Juan,Gelman  著
2024/10/19 出版

One of Latin American's most important poets of the twentieth century, Juan Gelman (1930-2014) spent much of his life in exile from his native Argentina during the Dirty War. Gelman was a child of Yiddish-speaking Ukrainian immigrants, and a significant, seldom recognized portion of his poetry dealt with Jewish themes. He established a dialogue across time with Santa Teresa de ?vila and San Juan de la Cruz, the sixteenth-century Spanish mystical poets whose ancestry was also Jewish. He rewrote portions of the Bible, medieval Hebrew poetry, and even taught himself Ladino, the language of Sephardic Jews, and wrote a book of poems in it. In this bilingual volume, celebrated scholar Ilan Stavans retraces Gelman's regard for these poetic ancestors, translating into English his Jewish oeuvre by carefully preserving the Hebrew, Spanish, and Ladino echoes of the originals. The result is historically accurate and artistically exhilarating, repositioning Gelman as a major Jewish writer of the last century.

Bits Too

Doug,Downie  著
Lulu.com 出版
2024/10/04 出版

As in Bits off Burning Bridges, in writing the bits that follow I set four main constraints on myself: 1) they had to be short; short enough to fit on a screen without any need to scroll down; 2) they had to be true to the rhythm of everyday, or better, every night speech; 3) they had to somehow have a point or feel or image that made them seem to punch above their weight; 4) they couldn't stray too far from the spontaneous-some next day tweaking might be acceptable but then they're gone. Though they may have a superficial resemblance to poems I resist any temptation to call them that. I like some poetry but I'm not a huge fan and I'm not deeply familiar with the body of poetry. Unlike most poems these bits do not have titles. Titles would be distracting, and in any case, bits don't need titles. They speak for themselves. These things are bits, no more and no less. Also as in Bits off Burning Bridges, they are presented chronologically as written, without any re-arranging.

If You Ask Me

Atria Book 出版
2024/09/25 出版

Experience the "heartwarming, smart, and at times even humorous" (Woman's World) wisdom of Eleanor Roosevelt in this annotated collection of the candid advice columns that she wrote for more than twenty years. In 1941, Eleanor Roosevelt embarked on a new career as an advice columnist. She had already transformed the role of first lady with her regular press conferences, her activism on behalf of women, minorities, and youth, her lecture tours, and her syndicated newspaper column. When Ladies Home Journal offered her an advice column, she embraced it as yet another way for her to connect with the public. "If You Ask Me" quickly became a lifeline for Americans of all ages. Over the twenty years that Eleanor wrote her advice column, no question was too trivial and no topic was out of bounds. Practical, warm-hearted, and often witty, Eleanor's answers were so forthright her editors included a disclaimer that her views were not necessarily those of the magazines or the Roosevelt administration. Asked, for example, if she had any Republican friends, she replied, "I hope so." Queried about whether or when she would retire, she said, "I never plan ahead." As for the suggestion that federal or state governments build public bomb shelters, she considered the idea "nonsense." Covering a wide variety of topics--everything from war, peace, and politics to love, marriage, religion, and popular culture--these columns reveal Eleanor Roosevelt's warmth, humanity, and timeless relevance.

An Old Town By The Sea

Double 9 Books 出版
2024/09/07 出版

"An Old Town by the Sea" by Thomas Bailey Aldrich is a poetic exploration of a seaside town that blends nostalgia, beauty, and a sense of timelessness. Aldrich paints a vivid picture of this coastal community, where the sea plays a central role in shaping both the physical landscape and the emotional tapestry of the town's inhabitants. The poem begins with a lyrical description of the town's setting, emphasizing its serene and picturesque qualities. Throughout the poem, Aldrich weaves together themes of memory and nostalgia. He reminisces about the town's history and reflects on the fleeting nature of time. The old-fashioned houses and narrow streets evoke a sense of tradition and a connection to the past, suggesting that the town holds memories and stories that transcend generation. At its core, "An Old Town by the Sea" is a meditation on the enduring allure of places that hold a special significance in our hearts. It invites readers to contemplate the beauty of natural landscapes and the profound impact they can have on our memories and sense of identity. Aldrich's poetic imagery and lyrical language create a timeless portrait of a coastal town, inviting readers to immerse themselves in its charm and reflect on the deeper meanings hidden within its quiet streets and rolling tides.

Canadian Shields

2024/08/21 出版

Newly discovered work by one of Canada's favourite writers The Canadian Shields brings together fifty short writings by Carol Shields (1935-2003), including more than two dozen previously unpublished short stories and essays and two dozen essays previously published but never before collected. Invaluable to scholars and admirers of Shields's work, the writings discovered in the National Library Archives by Nora Foster Stovel and presented to the public here for the first time reflect Shields's interest in the relationships between reality and fiction, mothers and daughters, and gender and genre. They also reveal her love of Canada, especially Winnipeg, her home for twenty years. Originally written for women's magazines, travel journals, convocation addresses, and even graduate school term papers, Shields's imaginative essays explore ideas about home, Canadian literature, contemporary women's writing, and the future of fiction. Whether autobiographical, cultural, or feminist in focus, these works vividly illuminate the multiple chapters of Shields's writing life. Margaret Atwood and Lorna Crozier frame Shields's texts with tributes to her work and impact. An introduction by Stovel situates Shields as a Canadian author and subversive feminist writer, demonstrating how American-born-and-raised Carol Anne Warner became "the Canadian Shields"--a quintessential and beloved Canadian writer and the only author to win both the Pulitzer Prize and the Governor General's Gold Medal for Fiction.

Conversations with William Maxwell

University P 出版
2024/08/16 出版

Conversations with William Maxwell collects thirty-eight interviews, public speeches, and remarks that span five decades of the esteemed novelist and New Yorker editor's career. The interviews collectively address the entirety of Maxwel's literary work--with in-depth discussion of his short stories, essays, and novels including They Came Like Swallows, The Folded Leaf, and the American Book Award-winning So Long, See You Tomorrow--as well as his forty-year tenure as a fiction editor working with such luminaries as John Updike, John Cheever, Eudora Welty, Vladimir Nabokov, and J.D. Salinger. Maxwell's words spoken before a crowd, some previously unpublished, pay moving tribute to literary friends and mentors, and offer reflections on the artistic life, the process of writing, and his midwestern heritage. All retain the reserved poignancy of his fiction. The volume publishes for the first time the full transcript of Maxwell's extensive interviews with his biographer and, in an introduction, correspondence with writers including Updike and Saul Bellow, which enlivens the stories behind his interviews and appearances.

Slippery Ochro

2024/07/14 出版

In this delightful, fast moving and often humorous tale, Guyanese-Canadian writer Kennard Ramphal transports the reader to the village of Canal Number 2 Polder in British Guiana as it's about to achieve nationhood from Britain. SLIPPERY OCHRO and his wife PHULMATTIE, notorious for their free-wheeling and cunning lifestyle, are about to inveigle their way into the lives of retirees MOHABIR and his wife DULARIE, who are content to live out their existence in peace, enjoying the fruits of their labour. Little do they know that Slippery and his wife have other plans for them. Ramphal provides a perceptive backdrop into the lives of workers and plantation life in sugar estates in Guyana, along with a pervasive "rum culture" existing in the rural areas during the 60's when this novel is set. "Give them an inch and they'll take a mile, states an English proverb, and so goes the story of Mohabir and Dularie when they allow Slippery Ochro and his wife Phulmattie to build a small house on their property. The setting is the rustic village of Canal No. 2 Polder in British Guyana, prior to the country's independence in 1966. The residents earn their living from farming and working on the Wales Sugar Estate. and lead simple lives in traditional fashion. The characters speak in their local English dialect, which is skillfully used to develop the plot as the timeless story unfolds."-Elaine Balpataky, Retired teacher/librarian- "A trip down memory lane...a delightful look into the rustic country life in Guyana in the 1960s and 1970s...something for everyone, and the scheming, the simple innocence, the rum shop culture, the sexual innuendoes, the greed, and the wise counsel of the village fathers, make for enjoyable reading. Kennard has a gift of bringing his characters to life as the story unravels."-Carl B. L. Morgan, Colonel (Ret)- "In this delightful, fast moving and often humorous tale, Guyanese Canadian writer Ken Ramphal transports us to the nostalgic village of Canal Number 2 Polder. We are swept along by the exploits of the village huckster and confidence trickster, aptly nicknamed Slippery Ochro, and his wife Phulmattie."-Ram Jagessar-Author: The Man Who Broke the Lottery "Ramphal's gripping tale is based on two real-life characters, but we all know people like Slippery Ochro and Phulmattie. Ramphal's work is universal. A must read."Roop Misir, Ph.D. Author: OAC Biology Workbook-Student's Edition

Women in Hispanic Literature

Beth,Miller  著
2024/06/28 出版

The topics covered by this pioneering collection of essays range from peninsular Spanish to Latin American literature, from the eleventh to the twentieth centuries, and from the subject of women as portrayed in Hispanic literature to the literature of Hispanic women writers. Some pieces present polemical feminist arguments, other are more traditional. All the contributors use their subject to take new stands on old controversies, ask new questions, and reevaluate important aspects of Hispanic literature. While there is ample evidence in these essays of the dual archetype in Hispanic literature of women as icon and woman as fallen idol, the collection reaches beyond these stereotypes to more complex sociological and theoretical concerns. Although such research has ben abundantly pursued by scholars of English and American literature, it has been notably absent from Hispanic studies. This anthology is a comprehensive introduction to its subject and a stimulus to further work in the area. This Earth, That Sky

2024/06/26 出版

This is a generous, long-overdue presentation of the major Brazilian poet Manuel Bandeira (1886-1968) to the English-speaking reader. Well over a hundred poems appear here in both Portuguese and English, together with a critical overview that introduces the poet and Brazilian poetry to the nonspecialist and contributes significantly to the existing body of Bandeira scholarship. Bandeira's poetry not only stands among the most important in twentieth-century Brazil but also embodies the experience of transition from one literary movement to another. The poems span a half century of writing, from the publication of Bandeira's first book in 1917 to the definitive edition of his collected work in 1966. Because critics agree that the poet's most influential creative efforts began in 1930 with the publication of Libertinagem (Libertinism), the collection concentrates on the later period. A smaller number of poems drawn from the three books published before this date provide a useful basis for comparison. Candace Slater's fine versions of the poems are augmented by a translator's note that considers Bandeira's poetic language in terms of the particular challenges it offers the translator into English. Her introduction offers a fresh and comprehensive look at the poet whose artistic transformation from nineteenth-century modes of expression to experimental twentieth-century Modernism paralleled the transformation of his country. It focuses on the poet's continuing alternation between an acceptance of, if not allegiance to, the material world and a desire for something more. This fundamental though often subtle opposition is reflected in the title, This Earth, That Sky. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. War and Imagination

Ronald,Koury  著
2024/06/08 出版

Stories of war and conflict form the backbone of much of the Western literary canon, portraying a certain image of heroism, stoicism, and survival in the face of violence. War and Imagination challenges the canon with essays, short stories, and a wide variety of perspectives. Paying particular attention to the twentieth century and prioritizing the writings of civilians, the works highlighted in War and Imagination offer an opportunity to challenge representations of well-known conflicts with a wide variety of pieces from the frontlines and beyond, such as letters from German soldiers at the siege of Stalingrad, a Holocaust memoir by physicist Abraham Pais, a previously unpublished story by Tennessee Williams, a haunting tale of the Spanish Civil War, and a fresh translation of the final act of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. The selections chosen from this anthology make real the unimaginable horrors of survival during wartime while showcasing unique interpretations that allow readers to ponder the mystery from another point of view. War and Imagination includes selections from Tennessee Williams, Louis Simpson, Nina Bogin, Leo Tolstoy, Lara Prescott, Maxine Kumin, Benjamin Fondane, Maria Terrone, Brooke Allen, and more.

In the middle of the nineteenth century, the highest paid and most famous newspaper writer in the US was a woman known to the world as Fanny Fern, the nom de plume of Sara Payson Willis. A Fanny Fern Reader features a selection of Fern's columns, mostly from her years as a weekly columnist for the New York Ledger, along with an introduction that shares the remarkable story of Fern's perseverance and success as a woman in a male-dominated profession. For readers in her own time, Fern's frank and unbridled social commentary and boldly satirical voice made her a household name. Fern's subversive and witty commentary about social mores, gender roles, childhood, authorship, and family life transcend time and continue to resonate with and entertain readers today. A Fanny Fern Reader is the most extensive collection of Fern's newspaper writings to date and includes several works that have been out of print for over a century, making this author's writing on a wide range of issues accessible for readers within and outside of classrooms and academic settings.

Robert Sieviec's poetry encompasses family dynamics; the past and present as it relates to ongoing experience; observations of seasonality and the saeculum (circle or turnings) of life. He is always looking for the insightful, saddening wonderment of life with hope and resignation running throughout. Life is a long time, sometimes too long. (Oni tehan, watohanl osungye tehan.)

Conversations with Tim Gautreaux

University P 出版
2024/05/17 出版

Louisiana writer Tim Gautreaux (b. 1947) writes fiction that mixes equal parts dry humor, tall tales, and deep tragedy. His stories and novels of working-class Acadiana portray lives of inimitably poignant love, loss, and longing. The depth and complexity of Gautreaux's writing invite scholarly appraisals as well, as critics mine the richness of his moral vision. These interviews reveal the intensity of his sense of place, his deep connection to the mechanical and working world, his commitment to the craft of writing, and his Catholic view that has been shaped by Flannery O'Connor and Walker Percy. Conversations with Tim Gautreaux collects interviews from 1993 to 2009 with the author of The Missing, The Clearing, Welding with Children, and many other vital works of fiction. Readers who have been engaged with the themes in his stories and novels will find themselves equally taken with the kind and thoughtful voice they discover in interviews.

Contrarian Commentary

Mel,Fisher  著
FriesenPress 出版
2024/05/15 出版

How did bananas come to be? Who is the most useless member of society? What do language fads tell us about the history of human development? What would space aliens say about our well-kept lawns? These short pieces and essays provide thought-provoking and entertaining social commentary from a point of view not usually seen-that is, Contrarian. Written for a small-town (Dryden, Ontario) newspaper and the author's blog between 2012 and 2023, Mel Fisher appeals to the "common sense of the common people," writing about everything from breakfast cereal to Darwin to global warming to God. Contrarian Commentary pokes fun at the foibles of modern life, questions mainstream media, and celebrates the profound strangeness of humanity on the blue-and-green planet we call home.

Vidas Escandalosas. Antolog穩a de la Diversidad Sexual En Textos Literarios Latinoamericanos de 1850 a 1950

2024/05/05 出版

Vidas escandalosas is the first anthology of Latin American literary texts from the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century that present a broad range of sexual diversity. Our purpose is to introduce unknown texts, in addition to some known ones, that show the great variety of expressions of homoerotic desire, and sometimes of homophobia and transphobia, remembering, as Peter Stallybrass and Allon White say in their classic study of poetics and the politics of transgression, that disgust sometimes bears the mark of desire. Strange, sandalous or the dark are also ways to start naming other relationships, other identities, other scandalous lives.

La Esclava Isaura

2024/05/05 出版

This novel by Guimar瓊es tells the story of the emancipation of an enslaved woman in Brazil in the first third of the 19th century and is rescued by a wealthy man who falls in love with her. Recognized as one of the few novels with an abolitionist theme in Brazil in the 19th century, La esclava Isaura (Isaura, the slave) (1875), also advances the idea of the right of the individual, even the enslaved, to love and the dignity of their spirit, and protests against the ideas inherited from the social primacy of wealth and ancestry, themes that had been claimed since the literature of the renaissance and that had gained greater momentum with the Enlightenment. The contradiction that limits the liberating ideological projection of this work by Guimar瓊es, however, lies in the racial theme and in the very definition of abolitionism. As the narrator emphasises that the enslavement suffered by his mixed-race heroine is unjust because she is 'too white' to be enslaved, he reveals a tacit approval of the normalisation of the relationship between so-called blacks and slave subjectivity. Despite its abolitionist premise, the book ignores the great masses of enslaved Africans and Afro-Creoles in Brazil. This stance places Guimar瓊es side by side with the rest of the 19th century Brazilian intellectuals regarding the issue of slavery and contributes to forming the founding narrative of the nation.

The Haiti Exception

2024/05/05 出版

This collection of essays considers the means and extent of Haiti's 'exceptionalization' - its perception in multiple arenas as definitively unique with respect not only to the countries of the North Atlantic, but also to the rest of the Americas. Painted as repulsive and attractive, abject and resilient, singular and exemplary, Haiti has long been framed discursively by an extraordinary epistemological ambivalence. This nation has served at once as cautionary tale, model for humanitarian aid and development projects and point of origin for general theorising of the so-called Third World. What to make of this dialectic of exemplarity and alterity? How to pull apart this multivalent narrative in order to examine its constituent parts? Conscientiously gesturing to James Clifford's The Predicament of Culture (1988), the contributors to The Haiti Exception work on the edge of multiple disciplines, notably that of anthropology, to take up these and other such questions from a variety of methodological and disciplinary perspectives, including Africana Studies, Anthrohistory, Art History, Black Studies, Caribbean Studies, education, ethnology, Jewish Studies, Literary Studies, Performance Studies and Urban Studies. As contributors revise and interrogate their respective praxes, they accept the challenge of thinking about the particular stakes of and motivations for their own commitment to Haiti.

Cuerpos Exhumados

2024/05/05 出版

The author of this book extends an invitation to question Ecuadorian literary historiography and, implicitly, any literary corpus built with a national project a its starting point. In order to do this, she uses problematic body images that the literary canon has overlooked. Saturated with violence and normalized historical exclusions, these images have an uncomfortable weight that has been conveniently forgotten. The work thus proposes a methodology: the exhumation of those bodies that points to a reading by intuition. It then becomes about imagining so as to recover the remains that have been buried under a set of traditional values, both aesthetic and political which instead of expanding, restrict the possibilities of reading certain literary works beyond the constitutive requirements of a nation. In an interdisciplinary dialogue with image theories and with studies of the body and disability, these pages raise a claim for the political and ethical nature of any exercise in literary criticism.

Iron穩a Y Violencia En La Literatura Latinoamericana Contempor獺nea

2024/05/05 出版

This book aims to explore the links between irony -and its contiguous forms such as cynicism, the absurd, parody or black humor- and violence in contemporary Latin American literature. The objective is to create a novel approach between two theoretical paradigms: the field of ironology, on the one hand, and the studies of violence and memory, on the other. Thus, the different contributions intend to explore the following central question: what is the subversive scope of irony and how should we appreciate its ethical, affective and political dimension in the Latin American literary discourse on violence? The principle of diversity is what governs this compilation of essays. It includes the variety of locations and experiences of extreme violence (from the dictatorships of the Southern Cone through Central America to Mexico); the historical epochs on which the literary texts are concerned; and the various aesthetic proposals that the texts offer. Finally, diversity also concerns the different definitions handled by the authors (from Hegel to Kierkegaard, De Man, Hutcheon or Rorty) to approach the various relationships between irony and violence.

mihko kiskisiwin

FriesenPress 出版
2024/04/23 出版

Thomas King said, "The truth about stories is . . . stories are all that we are." Colonization has tried to erase and eradicate Indigenous narratives for centuries. Even mainstream literature features the same kinds of stories told by the same voices. It fails to recognize the diversity of voices across Turtle Island. Stories exist and persist in diverse and divergent forms.mihko kiskisiwin is a collection of Indigenous North American voices, from incarcerated and diversified Indigenous community members, elders, and youth to people with dis/abilities and 2SLGBTTQQIA+ people. This anthology by the Indigenous Poets Society (Saskatchewan-Ontario) showcases spoken and written poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction from emerging and established artists, writers, and performers. Testimony is at the heart of this collection. With vulnerability and urgency, these writers illuminate the complexities of trauma, identity, and healing. By empowering diverse and divergent Indigenous voices, intersectional awareness and diversity flourish. We see how one story can't possibly encapsulate the breadth of Indigenous North American cultures and experiences. In Cree, "mihko kiskisiwin" means "blood memory." It's the idea that our ancestral knowledge is in our blood's memory, and calls for right relationship - cultural restoration and resilience, inter-related respectfulness, and interconnected reciprocity. This anthology is our stories in our own words - as a revolutionary act of remembering, reclamation & resurgence for future generations to come.

Learning to Love in Winter

2024/04/18 出版

In this thoughtful, confronting collection, Letizia faces life in the bleak, hard winters of the Northeastern United States, an environment which forces its people to acknowledge oblivion and to look for meaning in the experience. If meaning is often out of reach, the poet still looks to build, love, create, teach, learn and to record the effort, facing down oblivion "perhaps out of instinct, habit, conditioning, or simply because there is nothing else to do".This collection is not a record of triumph, but a record of resilience and the of the moments when life lived in knowledge of oblivion still masters it, however briefly.

A Caribbean Poetics of Spirit

Hannah,Regis  著
Ingram 出版
2024/03/08 出版

A Caribbean Poetics of Spirit offers a rare and penetrativeexploration into Caribbean literary articulations of non-material and numinouspresences. The study incorporates representations of African-Caribbean and Indigenousmythologies, syncretic spirituality, and magico-religious practices. From textsby ten writers, Hannah Regis extracts thematic and poetic references toCaribbean spectrality, its formal properties, and signifying practices to probethe nature and fictional representations of historical futures. Regislinks the haunting spectrality of the Middle Passagewith the lingering trauma and violence of the plantation order. She then raisesthe issue of how the latter has impacted complex ontological schema andconsiders how literary engagement with spirits operates as therapeuticinterventions to psychic maladies, and as a potential model for a Caribbeanaesthetic. This book also boldly re-conceptualizes ontological andepistemological approaches to contestcolonial and neocolonial hegemonic ways of being. It provides a comprehensivetaxonomy of Caribbean creative and intellectual practices, and theories foreffectively categorizing and explaining the emergence and workings of spiritpresences. Regis combines diverse theoretical perspectives from a range ofscholars working within the traditions of postmemory, cultural memory, spirituality and Caribbean philosophy to formulate a crucial counter-archivalhistory through which the voices of the oppressed find articulation andbelonging while indexing a repository of cultural, psychological and affectiveexpressions that are linked to the unfinished business of history. The writeradroitly contends that a Caribbean poetics of spirit sits at the edge of a newwave of literary criticism.
