One of Latin American's most important poets of the twentieth century, Juan Gelman (1930-2014) spent much of his life in exile from his native Argentina during the Dirty War. Gelman was a child of Yiddish-speaking Ukrainian immigrants, and a significant, seldom recognized portion of his poetry dealt with Jewish themes. He established a dialogue across time with Santa Teresa de ?vila and San Juan de la Cruz, the sixteenth-century Spanish mystical poets whose ancestry was also Jewish. He rewrote portions of the Bible, medieval Hebrew poetry, and even taught himself Ladino, the language of Sephardic Jews, and wrote a book of poems in it. In this bilingual volume, celebrated scholar Ilan Stavans retraces Gelman's regard for these poetic ancestors, translating into English his Jewish oeuvre by carefully preserving the Hebrew, Spanish, and Ladino echoes of the originals. The result is historically accurate and artistically exhilarating, repositioning Gelman as a major Jewish writer of the last century.
Bits Too
As in Bits off Burning Bridges, in writing the bits that follow I set four main constraints on myself: 1) they had to be short; short enough to fit on a screen without any need to scroll down; 2) they had to be true to the rhythm of everyday, or better, every night speech; 3) they had to somehow have a point or feel or image that made them seem to punch above their weight; 4) they couldn't stray too far from the spontaneous-some next day tweaking might be acceptable but then they're gone. Though they may have a superficial resemblance to poems I resist any temptation to call them that. I like some poetry but I'm not a huge fan and I'm not deeply familiar with the body of poetry. Unlike most poems these bits do not have titles. Titles would be distracting, and in any case, bits don't need titles. They speak for themselves. These things are bits, no more and no less. Also as in Bits off Burning Bridges, they are presented chronologically as written, without any re-arranging.

Slippery Ochro

Aunt Linda
Aunt Linda is an homage to teaching professionals. We never know what influence we have on the lives of other people. That was the case for Linda Roy. She devoted her entire life to teaching. Her work was not just her job, it was her vocation. During her life, Miss Roy was conscient that she helped many children. Women in Hispanic Literature
The topics covered by this pioneering collection of essays range from peninsular Spanish to Latin American literature, from the eleventh to the twentieth centuries, and from the subject of women as portrayed in Hispanic literature to the literature of Hispanic women writers. Some pieces present polemical feminist arguments, other are more traditional. This Earth, That Sky
This is a generous, long-overdue presentation of the major Brazilian poet Manuel Bandeira (1886-1968) to the English-speaking reader. Well over a hundred poems appear here in both Portuguese and English, together with a critical overview that introduces the poet and Brazilian poetry to the nonspecialist and contributes significantly to the existing body of Bandeira scholarship. Bandeira's poetry not only stands among the most important in twentieth-century Brazil but also embodies the experience of transition from one literary movement to another. The poems span a half century of writing, from the publication of Bandeira's first book in 1917 to the definitive edition of his collected work in 1966. Because critics agree that the poet's most influential creative efforts began in 1930 with the publication of Libertinagem (Libertinism), the collection concentrates on the later period. A smaller number of poems drawn from the three books published before this date provide a useful basis for comparison. Candace Slater's fine versions of the poems are augmented by a translator's note that considers Bandeira's poetic language in terms of the particular challenges it offers the translator into English. In the middle of the nineteenth century, the highest paid and most famous newspaper writer in the US was a woman known to the world as Fanny Fern, the nom de plume of Sara Payson Willis. Vidas escandalosas es la primera antolog穩a de textos literarios latinoamericanos de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y la primera mitad del siglo XX que tienen que ver con en amplio registro de la diversidad sexual. Nuestro prop籀sito es poner en circulaci籀n textos desconocidos, adem獺s de algunos conocidos, que muestran la gran variedad de expresiones del deseo homoer籀tico, y a veces de la homofobia y la transfobia, recordando, como dicen Peter Stallybrass y Allon White en su cl獺sico estudio de la po矇tica y la pol穩tica de la transgresi籀n, que el asco a veces lleva la marca del deseo. Lo raro, lo escandaloso, lo tenebroso son tambi矇n maneras de comenzar a nombrar otros amores, identidades otras, vidas otras, escandalosas. Vidas escandalosas is the first anthology of Latin American literary texts from the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century that present a broad range of sexual diversity. Our purpose is to introduce unknown texts, in addition to some known ones, that show the great variety of expressions of homoerotic desire, and sometimes of homophobia and transphobia, remembering, as Peter Stallybrass and Allon White say in their classic study of poetics and the politics of transgression, that disgust sometimes bears the mark of desire. Strange, sandalous or the dark are also ways to start naming other relationships, other identities, other scandalous lives.

Esta novela de Guimar瓊es narra la historia de emancipaci籀n de una mujer esclavizada en el Brasil del primer tercio del siglo XIX y es rescatada por un hombre de la 矇lite que se enamora de ella. Reconocida como una de las pocas novelas de tem獺tica abolicionista en el Brasil decimon籀nico, La esclava Isaura (1875), avanza tambi矇n la idea del derecho del individuo, aun el esclavizado, al amor y a la dignidad del esp穩ritu, y protesta ante las ideas heredadas de la primac穩a social de la riqueza y el abolengo, temas que ven穩an reivindic獺ndose desde la literatura renacentista y que hab穩an cobrado un mayor auge con la Ilustraci籀n. This novel by Guimar瓊es tells the story of the emancipation of an enslaved woman in Brazil in the first third of the 19th century and is rescued by a wealthy man who falls in love with her. Recognized as one of the few novels with an abolitionist theme in Brazil in the 19th century, La esclava Isaura (Isaura, the slave) (1875), also advances the idea of the right of the individual, even the enslaved, to love and the dignity of their spirit, and protests against the ideas inherited from the social primacy of wealth and ancestry, themes that had been claimed since the literature of the renaissance and that had gained greater momentum with the Enlightenment. The contradiction that limits the liberating ideological projection of this work by Guimar瓊es, however, lies in the racial theme and in the very definition of abolitionism. As the narrator emphasises that the enslavement suffered by his mixed-race heroine is unjust because she is 'too white' to be enslaved, he reveals a tacit approval of the normalisation of the relationship between so-called blacks and slave subjectivity. Despite its abolitionist premise, the book ignores the great masses of enslaved Africans and Afro-Creoles in Brazil. This stance places Guimar瓊es side by side with the rest of the 19th century Brazilian intellectuals regarding the issue of slavery and contributes to forming the founding narrative of the nation.
The Haiti Exception
This collection of essays considers the means and extent of Haiti's 'exceptionalization' - its perception in multiple arenas as definitively unique with respect not only to the countries of the North Atlantic, but also to the rest of the Americas. Painted as repulsive and attractive, abject and resilient, singular and exemplary, Haiti has long been framed discursively by an extraordinary epistemological ambivalence. This nation has served at once as cautionary tale, model for humanitarian aid and development projects and point of origin for general theorising of the so-called Third World. What to make of this dialectic of exemplarity and alterity? How to pull apart this multivalent narrative in order to examine its constituent parts? Conscientiously gesturing to James Clifford's The Predicament of Culture (1988), the contributors to The Haiti Exception work on the edge of multiple disciplines, notably that of anthropology, to take up these and other such questions from a variety of methodological and disciplinary perspectives, including Africana Studies, Anthrohistory, Art History, Black Studies, Caribbean Studies, education, ethnology, Jewish Studies, Literary Studies, Performance Studies and Urban Studies. As contributors revise and interrogate their respective praxes, they accept the challenge of thinking about the particular stakes of and motivations for their own commitment to Haiti.

The author of this book extends an invitation to question Ecuadorian literary historiography and, implicitly, any literary corpus built with a national project a its starting point. In order to do this, she uses problematic body images that the literary canon has overlooked. Saturated with violence and normalized historical exclusions, these images have an uncomfortable weight that has been conveniently forgotten. The work thus proposes a methodology: the exhumation of those bodies that points to a reading by intuition. It then becomes about imagining so as to recover the remains that have been buried under a set of traditional values, both aesthetic and political which instead of expanding, restrict the possibilities of reading certain literary works beyond the constitutive requirements of a nation. In an interdisciplinary dialogue with image theories and with studies of the body and disability, these pages raise a claim for the political and ethical nature of any exercise in literary criticism.

As穩, last distintas contribuciones se proponen explorar la siguiente pregunta central: 聶cu獺l es el alcance subversivo de la iron穩a y c籀mo debemos apreciar su dimensi籀n 矇tica, afectiva y pol穩tica en el discurso literario latinoamericano sobre la violencia? The objective is to create a novel approach between two theoretical paradigms: the field of ironology, on the one hand, and the studies of violence and memory, on the other. Thus, the different contributions intend to explore the following central question: what is the subversive scope of irony and how should we appreciate its ethical, affective and political dimension in the Latin American literary discourse on violence? The principle of diversity is what governs this compilation of essays. It includes the variety of locations and experiences of extreme violence (from the dictatorships of the Southern Cone through Central America to Mexico); the historical epochs on which the literary texts are concerned; and the various aesthetic proposals that the texts offer. Finally, diversity also concerns the different definitions handled by the authors (from Hegel to Kierkegaard, De Man, Hutcheon or Rorty) to approach the various relationships between irony and violence.
