalous or the dark are also ways to start naming other relationships, other identities, other scandalous lives.
Cuerpos Exhumados
The author of this book extends an invitation to question Ecuadorian literary historiography and, implicitly, any literary corpus built with a national project a its starting point. In order to do this, she uses problematic body images that the literary canon has overlooked. Saturated with violence and normalized historical exclusions, these images have an uncomfortable weight that has been conveniently forgotten. The work thus proposes a methodology: the exhumation of those bodies that points to a reading by intuition. It then becomes about imagining so as to recover the remains that have been buried under a set of traditional values, both aesthetic and political which instead of expanding, restrict the possibilities of reading certain literary works beyond the constitutive requirements of a nation. In an interdisciplinary dialogue with image theories and with studies of the body and disability, these pages raise a claim for the political and ethical nature of any exercise in literary criticism.
This novel by Guimar瓊es tells the story of the emancipation of an enslaved woman in Brazil in the first third of the 19th century and is rescued by a wealthy man who falls in love with her. Recognized as one of the few novels with an abolitionist theme in Brazil in the 19th century, La esclava Isaura (Isaura, the slave) (1875), also advances the idea of the right of the individual, even the enslaved, to love and the dignity of their spirit, and protests against the ideas inherited from the social primacy of wealth and ancestry, themes that had been claimed since the literature of the renaissance and that had gained greater momentum with the Enlightenment. The contradiction that limits the liberating ideological projection of this work by Guimar瓊es, however, lies in the racial theme and in the very definition of abolitionism. As the narrator emphasises that the enslavement suffered by his mixed-race heroine is unjust because she is 'too white' to be enslaved, he reveals a tacit approval of the normalisation of the relationship between so-called blacks and slave subjectivity. Despite its abolitionist premise, the book ignores the great masses of enslaved Africans and Afro-Creoles in Brazil. This stance places Guimar瓊es side by side with the rest of the 19th century Brazilian intellectuals regarding the issue of slavery and contributes to forming the founding narrative of the nation.
The Haiti Exception
This collection of essays considers the means and extent of Haiti's 'exceptionalization' - its perception in multiple arenas as definitively unique with respect not only to the countries of the North Atlantic, but also to the rest of the Americas. Painted as repulsive and attractive, abject and resilient, singular and exemplary, Haiti has long been framed discursively by an extraordinary epistemological ambivalence. This nation has served at once as cautionary tale, model for humanitarian aid and development projects and point of origin for general theorising of the so-called Third World. What to make of this dialectic of exemplarity and alterity? How to pull apart this multivalent narrative in order to examine its constituent parts? Conscientiously gesturing to James Clifford's The Predicament of Culture (1988), the contributors to The Haiti Exception work on the edge of multiple disciplines, notably that of anthropology, to take up these and other such questions from a variety of methodological and disciplinary perspectives, including Africana Studies, Anthrohistory, Art History, Black Studies, Caribbean Studies, education, ethnology, Jewish Studies, Literary Studies, Performance Studies and Urban Studies. As contributors revise and interrogate their respective praxes, they accept the challenge of thinking about the particular stakes of and motivations for their own commitment to Haiti.
Iron穩a Y Violencia En La Literatura Latinoamericana Contempor獺nea
This book aims to explore the links between irony -and its contiguous forms such as cynicism, the absurd, parody or black humor- and violence in contemporary Latin American literature. The objective is to create a novel approach between two theoretical paradigms: the field of ironology, on the one hand, and the studies of violence and memory, on the other. Thus, the different contributions intend to explore the following central question: what is the subversive scope of irony and how should we appreciate its ethical, affective and political dimension in the Latin American literary discourse on violence? The principle of diversity is what governs this compilation of essays. It includes the variety of locations and experiences of extreme violence (from the dictatorships of the Southern Cone through Central America to Mexico); the historical epochs on which the literary texts are concerned; and the various aesthetic proposals that the texts offer. Finally, diversity also concerns the different definitions handled by the authors (from Hegel to Kierkegaard, De Man, Hutcheon or Rorty) to approach the various relationships between irony and violence.

A Caribbean Poetics of Spirit
A Caribbean Poetics of Spirit offers a rare and penetrativeexploration into Caribbean literary articulations of non-material and numinouspresences. The study incorporates representations of African-Caribbean and Indigenousmythologies, syncretic spirituality, and magico-religious practices. From textsby ten writers, Hannah Regis extracts thematic and poetic references toCaribbean spectrality, its formal properties, and signifying practices to probethe nature and fictional representations of historical futures. Regislinks the haunting spectrality of the Middle Passagewith the lingering trauma and violence of the plantation order. She then raisesthe issue of how the latter has impacted complex ontological schema andconsiders how literary engagement with spirits operates as therapeuticinterventions to psychic maladies, and as a potential model for a Caribbeanaesthetic. This book also boldly re-conceptualizes ontological andepistemological approaches to contestcolonial and neocolonial hegemonic ways of being. It provides a comprehensivetaxonomy of Caribbean creative and intellectual practices, and theories foreffectively categorizing and explaining the emergence and workings of spiritpresences. Regis combines diverse theoretical perspectives from a range ofscholars working within the traditions of postmemory, cultural memory, spirituality and Caribbean philosophy to formulate a crucial counter-archivalhistory through which the voices of the oppressed find articulation andbelonging while indexing a repository of cultural, psychological and affectiveexpressions that are linked to the unfinished business of history. The writeradroitly contends that a Caribbean poetics of spirit sits at the edge of a newwave of literary criticism.

The Goddess A Demon
Ethel M. Chapman's "God's Green Country: A Novel of Canadian Rural Life" is a poignant depiction of rural Canadian life that captures the spirit of community, resiliency, and the splendour of the natural world. The story, which is set against the backdrop of rural Canada, follows a number of characters as they deal with the pleasures and difficulties of rural life. Fundamentally, the narrative honours the strong ties that are created in a tiny farming community where neighbours depend on one another for companionship and support. Through the experiences of the people, Chapman delves into issues of endurance, hard work, and the close ties to the land that characterise rural life. Readers will be gripped by Marsh's skilful tension-building throughout the book as the mystery around Helen's identity and intentions gradually comes to light. The book offers a provocative reflection on the nature of evil and the attraction of the forbidden as it tackles topics of obsession, desire, and the darker side of human nature.
Dark Soil
Eight authors' works of personal nonfiction join with ten stories by Karen Tei Yamashita to illuminate the hidden histories of places large and small. Faced with a scant historical record, Karen Tei Yamashita turns to fiction to animate the secrets of Santa Cruz, the city she's called home for nearly three decades. Her characters come alive through her signature witty humor and surreal premises, transcending the past and urging themselves into the present to illuminate a hidden geography of this California coastal city unseen in textbooks. Alongside these stories, eight nonfiction writers chart their own counternarratives of place through the greater United States. Diverging and converging in their scale and scope, from an unnamed lot on the bank of the Ohio River to the territory of Guam, their essays use language as an instrument of excavation, uncovering layers of hurt and desire concealed in the land.

Connecticut Literary Anthology 2024
Woodhall Press is proud to once again to showcase incredible writers from all over the state of Connecticut. The 2024 Connecticut Literary Anthology features new writers, old pros, and writers that fit somewhere in between. Returning editor and prize-winning author Victoria Buitron and guest editors Summer Tate and Christine Kandic Torres have constellated together the best poetry, nonfiction, and prose from Connecticut writers. I have laughed and cried reading all the featured work, which is a testament of the fruitful and praiseworthy work that the Nutmeg State continues to churn out. I did not merely examine these pieces or collaborate with the wonderful contributors throughout the editing process. My stomach did leaps after a cartwheel gone wrong; I cupped my heart along the trails of backwoods, and I withstood the cold of rainy mornings. I did not read these pieces-- I felt them in a visceral way. May you take flight with each of them, and I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I did. -- Victoria Buitron, Series and Nonfiction Editor Connecticut is home. It is where we return after finding stories in other people's neighborhoods and countryside. It is where we build our nests. -- Summer Tate, Poetry Editor The stories in this year's anthology demonstrate commitment to community in all its complexity: from a working-class school auditorium in Waterbury, to the power-hungry Foxtail Condo Homeowners Association; from the crack-haunted streets of Fair Haven, to the highly manicured lawns of Darien, to London, to the Vineyard, and beyond. So many tackle the question of home-- that is, wanting to escape home; to control it; to protect, to renovate; even to seek unlikely refuge in an abandoned one. These short stories captured different, though perhaps uniquely Connecticut perspectives from across the state. -- Christine Kandic Torres, Fiction Editor
A Material Rain
Deeply personal and deeply political, the poems of Kyle-Sidell in A Material Rain are a record, analysis, and critique of current American society. His poetry describes the rage of the impotent, the impotence of the disengaged, and the numbing fog of cynical self-regard that blankets his country. He spares no one - politicians, lobbyists, the wielders of interest, the indifferent - but always, his most unflinching, most searching examination is turned on himself. He is always looking for the glimmer of an answer, for something with which he can arm himself and those he cares for, to make sense, to give hope, to point the way.
Ars Poetica and Other Poems
This book is a collection of poems selected from 40 years of writing. The science of poetry is to translate the intangible thinking of the right brain into a familiar left brain world of matter. No attempt has been made to order the poems, either alphabetically or chronologically or by themes, in the hope that each poem will come as a surprise and maintain interest. There are a number of poems on the subject of language throughout the book. To understand some of them, it may be necessary to have an awareness of the thought behind them. The author is passionately interested in how the presence of language influences the process of thought. Did, for instance, early societies before language, see their world as one? Does the existence of over a million words, a million labels, in our contemporary world, tend to make us think fractionally? These poems are the tangibles of philosophies that have entered my mind over the past 92 years, and the many issues that all lives have to deal with. They are namely...an autobiography of thought.
Love as a Way of Knowing
Between 1944 and 1963 the author was born into and grew up in the literal and violent Jim Crow culture and spirit within the Mississippi Delta. In all matters of life and death within this Jim Crow world, white males were its interpreters of spiritual and secular rules, their interpretations, and implementations. This worldview was fluid and often implemented through literal and occasionally violent and deadly means by white folks who set examples for all sub-cultures such as black folks. Those examples and both spoken and written words from and by white males to black folks defined the parameters of what, when, how or whether most black folks had rights to white male-definitions of life, and poverty. For many black males it was understood that the Old Testament of the Bible was the unspoken and clearly understood overarching spiritual source of religiosity for all and passed down from white men to black males and preachers in particular. In a similar manner, the white superintendent dominated all aspects of the towns and its surrounding area's education through his control of the black superintendent. It was implicitly understood in my home that the source of all these beliefs and feelings was the Old Testament of the Bible and that "God was a wrathful God." In short, God did not tolerate any form or kind of sin. In the black home, the male was the dominant figure and his primary responsibility was to enforce "the white man's rule" to the best of his abilities, and that was usually limited by his education and mental capacities. An ignorant black male with limited to no education, intelligence, compassion or lack thereof, was a serious concern in any home. If that person was ignorant, mentally challenged, and violent, the lives of the lady of the house and their children may be in a state of constant danger. The author grew up within this kind of home and environment and this is his story.
Listen to Your Elders
An anthology of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry written by San Francisco Bay Area seniors who have participated in classes as a part of the Litquake Foundation's Elder Project. This anthology features work from some of the participants in workshops, classes, or storytelling sessions between the Summer of 2022 and Fall of 2023. This is writing from 33 writers who are residents and attendees across all of the sites we serve as of 2023: Cayuga Connectors and Life Remembered at Bethel Church through the Community Living Campaign, Downtown Oakland Senior Center, Dr. George Davis Senior Center, and the San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living. In this anthology, you'll read about the kid who, on a drive through bucolic '60s Tennessee, gets a matter-of-fact lesson in racism from his dapper Uncle Roy. You'll meet a Jewish youth assigned a Nazi to tutor him in German in the late '40s, a story told in sly deadpan. In the '50s, a girl parked with her boyfriend on a runway is interrupted in their make-out session by the sudden shriek of a military jet. Dancing ensues.A lot of dancing appears in this collection-as does love, for friends, partners (those alive and those gone), dogs, cats, horses, and the sight of moonlight at 5 a.m. Parents continue to confound the writers, a half-century after they left home. (As D. Fromm writes: "Semi-waking, semi-sleeping, I was visited by mom / who said that her grave didn't look finished聶") You'll hear about war (WWII, war with Korea, the Cold War, not to mention Star Wars), and rage between spouses (in fiction and nonfiction). You'll travel to Indiana, Coney Island, Japan, and of course our beloved, imperfect Bay Area. Elder Project is a focuses on creative expression for seniors in the community through writing and performances. The project brings teaching artists to the elders in a classroom accessible to them in-person or online. The class and writing partnerships allow elders to discuss and record past and current life experiences, resulting in personal empowerment through creativity.Learn more at www.litquake.org/elderproject.html.

Divine Style
In exploring the seminal works of Walt Whitman, the great American poet, many commentators have acknowledged the underlying influence of The King James Bible. However, a study has yet to elucidate the precise manner in which the Bible has shaped Whitman's poetic style. This is the deficit that F. W. Dobbs-Allsopp seeks to address in his new piece of literary scholarship: 'Divine Style: Walt Whitman and the King James Bible'. Dobbs-Allsopp, Professor of Old Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary, explicitly approaches Whitman from the perspective of a biblical scholar.Utilising his wealth of expertise in this field, he constructs a compelling, erudite and methodical argument for the King James Bible's importance in the evolution of Whitman's style - from his signature long lines to the prevalence of parallelism and tendency towards parataxis in his works.'Divine Style' focuses on Whitman's output in the years preceding the release of his 1855 opus 'Leaves of Grass' through the general period of the book's first three editions. In this, Dobbs-Allsopp's exploration of the period is exhaustive - covering not just Leaves of Grass but recently recovered notebooks, newly digitised manuscripts and additions to the corpus, such as the novel 'Life and Adventures of Jack Engle'.This is a work of careful, detailed scholarship, offering an authoritative commentary that will be a valuable resource for students of Whitman, biblical scholars and scholars of literature more generally.

The Writer as Illusionist
"Illuminating . . . Handling strong emotions--shame, love, grief--without fuss, Maxwell gives the bald facts of life a poignant shimmer."--Wall Street Journal As a fiction editor at The New Yorker from 1936 to 1975, William Maxwell helped shaped several generations' sense of the literary short story. At the same time, Maxwell himself was also an exceptional novelist, short story writer, essayist, children's author, and memoirist. Given unique, unfettered access to Maxwell's private papers, Alec Wilkson--whose memoir My Mentor explores his twenty-five-year friendship with Maxwell--has gathered a stunning and revealing collection of some of Maxwell's lesser-known and previously unpublished works of nonfiction and fiction. The Writer as Illusionist includes biographical sketches; remembrances of fellow authors, such as the poet Louise Bogan and short story writer Maeve Brennan; a 1941 nonfiction piece about Bermuda that was the only piece of long reporting Maxwell ever published in The New Yorker; and Maxwell's thoughts on the craft of writing, many of them made privately. While Maxwell often said he never kept a journal because anything worth writing about was something a writer would remember, The Writer as Illusionist proves otherwise: included are many notes from his private journals, including some that became parts of his revered novels, such as The Folded Leaf. Re-reading Maxwell's work leads Wilkinson to think "I am still often amazed--at the subtlety of the art, the depth of what he saw, at his capacity for dramatizing situations that require a rare hand and eye." Maxwell passed away in 2000 at the age of ninety-one. The Writer as Illusionist celebrates his legacy in American letters and is part of Godine's Nonpareil series.

Midlife
A collection of short lyrics, imitations, and dramatic monologues, Midlife contains the best poems Matthew Buckley Smith has written in the nine years since his debut collection. Though the poems in Midlife are not limited to any single project, many touch on recurrent themes, among these the trials of childrearing and marriage, the ever-present shadow of what Larkin calls "Extinction's alp," and the anxious search for meaning that so often attends middle age. As suggested by the epigraph, this is a book that treats with compassion the paradoxical longing that so many of us share with Flaubert's heroine, namely "to die, and also to live in Paris."

Barely Half in an Awkward Line
Barely Half in an Awkward Line weaves together photographs - featuring desolate rural and urban landscapes, thought-provoking and often-bizarre portraits of masked subjects, and abandoned homes - with writing on poverty, chemical abuse, homelessness, violence, class struggle, and the mishaps of destructive love and misguided choices. This prescient, genre-resistant, multimedia work of art examines the insecurities and terrors derived from the habitual traumas of struggling to find humanity within an inhumane society.
Life’s Wisdom
I have always been intrigued by the power of words. In the course of my engineering and manufacturing career I was fortunate to have a mentor who taught me about the use of vocabulary and how the precise application of just the right word made a difference when expressing a particular thought. I especially appreciated it when a small selection of words came together to make a terse but potent thought. I often applied what I learned resulting in the creation of many what I felt were economic and effective sayings. I also appreciated and took note of sayings by others. Soon I began to amass a collection of these thoughts and sayings. While many are of my own creation, an equal number are the product of other people's wisdom. Those that I liked or identified with were either adopted or adapted. These little gems of wisdom can take many forms depending on the situation. They can be simply an observation about life, a bit of advice, a snappy comeback, a witty remark, a political comment or even an insult. What better way to share these little bits of wisdom than to put them down in a book. The thoughts that are not my own have not been attributed to any other author as they often appear credited to different sources and most have no source at all as they have simply become a part of our collective culture. The reader will note that often there are many variations on the same or similar themes. Each time I chose to apply one of these in a life situation, it often came out a little different depending on the particular application or whatever mood I was in. I have chosen to include nearly all variations. Since I wanted this book to be an interesting read and not simply a boring reference book, I have not categorized or grouped them by topic but listed them in a random fashion so that each one has the potential to be a surprise. Enjoy this collection of "Life's Wisdom". Jay Winn weegordie7@yahoo.com
